The Establishing Shot Exclusive! Never before read Interview with Rutger Hauer about Hobo With A Shotgun

hobo with a shotgunIn an effort to get back to the high standard of content on The Establishing Shot I took some time off and I am now refocusing to ensure that you get just the triple filtered good stuff. But every time I try to get out they pull me back in, so instead here are some exclusive bits from the grindhouse trashtastic HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN.

Why are you reading this I hear you ask? Well for one thing HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN's humble beginning is the stuff of Hollywood dreams, my favourite Dutch lunatic actor Mr. Rutger Hauer is in it and the general buzz is that HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN is a lot of fun. Also HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN is being released in the UK this Friday, 15 July, 2011.

You would be forgiven for thinking that HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN is a sequel or at least a response to 2009s Trash Humpers. I know the majority of those that saw Trash Humpers was wishing that either Rutger Hauer or a HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN would storm into film and end it early.

HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN started off as a spoof grindhouse trailer for a competition held by Robert Rodriguez in 2007. The winning trailer was to be featured in the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez Grindhouse Death Proof / Planet Terror Double Bill along with spoof trailers from Eli Roth, Edgar Wright, Rob Zombie and Robert Rodriguez (whose spoof trailer MACHETE was the first film to be turned into a full length feature). Pretty soon HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN became an internet meme which lead to its inception as full length film. Congratulations to Director Jason Eisener and more power to the independents. HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN had it's UK premiere in London last Friday (my invites must have been lost in the post) and is on general release in the UK from this Friday.

HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN
When an ageing Hobo (Rutger Hauer) jumps from a freight car in a new city hoping for a fresh start in life, he soon realizes he has well and truly reached the end of the line. He finds himself trapped in an urban hell, an anarchic world overrun by murderers, rapists, paedophiles, petty crooks, prostitutes and corrupt cops. Reigning supreme over them all is the city’s crime boss, Drake (Brian Downey), and his two insanely sadistic sons, Slick (Gregory Smith) and Ivan (Nick Bateman).

All the Hobo wants is to be able to afford to buy a second-hand lawn mower from the local pawnshop, start his own small business and make the city a more beautiful place. But a run-in with Slick and Ivan while trying to rescue pretty hooker-in-distress Abby (Molly Dunsworth) changes all that. Pushed beyond his limits, he decides to arm himself and go about changing things in an entirely different way to mowing lawns.

Below is a HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN video interview with Rutger Hauer and Jason Eisener.

And here is the never before read interview with Rutger Hauer.

The reaction to Hobo With A Shotgun has been nothing short of phenomenal – and rightly so.
Rutger Hauer: I’m pleasantly shocked at how well the film’s been received, because I really didn’t see that coming. I knew that there was quite a following, but the fact that part of the [movie] establishment also came on board and were so friendly, rather than being upset and pissed off, is great. I guess the film is very clear about what it promises to tell you.

You know, not since the first test screening of The Hitcher in 1985 have I seen [one of my movies] get such a great audience reaction as Hobo’ has. It’s the only time that I’ve experienced watching a film with an audience where they know exactly what it is, and what you’re doing, and they know how to appreciate it – it was lovely.
Q: Hobo With A Shotgun doesn't seem like a project that many established actors would voluntarily sign on to. How did you get involved with it, and what attracted you to the project?
Rutger Hauer: I’d say that about one third of my work involves projects I think I should gamble with, and the more I do them, the more pleasure I get out of them, because you discover things. The script [for Hobo With A Shotgun] was a bit loud and flat, so I wasn't sure if there was more to tell, or if maybe I hadn’t read it correctly. But once I connected with the director [Jason Eisener] on Skype for an hour – I was shooting a film in Cape Town [South Africa] and he was in Halifax [USA] – I knew I had to work with him because it would be fun. Going into it, I felt like I was making a dirty, naughty film, with no holding back: I understood what the game was and I enjoyed it.

The first thing in our discussion was that we needed to try and layer the characters so we could add more depth to them.
Q. So you did have input into the Hobo character and the script?
Rutger Hauer: Yeah. Jason [Eisener] had very specific ideas about the character, because the whole story was based on Dave Brunt, who is a real person walking around in Halifax with his own story – he was the inspiration. Jason wanted me to hang on to that, so my task was to see if I could bring the real character into my movie character. So I studied Dave. He was there [on set] most of the time, and he was very supportive of me playing him. He was very proud that I was pretending to be him.
Q: What is Dave Brunt’s story?
Rutger Hauer: He’s a damaged person basically, because he was disabled when a truck drove into him. He settled for a couple of thousand dollars or something, but a big part of his life was ruined. So he became somewhat of an outcast I would think; but he’s also a very pure character who loves nature and knows all about any wild animal you can think of.

Q: The movie is extremely violent, but also totally over-the-top ridiculous. Did you have trouble playing it ‘straight’?
Rutger Hauer: Jason felt that I shouldn’t play it for jokes; that I should be deadly serious and try and deal with the simplicity of his [the Hobo’s] own mind, his sense of pride and honour and purpose. My task was to be deadly serious, because Dave [Brunt] is also very serious about this stuff: you can’t fool around with honour and pride, and sensibility.

Q: Because things get so crazy, did you find it hard keeping a straight face during the really insane scenes?
Rutger Hauer: Every scene became such an over-the-top soap opera that it was a pure joy to see how everything developed into such ridiculous, crazy stuff – but of course it was my job to stay in character. Naturally though, after Jason said ‘cut’ you would piss yourself, because of all that had happened during the scene. It’s hard, sure, but I had a lot of fun shooting this movie because it was so wild, so creative, and everyone involved has a love for making movies.

Q: You’ve played some very extreme characters during your career. But were there ever moments while filming particularly insane scenes in Hobo’ when you actually questioned if it was too crazy even for you?
Rutger Hauer: Not really. I just thought that I had to pick my own moments of craziness, so it doesn’t repeat itself, so that it becomes part of the acceleration of shit, so to speak. In a story, you can only burn and kill so many people before it gets boring – you have to be creative. I think that’s what the audience was expecting also. We had to make a movie out of the original trailer and top it, because the expectations were so very high.

Trailer: The Man from Nowhere

The Man from NowhereI'm not prone to putting up trailers or clips that 3,333 other bloggers will be bombarding the internet with - but Jeong-beom Lee's The Man from Nowhere looks the business.

The Man from Nowhere Trailer

Let's go through my patent, "this film looks awesome 10 point check list":

1. Cool title? The Man from Nowhere - Check.
2. Conflicted hero? A quiet pawnshop keeper with a violent past - Check.
3. Reluctant protagonist fighting for the right reason? His only link to the world, a little girl is kidnapped - Check.
4. Heinous antagonists? The gang are drug and organ traffickers - Check
5. Serious gun and hand to hand skills on display? Check
6. Cool tag line? Nothing to lose, nothing to compromise - Check.
7. Is it hardcore? Certificate: 18 - Check.
8. Seriously kick ass edited trailer - Check (above).
9. Accompanied by a thumping soundtrack - Again, I say check above for yourself.
10. If that isn't convincing enough. To get a flavour of what I can expect from The Man from Nowhere. Using further unquestionable research I uncover what other films viewers thought The Man from Nowhere might be like:

The Man from Nowhere

I guess the only remaining question is when can we expect to see this bad boy? The Man From Nowhere to be unleashed on DVD in the UK 11th April 2011.

The Man From Nowhere
“Scarred by traumatic events resulting from his past, former special agent Tae-shik (Bin Won) lives in solitude running a pawnshop in a rundown neighbourhood. His only contact with the world is through his customers and his next-door neighbours, a young girl named So-mi (Sae-ron Kim) and her mother, an exotic club dancer and drug addict. Neglected by her mother and shunned by the kids at school, So-mi gradually forms a bond of friendship with the loner Tae-shik.

But one day, So-mi and her mother disappear. When it becomes apparent that mobsters connected to So-mi’s mother’s drug dealing have kidnapped them, Tae-shik is forced to leave his private sanctuary and to go out into the world in search of his one and only friend. In a bid to ensure So-mi’s safety, Tae-shik agrees to perform a one-off job for the gangsters holding the girl. The job turns out to be a set-up that makes him the target of both a rival gang and of an intense police manhunt. On the run from both sides of the law, and risking him life every step of the way, Tae-shik moves ever closer to discovering So-mi’s whereabouts, but in doing so, he also risks revealing the hidden secrets of his past…”

The Establishing Shot: MACHETE Review

MacheteThe only way to hear Machete in your inner voice when reading the word is in a loud booming Grindhouse accent like this: MACHETE !!!!!!

By now you no doubt seen the trailer for MACHETE !!!!!! or at least heard of it. MACHETE !!!!!! is a Robert Rodriguez film that started out as one of the fake trailers inserted into the Grindhouse double bill of Death Proof (Quentin Tarantino) and Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror. As you know the double bill was a homage to the Grindhouse cinema of the 70s & early 80s.

As a side note my small home town Cape Town had an authentic Grindhouse cinema - the one and only The Roxy. It’s long gone these days but way back then I would occasionally sneak off for a Saturday matinee double bill at The Roxy. I say sneak off because The Roxy was strictly out of bounds. But for the same fee as the regular Saturday kiddy club I could see two films (three if I got there early enough), load up on refreshments and still have enough pocket money left over for a couple of comics. Sure the films showing were fairly old and in bad condition but I loved it.

So I can totally understand the desire to recapture that edgy nostalgia. Pretty much the whole Tarantino/Rodriguez double bill experience and visuals could have been lifted from the projection room of The Roxy.

In all honesty I wasn’t really swept away by Grindhouse Double bill - Don’t get me wrong there were moments of pure fun and maybe it was the heightened promise of delivery from the two or maybe it was because I saw films on small screens but I thought Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror only sucked slightly less than Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof. I just couldn’t help but think that budget and talent have been used to float better films. Having said that - both films are on my playlist for a re-evaluation.

Apart from MACHETE !!!!!! the other fake trailers that were inserted into the Grindhouse double bill included; Hobo with a Shotgun (winner of Robert Rodriguez's South by Southwest Grindhouse trailers competition and currently being made into a feature film starring Rutger Hauer - See the bottom of the page for a Grindhouse poster competition), Eli Roth's Thanksgiving (Roth has said that Thanksgiving may be turned into a feature) Edgar Wright's Don't (not in anyway shape or form confirmed as going to be made into a feature, yet) and Rob Zombie's Werewolf Women of the SS (with Nicholas Cage as one of cinema’s greatest villains Fu Manchu).

The idea of MACHETE !!!!!! came to Rodriguez while he was making Desperado. He got to know Danny Trejo who had a part as a hit-man who specializes in knives. Trejo and Rodriguez are distant relations but didn’t know each other till they met on the set of Desperado. Trejo a genuine bad ass having spent most of his youth in and out of juvie for crime and drug abuse. Eventually ending up in prison. While in prison he kicked his drug habit and become California State Prison Champion in both the light and welterweight divisions. The guy is a bad ass and has a lot of screen presence, too be honest when ever I saw him I thought he’s end up as the Mexican badass/henchman in lots of films. A bit like Al Leong is the Asian bad ass/henchman. You probably don’t recognize his name but when you see his face you’ll know him. Anyway when Rodriguez met Trejo he thought he was the scariest looking guy he had ever met and should be the Mexican “Jean-Claude Van Damme or Charles Bronson”.

Trejo even had a documentary Champion made about him back in 2005.

So Rodriguez decided to build a character around Trejo and thus MACHETE !!!!!! was born. His first incarnation was as Isador MACHETE !!!!!! Cortez in Spy Kids. He’s the brother in-law of Antonio Banderas’s character and reprised the role for all 3 of the Spy kids films.
Machete
In 2007 MACHETE !!!!!! was back again in the previously mentioned fake trailer for MACHETE !!!!!! inserted into the Grindhouse double bill feature.

I should mention I was surprised how incredibly close the original 2007 trailer for MACHETE !!!!!! is to the 2010 MACHETE !!!!!! film. Bar a couple of actor changes a lot of the set ups are exactly the same.

MACHETE !!!!!!
MACHETE !!!!!! picks up somewhere in Mexico and we are immediately dropped into the action as MACHETE !!!!!! and his partner are racing their Federale (Mexican bad ass cops “like the FBI, CIA and DEA, all rolled into one mean burrito!”) car to save a kidnapped girl from a vicious gang. But things aren’t that simple as the higher ups have told them not to go in and that they’ll be killed and kicked off the force. MACHETE !!!!!! makes it clear that he’s going in to save the girl, his partner lets him know what ever happens he’s on his side. MACHETE !!!!!! is a maverick badass. Thank god he’s on our side.

They crash threw the wall of the gangs hideout and MACHETE !!!!!! sets about dispensing with the criminals, each being dispatched in an increasingly more violent and ingenious way. Until a twist means that MACHETE !!!!!! has the table turned on him and he is at the mercy of the drug lord, non other than Steven Seagal (Torrez) it’s also revealed that MACHETE !!!!!!'s commanding officer is in on the whole thing and as corrupt as the night is dark. Rather than give MACHETE !!!!!! an honorable death, the gang remove MACHETE !!!!!! ’s wife’s head and Segal makes threatening comments about his daughter.

Machete
MACHETE !!!!!! is a broken man. But anyone who has ever seen a film knows this is a big mistake bad asses always come back, so I’m still unsure why Segal didn’t kill MACHETE !!!!!! Fade out.

3 years later we are introduced to Senator John McLaughlin (Robert De Niro) and Von Jackson (Don Johnson) when they are patrolling the US-Mex border with their crew, they are on a sport illegal immigrant hunt and brutally slaughter a group attempting a border crossing. Turns out Von Jackson has his own private army that are contracted to patrol the border and he is backed by the Senator John McLaughlin, who is looking to step up politically as well as increase immigration laws. Fade out.

MacheteMacheteWe then find MACHETE !!!!!! he’s on the US side of the border, without a work permit and trying to scrape a life together as a non descript day labourer. Things aren’t going so well for him. As shown in the trailer Michael Booth (Jeff Fahey) picks him up, presents him with evidence of Senator John McLaughlin’s wrong doings, makes him an offer that involves MACHETE !!!!!! assassinating McLaughlin and ridding the world of a bad man and finally threatens him. Suprisingly rather than kicking the crap out of him MACHETE !!!!!! takes him up on the offer, but surprise, surprise is double crossed framed for shooting McLaughlin and left for dead.

Machete
But they just f#cked with the wrong Mexican. What follows is 105 minutes of badassery as MACHETE !!!!!! lays waste to everything and brings the whole corrupt system down. Or as the official synopsis says;” Double crossed and on the run MACHETE !!!!!! braves the odds with the help of Luz (Michelle Rodriguez), a saucy taco slinger, Padre (Cheech Marin) his "holy" brother, and April (Lindsay Lohan) a socialite with a penchant for guns. All while being tracked by Sartana (Jessica Alba), a sexy ICE agent with a special interest in the blade slinger.

MacheteThe Skinny
I have to say that despite the cartoonish violence and ham acting (In some cases unintentional ham acting) MACHETE !!!!!! starts out quite well and well above my expectations. It's not for everyone - even though it draws attention to very relevant social issues particularly with David Cameron’s recent announcement of tightening UK immigration laws. It’s not meant to be taken seriously - it’s a very violent fun cartoon from start to finish. Performances are delivered in the spirit it is meant with tongue firmly in cheek. Around the ¾ mark I did start flagging as I the film was becoming a little repetitive. It’s a fun homage to B-Grade films of the 80s and closer to the mark than The Expendables. In fact I’m nominating Danny Trejo for the lead villain role in the sequel to The Expendables - The Expendables 2: Even more expendable now because Danny Trejo is the villain.

Outstanding
There is a scene set in a hospital where MACHETE !!!!!! has a stand off against a crew, the build up isn’t great and the slo-mo bit lifted from The Terminator 2 but MACHETE !!!!!! has hastily put together a bunch of deadly edged weapons from kit on a surgeons table. He then proceeds to rip the crew apart (literally) removing the intestine from one of them and using it to escape by swinging through the window to the floor below. They don’t teach that shizz in the academy, that’s for sure.

Fear not citizens At the end of MACHETE !!!!!! a message promises that MACHETE !!!!!! will be back in Machete Kills & Machete kills again

The MACHETE !!!!!! are also running a competition on the official UK & Ireland Facebook page for the MACHETE !!!!!! - http://www.facebook.com/macheteUKIRE - ‘Go Grindhouse’ asks fans of the page to create a ‘Grindhouse’ style movie poster for a film of their choice. They can then upload it to the page for a chance to win a Playstation 3.

The Establishing Shot: See - Mortal Kombat Short

The 7 min short below was made by director Kevin Tancharoen as a way to sell his vision to Warner Bros for their expected Mortal Kombat rebirth to be released in 2013.

It features characters from the Mortal Kombat universe with decent production values. It's rumoured that the film is in production hell whilst legal issues are sorted out. Albeit a big nod to The Watchmen - if this is the quality that is to be expected count me in for the Kumite.

It stars Ian Anthony Dale as Scorpion, Michael Jai-White as Jax (Jackson Briggs) and Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade

BROTHERS TO THE END—GEARS OF WAR 3 COMING APRIL 2011

Jacinto, the last human city, has been destroyed. The Locust Horde has pushed the Stranded remnants of humanity towards the brink of extinction. And a fearsome new enemy has risen, threatening to destroy them both. The story of Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad comes to an explosive conclusion in Gears of War 3, arriving exclusively on Xbox 360 in April 2011. At the same time they released a teaser trailer "Ashes to Ashes (http://gearsofwar.xbox.com/media/Default.htm)", as with their previous efforts it's a mixture of hard core violence, the melancholy of the Cogs and insurmountable odds.

After a little digging around I found this rather interesting variation of the teaser, the difference being that the visuals are set to Johnny Cash's brilliant "Hurt". Check it out below.

BOOM! The Expendables Trailer is here

With a cast list (Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts , Randy Couture, Steve Austin, David Zayas, Terry Crews, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Brittany Murphy, Danny Trejo, Charisma Carpenter, etc.) that reads like a "Forbes Top Heavy Hitters" list Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables is quite possibly the BIGGEST film to ever come out of Hollywood.

Hopefully between the trailer below:

And the synopsis:

THE EXPENDABLES is a hard-hitting action/thriller about a group of mercenaries hired to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator. Once the mission begins, the men realize things arent quite as they appear, finding themselves caught in a dangerous web of deceit and betrayal. With their mission thwarted and an innocent life in danger, the men struggle with an even tougher challenge one that threatens to destroy this band of brothers.

Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) is a man with nothing to lose. Fearless and void of emotion, he is the leader, the sage and the strategist of this tight-knit band of men who live on the fringe. His only attachment is to his pickup truck, his seaplane and his team of loyal modern-day warriors. His is a true cynic who describes what he does as removing those hard to get at stains. The team behind him is made up of Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), former SAS and a savant with anything that has a blade; Yin Yang (Jet Li), a master at close-quarter combat; Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), who has known Barney for ten years and is a long-barrel weapons specialist; Toll Road (Randy Couture), a skilled demolitions expert and considered the intellect of the group; and Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), a combat veteran and an expert in precision sniping who struggles with his own demons.

When the mysterious Church offers Barney a job no one else would take, Barney and his team embark on what appears to be a routine mission: overthrow General Gaza (David Zayas), the murderous dictator of the small island country of Vilena and end the years of death and destruction inflicted on its people. On a reconnaissance mission to Vilena, Barney and Christmas meet their contact Sandra (Giselle Itie), a local freedom-fighter with a dark secret. They also come to learn who their true enemy is: rogue ex-CIA operative James Monroe (Eric Roberts) and his henchman Paine (Steve Austin). When things go terribly wrong, Barney and Christmas are forced to leave Sandra behind, essentially giving her a death sentence. Haunted by this failure, Barney convinces the team to return to Vilena to rescue the hostage and finish the job he started. And to perhaps save a soul: his own.

Stallone has left some suprises to lift The Expendables from being a big film, with lots of action actors following a formulaic plot to a good film.

Survival of the Dead is the 6th film in the "Dead" series that includes; Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead.

Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day Screenplay

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is the much-anticipated sequel to the indie cult classic, The Boondock Saints.

The film is the continuation of writer/director Troy Duffy’s tough, stylized cutting edge saga of the MacManus brothers (Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery). The two have been in deep hiding with their father, Il Duce (Billy Connolly), in the quiet valleys of Ireland, far removed from their former vigilante lives. When word comes that a beloved priest has been killed by sinister forces from deep within the mob, the brothers return to Boston to mount a violent and bloody crusade to bring justice to those responsible. With a new partner in crime (Clifton Collins Jr., Star Trek) and a sexy FBI operative (Julie Benz, TV's “Dexter”) hot on their trail…the Saints are back!

Troy Duffy is something of a hero to me, hugely inspirational he wrote Boondock Saints while working as a doorman at a bar in LA. And it's only through his sheer balls out perseverance overcoming an insurmountable number of obstacles that Boondock Saints the film got made. Look he's no Saint himself but as far as tenacity goes the guy deserves a medal of sorts.

The inspiration for the screenplay happened one day when he came home from his job to find a dead woman being wheeled out of a drug dealer's apartment across the hall. Duffy then rented a computer and wrote the screenplay for The Boondock Saints based on his disgust at what he saw.
“I decided right there that out of sheer frustration and not being able to afford a psychologist, I was going to write this, think about it. People watching the news sometimes get so disgusted by what they see. Susan Smith drowning her kids... guys going into McDonald's, lighting up the whole place. You hear things that disgust you so much that even if you're Mother Teresa, there comes a breaking point. One day you're gonna watch the news and you're gonna say, 'Whoever did that despicable thing should pay with their life. You think — for maybe just a minute — that whoever did that should die, without any fuckin' jury. I was going to give everybody that sick fantasy. And tell it as truthfully as I could."
Duffy's rise and subsequent decline is painfully documented in the gonzo documentary "Overnight".

The Boondock Saints was a relatively small film that didn't follow the traditional crime formula that with some clever camera work, great editing and top notch cast made it a real pleasure to watch. I'm happy to see Duffy overcome the odds again and pull Boondock Saints 2 out the bag. Over in the states the original Boondock Saints is getting a special one night only 10th Anniversary screening on March 11th to accompany the release of The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day on DVD.

It looks like All Saints Day has had limited screenings and will be released straight to DVD/Blu Ray, currently it doesn't have a release date for the UK. I'm sure it will make it's way over here. In the meantime you can find the the screenplay further below for your reading pleasure.

Boondock Saints 2 All Saints Day Screenplay

The Saints are coming - Trailer for Troy Duffy's Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is an upcoming sequel to the 1999 cult film The Boondock Saints. The director of the original film, Troy Duffy, returned to film the sequel, which sees the return of Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus as American brothers who act as vigilantes.

Apparently Maverick Film Troy Duffy has been keeping a video production diary over here!
