Conan the barbarianIf you read my blog you know that I have said that if you are going to go see Conan The Barbarian don’t expect Inception and you’ll enjoy it more. This got me thinking about the similarities between Inception and Conan The Barbarian. So here are 14 reasons Conan The Barbarian is exactly like Inception.

Conan the barbarian

1. Both Inception and Conan The Barbarian feature a lead character that is a professional thief with a particular set of skills

Inception
Inception has Dominic Cobb who has very specific set of skills that he uses in corporate espionage as an extractor breaking into people’s heads and stealing their secrets. In one scene Cobb and his team have to storm a fortress and break into a vault to retrieve an item.

Conan The Barbarian
Conan also has a very specific set of skills that he uses in Living, Loving, Slaying and generally being content that he employs to break people's heads and steal their belongings. In one scene Conan and his team have to storm a fortress and break into a vault to retrieve an item.

2. They both have lead actors who have a TV background

Inception
Sure Leonardo DiCaprio may be King of the world now but he started off in TV with roles on shows that include: The Outsiders, The New Lassie, Santa Barbara, Roseanne, Growing Pains

Conan The Barbarian
Jason Momoa is on the cusp of breaking into Hollywood but he honed his skills on TV shows like: Baywatch, North Shore, Stargate: Atlantis, The Game, Game of Thrones

3. They both have an actor named Leo playing the lead character.

Inception
In Inception Leo Di Caprio plays lead character Dominic Cobb

Conan The Barbarian
Whilst Leo Howard plays a young Conan in Conan The Barbarian

4. Both are made by Directors that have carved out a niche filmmaking style for themselves.

Inception
Christopher Nolan has surpassed good and is heading to greatness with his mix of visually engaging realism, drawing great performances from his cast combined with classic film making techniques as demonstrated in: Inception, Batman Begins, Insomnia, Memento

Conan The Barbarian
Marcus Nispel has found a following for his particular fast paced and edgy visuals that take precedence over plot. With the likes of: Conan the Barbarian, Friday the 13th, Pathfinder, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

5. Both Inception and Conan The Barbarian feature a hero that has suffered a great personal loss and is on a quest/one last job to make things right and get home.

Inception
Inception’s Dominic Cobb is implicated in the death of his wife and is on the run, he takes one last job that may return him to his remaining family.

Conan The Barbarian
Conan’s village is brutally attacked by warlord Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang) and his vicious hordes. Zym kills Conan’s father and most of the village and he sets out on a quest for revenge.

6. Both Inception and Conan The Barbarian must had a script and story that confused the cast

Inception
Christopher Nolan is notoriously secretive when it comes to his storylines. Often feeding the cast a script piece by piece. Most of the Inception cast are still as confused as us about the exact roll out of the story and the exact specifics of the ending.

Conan The Barbarian
On reading the entire script for Conan The Barbarian I’m pretty sure most the cast must have been just as confused as us about the exact rollout of the Conan The Barbarian storyline and wondered if they were actually being fed the plot in a piece meal fashion.

7. Both feature a respected mature actor in a minor role that gives the film heavyweight credibility

Inception
Inception has Chris Nolan’s lucky charm Michael Caine as Dominic Cobb’s father in-law and mentor.

Conan The Barbarian
Conan The Barbarian has Morgan Freeman as the narrator.

8. Both feature a female character that has almost supernatural powers that has it in for the lead character

Inception
Inception has Mal (Marion Cotillard) Cobb’s deceased wife who invades his mind and using dream powers tries to destroy Cobb

Conan The Barbarian
Conan has Marique played by Rose McGowan who is actually really good in the role. Marique is the daughter of Warlord/Sorceror Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang) and a powerful sorceress. And boy does she have it in for Conan.

9. Both Inception and Conan The Barbarian feature strong themes of family

Inception
Dominic Cobb is driven by the desire to be reunited with his family. Whilst protagonist Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy) actions are driven by seeking the acceptance from his father.

Conan The Barbarian
Conan’s father was killed and he is driven to slash, hack and bash by a deep seated desire to avenge his death. Whilst protagonist Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang) actions are motivated by the possibility of being reunited with his deceased wife.

10. Both Inception and Conan The Barbarian had films covering similar source material in the 80s

Inception
Inception had Dreamscape made in 1984 which was about “A government funded project looks into using psychics to enter people's dreams, with some mechanical help. When a subject dies in his sleep from a heart attack Alex Gardner becomes suspicious that another of the psychics is killing people in the dreams somehow and that is causing them to die in real life. He must find a way to stop the abuse of the power to enter dreams.” From IMDB by Zaphod

Conan the Barbarian
Conan has Conan the Barbarian made in 1982 which is The epic tale of child sold into slavery who grows into a man who seeks revenge against the warlord who massacred his tribe.” From IMDB

11. Both Inception and Conan The Barbarian have a side kick character that remains staunchly loyal to the lead character

Inception
Inception’s Dominic Cobb has Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) the Point man who always has Cobb’s back and looks after the MV-235A Portable Automated Somnacin IntraVenous (PASIV) the dream stealing device that is used to travel into dreams.

Conan the Barbarian
Conan has Artus played by Ian Charleson Award winner Nonso Anozie
the Pirate who always has Conan’s back and looks after the Hornet, a galleon that is used to travel around the world.

12. Both Inception and Conan The Barbarian feature a female character that unknowingly play a larger role in the film.

Inception
Inception has Ariadne played by the delightful Ellen Page, she is The Architect who manufactures the dreams that the team use in their schemes. She also crucially helps Cobb and the team in the climax.

Conan The Barbarian
Conan The Barbarian has Tamara (Rachel Nichols) a maiden that is sought after by Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang) as her sacrificial blood is needed for him to attain the power he desires. As with Ariadne she helps Conan.

13. Both Inception and Conan The Barbarian feature an impossibly gorgeous female character in a relatively minor role that should have been given more screen time that will stay with you after the film has ended.

Inception
Inception has Talulah Riley as Blonde. The character that Tom Hardy inhabits in a dream.

Conan The Barbarian
Conan The Barbarian has Alina Puscau (Slavegirl #1)

Conan The Barbarian
Conan The Barbarian has The Tower of the Elephant a short Robert E Howard story - that many fans believe is one of his best Conan tale.
