I was a little confused about the relevance of the whole pop up aspect of this campaign until I saw the promo videos for Paddington 2 and all became clear.

The much-anticipated sequel to the worldwide hit family film finds Paddington happily settled with the Brown family in Windsor Gardens, where he has become a popular member of the community, spreading joy and marmalade wherever he goes. While searching for the perfect present for his beloved Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday, Paddington spots a unique pop-up book in Mr. Gruber’s antique shop, and embarks upon a series of odd jobs to buy it. But when the book is stolen, it’s up to Paddington and the Browns to unmask the thief…

In PADDINGTON 2, Paddington discovers an exceptional pop-up book in Mr Gruber’s antique store. Taking inspiration from this, various breath-taking interactive installations will spring up in locations across the city, featuring London’s famous landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, Westminster, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square.

And of course any Paddington related expedition would not be complete without a visit to Marcus Cornish's “original” Paddington sculpture which was recently relocated to a prime spot within Paddington Station - shortly after the release of Paul King's Paddington film. At the same time the sculpture receives an official blue plaque commemorating Paddington Bear’s unique ties with the station that gave him his name and saw him welcomed to London by the kind Brown family in Michael Bond’s 1958 book A Bear Called Paddington. It also credits Paddington Station as a pivotal location for the filming of Paddington.

After almost 15 years in its previous location, the bronze Paddington Bear statue has now been moved to take pride of place under the station clock, with the new plaque installed on the wall to the left of the clock arch, marking the spot in the film where Paddington first meets Mr and Mrs Brown on Platform 1.

Paddington’s origins date back almost sixty years to when his creator, Michael Bond, bought a small bear from Selfridges on Christmas Eve 1956, as a present for his wife, and named him after the nearest railway station to which they lived.

In the spirit of the Mayor’s #LondonIsOpen campaign, Paddington’s Pop-Up London will encourage people to appreciate our beautiful capital city spreading the message that a warm welcome awaits everyone – even a little bear.
