Matthew McConaughey introduces his latest outstanding film GOLDLast Friday I was fortunate to crack an invite to what was the hottest ticket of the week  -  an early screening of Stephen Gaghan's outstanding Gold starring Matthew McConaughey, Bryce Dallas Howard and Edgar Ramirez, held at the gorgeous Ham Yard Hotel.

     Look any reason to visit the Ham Yard Hotel is good (if you get the chance pop into the magnificent Dive Bar, the film themed Bollywood Spill Out Area and the Croc Bowling Alley) but this was a particularly good occasion as none other than Matthew McConaughey himself popped in to introduce his latest film Gold to the jam packed screening.

     Sadly I didn't get a chance to see Captain Fantastic but any film that stars Viggo Mortensen is going to be a quality effort, more so, when the material is as fiercely original as Captain Fantastic promises, and leans so much towards themes of humanity, a strength running through all Mortensen's role choices.

     At its Cannes Festival debut Captain Fantastic got a 10 minute standing ovation and everyone I know that has seen it loves it.. So I thinks it's fair to assume that Captain Fantastic is going to be a worthwhile viewing experience.

     As well as Viggo Mortensen, no doubt George MacKay will be putting in another fine performance to add to his growing resume alongside the legendary Frank Langella.

Indy Slacker Lost in Translation Wah Do Dem gets a UK release date

Network releasing is bringing the charming slacker oddessy Wah Do Dem (Patois for “What’s Wrong With Them”) to the UK. I have seen Wah Do Dem and this fresh indy is the flipside of the coin of Lost in Translation and it will charm you as it takes you across Jamaica.

In WAH DO DEM, young Brooklyn-based musician Max (Sean Bones) wins tickets to go on a Caribbean cruise. At the last minute, he is dumped by his girlfriend (Norah Jones). He goes on the cruise alone anyway. Once in Jamaica, Max quickly escapes the tourist zones for more “authentic” surroundings and in the process, he falls victim to a robbery and loses all his possessions including his passport and is stranded- and literally misses the boat. As Max sets out for the American Embassy in Kingston on foot, Jamaica is waiting to greet him with unexpected and extraordinary encounters and adventures, including a full-moon celebration with the legendary reggae group The Congos, and a dreamy stay with a Rasta prophet- an inspired and eerie performance from Carl Bradshaw (The Harder They Come).

The Establishing Shot: The brilliant Lymelife is coming to DVD!

Infidelity, family feuds and first love combine in the Network Releasing DVD debut of LYMELIFE, available to rent and own on 23rd August 2010.


I was fortunate enough to catch a preview screening of Lymelife. I say fortunate as this bitter sweet film is wonderful. A warm slice of 70s American life. Told from the point of view of Scott Bartlett (Rory Culkin) a "shy Star Wars loving teenager obsessed with feisty girl next-door Adrianna (Emma Roberts)". It really captures the nostalgia of the 70s, coming of age, family life, the consequences of adult decisions and their impact.

All round the acting is superb and impressively under stated but the real star of Lymelife is the world that Writer/Director Derick Martini creates it will sweep you away and keep you engaged. There are some hear warming moments that will make you smile while easing you into the tension building to it's conclusion. A great little film with powerhouse performances.


Executive produced by Martin Scorsese and directed by Derick Martini, this semi-autobiographical tale about the American Dream gone wrong is set in the late 1970s in Long Island, New York. Scott Bartlett (Rory Culkin) is a shy Star Wars loving teenager obsessed with feisty girl next-door Adrianna (Emma Roberts). Adrianna’s deer-hunting father loses his job after contracting Lyme’s disease from a tic, a brain wasting illness. He hides losing his job from wife Melissa (Cynthia Nixon) by getting stoned in the basement while she embarks on an affair with her real estate boss played by Alec Baldwin, who happens to be Scott’s father and her daughter’s friend. Tension mounts when things become all too obvious to Scott’s mother, played by Jill Hennessy, which coincides with Scott’s journey to manhood…

An excellent ensemble cast make this a powerful drama with many darkly comic moments. It will appeal to fans of quirky independent films such as American Beauty and The Ice Storm.

Scorsese & Baldwin's Lymelife gets a UK releaseI haven't seen Martin Scorsese and Alec Baldwin's Lymelife as yet. I am however very aware of it and have been awaiting for it since the 2009 Sundance Festival.

It's has high powered backing, it's from the Sundance stable (the script developed in a Raindance Lab), solid reviews, a top notch cast and great performances, however one of the main reason's I am keen on seeing it - is Alec Baldwin. I'm by no means a huge fan of his work but in the 1999 "Outside Providence" I thought his understated performance as flawed blue collar Old Man Dunphy was pure brilliance and the highlight of the film. In fact off the cuff I can't think of a role of his his that I've enjoyed more. Last year when I saw the trailer for Lymelife immediately thought Baldwin's going to shine again. Lymelife is the semi-autobiographical tale of the American dream gone wrong, it's quirky with a cracking script plus excellent performances from a stellar cast. Lymelife was also produced by Alec Baldwin.

Produced by Derick and Steven Martini and directed by Derick Martini, the film is set in the late 1970s in Long Island, New York, chronicling the disintegration of two families (The Bartletts and Braggs) when tangled relationships, real estate problems and an outbreak of Lyme’s disease hit a small suburban community.

Told from the perspective of Scott Bartlett (Kieran Culkin) a timid boy radically different from his philandering father played by Alec Baldwin, matters really heat up when Jimmy (Rory Culkin) returns home on leave from the army and Scott Bartlett’s affair with Melissa Bragg (Cynthia Nixon) becomes all too obvious to Baldwin’s long suffering wife played by Jill Hennessy. Tension mounts as Scott harbours secret feelings for Melissa’s daughter Adrianna (played by Emma Roberts).

Michael owes money to Dublin's meanest gangster, Darren Perrier. When the debt is called in Brenda, Michael's recently "dumped" and suicidal best friend, accidentally shoots dead one of his goons. To make matters worse Michael's estranged father, Jim, arrives just in time to witness the scene. With a bounty on their heads Michael, Jim and Brenda flee to the mountains.



On the run with his eccentric father, who's convinced he'll die the next time he sleeps, and an increasingly morose Brenda, Michael is about to lose his mind. But as the net tightens and the helter-skelter chase reaches its climax he is forced to forgive his father and confront his true feelings for Brenda. With every hard man in Dublin on their trail it looks like Michael won't make it through the next 24 hours; however, The Grim Reaper and a gang of savage dogs have a funny way of intervening.


Jim Broadbent stars alongside Cillian Murphy and Jodie Whittaker as three unlikely fugitives on the run from gangster supremo, Perrier, played by Brendan Gleeson, in this fast paced comedy-thriller set in Dublin. With only 24 hours to escape certain death, the trio must beat the clock, stay awake, and above all, pay Perrier’s bounty.
