This Week on The Establishing Shot:
Last week we were relatively busy and what little free time I had was utilised crushing Noobs as we finally got around to playing some Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4. Outstanding!

Cinematically speaking the highlight of the week must have been seeing Afterschool. A sharp gem of a film from Director Antonio Campos that features another incredible performance from We Need to Talk about Kevin’s Ezra Miller. In many respects the similarities in the films are astounding with Afterschool foretelling  the kind of material that Ezra Miller is drawn to and excels.

Hopefully a full review will be up soon in the meantime there is a little more about Afterschool further below.

The Establishing Shot: Nicolas Winding Refn UK Pusher gets a poster
One of 2012s most anticipated films over here at The Establishing Shot is the UK reimagining of Nicolas Winding Refn's Pusher. We loved Nicolas Winding Refn's gritty slice of life Danish trilogy focussed on the under world of drug dealing desperado Frank. It also introduced us to some outstanding talent like Mads Mikkelsen, the always compelling Zlatko Buric as well as the man himself Nicolas Winding Refn. And with Nicolas Winding Refn on board as Executive Producer collaborating again with the guys behind Bronson and Monsters - Pusher is shaping up to be a film of note.

The Establishing Shot: We analyse the First official James Bond still from Skyfall Walther P99 returns and are Que Optic International a threat?
As promised Sony released the first official still from the 23rd James Bond cinematic adventure Skyfall online at www.007.com this morning. Let's take a look at it.

In the picture we see James Bond in a neon lit room. Bond seems to be unshaven and warmly dressed. His outfit seemingly adapted for stealth activities, despite his black gloves a closer look shows a white high collar shirt under his upturned lapel - so either Bond has been thrown in to this mission - continuing the theme from Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace or this Bond doesn't need over engineered gadget solutions or stealth suits. The stubble on his face tells us a similar story albeit hinting at a harder colder Bond. He seems to be in the midst of the action as his brow is beaded with sweat.

The Establishing Shot: Winners of the Richard Attenborough UK Regional Film Awards RAFAs announced
British Actors And Filmmakers Dominate The Richard Attenborough Film Awards 2012. Three awards for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, two critics’ prizes for The Artist. The winners of the sixth annual Richard Attenborough UK Regional Film Awards (RAFAs) were announced today, adding further accolades to both The Artist and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. RAFAs also go to Michael Fassbender, Tom Hiddleston and Aardman Animations as British film’s golden year of 2011 is reflected fulsomely in the list of winners.

Even though The Establishing Shot were nominated in the Film Blog of the year category. I unfortunately couldn't make the RAFAks swanky do in central London - but did watch it live online. We didn't t win but a hearty congratulations to CineVue. Visit www.cine-vue.com it is a worthwhile read and it is great to see a broader spectrum of film blogs recognised not just the usual media darlings. More power to ya CineVue.

CHRONICLE
Three high school students make an incredible discovery, leading to their developing uncanny powers beyond their understanding. As they learn to control their abilities and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides begin to take over.

JACK AND JILL
Jack and Jill is a comedy focusing on Jack Sadelstein (Adam Sandler), a successful advertising executive in Los Angeles with a beautiful wife and kids, who dreads one event each year: the Thanksgiving visit of his identical twin sister Jill (also Adam Sandler). Jill's neediness and passive-aggressiveness is maddening to Jack, turning his normally tranquil life upside down. Katie Holmes plays Erin, Jack's wife.

MAN ON A LEDGE
An ex-cop and now wanted fugitive (Sam Worthington) stands on the ledge of a high-rise building while a NYPD negotiator (Elizabeth Banks) tries to talk him down. The longer they are on the ledge, the more she realises that he might have an ulterior objective.

MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE
Elizabeth Olsen stars in director Sean Durkin's psychological thriller, MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, about a young woman who undergoes an explosive crisis of identity after escaping the confines of a rural cult-like farming community. Trapped by unsettling flashes of memories from the past and visions of a perilous future, she becomes taken over by an unsettling sense of fear, leaving her consumed by paranoia and a mysterious burden of guilt.

YOUNG ADULT
Academy Award winner Charlize Theron plays Mavis Gary, a writer of teen literature who returns to her small hometown to relive her glory days and attempt to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart (Patrick Wilson). When returning home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate (Patton Oswalt) who hasn't quite gotten over high school, either.

JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND
The new 3D family adventure 'Journey 2: The Mysterious Island' begins when seventeen-year-old Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist. Unable to stop him from tracking the signal to its source, Sean's new stepfather, Hank (Dwayne Johnson), joins the quest that will take them first to the South Pacific, and then to a place few people have ever seen. Or lived to tell about. It's a place of stunning beauty, strange and threatening life forms, volcanoes, mountains of gold and more than one astonishing secret.

CARNAGE
Carnage tells the story of two sets of parents who decide to have a cordial meeting after their sons are involved in a schoolyard brawl.

BOMBAY BEACH
The rusting relic of a failed 1950s development boom, the Salton Sea is a barren Californian landscape often seen as a symbol of the failure of the American Dream. A sea in the middle of the Colorado desert. First-time director Alma Har'el visits this poetically fruitful terrain in her distinctive documentary Bombay Beach, and finds there a motley cast including a bipolar seven-year-old, a lovelorn high school football star, and an octogenarian poet-prophet. Together they make up a triptych of American manhood in its decisive moments, populating the Salton Sea's land of thwarted opportunity.

The Establishing Shot: In the mail - Afterschool
See Ezra Miller in his shocking and startling debut as a teenage monster! Pornography, drug addiction and murder...It’s just an average day for pupils an elite American school in the movie about the YouTube generation.

Robert (Ezra Miller – We Need to Talk About Kevin) - is a young, ill-at-ease American student at a private East Coast preparatory school who has a disturbing penchant for random Youtube clips and online pornography. He is also very much a loner and finds friendly interactions with other students his own age difficult. Robert accidentally captures on camera the agonising death of two attractive and popular female classmates. The principle of the school decides that their lives are to become memorialised as part of an audio-visual assignment designed to speed up the campus-wide healing process – a project that is assigned to Robert. But the video memorial assignment creates an atmosphere of paranoia and unease among students and teachers with unforeseen consequences. Apart from the brilliant performance of Ezra Miller, AFTERSCHOOL also features Rosemary DeWitt (Rachel Getting Married) and Michael Stuhlbarg, who stars in the Coen brothers’ A Serious Man and HBO drama Boardwalk Empire.

The motivation and the inspiration of AFTERSCHOOL, according to the director Antonio Campos, was born out of his own history as a student at an elite New York preparatory school, the alumni of which includes Truman Capote; the death of two close friends and the harrowing event of 9/11, when he was himself only 18 years of age.

The Woman In Black Opens At No.2 At The US Boxoffice
Hammer's chilling ghost story The Woman in Black exceeded box office expectations to open in the no.2 spot in its three day opening weekend (Fri-Sun) in the US, grossing just over $21m.

This is more than Paranormal Activity's opening weekend which grossed $19,617,650 in 2009 and The Grudge 2 which grossed $20,825,300 in 2006.

Hammer's adaptation of Susan Hill's classic novel, starring Daniel Radcliffe, opened on almost 2855 screens with a per screen average of $7,356.

This weekend's three day gross makes The Woman in Black the highest opening ever for a Hammer film in the US.

The Woman in Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe, is the iconic production company's first ever feature ghost story. It is directed by James Watkins and adapted by Jane Goldman from the book by Susan Hill.

The film is a Hammer, Alliance Films, The UK Film Council presentation, in association with Cross Creek Pictures. A Talisman production in association with Exclusive Media. Producers are Richard Jackson, Simon Oakes and Brian Oliver. Executive Producers are Guy East, Nigel Sinclair, Tobin Armbrust, Marc Schipper, Neil Dunn, Xavier Marchand, Roy Lee and Tyler Thompson.

Commenting on the success of The Woman in Black, Simon Oakes, President & CEO of Hammer and Vice Chairman of Exclusive Media said: "We are delighted that The Woman in Black has performed so well. The fact that a gothic horror has attracted such a large audience on opening weekend shows the demand for elevated and intelligent genre films which Hammer aims to produce."

Nigel Sinclair, CEO of Exclusive Media added: "This follows on a strong performance for Ides of March and reflects our commitment to great artists and great movies; I congratulate our partners CBS Alliance and of course Cross Creek pictures."

Tobin Armbrust, President of Worldwide Production & Acquisitions of Exclusive Media, which is Hammer's parent company, added: "We are thrilled to share in the success of The Woman in Black with our close family, Daniel Radcliffe, Jane Goldman, James Watkins and the entire cast and crew who all worked incredibly hard on this great project. Hammer is one of our key production brands and to see it embraced in the US is a great show of support for its production philosophy."

The Woman in Black director James Watkins said: 'I'm thrilled that a British ghost story, made with a British cast, crew and investment, is playing so well with American audiences.'

The Woman in Black will open in the UK on 10 February.

Man on a Ledge ...or is he??
To celebrate the UK release of Man on a Ledge, artist Joe Hill of 3D Joe and Max stands perilously close to the edge of side of a 200m metre high building in the centre of City of London yesterday - the most extreme work ever undertaken by these award winning, global artists.

To mark its nationwide cinema release today, the artists defied freezing winds and hair-raising heights to capture the shear intensity and adrenalin of the film

Man On A Ledge

Starring Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, Ed Harris, Anthony Mackie and Genesis Rodriguez, this adrenalin fuelled action thriller is ‘high’ concept where nothing is quite what it seems and who you can trust is a careful balancing act.

Jays teams up with Samsung
Jays has signed an agreement with Samsung, the world's largest manufacturer of smartphones. The deal sees Jays and Samsung team up for a number of joint promotional activities during February 2012.

The Swedish headphone manufacturer has long had a strong presence in Asia and the new partnership with Samsung will give Jays a further boost. Samsung is the world's largest manufacturer of smartphones by volume, with a 24% market share and 28 million phones sold in Q3 2011 alone. The cooperation will see Jays’ award-winning v-JAYS being marketed together with selected products across Samsung´s 691 stores and with its other retailers in Korea during February.

“The agreement with Samsung is a great boost for our profile in a key target market. It’s also an incredible endorsement of Jays’ unrivalled quality and our continued success. Coming from the world's largest manufacturer of smartphones it’s a great compliment,” comments Rune Torbjörnsen, CEO of Jays AB (publ). “Our Mobile Music concept has proven to be a very popular initiative and the response has been staggering. BFI's 2011 UK box office report
Annual UK cinema admissions increased by 1.4% to 171.6 million, the third highest total of the last decade. The gross value of those ticket sales was £1,040 million, up 5% on 2010. The strong performance of a number of independent British films such as The King’s Speech and The Inbetweeners Movie was a major factor behind the growth in box office revenue.

The success of The King’s Speech and other awards season contenders like Black Swan contributed to an increase in admissions at the beginning of the year and half-term family films Tangled and Gnomeo and Juliet helped to raise February admissions by almost 16%. While ticket sales in March and April were down on 2010, a stronger slate of June releases meant that admissions increased by 45% on 2010, when cinema-going had been adversely affected by the FIFA World Cup. The Inbetweeners Movie and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy boosted September admissions, which were up 14% compared with 2010 and the year finished with a 12% improvement in sales compared with snow-blighted December 2010.

Second and third place belonged to two independent British films, The King’s Speech and The Inbetweeners Movie, each earning over £45 million to become the two highest grossing independent UK films since box office records began. The greatest Short film competition ever - Sci-Fi-London 48 Hour Film Challenge
Over the last four years the SCI-FI-LONDON Film Festival has run a 48hour Film Challenge and we have had over 380 films completed, many of which have gone to other film festivals and been broadcast on TV.

The challenge takes place a few weeks before the film festival so we can judge all the entries and the winning films can be screened at the festival.

To take part is easy:
Get a crew together, scout some locations, prep your cast and be ready to make a 5 minute short film in just 48 hours.

We ask one member of your team to come to the Apollo Piccadilly on Saturday 14 April at 10.30am where we give you the TITLE of the film you will make, some DIALOGUE that one of your characters must say to screen, and a list of PROPS that must be seen in the film. This year we also introduce an optional scientific theme... this could be nano-tech, cloning, gene-splicing...or something a little more "fringe".

Once you have all your elements, you have until Monday morning to return the completed movie to us.

In 2008, Gareth Edwards took part and won the competition. Gareth’s debut feature is the multiple award-winning MONSTERS – and the project was green-lit because Vertigo Films saw his winning 48hour short-film right here! So impressed were they with what he could do with no budget in just 2 days that they decided to develop a feature with him.

In 2011 we had a prize from Vertigo Films of a feature-film development deal, we hope that the winners will complete their first feature next year. Also, one of the runners-up was scouted by The Mill and is now working on some amazing projects. We are working on prizes and jury right now, but the dates are locked, so start planning.

For 2012 we can confirm Vertigo Films are offering another development deal to the winners!

The 2012 challenge weekend is 14 - 16 April.

The Vaults Cinema presents Hammer: classics and cutting edge.
We are thrilled and slightly scared to announce that the Vaults Cinema has formed an unholy alliance with the mighty Hammer, Britain's legendary house of horror for Hammer screenings at VAULT in London

Starting on Friday, February 10th, we will be resurrecting bloody classics like The Reptile, Frankenstein Created Woman and The Vampire Lovers and bringing them face to face with their 21st century counterparts: Wake Wood, Let Me In and the eagerly awaited The Woman in Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe.

As if that wasn't enough, screenings feature surprise special guests reading from the source material …Who are they? Well, that would be telling. Vaults Cinema and Hammer are a perfect fit as Hammer has been the champion of Gothic literature for decades with their magnificent adaptations of novels such as Dracula and Frankenstein and now, resurrected and reinvigorated, they keep that tradition alive with the marvellous Let Me In and The Woman in Black.

The Establishing Shot: Music discovered this week: M.I.A - Bad Girls
I am not as taken with M.I.A.'s song Bad Girls as much as Romain Gavras' outstanding music video for Bad Girls. Always controversial we hung out with Vincent Kassel, Romain Gavras and Kourtrajmé collaborater Kim Chapiron at a special screening of Romain Gavras' Our Day Will Come, a modern Day Bonnie & Clyde. These guys are going to have a huge impact on the way films are made in the future (or end up behind bars) either way I'm looking forward to seeing more of their stuff asap.

Bad Girls is Gavras' second collaboration with M.I.A the first Born Free can be seen over here: http://www.theestablishingshot.com/2011/07/see-romain-gavras-born-free-short-film.html
