THE ESTABLISHING SHOT RECOMMENDS: IDENTITY THIEF

I kind of saw Identity Thief by mistake and was completely surprised by how engaging it is. I had categorised Identity Thief in the middle of the road American humour file, but was pleasantly surprised how the bigger story became more important than the flashes of humour strung throughout and it all comes together surprisingly well.

Identity Thief
The well ordered life of businessman Sandy Patterson (Jason Bateman) is thrown into turmoil when his credit cards are cloned  and identity is stolen by brash chancer Diana (Melissa McCarthy). His efforts to take back what is his, however, prove far  from easy as the laughs come thick and fast in this raucous knockabout comedy.

In cinemas from March 22

THE ESTABLISHING SHOT IS ANTICIPATING: NEIGHBOURING SOUNDS
Neighbouring Sounds
This stylish film from Brazil introduces the diverse folk living in an upmarket residential street, whose lives appear to be  improved by the arrival of private security guards. But all is not as it seems in this fractured community, where wary locals  protect themselves from the outside world by locking themselves into their gated apartments.

In cinemas from March 22

THE ESTABLISHING SHOT RECOMMENDS: COMPLIANCE
Compliance is currently our 5th favourite film of 2013. Compliance is not entertaining but certainly a gripping and uncomfortable piece of mature film making that raises challenging questions. Our review can be read here: http://www.theestablishingshot.com/2013/03/compliance-new-american-dream-gripping.html

Compliance
The urge to unquestioningly obey authority is taken to dark extremes in this American drama, inspired by actual events. A  prank call to an Ohio burger restaurant convinces the highly strung manager that an employee has committed a crime, setting in  motion a dramatic chain reaction that will have a profound effect on everyone concerned. Stars Dreama Walker.

Good Vibrations
The story of Belfast music impresario Terri Hooley is so incredible you feel it must be made up. THE ESTABLISHING SHOT RECOMMENDS: DRAGON
Dragon is currently our 6th favourite film of 2013. If you enjoy Martial Arts films Dragon delivers in spades as well as transcends the genre and should please more than just Asian Cinema fans. Exceptional locations beautifully shot on crisp digital, with top notch fight choreography set to a pretty decent story raising Dragon above the run of the mill eastern fight films. With decent performances and some genuinely touching on screen relationships.

If you have seen the astounding Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom, Dragon is in a similar vein but very much its own film.  Our review will be up closer to release date.

Dragon
A mild mannered villager becomes a local hero when he saves a shopkeeper from gangsters who had threatened his business. But  his momentary act of bravery lets slip the
secrets of his dangerous past, history which soon revisits him in this action packed wuxia tale from director Peter Chan, with  Donnie Yen heading the cast.

From April 5

THE ESTABLISHING SHOT RECOMMENDS: THE ODD LIFE OF TIMOTHY GREEN
The Establishing Shot recommends The Odd Life Of Timothy Green. I saw  The Odd Life Of Timothy Green on a flight earlier this year and have to say I really enjoyed it. It harks back to the classic Disney film making of the 70s with a fantastical story that is engaging as well as touching albeit a little saccharine.

The Odd Life Of Timothy Green
Happily married couple Cindy and Jim Green (Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton) would like nothing more than a child of their own. Their dream unexpectedly comes true when young Timothy Green (CJ Adams) knocks on their door one rainy  night and introduces himself to his bemused parents, in this engaging and highly original family fable.

From April 5

THE ESTABLISHING SHOT IS ANTICIPATING: HOME

From April 12

THE ESTABLISHING SHOT RECOMMENDS: THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES
The Establishing Shot recommends The Place Beyond The Pines which is currently our 3rd favourite film of 2013. Going into see The Place Beyond The Pines I had no idea what to expect and just as well because The Place Beyond The Pines is a different film from the one I may have expected. Much larger in scope than anticipated it is a rare film that is made  against the grain of conventional film sales. Deep performances across the board from a cast playing against type or playing on expectations The Place Beyond The Pines come together in a meaningful way. Sadly by the time The Place Beyond The Pines is released every possible plot point will have leaked making it a different film from the wonderful tale I saw. Avoid all media and reviews to make the most of The Place Beyond The Pines viewing experience. I will have a spoiler free review up closer to release date.

The Place Beyond The Pines

Scary Movie 5
There are several things going bump in the night, as the Paranormal Activity movies and sundry other horror tales are spoofed  in this gleeful send-up. Video: Evil Dead - Trailer Reactions

THE ESTABLISHING SHOT RECOMMENDS: EVIL DEAD
The Establishing Shot recommends Evil Dead. If you are a horror or Deadite you will probably enjoy this new version of Evil Dead if you can suspend disbelief for long enough . A bigger budget and pseudo intelligent update on the original. It has less out and out craziness that made Sam Raimi's memorable and  less intelligence than  the New French Extremity school of film making but is a worthy addition to the new genre of American horror films made by foreigners.  I will have a spoiler free review up closer to release date.

Evil Dead
A group of five friends sheltering in a remote cabin discover the Book of the Dead and so invoke all manner of demonic forces upon themselves, in this spirited remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult favourite. From May 3

THE ESTABLISHING SHOT RECOMMENDS: 21 AND OVER
The Establishing Shot recommends 21 And Over. I really enjoyed 21 And Over it is a cut above the usual coming of age/kids run wild genre films that flood the cinemas every year. It has enough politically incorrect humour to keep it edgy, nicely counter balanced with a story that twists its way into your heart while keeping you engaged, faltering slightly at the second last hurdle before finishing a winner. That been said I was laughing the loudest and longest in the screening I was a decent riff and lands between; Vamp, National Lampoon's Animal House and Scorsese's After Hours.  I will have a spoiler free review up closer to release date.

21 And Over
In this raucous comedy from (some of) the team behind The Hangover, gifted student Jeff Chang takes his life in his hands when he lets his two best friends take him out for a birthday drink the night before an important medical school interview.
