I have just finished watching Zack Snyder's 300 on a terrestrial broadcast. Man what a film! Each frame is composed like a piece of art, comic art that is, as Snyder brings the pages of the source material - Frank Miller & Lynn Varley's graphic novel 300 to life almost shot for shot. It is in my opinion one of the best big screen adaptations of comic material.

Snyder brings a depth and emotion to the single minded characters lifting them off the pages of the comic and bringing life to his cinematic universe, something that seems to elude him in some of his other works. Possibly it is a very good thing that he may be chatting with Frank Miller regarding the as yet Untitled Man of Steel Sequel featuring the much talked about Superman vs. Batman film as with this earlier work he strikes a good balance between visual spectacle and emotion.

I forgot just how great 300 is and it never fails to tear my up when I see this band of brothers in arms who have dedicated their lives to martial arts never falter in their faith, honour or trust of one another in the face of innumerable odds at the legendary Battle of Hot Gates or Thermopylae. Man those Spartans knew how to kick ass. The ending of Miller's 300 always left the door open for the next even more epic clash between the Greek and Persian armies the Battle of Plataea, that took place a year later. I have been waiting for 300: Rise of an Empire since 1998 so I guess another 216 days won't kill me.

We can expect to see Noam Murro's 300: Rise of an Empire in UK cinemas from 7 March 2014  In the meantime below I'll be updating this post with all the official news you need to know about  300: Rise of an Empire.

300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE
Based on Frank Miller’s latest graphic novel Xerxes, and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster “300,” this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield—on the sea—as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war.
“300: Rise of an Empire” pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and Artemesia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

Warner Bros. Picture presents and Legendary Pictures presents, a Cruel and Unusual Films/Mark Canton/Gianni Nunnari Production, “300: Rise of an Empire.”   The action adventure stars Sullivan Stapleton (“Gangster Squad”) as Themistokles and Eva Green (“Dark Shadows,” “Casino Royale”) as Artemesia.   Lena Headey reprises her starring role from “300” as the Spartan Queen, Gorgo; Hans Matheson (“Clash of the Titans”) stars as Aeskylos; and Rodrigo Santoro stars again as the Persian King, Xerxes.

The film is directed by Noam Murro, from a screenplay by Zack Snyder & Kurt Johnstad, based on the graphic novel Xerxes, by Frank Miller.  It is produced by Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Bernie Goldmann.  Thomas Tull, Frank Miller, Stephen Jones and Jon Jashni serve as executive producers.
The creative filmmaking team includes director of photography Simon Duggan, production designer Patrick Tatopoulos, editor Wyatt Smith and costume designer Alexandra Byrne.  The music is composed by Federico Jusid.

The arrangement will continue to align the worldwide box office power of Warner Bros.’ tent-pole film business with the fast-growing global popularity of The IMAX Experience, providing the studio with an additional, differentiated platform that consistently delivers the best experience in cinema and strong returns for studios and exhibitors.

The arrangement also underscores the excitement around Warner Bros.’ upcoming slate, which includes many of the most anticipated movie-event titles emerging from Hollywood over the next few years.
