7 Things we are currently obsessed with

Fear The Waking Dead
I must confess I came to Fear The Walking Dead a little late. I was unsure if there was room in my life for another zombie related show as I am so heavily invested in the original Walking Dead and with its many tempestuous turns.

We binged watched the first season of Fear The Walking Dead before attending the second season premiere and we are smitten - of course these shows are less about zombies and more about the emotional roller coaster you are set on as you begin to become involved with the personalities featured in the show. Hopefully FTWD will fill the gap between Walking Dead seasons. A full write up of the Season 2 Premiere (what a night!) will be up soon including a brief chat with legendary producer Gale Anne Hurd.

What did the world look like as it was transforming into the horrifying apocalypse depicted in The Walking Dead? This spin-off set in Los Angeles, following new characters as they face the beginning of the end of the world, will answer that question.

Executive produced by showrunner Dave Erickson, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero and David Alpert, “Fear the Walking Dead” stars Kim Dickens as Madison, Cliff Curtis as Travis, Frank Dillane as Nick, Alycia Debnam-Carey as Alicia, Ruben Blades as Daniel, Mercedes Mason as Ofelia, Lorenzo James Henrie as Chris and Colman Domingo as Strand.

The series from AMC Studios is currently in production on season two in Mexico at Baja Studios, home to some of the greatest ocean-set films in recent years.  “Fear the Walking Dead” will air its second season of 15 episodes in two parts, beginning with the first seven episodes starting in April with the remaining eight episodes airing later in 2016.  Season one, which achieved record-breaking performance worldwide including the highest-rated first season of any series in U.S. cable history, ended with Madison, Travis and their extended family taking temporary shelter in Strand’s gated estate overlooking the Pacific Ocean. As civil unrest continues to grow and the dead take over Los Angeles, Strand prepares to escape to “Abigail,” his large yacht moored offshore.

JOHN BLAKE PUBLISHING release Sean Egan's James Bond: The Secret Files - The Stories Behind Britain's Most Recognised Icon
We were fortunate to receive a copy of John Blake Publishing's latest James Bond book James Bond: The Secret History a while back but have sadly not had a chance to read it yet. I have been short on time but want to give it a thorough read as it promises to be a revealing and insightful behind the scenes look at the making of James Bond as told by many of the people who helped make the legend.

John Blake Publishing is delighted to announce the publication of James Bond: The Secret History, in which Sean Egan explores the stories behind one of Britain’s most recognised and stylish cultural icons.

The most recent release in the James Bond franchise Spectre took £94m in ticket sales in 2015, and in 2016 overtook Avatar to become the third highest grossing film of all time in the UK. Daniel Craig’s Bond movies have grossed over £2 billion worldwide, and given that Craig has now confirmed he will continue with the franchise until at least 2020, it is clear that Bond-fever looks set to grip audiences for many years to come.

Agent 007 made his first appearance – arguably as a propaganda figure – in 1953, when the Cold War still raged. Why, then, is this relic of British fiction history more globally popular than ever before?

In this extremely collectible title, author Sean Egan explores Bond’s enduring popularity, tracing a rich history of tradition and development over more than half a century. From the designer suits and coiffed hair to the classic Aston Martins and mesmerizing gadgetry, Bond is the most visually stylish and British film franchise of them all.

Sean Egan has interviewed many of those who have shaped the Bond universe over the last half century, including Roger Moore; GoldenEye and Casino Royale director Martin Campbell; composer of the iconic Bond theme Monty Norman; and David V Picker, the film executive who brokered the deal to get Sean Connery as Bond.

James Bond: The Secret History is essential reading for both James Bond aficionados and those with a wider interest in British film history, within which Bond continues to play a central role.he legendary music festival is pleased to announce another edition in the Portugal's capital city. Rock in Rio welcomes millions of fans across the world for the greatest names in rock and pop music, all over the planet.

James Bond: The Secret History is published by John Blake Publishing in hardback on 25th February 2016 and priced £16.99

the John Carpenter is playing a Halloween gig in London
This is possibly the most exciting news I have heard this year so far - Legendary film Director John Carpenter will be playing a live gig in London as part of his first tour!

He is most well known for his films like the great Escape from New York, The Thing, Assault on Precinct 13, They Live, The Fog, Halloween and Starman amongst many others. But not only does John Carpenter create great tension fraught tales but he composes the unique electro sound for his films, bringing a unique and engaging ambience to his films. And spawning some of the most recognisable film music from the last 30 years.

To add another accomplishment to his growing list Carpenter has being making non soundtrack music, but that doesn't mean the music is not cinematic! He has released two albums; Lost Themes and most recently Lost Themes II which is the core of his first ever live tour.

ITV's The Durrells
We are loving ITV's Marcella with Anna Friel bringing one of the most watchable, complicated and engaging woman to the small screen for ages. But for a bit of a change of pace I discovered ITV's The Durrells by chance one evening and immediately Sky+'ed the rest of the available season.  I absolutely loved them, they are made with care and warmth that do Gerald Durrell's books justice.

Keeley Hawes (Line of Duty, Ashes to Ashes) plays Louisa Durrell in ITV’s brand new six part series The Durrells, written by acclaimed screenwriter Simon Nye and produced by Sid Gentle Films Ltd. International film star Leslie Caron (An American in Paris, Gigi) also stars in the series.

The Durrells is based upon Gerald Durrell’s classic trilogy of Corfu memoirs including the much loved ‘My Family and Other Animals’. Set in 1935, this timeless drama is full of warmth, humour and fun.

The story focuses upon Louisa Durrell (Hawes) whose life is in meltdown. Her husband died years ago and his money has all but run out. Her four unruly ‘children’ Larry, 21, played by Josh O’Connor (Ripper Street, Peaky Blinders), Leslie, 18, a role taken by newcomer Callum Woodhouse, Margo, 17, played by Daisy Waterstone (Silent Witness, Testament of Youth) and Gerry, 11, with Milo Parker (Mr Holmes, Ghosthunters) cast in the role, are going off the rails. Gerry is obsessed with animals and about to be thrown out of school; Larry is a would-be novelist but the worst estate agent in Bournemouth, and the middle two are hitting adulthood like a car-crash. It is the 1930s, and a woman’s options are limited.

Game of Thrones is back
No doubt you are aware by now that Season 6 of George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones is back.

Video: Maisie Williams (aka Arya Stark) Pranks Game of Thrones Fans

After nearly a year of waiting, the latest series of Game Of Thrones is being shown on television from today.

Series 6 marks the first time the show has overtaken the books with author George RR Martin still to release The Winds Of Winter. Showrunners David Benioff and D B Weiss say despite not having to base episodes on the books, they know exactly where they are going with the story. "We're approaching the finish line, from the outset, our hope was to tell a complete story - beginning, middle and end. "We are writing the final act now, and the last thing we want to do is stay on stage after the play is over." - Excerpt from Sky.com

Powers: Eddie Izzard stars in edgy new crime drama, coming to Spike in May
I was blown away by Season 1 of Powers and absolutely loved it. It was a bit slow to start but I stuck with it and was rewarded as it really came in to its own. The narrative roll-out hints at lots of surprises that engagingly blend into the story and the relationship dynamics of the characters really works and alludes to great chemistry between the actors.

From the team who produced The Walking Dead comes Powers an edgy police crime drama starring Eddie Izzard which turns the concept of superheroes on their head and asks: what if the world was full of superheroes who aren’t heroic at all?

Powers follows the lives of two homicide detectives, Christian Walker played by Sharlto Copley (District 9, Maleficent) and Deena Pilgrim played by Susan Heyward (666 Park Avenue, 30 Rock).  The ensemble cast includes Emmy® Award winning British actor and comedian Eddie Izzard (Valkyrie, Oceans Thirteen, Oceans Twelve, Hannibal) who plays villain Wolfe,  Noah Taylor (Game of Thrones, Peaky Blinders), Michelle Forbes (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, True Blood, The Returned), Olesya Rulin (Halloween High, High School Musical), Max Fowler (Wolf Hall, The Killing), Adam Godley (Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Homeland), and Logan Browning (Bratz, Meet The Browns).

Video: Powers: Exclusive New York Comic-Con Trailer

The Powers Division is assigned to investigate cases involving people with extraordinary abilities, referred to as ‘Powers’.   Set amidst the immediacy of today’s social media culture, Powers asks the questions, what if the world was full of superheroes that aren’t actually heroic at all.  What if all that power was just one more excuse for mischief, mayhem, murder, and endorsement deals?  The Powers Division is brave enough to go up against the overpaid, commercialised, super humans imposing their power over those who both worship and fear them.

Anna-Belen Dunlop, Acting Acquisitions and Channel Manager at Spike comments: “I’m delighted to welcome edgy crime drama, Powers to the Spike schedule.  With great cast and impressive effects, it’s an exciting twist on the superhero genre.  I’m sure our audience will enjoy it as much as From Dusk Till Dawn, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead.”

The series is based on the graphic novel series of the same name, and is executive produced by the team behind Caprica (the prequel to Battlestar Galactica) and iconic comics including Marvel’s Ultimate series, Daredevil and Judge Dredd.  Powers is distributed by Sony Pictures Television.

Netflix & INSA: Daredevil Global GIF. Watch GIF-ITI artist INSA create the first ever global GIF.
Season 1 of Daredevil was cracking - bringing both an adult take on the Super hero genre as well as some of the most exciting and engaging fight scenes adapted from Frank Miller's run of Daredevil to the small screen. Did I mention the great cast yet? In season 1 we got to see Matt Murdock's transformation from Hells Kitchen youth to beleaguered saviour of the city as he took on Vincent D'Onofrio's misguided and misunderstood Kingpin.

Just when Matt thinks he is bringing order back to the city, new forces are rising in Hell’s Kitchen. Now the Man Without Fear must take on a new adversary in Frank Castle and face an old flame – Elektra Natchios.

But with the promise of former love interest & elite warrior Elektra and Marvel's greatest anti hero The Punisher appearing in Season 2 it's shaping up to be a hell of a show.

Netflix is changing the way we watch TV. Popular TV shows are crossing borders with friends all over the world able to enjoy Marvel’s Daredevil at the exact same time. Finland's first super hero film RENDEL gets an English teaser trailer
RENDEL is a Finnish superhero film to be released in 2016-2017. It is the very first full-length superhero film from Finland, and it introduces world a completely new superhero Rendel. Follow Rendel http://www.facebook.com/rendelmovie

Rendel’s way to the big screen has been long, but certain. The beginning of the story goes way back to the Director Jesse Haaja’s schoolboy years.

The superhero was born 17 years ago when Haaja scratched down the first drafts of his own comic character. The idea of a dark superhero and a branch around it had been planted. Through the years the idea kept developing and strengthening in Haaja’s mind, but stayed, more or less, as a distant dream. The young schoolboy didn’t know then that one day he would be presenting his superhero to the film professionals all over the world in the Cannes Film Festival.

In March 2013 on his 30th birthday, Haaja sat home with a glass of whiskey, and without thinking further, decided this was the time to make a superhero film. Nowadays a successful entrepreneur with his own advertising company, Haaja was in front of a completely different kind of a field, filmmaking. The first idea of a short film quickly escalated towards an ambitious script of a full-length action feature.

Matt Damon returns to his most iconic role in Jason Bourne. Paul Greengrass, the director of The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, once again joins Damon for the next chapter of Universal Pictures’ Bourne franchise, which finds the CIA’s most lethal former operative drawn out of the shadows.

Video: Jason Bourne - Official Trailer 1 (Universal Pictures)

For Jason Bourne, Damon is joined by Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel and Tommy Lee Jones, while Julia Stiles reprises her role in the series.  Frank Marshall again produces alongside Jeffrey Weiner for Captivate Entertainment, and Greengrass, Damon, Gregory Goodman and Ben Smith also produce.  Based on characters created by Robert Ludlum, the film is written by Greengrass and Christopher Rouse

Director Paul Greengrass comments on bringing Bourne back to the big screen in JASON BOURNE:
Jason Bourne isn’t a super hero; he doesn’t wear a cape or a mask. He’s not one of those kinds of guys. He is just an ordinary man. I think when people watch Jason Bourne they can imagine how they might react in those situations and those circumstances, and when you see him thinking his way through and coming up with a plan and executing his plan, that’s incredibly exciting.” – Paul Greengrass

“It has taken us a long time to come back because we didn’t have the right story before. The world needed to change and then there comes that moment when it makes sense. You know when it feels right and that’s when you do it, not before.” – Paul Greengrass.

JASON BOURNE will be released in UK cinemas July 29th.

Shane Black's The Nice Guys gets brand new character posters
Anything Shane Black is involved in gets our attention - but when he is working with Producer Joel Silver again you know it's going to good - but add two vastly different and exciting performers in top form like Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe and you have dynamite (and a welcome return to the buddy picture). And the trailers so far have only affirmed this.

“The Nice Guys” takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, when down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Gosling) and hired enforcer Jackson Healy (Crowe) must work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power.

Shane Black directed the film from an original screenplay he wrote with Anthony Bagarozzi.  Joel Silver (“Non-Stop,” “The Matrix” films, the “Sherlock Holmes” films) produced the film under his Silver Pictures banner.  Ken Kao, Hal Sadoff, Alex Walton and Michael J. The Legend of Tarzan starring Alexander Skarsgård, Margot Robbie, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson

I have a particular fascination with Tarzan, maybe it's because I grew up in Africa, maybe it's because I was surrounded by nature and animals or maybe it's because during my pre-teens I read Tarzan Of The Apes Burne Hogarth's incredible visual interpretation of Edgar Rice Burroughs classic tale. It frightened, saddened and exhilarated me at the same time. For all intents and purposes it was an adult vision of Tarzan that I had never imagined possible before.

Legitimization of “the 9th Art” — as the French have defined comics — prompted Hogarth to reconsider the mythic jungle lord of his early career and re-envision Tarzan in a modern format two decades after his last strip. In 1972, Hogarth published the prototypical graphic novel, “Tarzan of the Apes” (1972). This large-format, 160-page hard-bound volume was published in 11 languages, serving as a demarcation between juvenile comic books and a sequential art form in which pictorial narrative is both mature and enduring.

With “Tarzan of the Apes,” Hogarth finally visualized the Edgar Rice Burroughs story as he wanted. Free of editorial interference, he interpreted the literature as a true Homeric epic. He transfused the power of Renaissance and Baroque artists — as well as German Expressionism, European “9th Art” and the art of the Far East — into new and dramatic pictorial fiction. - Excerpt from Burnehogarth.com

Up until the mid Eighties when people asked what comics they should read it was in the top 3 and it is still essential reading for me to this day. And David Yates' The Legend of Tarzan seems to have drawn on that vision at least as presented in the first trailer. Hopefully it's not the old bait and switch that sometimes happens with big blockbusters of this sort, where they lure us in, but the film, specifically the tone is nothing like the trailer and actually a very different film - I'm holding thumbs that it doesn't break it's stride.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures comes the action adventure “The Legend of Tarzan,” starring Alexander Skarsgård (HBO’s “True Blood”) as the legendary character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

The film also stars Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson (“Pulp Fiction,” the “Captain America” films), Margot Robbie (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot”), Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou (“Blood Diamond,” “Gladiator”), with Oscar winner Jim Broadbent (“Iris”), and two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz (“Inglourious Basterds,” “Django Unchained”).

The Legend of Tarzn Teaser Poster
The Legend of Tarzan Teaser Poster [VIEW]

It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side.  Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Leon Rom (Waltz).  But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.

The Establishing Shot: THE LEGEND OF TARZAN TRAILER - 8 JULY 2016

David Yates (the final four “Harry Potter” films, upcoming “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”) directed “The Legend of Tarzan” from a screenplay by Adam Cozad and Craig Brewer, story by Brewer and Cozad based on the Tarzan stories created by Burroughs.  Legendary producer Jerry Weintraub (“Behind the Candelabra,” the “Ocean’s” trilogy) produced the film, together with David Barron (the “Harry Potter” films, “Cinderella”), Alan Riche (“Southpaw”) and Tony Ludwig (“Starsky & Hutch”).  Susan Ekins, Nikolas Korda, Keith Goldberg, David Yates, Mike Richardson and Bruce Berman served as executive producers.

The behind-the-scenes creative team included director of photography Henry Braham (“The Golden Compass”), Oscar-winning production designer Stuart Craig (“Dangerous Liaisons,” “The English Patient,” the “Harry Potter” films), editor Mark Day (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Parts 1 & 2”), and Oscar-nominated costume designer Ruth Myers (“Emma,” “Unknown”).  The music is composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams (“Grown Ups”).

“The Legend of Tarzan” was shot at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, as well as on location around the UK.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, a Jerry Weintraub Production, a Riche/Ludwig Production, a David Yates Film, “The Legend of Tarzan.” Slated for release worldwide beginning July 1, 2016, the film will be distributed in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
There is no denying it J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them looks absolutely fantastic.

J.K. Rowling’s expanded quote regarding “Fantastic Beasts”:

It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ into a film. I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of ‘Fantastic Beasts,’ realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.

As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros.

Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.

I particularly want to thank Kevin Tsujihara of Warner Bros. for his support in this project, which would not have happened without him. I always said that I would only revisit the wizarding world if I had an idea that I was really excited about and this is it.”

In Talking Film with Edith Bowman News

Nick Frost updates on the Paul sequel
Over here at The Establishing Shot we are fans of the ground breaking careers of Nick Frost and Simon Pegg - both in their combined capacity as well as individually - so when I received this tidbit in my mailbox I was half hoping that it would include an update on Season 2 of Nick Frost's Mr. Sloane. Sadly not.

At the end of last month Virgin Radio relaunched it's Virgin Radio Breakfast Show (on a moving train complete with live performances from bands including Travis, The Feeling, Walking On Cars, Gavin James and Mystery Jets.) to be hosted by none other than the illustrious Mz. Edith Bowman. Who had a chat with Nick Frost.

A photo posted by @edibow on

Nick Frost, speaking on Edith Bowman’s Virgin Radio breakfast show, confirmed that there was not going to be a second Paul. When asked by Edith if there was to be a sequel to the hit film, he said: “No, I think that time’s come and gone. There was a tiny sniff I think of someone saying ‘why don’t we do it as a TV show in America’, but that kind of went away. I just think it’s so expensive to make – as in him – that, you know…it was nice as it was.”

He was also asked who would play him if a film was to be made of his life, to which he replied: “Maybe Ray Winstone to play me. I love him – we text each other every weekend when West Ham play. He always texts me inappropriate jokes, the kind of jokes an over-friendly cabbie would tell you.”

Dawn O'Porter admits possibility of a future collaboration with her husband, actor Chris O'Dowd
Having followed Chris O'Dowd's career from the heady early days of the hilarious I.T. Crowd then being fortunate to meet the man himself and have a laugh over a Jamesons at the Jameson Empire Done in 60 Seconds Global Final Dinner and over the course of the evening discover what a genuinely funny and heart warming man he is I can only but hope to see him in bigger and bigger roles as his talent.

Dawn O’Porter this morning admitted that there is the possibility of a future collaboration with her husband, Irish actor Chris O’Dowd. Speaking to Edith Bowman’s Breakfast Show on Virgin Radio and when asked by Edith whether about the possibility of working with her husband, Dawn (pictured) said:

“Oh, I don’t know…I don’t know. I like the idea of it, but again, I’m a lot cleverer than he is, so he would get intimidated, he would get agitated and it would just cause problems in our marriage, so…I’m not sure. I like the idea of it.”

Dawn went on to speak about her own acting background, adding: “I went to drama school, yeah, but I couldn’t bear being around actors [laughs]. No, I thought it was what I wanted to do, but actually it wasn’t. I want to write, so…I like the idea of writing something that Chris could potentially be in one day. That would be good. That’s a collab that we will talk about.”

Kirsten Dunst on Virgin Radio: I give directors chances all the time – especially female directors
In an interview with Edith Bowman on Edith’s breakfast show, Hollywood actress Kirsten Dunst provides valuable insight into how she chooses which roles to accept from the numerous scripts that she is offered.

She said: “I’m director driven – I don’t care what the role is, I really don’t. As long as it’s a director that I believe in then I will go there, because I know that everyone that they put around them, whoever collaborates on the film, will be working just as hard. So I just want to work with the best people creatively that I can. But then I also give chances to directors all the time…like, I’ve done so many first time directors – especially female directors.”

Edith also asked Kirsten about her musical interest and particularly what music reminds her of her childhood, to which she answers: “REM…and Guns N’ Roses. I just listened to whatever my Mum listened to…like the Les Mis soundtrack. And I remember a lot of Candle in the Wind! Me and my girlfriend, she had long dark curly hair, so I’d be Axel and she’d be Slash, and we’d rock out in the mirror.”

Edith Bowman’s Breakfast Show broadcasts on Virgin Radio every weekday morning from 6am to 10am. More information can be found at virginradio.co.uk

Toby Jones, Anne Reid and Sinéad Matthews lead impressive line-up in British psychological thriller, “Kaleidoscope”
Principal photography has begun on Kaleidoscope, an original feature and directorial debut from Rupert Jones. The shoot takes place primarily in a London based studio set, tailor-built for the production.

Toby Jones (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Berberian Sound Studio, Dad’s Army) takes the lead role, as Carl. With an accomplished variety of award winning career performances – from big-budget studio features, to independent films – Kaleidoscope sees Jones returning to the British cinematic scene that he has become so well renowned for.

Joining Toby is Anne Reid (The Mother, Last Tango in Halifax, Dinnerladies), BAFTA nominee and MBE, Reid is an iconic British actress of television, stage and screen. Rising star Sinéad Matthews (Mr. Turner, Happy-Go-Lucky) plays Abby, discovered whilst at RADA by Mike Leigh, Matthews went on to play the role of Dawn in Leigh’s stage production of Ecstasy.

Kaleidoscope is a taut, psychological thriller that explores the inescapability of a destructive relationship between a middle-aged man and his mother. At the heart of this modern day ‘Psycho’ are some unsettling questions: Can we ever escape the role in which we are cast by our early circumstances? Must a perpetrator first be a victim?

Kaleidoscope isproduced by Matthew James Wilkinson of Stigma Films and Maggie Monteith (Searching for Sugar Man, Brotherhood, The Experiment) of Dignity Film Finance under the production banner of Longships Films Ltd. Executive producers are Chris Reed and Phil Rymer with Roopesh Parekh (Poldark, And Then There Were None) co-producing.

The project is writer-director Rupert Jones’s first original feature film, following his success with shorts, pop promos, television and theatre work. Producer Matthew James Wilkinson, formerly in a development exec at Working Title, has produced high-end shorts, including Ernestine & Kit directed by Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners). His debut feature film The Call Up releases in the UK later this year.

“We are delighted to have Toby, Anne and Sinead leading the cast,” Wilkinson commented. “The script is a character driven story that requires the best actors to bring these characters to life. We couldn’t be happier to have secured such incredible talent in Toby, Anne and Sinéad.”

Edinburgh International Film Festival is delighted to announce that the much anticipated remake of the iconic Scottish comedy Whisky Galore! will close the 70th edition of the festival on Sunday 26th June 2016.

Inspired by Sir Compton Mackenzie’s 1947 novel, Whisky Galore! is written by award-winning screenwriter Peter McDougall and based on the true story of a shipwreck off the coast of Eriskay of a ship sailing for America with a cargo of export-only alcohol during World War II. The Scottish islanders, in the midst of a wartime drought of whisky, are determined to take advantage of an unexpected windfall despite opposition from the local Home Guard Captain.

In the evening, we’ll be hosting an intimate supper club at a secret location, feasting on four courses of delicious food with lightning talks from empowering guest speakers to inspire tantalizing conversation.

Heartburn (1987) + Intro: RIO CINEMA AT 1PM: BOOK TICKETS
Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson are wonderful together in this dark look at modern romance headed for failure, based on Nora Ephron's painfully personal autobiographical best-selling novel. She's food writer who gives up her career for love and family. He's a playboy newspaper political columnist who can't quite give up his old tricks. If that combination doesn't give a relationship Heartburn, nothing will! Directed by Mike Nichols (The Graduate, Working Girl),

Julie & Julia (2009) + Intro: RIO CINEMA AT 3.15PM: BOOK TICKETS
A culinary legend provides a frustrated office worker with a new recipe for life in Julie & Julia, the true story of how Julia Child’s (Meryl Streep) life and cookbook inspired fledgling writer Julie Powell (Amy Adams) to whip up 524 recipes in 365 days.

Secret Supper Club: Nora Ephron’s Last Supper *BOOKING DETAILS TO BE ANNOUNCED*
Four courses, four conversations. We’ll be serving a quartet of delicious dishes inspired by Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia at an exclusive dinner party inspired by home cook and hostess extraordinaire Ephron herself. Between courses, diners will hear lightning talks from guest speakers.

Corrina Antrobus, Director & Founder of the Bechdel Test Fest: “We’re delighted to be joining so many of our passions - food, film, writing and discussion - into one exciting all-day event. We want to celebrate Nora’s writing, wit and wisdom in the hope that we can inspire a new generation of fearless female writers and filmmakers and do what we do best - create conversation. I’m particularly thrilled to be hosting for the first time at the beautiful Rio Cinema in my home town of Hackney where I enjoyed my first ever cinema experience!”

Simran Hans, Film Programmer and Producer of Nora Ephron’s Last Supper: It’s really special to be able to pay tribute to a woman who was hungry for life in a way that honours her legacy. I’m especially excited to be putting a spotlight on Heartburn, a film whose rawness made it hard to stomach at the time. I hope that when people revisit it, they are able to enjoy the way in which Nora Ephron’s writing was sharp as well as sweet.

The Bechdel Test Fest is an ongoing celebration of films that succeed in representing women in a positive and progressive light. The festival first launched as a year-long initiative celebrating the 30th anniversary of US animator Alison Bechdel's comic ‘The Rule’. It will continue to host much-loved classics, newly-released films, female-focused titles neglected for UK distribution. All events include Q&As or lively panel discussions and aim to raise the profile of and the conversation about issues that affect women on screen and behind the camera.

Mods 'n' Robbers - 2016 Southend Film Festival Launches With Two World Premieres
Everyone loves a heist movie. From cinema-goers to the writers, directors and stars themselves, there’s something about a rip-snorting crime caper that makes a trip to the flicks perfect. And what better than a fast-paced British Gangster movie?

London Heist launches the eighth annual Southend on Sea Film Festival, with a world premiere Gala screening at Southend’s Odeon cinema on 26 May 2016 to open the 5-day programme.

Jack Cregan – played by former Eastenders and Hollywood star, Craig Fairbrass – a career criminal, family man and vicious armed robber sets out on a mission for revenge after his father, Alfie, is brutally murdered and their money from a Heathrow airport heist is stolen. Set against the backdrop of the gritty streets of London and Spain’s seductive Costa del Sol, London Heist is a gripping revenge thriller along the lines of genre classics Point Blank and Heat. Afterwards, Craig will be on hand along with his fellow actors to talk about the film and take part in a Q & A session.

In addition to London Heist, another film will receive its very first public screening the same evening.

Midnight Of My Life, stars The Hobbit and Sherlock actor Martin Freeman as Steve Marriott, lead singer with Mod superstars The Small Faces, in a poignant study of talent, ageing and what success means. The director is Phil Davies –  as an actor, star of quintessential Mod movie, Quadrophenia, plus many more TV hits such as Poldark and Ripper Street – and he will introduce the film during the Gala opening night.

It’s July 1985, and while the megastars of rock and pop are strutting their stuff at Wembley, Steve Marriott is propping up the bar of a dingy pub in Putney, waiting to play to a small crowd of boozers. Bitter and drunk, an encounter with a young revival Mod restores his faith in music.

Announcing the quality-packed five-day programme, Festival Director Paul Cotgrove said: “An essential aspect of the festival is that it showcases new British films. We’re showcasing two exciting new films at the start of the festival and closing it with another, an affectionate and heart-warming documentary called ‘Under the Radar: The Mike Edmonds Story’. One of Southend’s favourite sons, Mike Edmonds has appeared in some of cinema’s biggest films, including ‘Return of the Jedi’, ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ and the Harry Potter series.”

He added “Other new, British features are sprinkled throughout the festival, together with the usual mix of World Cinema, classics, documentaries, children’s films and fan favourites. You’ll also find many of the features are supported by short films, all of which, I am very proud to say, are from the UK, emphasising just how much talent there is in our own industry.”

2016 INTO FILM AWARDS WINNERS ANNOUNCED
14 UK schools and young filmmakers recognised by leading film talent including Michael Sheen, Simon Pegg and Ed Skrein at ceremony

Into Film has announced the recipients of its 2nd annual Into Film Awards, which pay tribute to outstanding 5 – 19 year olds from across the UK who have demonstrated exceptional achievements in filmmaking and film reviewing. The education organisation, supported by the BFI through Lottery funding, honoured the young filmmakers during a formal red carpet ceremony this afternoon at Odeon Leicester Square.

2016 Into Film Awards
2016 Into Film Awards
Schools, youth organisations and students from all over the UK applied for consideration in the Awards, with nominations exploring a wide range of issues including learning to understand politics, the environment, homelessness, regeneration, fair trade, living with disability, pushing boundaries and exploration. The non-filmmaking categories - the film clubs of the year, reviewers of the year and teacher of the year - recognised creative use of film as an educational tool in school. Winners hail from across the UK, with young people from Wales, Cornwall, Cheshire, North Lincolnshire, Buckinghamshire, Scotland, London and Dorset being recognised for their achievements, encouraging them towards the development of their learning and future film careers. And adding to its blockbuster year, STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS walked away with First News’ Best Family Film of the Year Award, as voted for by young people.

14 coveted gongs were awarded this year, selected by a panel of industry leaders including Into Film Ambassadors Michael Sheen (FROST/NIXON) and Naomie Harris (SPECTRE), alongside Peter Lord (Aardman Animations), Christine Langan (Head of BBC Films) and director Tom Hooper (THE DANISH GIRL). Michael Sheen was joined by fellow film industry talent including Simon Pegg (MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROUGE NATION), Ed Skrein (DEADPOOL), Amma Asante (BELLE), Stephen Mangan (RUSH), David Gyasi (INTERSTELLAR), Sara Bennett (EX-MACHINA) to present the awards.

Michael Sheen commented:
It's been a real pleasure to be one of this year's judges for the Into Film Awards. The films are of such high quality and it's really exciting to see young people with so much talent receiving such fantastic support in their creative efforts. Everyone wins. A real success story all round."

Barbara Broccoli OBE, Into Film Board Member, said:
Creating films takes real passion, commitment and drive and I’m delighted the Into Film Awards acknowledge the hard work that these young people, the next generation of filmmakers, have put in over this last year. Apart from being great fun, this day also offers nominees the chance to see their films on one of the biggest screens in the UK, the Odeon Leicester Square, as well as meeting established actors, directors and producers; for some, it is the first time they’ve visited the capital. It’s also our chance to thank the teachers who run our film clubs and use film in the classroom. Into Film places film at the heart of learning, reaching a million young people each year through clubs, online content, filmmaking and training to support classroom teaching.”

Naomie Harris added:
I was thrilled to be part of the judging panel for this year’s Into Film Awards. Making films is never easy, but these nominees show that it can be done with little or no budget and a lot of heart. What has impressed me most is the enthusiastic and expressive approach these young filmmakers took – with original ideas, captivating performances, engaging narrative, creative costume design, atmospheric music – these short films had it all. It’s wonderful that the Into Film Awards offer young people a platform to showcase their work and acknowledge the filmmakers of tomorrow. It’s a strong starting point for anyone wishing to forge a career in film.”

Into Film aims to put film at the heart of young people's education, contributing to their cultural, creative, academic and personal development. Working with the education sector, film industry and arts and cultural organisations, Into Film is available to every school, college and youth group across the UK and gives children and young people the chance to experience film creatively and critically, as well as learn about the film industry and careers within it. Its film clubs and annual Into Film Festival provide numerous opportunities for teaching and learning through film, including access to a diverse catalogue of films, special events and activities, and resources which seek to ignite and cultivate the interest of all young people regardless of their background or ability. Training, CPD and resources are provided to give teachers and youth leaders the tools to support engagement at all levels and promote the use of film as a powerful education resource.

The winners of the 2016 award were chosen by a group of ten partners, field leaders in film and social change: Ford Foundation, Sundance Institute, Participant Media, Bertha Foundation, Chicken & Egg Pictures, Compton Foundation, The Center for Media & Social Impact, The Fledgling Fund, BRITDOC Foundation and Media Impact Funders.

“Some of the most pressing issues of the day. Some of the most socially conscious funders around. Some of the most fascinating discussions to be a part of,” said Tabitha Jackson, Director of Sundance Institute’s Documentary Film Program, responding to her experience choosing the winners.

Charting the story of their achievements and sharing best practice for the whole field, five Impact Reports have been published on the winning films. Additionally, this year’s winners will each receive $5,000, generously donated by The Fledgling Fund, to reward their extraordinary commitment, passion and accomplishments in using storytelling to provoke change.

“Collectively I think they give us an understanding of the deep impact that films can have on important social justice issues and also illustrate how different that impact can be,” said Sheila Leddy, The Fledgling Fund’s Executive Director. “Congratulations to all the winners and nominees!” she added.

2016 will also see the return of the #DocImpactHi5 Award; a further $5,000 for the film that receives the most support tweets and retweets in the four days following the announcement.

THE WINNING FILMS
Caty Borum Chattoo, the Co-Director of the Center for Media & Social Impact who was also on the selection panel explained, “This year’s award-winners represent the incredible range of global documentary projects that not only tell beautiful stories, but continue to effect change on some of the most important social justice challenges of our era.”

The winning films cover diverse territories and far-reaching issues of environmental and social justice. Filmed in The Arctic, Hong Kong, South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and farmland across the United States, the films deal with everything from documenting climate change and fighting for farmworkers’ rights to defending a national park against corruption and mineral exploitation; from threats to our privacy from state surveillance agencies to fighting for the victims of a state-sanctioned massacre.

The 2016 winners are:

CHASING ICE, Dir. Jeff Orlowski, Prods. Paula DuPré Pesmen and Jerry Aronson  (@ChasingIce)
Chasing Ice is the story of one man’s mission to change the tide of history by gathering undeniable evidence of our changing planet. Following acclaimed photographer James Balog, Chasing Ice plays like an adventure film, shifting the hearts and minds of audiences globally.

CITIZENFOUR, Dir. Laura Poitras (@citizenfour)
After filmmaker Laura Poitras received encrypted emails from someone with information on the US government's massive covert-surveillance programs, she and reporter Glenn Greenwald flew to Hong Kong to meet the sender, who turned out to be Edward Snowden. The film exposes the reality of mass surveillance and its consequences for personal privacy and public policy.

FOOD CHAINS, Dir. Sanjay Rawal, Prod. Smriti Keshari (@FoodChainsFilm)
Food Chains exposes the exploitation of farm workers in the agriculture industry in the US, the complicity of government and corporations in perpetuating human rights abuses, and the role consumers can play in ending some of the most egregious human rights violations in the country. Championing the Fair Food Program, Food Chains delivers citizen advocates and supports the farmworkers taking on the food super chains.

MINERS SHOT DOWN, Dir. Rehad Desai, Prod. Anita Khanna (@MinersShotDown)
Nearly 40 miners were shot dead by South African police service at the Marikana Massacre in 2012 - the single most lethal use of force by South African security forces against civilians since 1960. Miners Shot Down reveals the truth about what really happened, the deep fault lines it has exposed in South Africa's nascent democracy and it calls for justice for the miners and their widows.

VIRUNGA, Dir. Orlando von Einsiedel, Prod. Joanna Natasegara (@VirungaMovie)
Virunga is the incredible true story of a group of brave individuals risking their lives to save Africa’s oldest national park in the midst of renewed civil war and a scramble for the region’s natural resources. The film brought worldwide attention to the threat to the park from British mining company SOCO International, in the process forging an international coalition of partners to protect Virunga.

Whicker’s World Foundation Awards Finalists Announced
This is the first year of the Whicker's World Foundation Awards, a new fund for documentary makers set up in memory of legendary broadcaster Alan Whicker.
The foundation has been overwhelmed by the strong, compelling and potentially groundbreaking entries they have received from across the globe.

Finalists in all  three Award categories: the Funding Award, Veteran's Award and Audio Award have been selected by the judges , the winners to be announced in June 2016 at the Sheffield International Documentary Festival.

Former Conservative cabinet minister Norman Fowler(78) is one of the finalists for the Veteran's Award for his series The Truth about AIDS whilst the

Audio Award finalists include broadcasts that were almost unbearably moving without an ounce of sentiment. They took the listener from the bottom of the Bago river, into the bedroom and out on the high seas with a pirate and a bottle of bourbon

The top prize is the Funding Award of £80,000 to under-30s looking to make their first full-length documentary.

The five finalists, who will be pitching their ideas at Sheffield Doc/Fest in June, proposed stories from Burma, South Sudan, the Amazon, the USA and Syria.

The announcement about the biggest prize for a single TV documentary idea for emerging talent under 30 will come after the nominees for the funding award have pitched their idea live to judging panel at the Cutler’s Hall in Sheffield at noon on 14th June. Tickets for this session are available from Doc/Fest. https://sheffdocfest.com. The aim is that the winner will exhibit their completed film at Doc/Fest 2017.

Cult Cinema: An Arrow Video Companion Limited Edition Hardback Book
Arrow Video is one of the foremost distributors of cult cinema on DVD and Blu-ray. From the classic to the obscure, the Arrow Video collection encompasses all styles and genres: horror films and Westerns, science fiction and sex comedies, yakuza epics and neo-noirs, the subversive, the transgressive and the unclassifiable. This hardback volume brings together 25 of the world's leading genre experts and critics to guide you through the multi-faceted beast that is cult cinema.

Cult Cinema: An Arrow Video Companion
Cult Cinema: An Arrow Video Companion [VIEW
Exploring the stars, the filmmakers and the trends, Cult Cinema: An Arrow Video Companion approaches its subject from five angles. Each section is devoted to a different facet of cult filmmaking - the opening chapter features seven essays devoted to key cult movies, and is followed by those on directors, actors, genres (and sub-genres), and finally distribution, which examines how different methods of seeing a film, from travelling shows to DVDs, has allowed cult films and their audiences to flourish.

The aim is not to provide a definitive guide to cult cinema but rather, as the subtitle proclaims, a companion. Cult movies means many things to many people - Ben Wheatley's introduction touches on the manner in which he discovered the underbelly of cinema, but it won't be shared by everyone, of course - and everyone will have their own favorites.

Consider this book as a look at cult cinema through the lens of Arrow Video, a pretty broad view: Tinto Brass, Joe Dante, science fiction, super 8, Suzuki Seijun, Boris Karloff, Battle Royale, horror all-nighters, video nasties and much more besides. Something familiar, something fresh, something that might just introduce you to a whole new world of filmmaking and its enthusiastic fandom.

Complete list or writers: Robin Bougie, Michael Brooke, Paul Corupe, David Del Valle, David Flint, Cullen Gallagher, Kevin Gilvear, Joel Harley, David Hayles, Pasquale Iannone, Alan Jones, Tim Lucas, Michael Mackenzie, Maitland McDonagh, Tom Mes, John Kenneth Muir, Kim Newman, James Oliver, Vic Pratt, Jasper Sharp, Kenneth J. Souza, Mike Sutton, Stephen Thrower, Caelum Vatnsdal, and Douglas Weir.
