Sadly we missed Salute which looks like a powerful documentary based on an event from history that I was not aware of - the infamous human rights Black Power Salute at the 1968 Mexico Olympics and how this major event in Olympic history had a major global impact not only on human rights and racial equality at all subsequent Olympics but for human rights on a global scale.

Last night we attended the very swish launch for the Virgin Media Shorts film competition at Sketch and whilst wildly impressed with the venue, it came in second to the great company and people I met last night including Jason Wingard last year's Virgin Media Shorts Grand Prize with his short 2:20 which you can see below. We should have a write up of last night's launch up soon.

The team behind Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance in the UK are making it hard for me not to break their embargo stopping any opinion about Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance being leaked ahead of it's release next week

They have just sent me this Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance - Bagger Demolition Clip. Which in my opinion is part of one of the best action scenes of the film. In the clip you can see a darkly devious Nicolas Cage as the Ghost Rider taking on a small mercenary army after transforming a Bagger or Bucket-wheel excavator (a heavy duty digging machine used in large-scale open pit mining operations) into one of his spirit vehicles - something Director's Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor explore in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. The destruction is awesomely set to the riff of Led Zeppelin's Kashmir.

Chronicle came in at No.1 over the weekend pulling in £13.8 Million, pipping The Woman In Black's £13.1 Million draw. To commemorate this occasion we thought we would put up a special video that compiles all the best bits of Chronicle, some unused footage that will make its way into Chronicle 2 the sequel.

Last night I was lucky enough to go along to see The Amazing Spider-Man Sneak Peek into the Untold Story Event. I had absolutely no idea of what to expect going into the event and organisers were very tight lipped. We got the heads about the event from the The Amazing Spider-Man Viral Projections that took place in 13 Cities around the world.

We are still 7 months away from Marvel's The Amazing Spider-Man reboot hitting screens on 4 July, 2012 and a month away from Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance being unleashed onto screens on 17 February, 2012

But, as it is a New Year and I have been assessing The Establishing Shot's current position and what I would like to achieve with it this year. After some careful consideration I have realised, what The Establishing Shot is really missing, is a piece about Auteur David Fincher's thoughts on doing a superhero film and more specifically Spider-Man. So I dug out this clip of David Fincher explaining why he wasn’t interested in doing superhero films apart from Spider-Man.

David Fincher was on Sony's short-list to direct Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and more recently it was reported that he was again up for the reboot The Amazing Spider-Man which we all now know will be helmed by Marc Webb. Although I have seen his quirky 500 Days of Summer Webb is still largely an unknown quantity for me, which I kind of like as I'm going in to see The Amazing Spider-Man with few preconceptions - apart from high expectations from Andrew Garfield and after rewatching the trailer I'm getting excited about Spider-Man again.

Sony has shown us some dark imagery and a poster for The Amazing Spider-Man as well as a pretty awesome teaser trailer (all of which can be accessed from the official site here!) displaying a deeper emotional side to Spider-Man - previously unexplored then switching to some spectacular visuals with his POV web-slinging. I only wish the music was better, it would have made a huge difference. But I saw the trailer a while back at a demonstration of Sony's 3D projectors and was blown away seeing the trailer up on big screen in 3D.

I've been getting a couple of requests for my thoughts on The Dark Knight Rises prologue, some, from guys nowhere near an IMAX so below I’ve tried to give as much detail as I can. My post is split into 3 segments; the first outlining why The Dark Knight Rises could be good, the second running through the footage of the prologue and 1 minute montage from The Dark Knight Rises with commentary and the third some thoughts. Batman Begins Arkham Asylum Stairwell London Film Location

Christopher Nolan transformed London in to Gotham City for Batman Begins, and nowhere is that more striking than the real‑world location used for Arkham Asylum. Visiting the site reveals how Christopher Nolan grounded the film’s darkest moments in a tangible, atmospheric space that still carries the weight of its on‑screen history. Giving Gotham a grounded, architectural realism. Visiting the filming location reveals how the production transformed the site into one of the film’s most memorable settings.

In anticipation of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises the finale of his Batman trilogy, my chosen iconic Film Location this time round is from the film that started it all – Christopher Nolan’s 2005 Superhero masterpiece Batman Begins.

As well as locations in Hertfordshire where Christopher Nolan went to school, Nolan has a fondness for London locations that he knows and likes. Having spent time in London studying at both the University College London and Raindance Film School. Nolan knows his way around London and certainly has favourite locations that he re-uses in a number of his films.

Short on time I unfortunately can't get my BIG SCREEN coverage up soon enough or the pile of film reviews that I have lined up. So herewith are my Top 13 photos from Empire's BIG SCREEN as chosen by Flickr viewers. Expect this list to change over the coming weeks as the photos start showing up search results and on fans radars but in the meantime here are my current most popular photos from BIG SCREEN.

The other night I went along to what is the most fun film I have seen this year - 30 Minutes or Less. Before the screening we were treated to Pizza and refreshments in the Odeon West End's lounge. Whilst I was in the rather large crowd I noticed a young couple, something about the female of the pair struck me as familiar - slowly it dawned on me that she was a Cosplay Phoenix and in one of my most viewed pictures from Kapow! Comic Con her other half was a Ghosbuster. It felt a bit weird, like seeing a super hero in their regular civilian clothes.

That combined with my recent experience of the Empire BIG SCREEN convention I thought I would share my most popular photos from the Kapow! Comic Con. Predictably many of them are Cosplay pics.

No. 10 - Kapow! Comic Con : Cosplay - Lyra from Eternal Descent

Recently I watched the Superman Anthology Blu-ray set. Or rather recently I watched most of the Superman Anthology Blu-ray set as the set I received was missing the two films I was most looking forward to seeing in glorious high definition; Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut and Superman Returns.

I also unfortunately made a not so regrettable error. When the Superman Anthology arrived I thought I would watch the 2 final series of Smallville in their entirety essentially Smallville covers The New Adventures of Superboy comics before he heads off to Metropolis and makes a good springboard into the Superman film series.

My error was thinking that I could possibly make my way through 37 hours of Smallville and then another whopping 15 hours or so of Blu-ray high resolution goodness in a reasonable amount of time. Well I'm on the other side now and my review of The Superman Anthology will be up soon.

In the meantime I came across this incredible clip of the deleted opening of Superman Returns it is apparently on the extras of the Superman Returns Blu-ray. I remember getting a heads up about this clip awhile back, but I thoughtI would rather wait for the official release. But I received the link to it again last night and while I was in a Superman mood gave it a spin. HOLY COW!

I enjoyed Superman Returns, granted it was a little flat and didn't quite live up to my expectation but I was glad to see the cape on again. After watching the deleted clip with my MDR-XB300 Extra Bass headphones to really accentuate the sound. I am in absolute awe.

I can't help but think that leaving this opening in would have really lifted the entire film just that little bit by reminding us that Superman is different and set a tone that for Superman Returns that would have made the remainder of the film that struggled to show us how human he is a little more cohesive.

Anyone know why it didn't make the final cut? All I can think is that if they used it they were limiting growth for a possible sequel or that they were concerned that some of the scenery may be a bit repetitive later on. It is absolutely astounding and has to be seen.

After being leaked onto the internet. The official The Amazing Spider-Man Trailer has been released.

Some interesting camera work and they seem to have learned a thing from Christopher Nolan as The Amazing Spider-Man has taken a darker tone. But apart from some really good casting Andrew Garfield = Peter Parker so far it seems to be very similar to the earlier Spider-Man films?

My thoughts have now been updated over here after seeing the trailer in 3D on the big screen.

There was a point about 3 minutes into Thor where I had sudden realisation, it’s the same realisation that I had recently when watching Iron Man 2 and Tron: Legacy. Here I was sitting in a cinema, watching a big screen filled with imagery and characters that I had imagined in my mind many times over.

If you read my blog you know that I read a lot of comics and yes I used to read a lot Marvel’s The Mighty Thor. Growing up I had allegiance to DC Comics and but the few Marvel characters that I did read I had a real attachment to. I think DC’s simplistic world view of evil & good was easier to digest as a kid than Marvel’s more complex views.

In the past
Traditionally DC seemed to have led the way when it comes to comics, initially with the success of it’s solitary heroes (Batman, Superman) then hero teams (Justice League of America), then in the 80s dipping their toes in more mature waters (Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, Killing Joke and a final stab in the late 90s with The Authority outside their current universe) somewhere between the late 90s and present day Marvel took the lead reinventing their universe for a maturing audience and becoming relevant to a younger audience that had grown up at a time when we are bombarded with over stimulus from every angle.

Marvel’s reinvention was led by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s 2002 The Ultimates a super hero tale using traditional Marvel characters addressing more mature themes for a savy fan base. Marvel’s film works have moved in the same direction albeit a more bumpy path;

Although Thor was not one of my favourite comics growing up I did read a lot of them and have an attachment to his universe. However there were some aspects of Thor I could never reconcile:

The whole Norse God/Odin/Asgard/Rainbow bridge/magic/realms aspects of Thor carried little weight with me and if anything just interrupted the flow of his earthly adventures and I just ignored those bits of the comics.

I totally bought into an arrogant son being harshly punished by his father and having to live his life as a cripple mortal to learn humility. However there is a caveat to this – my entire childhood I only ever knew Thor as either a warrior hero or as his alter ego Donald Blake a selfless doctor and never as anything less than mighty.

So I could only surmise that his banishment was some sort of misunderstanding or jealousy. Also Thor seemed to be so mighty to me that if he really wanted to I was sure he could make his way back to Asgard or wherever he wanted to go any time.

I also could also not understand why Loki kept on getting away with so much stuff without being destroyed once and for all. As I grew up I understood more about the Comics Code Authority and how there will always be a need to balance out the good and evil in the comic universe. It’s worth noting that Marvel in 2001, the year before The Ultimates hit news stands Marvel withdrew from the Comics Code Authority.

Last year
Also after seeing some very Iron Man’esk footage of Thor at Empire’s Movie-Con III I asked Kevin Feige, Kenneth Branagh & Tom Hiddleston:

“With Iron Man being such a success would that become a template for the further Marvel films or would your [Branagh’s] vision be slightly different, darker, a little less fun with more pathos?”

Day 2 of Kapow! Comic Con came to a close with the screening of Movie: X. There had been much talk of what Movie X might be in the run up and most had bet that is was to be the first screening of Marvel's Thor. After all those in the know where aware that The lead was a cape wearing super hero with a funny sounding name. However when it was revealed that Movie: X had an 18 certificate I though it might be Mark Millar's gritty Scottish super hero film Miracle Park or James Gunn's Super. Only thing was I was pretty sure that the hero from Super didn't wear a cape and that SCI-FI-LONDON Festival were supposed to have the UK premier later this month.

When Millar revealed that he was still busy with Miracle Park and would be shooting this Summer earlier in the day at the Millarworld Panel I was almost sure that Super was going to be Kapow!'s Movie X screening.

I first came across I am Number 4 when a brochure containing an introduction and excerpt from the book was placed in my shopping bag at Waterstones mid last year. After a quick scan I filed it in section along with those big print books I used to occasionally pick up as a teen in book shops that had flashy covers but turned out to be a part of a series of books about teen vampires, star crossed lovers and girls having adventures on their horses. Pffffft! Nouveau kids literature, give me Homer's Iliad, Odyssey, or Willard Price’s Adventure series or Robert Arthur Jr.’s Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators any day. I was sure it had a place just not in my bag.

I was lucky enough to catch a screening of The Green Hornet yesterday and enjoyed it immensely.

KAPOW! Its finally happened. Looks like the UK is getting a fan convention that is going to hit the sweet spot. I am of course talking about Mark Millar's KAPOW! COMIC CON.

Along with the other fan conventions KAPOW! COMIC CON is making the UK the place to be for all things comic and superhero related. In case you are unsure of the awesomeness of Mark Millar he is - the Scottish fan boy that dropped out to chase his dream of being a comic writer and went from standing in line to get Alan Moore's autograph to MAJOR power player via Trident Comics, 2000AD, Fleetway, DC, DC's Wildstorm, Marvel and eventually his own line of comics published under his Millarworld banner. I haven't mentioned that his ascent was oiled by delivering some of the most engaging and generation defining stories of our time at each publisher - or his critical involvment in updating the Marvel Universe to its current more filmable sensibilities. A knack that he has carried over to his own titles like; Kick-Ass, Wanted, the soon to be a major motion picture Nemesis and in development War Heroes.

Millar is also behind CLiNT, a monthly magazine bringing the best existing & new comics talent together. It features hooks like Millar's worth the cover price alone; Kick-Ass 2, Nemesis & American Jesus, Jonathan Ross's 30s based Vampire vs. Super heroes saga Turf, Frankie Boyle's insane Rex Royd, Stewart Lee's The Property and merging it with hilarious un PC columns and articles; this month's issue includes interviews with the likes of David Mitchell, Stewart Lee & Kevin Smith, indepth looks at the ISS Enterprise and a personal favourite Vern's Guide to Badass Cinema; and much more!). Coming across as an international anarchic post meta human generation update on the traditional great British titles like; A Boys Own (not strictly for boys only though), Lion, Action, Hotspur, Tiger, Valiant, 2000AD, Revolver all rolled into one and then blended with Monty Python and The Twilight Zone. If some of the aforementioned titles are unknown to you. How I envy the undiscovered country that lies ahead of you. Issue 4 of CLiNT out now, with issue 5 expected to be unchained any day now and available from all decent magazine resellers.

Batman: Arkham Knight Cape & Cowl Exhibition London

I love the London Film Museum, not only are they the home for props, memorabilia and costumes from some of my favourite films ever (Bond, Excalibur, Aliens, Batman, Superman, Star Wars and currently a Ray Harryhausen Exhibition -

as well as many, many, many more) but some of my best recent film related memories are attributed directly to them (Star Wars Exhibition, celebrating Mr. Ray Harryhausen’s 90th Birthday, Meeting Bond alumni; George Lazenby, Maude Adams & Britt Ekland as well as meeting both Herbert Lom & Burt Kwouk (responsible for some of the funniest moments on the silver screen from my childhood) and, and shooting the breeze with Terry (still not a Sir yet) Gilliam, Sir Peter Jackson and John Landis).

And that’s just the stuff off the top of my head.

Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of superhero: THOR. This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth. Kenneth Branagh directs this fantasy epic which stars Australian actor Chris Hemsworth as the ancient Norse god, Tom Hiddleston as his evil brother Loki, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, a young woman who befriends Thor on Earth, and Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Thor's father and king of Asgard. Expect to see agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., previously seen in ''Iron Man,'' to make an appearance, further forshadowing the coming of The Avengers!

“E! Are reporting from Comic-Con and Brad Pitt’s there now. Who reported from your (London Film and) Comic Con?” My girlfriend asked me a couple of days ago while watching E! She was of course referring to San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) vs. The London Film and Comic Con (LDFCC). My mumbled response somewhat deflating the grand and exotic picture I had excitedly painted of my experience at LFCC the weekend before. “Err!! A couple of bloggers by the look of things”. Naturally this spurrned me on to create this post.

“LFCC takes place every summer (over a weekend) at Earls Court 2 in London. Celebrating the best of film, television, comics and sport, London Film and Comic Con is a day out unlike any other, giving you the chance to meet your idols, ask them questions as well as grabbing the latest film/tv/comic merchandise on the market.”

So on Sunday in between Lovebox days I made my way to the Earls Court conference centre. LFCC London Film and Comic Con was back and better than ever. This year the convention covered a smaller area than the huge space in previous years. But nevertheless was capital. Some astounding guests, loads of comics, film memorabilia, talks, art, sci-fi, super heroes, Cosplay, sneak previews and an exhibition from DC comics.

I missed last year’s convention but this year the draw proved too much.

As with previous years the arena was divided up into different zones; The Signing Zone, Anime Zone, Photo shoot Zone, Artists Alley, Video Game Zone, Talk Area, Cosplay Zone, Dealer Zone.

I arrived at the Earls Court conference centre hoping to breeze in as in previous years but arrived a little earlier than anticipated and had to join the long queue to get in. As with previous years crowd control was conducted by the Empire’s finest ensuring that Trekkie scum were dutifully harassed and that all was kept in order. All the while various characters from across comics, film, Sci-Fi and Manga either queuing up or interacting with the visitors.

Fallen tells the story of a beloved hero Ephraim (Brian Kavanaugh), who has turned his back on the people that he swore to protect. He must contend with the scared population of the city that vows for his return, including a lone police officer (Errol McLendon), a vigilante (Andrew Staton), and a frightened boy (Harrison Boxley).

When a mysterious catastrophe rocks the city of Chicago, the scared citizenry react in various ways that force Ephraim to make a heavy decision.

With the 48 Hour Film making Challenge submissions being judged and only 2 weeks to go until one of the UK’s premiere film & Sci-Fi events: SCI-FI-LONDON kicks off. I’m going to be bringing you news and information about SCI-FI-LONDON in the run up, as well as excitingly from the festival as it happens! I have already reserved some seats and earmarked others for closer investigation.

Still hot from Wondercon Jonathan Ross and Tommy Lee Edwards will be signing the very first issue of Image Comics’ Turf at the Forbidden Planet Megastore.

Needing no introduction, Jonathan Ross is not only a national celebrity but a lifelong comics fan - now making his writing debut with Image Comics and this fantastic five-issue mini-series! Tommy Lee Edwards is a top-drawer illustrator famous for his versatility. His clients have included just about every major film company, and his comics work includes 'Hellboy', 'Batman' and 'Marvel 1985'.

Turf is a hard-boiled noir crime thriller bristling with girls, guns, fangs and aliens. It’s New York, 1929, the height of prohibition. The cops turn a blind eye while the mobs run the city - but the arrival of the Eastern European Dragonmir Family coincides with a series of brutal attacks on the gangsters themselves. As the gangs fall before fangs, an unlikely alliance forms between tough guy Eddie Falco and a character from a LONG way from New York City - a long way from Earth in fact – and offers the humans a glimmer of hope.

The Losers are an elite military unit after being betrayed and left for dead, members of a CIA black ops team root out those who targeted them for assassination.

A tale of double cross and revenge, centered upon the members of an elite U.S. Special Forces unit sent into the Bolivian jungle on a search and destroy mission. The team-Clay, Jensen, Roque, Pooch and Cougar -find themselves the target of a lethal betrayal instigated from inside by a powerful enemy known only as Max. Presumed dead, the group makes plans to even the score when they're joined by the mysterious Aisha, a beautiful operative with her own agenda. Working together, they must remain deep undercover while tracking the heavily-guarded Max, a ruthless man bent on embroiling the world in a new high-tech global war.

Now that Marvel have cast Chris Evans as The First Avenger: Captain America and his sidekick Bucky will be played by Sebastian Stan. We wonder what the two might look like?

Something to consider -will The First Avenger: Captain America be taking place in 2 time periods? We are guessing that two suits will be involved, a Golden Age style suit from the origin part of the tale which will then be updated to contemporary times.

Also could Bucky's Winter Soldier persona play a role in the film? Either way below we have covered some scenarios:

The Establishing Shot: What might Captain America and Bucky look like?

Martin Cambell's Green Lantern is still a little way off with an expected release date of June 2011, this is a month earlier than Marvel hero Captain America is expected to be on the big screen. This will be the closest that heroes from the two different houses will go up against each in the box office stakes.

In the Green Lantern currently being shot in New Orleans, Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) is a test pilot is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe. He will go toe to toe against Sinestro played by Mark Strong.

Amanda "The Wall" Waller. This character pop in and out of the DC universe I wonder if she'll do the same in the DC films in a similar fashion to Marvel's Nick Fury?

Blake Lively as Jordan's love interest and boss Carol Ferris, Peter Sarsgaard as evil genius Hector Hammond, Tim Robbins as Senator Hammond (Hector's father) and Temuera Morrison as the alien Abin Sur thast passes his ring on to Jordan.

Iron Man 2 hits the big screens in the UK on 30 April, 2010

With only a month to go till Iron Man 2 smashes the big screen. I watched Jon Favreau's Zathura: A Space Adventure for the first time and was pleasantly surprised at how good it actually is.

I disliked Jumanji and following the sequels always worse than the first film didn't give it a chance. But Favreau really pulls the story story together to make Zathura one of those rare cases where the sequel is actually better than the first film. I'm hoping for a similar scenario with Favreau's Iron Man sequel. The first Iron Man is going to be hard to beat but if anyone can it's Favreau. With that mind I bring you the trailer for Warren Ellis's Iron Man: Extremis. The Motion Comic will be released on April 16 by Marvel Knights. So it'a aimed at a slightly mature audience.

I'm not obsessing over Iron Man 2 or anything like that :). But over the weekend Paramount released another teaser clip with new bits. Pretty Damn sweet! War Machine rocks! The porto/mobile Iron Man suit looks real good and Black Widow has been undercover in the States so long that she no longer has a Russian accent. What do you think? After the clip is the latest Iron Man 2 poster.

Iron Man 2 is expected to hit the big screens on 30 April, 2010

If like me you have not read Scott Pilgrim vs. the World yet and are now unsure of reading the comic or seeing the film first. The dilemma being a bit like Doc Brown's time paradox: if you read the comic first - will the film will be a known quantity and will have to work harder to keep you entertained and interested? Will the film have to live up to the comic? Will you be disappointed if it fails? But if you see the film first will you miss vital insight into the mythology as well as possible in-jokes?

As with Kick-Ass, of which I had only read the first issue of the series. I have decided to see Scott Pilgrim the film first and then read the comic. This will allow me to enjoy the film unencumbered by preconceived expectations. If you disagree do let me know.

With that in mind I found The Gamervision breakdown below really handy; it gives a 101 on Scott Pilgrim, some comparisons between the Comic & the trailer and unfortunatley some possible spoilers.
