Sadly we missed Salute which looks like a powerful documentary based on an event from history that I was not aware of - the infamous human rights Black Power Salute at the 1968 Mexico Olympics and how this major event in Olympic history had a major global impact not only on human rights and racial equality at all subsequent Olympics but for human rights on a global scale.

Last night we attended the very swish launch for the Virgin Media Shorts film competition at Sketch and whilst wildly impressed with the venue, it came in second to the great company and people I met last night including Jason Wingard last year's Virgin Media Shorts Grand Prize with his short 2:20 which you can see below. We should have a write up of last night's launch  up soon.

MARVEL AVENGERS ASSEMBLE TAKES A MASSIVE £2.5M AT THE UK BOX OFFICE ON OPENING DAY SELL OUT PERFORMANCES LEADS TO ADDITIONAL SCREENINGS BEING ADDED TO KEEP UP WITH DEMAND
Marvel Avengers Assemble has taken an incredible £2.5 million at the UK box office on its opening day. Fans flocked to see the hugely anticipated superhero movie making it the 3rd biggest Thursday opening of all time.  The huge demand across the country to see the film has also led to additional screenings being put on to keep up with demand.

1) STAR WARS III: REVENGE OF THE SITH - May 19th 2005: £3,509,547.
2) HARRY POTTER AND ORDER OF THE PHOENIX - July 12th 2007: £3,486,348.

Marvel Avengers Assemble has also seen record-breaking openings across Europe and Australia saw their second highest opening of all-time, behind only Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.


Marvel Avengers Assemble is the eagerly anticipated first Avengers film, bringing together some of Marvel’s most loved superhero characters in the biggest superhero movie in history. In the first deal of its kind, the San Jose, California based Winchester Mystery House considered the “world’s most haunted house” is authorizing Hammer, an Exclusive Media company, the use of its unique property for a feature film based on its legendary story.   Hammer has optioned all rights to develop and produce the feature film with Imagination Design Works (IDW) and Nine/8 Entertainment, it was announced today by Simon Oakes, Vice-Chairman of Exclusive Media and President & CEO of Hammer, and Guy East and Nigel Sinclair, Co-Chairmen of Exclusive Media.

Production on the supernatural horror film currently in development will be overseen by Exclusive Media’s Tobin Armbrust, President of Worldwide Production and Acquisitions, and Shira Rockowitz, Director of Development and Production.  Brett Tomberlin and Antonia Lianos will produce for Imagination Design Works, Inc along with Andrew Trapani and Brian Gilbert for Nine/8 Entertainment.

“The Winchester House has a rich and compelling history.  The story behind how it was built has attracted a great deal of attention over the years and we are excited to bring that mythology to film,” said Tobin Armbrust.  “We are also thrilled, and terrified, that the House has allowed us to film on the premises”.

"We are extremely excited to be partnering with Exclusive Media to bring the story of the Winchester Mystery House to a global audience.  For many years, the mystique and history of this unique venue, and its owner Sarah Winchester, could be experienced only by those visiting the site.  Now, with a film shot in and around the House, Sarah's spirit will be brought back to life, and the audience will see first-hand this stunning and bizarre house," said Brett Tomberlin, President, Imagination Design Works.

The Winchester Mystery House has a startling history and attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists annually. Popular belief holds that Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester Rifle fortune, was convinced she was haunted by the spirits of those killed by “the gun that won the west.”  Following a Medium’s advice, Sarah built a massive house in Northern California to appease the spirits.  For the next 38 years, she never stopped building believing that if she continued, she would live forever, and if she stopped, she would die.  Known as the “house built for the spirits,” there have been many inexplicable ghost sightings and to this day, visitors share their terrifying stories of having been in the presence of these departed souls who continue to roam the grounds of the intricate and enigmatic house.

Imagination Design Works, Inc. organizes the famous “Fright Nights,” a special ticketed event held at the Winchester Mystery House during the month of October, providing a true Halloween experience to visitors.

Andrew Trapani of Nine/8 Entertainment previously produced THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT for Lionsgate.  Released in Spring 2009 and starring Oscar Nominee Virginia Madsen, HAUNTING opened as the #2 film in the U.S., generating over $23M at the box office in its opening weekend of release and is now amongst the top grossing films in Lionsgate history.  Trapani also recently produced THE CHOSEN ONE, an animated film for the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers.

Upcoming projects include executive producing the TV series, “Wallace,” based on the life of Scotsman William Wallace, created and written by Mick Davis, the original supernatural thriller CANDLE, and a biopic about famed auto-maker John DeLorean. Trapani began his entertainment career as a video game designer and producer for Crystal Dynamics, Inc where he oversaw the development and production of some of the first Sony Playstation games.

Brian Gilbert most recently produced Warner Bros. Premiere/Cartoon Network’s “Scooby Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster” and “Scooby Doo! The Mystery Begins.” His past film credits include the horror film WRONG TURN starring Desmond Harrington, Eliza Dushku and Jeremy Sisto released by 20th Century Fox and nominated for Best Film at the Sitges Catalonian International Film Festival, as well as THE DEATHS OF IAN STONE starring Mike Vogel, Jaime Murray and Christina Cole released by After Dark Films.  Gilbert is also executive producer alongside Trapini on “Wallace” and produced as well as directed THE CHOSEN ONE.

ERIC BANA, REBECCA HALL BEGIN PRODUCTION NEXT WEEK ON JOHN CROWLEY-DIRECTED INTERNATIONAL SUSPENSE THRILLER; SUPPORTING CAST, CREW SET FOR U.K. SHOOT
 Production begins next week in the U.K. on Focus Features and Working Title Films’ untitled international suspense thriller starring Eric Bana (of Focus’ Hanna) and Golden Globe Award nominee Rebecca Hall (Vicky Cristina Barcelona, The Town) for director John Crowley (Boy A). The original screenplay is by Steven Knight, Academy Award nominee for Dirty Pretty Things and BIFA Award nominee for Focus’ Eastern Promises.

Rounding out the cast are British Independent Film Award nominee Riz Ahmed (Four Lions); Academy Award winner Jim Broadbent (Iris); Olivier Award nominee Kenneth Cranham (An Inspector Calls); BAFTA Award nominee Anne-Marie Duff (Nowhere Boy); in his fifth film for Focus, Ciarán Hinds (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy); and Golden Globe and Emmy Award nominee Julia Stiles (Dexter). Adriano Goldman (Focus’ Jane Eyre) is the feature’s cinematographer; Jim Clay and Natalie Ward, both of Focus’ The Debt, are the production designer and costume designer, respectively.

Mr. Bevan and Mr. Fellner are producing the film with Chris Clark (The Guard), and Working Title’s Liza Chasin is executive producer. Focus holds worldwide rights to the feature, and will commence overseas sales at the Cannes International Film Festival in May.

In the thriller, two ex-lovers, Martin (to be played by Mr. Bana) and Claudia (Ms. Hall), find their loyalties tested and their lives at risk when they are joined together on the defense team in a terrorism trial.

CUBAN FURY marks James Griffiths’ feature film directorial debut with TV credits including Up All Night and Free Agents. Produced by Nira Park and James Biddle of Big Talk, working from an original idea by Nick Frost, the screenwriter is Jon Brown, whose hit TV writing credits include series such as Miranda, Misfits and Fresh Meat. Brown also won the BAFTA for Break-Through Talent in 2011. Executive Producers are Nick Frost, Matthew Justice and Rachael Prior (Big Talk), Danny Perkins and Jenny Borgars (STUDIOCANAL) and Tessa Ross (Film4).

Nick Frost comments “My aim with Cuban Fury was to make a romantic comedy with fiery Salsa at its heart. I wanted to show people that sometimes it's not about a perfect nose and abs of steel, sometimes passion, soul and fire is enough. And in case you're wondering yes, I'll do all my own dancing.”

Nira Park adds “For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to make a dance movie. Even better a comedy dance movie. So when I received an email from Nick Frost which read: "how would you feel if I said we should do a film where I DANCE A LOT. Imagine me in tightly fitted sequinned garments with a lot of slow-mo", I said: "I want the poster for that movie on my wall now!" Nick's idea for Cuban Fury was fantastic, and finding newcomer Jon Brown to collaborate with him and write the script was the first step - Jon just has that knack for funny that is completely innate. Being able to bring James Griffiths on to direct was the final piece of the jigsaw. We had a fantastic time making our TV show Free Agents together, and had been looking for the right movie project to collaborate on for a long time. I can't wait to see Nick in a role that will showcase all of his incredible talents as a performer, even those that have remained more hidden up to this point! And I feel incredibly lucky that we have managed to persuade the unbelievably gifted Rashida Jones, Chris O'Dowd and Olivia Colman to join us for the ride.”

1987: A 13 year old natural born dancer with fire in his heels and snakes in his hips is working himself up to explode all over the UK Junior Salsa Championships. But then… a freakish bullying incident on the mean streets of London robs him of his confidence, and our young hero finds his life diverted down a very different path.

So it is that 22 years later, an adult Bruce Garrett (Nick Frost) finds himself out-of-shape and unloved - trapped in a downward spiral of self-pity, repression and Nando’s take-outs. Only Julia (Rashida Jones), his smart, funny, gorgeous new American boss, gives him reason to live. But she’s untouchable. Out of his league, so he imagines, with her perfect smile and perfect life.  Unknown to Bruce however, Julia has issues all of her own. Luckily for him, she also has a secret passion…

Then there’s Drew (Chris O’Dowd), his alpha male colleague and horny king-monkey of the office. With Drew making no secret of his desire to get (his words) “all up inside Julia”, Bruce is forced into action…

And thus, Bruce is once again brought face-to-face with the darkest and most powerful of his inner demons. Somehow, someway, and with a lot of handholding from loyal sister Sam (Olivia Colman) Bruce must learn how to unshackle his dancing beast, regain his long lost fury and claim the love of his life...and he’s going to do it all On The Dance Floor...

Marvel Studios delivers the ultimate comic-book film, which ties together such characters as Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) for a big-screen franchise team-up like no other. Taking center stage this time is Nick Fury (played once again by the note-perfect Samuel L. Jackson), leader of the peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Fury, along with former Russian spy Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), recruits a super team to combat Thor's ever-deceptive brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) after he brainwashes ace archer Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) while stealing a cosmic cube from an underground base. Thus the heroes must learn to work together alongside outlaw scientist Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), who can track down the artifact's gamma signals when he's not hulking out into a giant green monster. Show runner Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly) adapted and helmed the script by Zak Penn.

UK FILM DISTRIBUTORS UNVEIL ADVENTURE AND HUMOUR AT THE HEART OF THE EXHILARATING LINE-UP IN CINEMAS FOR SUMMER 2012
More than 160 new releases set for summer 2012, including the latest event films from Tim Burton, Ridley Scott, Christopher Nolan, Ken Loach, Scott Hicks, Todd Solondz, Wes Anderson and others

UK box-office currently running 4% ahead of 2011; passes £300m in year to date in record time. Film distributors today unveiled the line-up for UK cinema audiences in summer 2012. More than 160 titles will be released in the four-month season from May to August, during which time the trade body, Film Distributors’ Association (FDA), anticipates approximately 60 million cinema visits, equivalent to one visit per person in the UK population.


Lord (David) Puttnam CBE, FDA President, said:  “We in Britain are heading into what promises to be a truly exceptional summer, during which the power of media and spectacle to bring people together will never have been more apparent. Among the diverse highlights of the summer of cinema 2012 are:

Composer Michael Convertino has been nominated for the 2012 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards. In the category of Best Score, Convertino’s soundtrack from the horror film “Wake Wood” (2011) is one of the six nominees. Deadline for ballots is April 25. E.T. BIKE RIDE VOTED TOP UNIVERSAL PICTURES MOMENT OF PAST 100 YEARS
London, 30th April, 2012 - The moment that Elliott cycles past the moonlight in the 1982 classic family film E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial has been named Universal's most memorable movie moment of the past 100 years by UK film fans.

As the studio celebrates its 100th Anniversary on 30th April 2012, a poll of over 1,000 Brits reveals that the scene from E.T. set to John Williams' famous score is the most cherished moment in its history (19.5%), followed by Roy Scheider delivering the famous line 'You're gonna need a bigger boat' in the 1975 classic Jaws (10.9%).  To mark the centennial, a range of 15 titles including Mamma Mia! The Movie, The Birds, Jurassic Park and Gladiator have been released on DVD & Blu-ray featuring interactive Augmented Reality packaging.

The third most memorable moment according to fans was in the final scene in the 1985 hit film Back To The Future when Doc Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd, helps Marty McFly get his time travelling DeLoreon home with the help of a clock tower and a bolt of lightning (7.6%).

Other scenes in the top ten include Russell Crowe's declaration 'My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius.' in Gladiator (fourth with 6.7%) and Meryl Streep in fifth place leading the ladies to the tune of Abba's Dancing Queen in Mamma Mia! The Movie (6.4%).

The list of the most loved Universal characters is led by Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly from Back To The Future with 9.3%, followed by action man Jason Bourne, played by Matt Damon (6.7%) in the Bourne Trilogy films.  E.T. the alien took third place honours with 6.6% and Renée Zellweger's '30-something singleton' Bridget Jones, the only female character in the top ten, was fourth with 5.8%.

Funnyman Simon Pegg's Shaun from Shaun of the Dead was named the fifth most loved Universal character (5.6%) - beating the likes of Liam Neeson's Oskar Schindler (Schindler's List) and Jeff Bridges' 'Dude' from The Big Lebowski amongst others.

Screenwriter Jon Crocker (Desert Dancer) is now developing the screenplay for the next instalment in the series, The Woman in Black: Angels Of Death, based on an original story by Hill, under development for the past few years and now complete.

The Woman in Black was set in the early 1900’s and based on the tale of a young lawyer who is ordered to travel to a remote corner of the UK, to sort out the papers of a recently deceased client. In the eerie setting of Eel Marsh House he discovers the vengeful ghost of The Woman in Black.  This next instalment, The Woman in Black: Angels Of Death, will continue this story four decades later and focus on the concept of a couple and the experience they have when they encounter the haunted setting of Eel Marsh House.

The Woman in Black: Angels Of Death will be brought to the big screen by the same production team behind The Woman In Black. The Film will be produced by Exclusive Media, Talisman, Cross Creek Pictures and Alliance Films, in addition to Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, who will serve as Executive Producer.

Simon Oakes, Vice-Chairman of Exclusive Media and President & CEO of Hammer and Guy East and Nigel Sinclair, Co-Chairmen of Exclusive Media, Hammer’s parent company, announced today that Jared Harris has signed on to star as Professor Joseph Coupland in THE QUIET ONES.

THE QUIET ONES is a supernatural thriller/horror to be directed by John Pogue (QUARANTINE 2) which James Gay-Rees (SENNA, EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP) will produce in association with TPSC Films. With the story and original screenplay by Tom DeVille, revisions by Craig Rosenberg, Oren Moverman and most recently John Pogue, the film is currently in pre-production and will start shooting in June 2012 in the UK.

Inspired by true events, THE QUIET ONES tells the story of an unorthodox, but charismatic professor who uses controversial methods and leads his best students off the grid to take part in a dangerous experiment:  to create a poltergeist from negative human energy.

THE QUIET ONES marks Hammer’s next production after the worldwide box office hit, THE WOMAN IN BLACK, starring Daniel Radcliffe, which has taken over $120 million at the box-office worldwide to date.

Jared Harris recently starred IN SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS and hit TV series Mad Men. He will next be seen in Steven Spielberg’s LINCOLN, currently in post-production.

Alex Walton, President of International Sales and Distribution, is handling international sales. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honoured actress Scarlett Johansson with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. in front of Madame Tussauds Hollywood.

The actress plays Black Widow in the UK number 1 box office smash MARVEL AVENGERS ASSEMBLE, which took a massive £15.7M in it's opening weekend at the UK box office, and continues to take over £1million per day.

This is the biggest Disney 3 day opening of all time and the biggest superhero movie opening of all time

PECCADILLO PICTURES BLAZES TRAIL WITH FIRST-TIME FEATURE FILMS BY FEMALE FILMMAKERS WITH TRIO OF NEW ACQUISITIONS: CIRCUMSTANCE, ROMEOS and THREE VEILS
UK based independent film distributor Peccadillo Pictures have acquired Iranian-American Maryam Keshavarz’s Sundance award-winning feature film CIRCUMSTANCE from French sales outfit Funny Balloons, for a July theatrical bow following a premiere at the distributor’s own POUT film festival in June.

Set in contemporary Iran in the unseen world of Iranian youth culture, CIRCUMSTANCE is the story of two vivacious young girls discovering their burgeoning sexuality, struggling with their desires and the boundaries placed upon them by the world they were born into.

CIRCUMSTANCE follows Peccadillo’s recent trend of releasing diverse feature films from female film-makers, with Alix Delaporte’s debut ANGEL & TONY currently on release, and Lisa Aschan’s multi award-winning SHE MONKEYS due in UK cinemas next Friday.

Other recent acquisitions by Peccadillo from female directors include Sabine Bernardi’s alternative teen romancer ROMEOS, Rolla Selbak’s Arab-American triptych THREE VEILS and Tara Johns’ Canadian road movie THE YEAR DOLLY PARTON WAS MY MOM.

THE ESTABLISHING SHOT SUPER HERO NEWS:
Marvel’s Avengers Assemble continues to dominate the international box office. The film opened with previews in the US last night, with cinema-goers queuing around the block, for a chance to be the first to see this summer’s most anticipated film.

The film has already smashed the UK box office with a phenomenal Hulk sized four day weekend of £15.8m and is still reigning at the top of the box office charts.  Avengers Assemble had the biggest opening for a superhero movie in the UK of all time and the second biggest 4 day weekend ever (behind Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix £16.5m).

With UK audiences still flocking to see the superhero spectacle, Avengers Assemble has already taken more than the entire UK box office runs of Iron Man (£17.4m), Iron Man 2 (£21.2m),The Hulk (£8.29m), Captain America (£9.5m) and Thor (£14.05m).

The international box office totalled a massive $281.1 million over the last 8 days in 41 countries, with many countries seeing their biggest opening weekends of all time, including Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Central America, Bolivia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, New Zealand and The Philippines.
