The Establishing Shot: 48 hour Filmhack Challenge kicked off last week - Filmmaking Competition

saatchi filmhackM&C Saatchi have partnered with Goldsmiths and YouTube to launch the 48 hour Filmhack Challenge which kicked off last week and saw 6 teams attempting to make a short film over two days. The teams were made up of students and filmmakers of the future from the Goldsmiths MA Filmmaking and MA Screen Documentary courses and M&C Saatchi employees from across the Group.

Following the recent success of the Game5hack initiative, M&C Saatchi is looking to up the creativity ante yet again with an innovative partnership with Goldsmiths, University of London and YouTube. Filmhack is a 48 hour film challenge which will see 6 teams make a short film across two days.

All films will be shot across London in a ‘Dogme style’ using top of the range Motorola handsets. The theme for the films is broadly ‘How People Connect’ with each team picking a genre for their film and a prescribed start and end point. The start and end points will be linked to provide a continuity thread that will allow them to be viewed sequentially to tell a bigger story…think Short Cuts meets Life in a Day’.

Lisa Thomas, CEO of M&C Saatchi said: “We are really excited to be hosting Filmhack, the latest in our creative Hack sessions. We have a wealth of creative skillsets in the building, including film promotion expertise. This expertise, coupled with the fresh and talented film-makers of the future from Goldsmiths, as well as the mentoring from some of the best creative minds in the creative industries, is a powerful blend, and is guaranteed to produce some excellent films. Working with YouTube ensures those films will have an audience and allows our teams to flex their promotional muscles.”
Robert Smith, Convenor of MA Filmmaking at Goldsmiths, University of London said: “The skill of collaboration is vital to success in any filmmaking process and this innovative task will help our students further develop those skills. Technological advances have revolutionised the way in which film content is being used and made, so this is a brilliant opportunity for our students to be working with professionals from industry leaders such as M&C Saatchi, Google and YouTube.”

Teams will be made up of M&C Saatchi employees from across the Group, students and filmmakers of the future, from the Goldsmiths MA Filmmaking and MA Screen Documentary courses, as well as actors from the Drama and Theatre Arts course. Each team will have a fair distribution of creative, technical and acting skillsets.

A panel of judges will select a an all-round ‘best in show’ winner at the end of the 48 hour challenge, followed by a public screening at M&C Saatchi, Golden Square.

However, the challenge doesn’t stop with the completion of the films. A final prize will be awarded to the team that most effectively distributes and promotes their film online, using a combination of free YouTube pre-rolls, social channels and shameless blagging, borrowing and self- promotion to drive views, shares and general internet love. Both top prizes of £1000 each will be announced together on the 20th July at Google HQ.
Hamish Nicklin, Head of Creative Agency Partnerships for Google UK, said, "We are really excited to be working with M&C Saatchi and Goldsmiths on this project. We believe it will bring the best of YouTube to the creative community, both agencies and students alike. It will show how YouTube can be used as a story telling platform to craft and distribute original and engaging content."

The judging panel includes:

•         Lisa Thomas - CEO M&C Saatchi
•         Elspeth Lynne - ECD M&C Saatchi
•         Chris Quigly/Will Cooke – Founders Viral Ad Network/Rubber Republic
•         Robert Smith – Convenor of MA Filmmaking at Goldsmiths
•         Alex Stoltz, Distribution and Exhibition at the BFI (British Film Institute)

Filmhack will take place on the 28th and 29th June, with a screening of all 6 completed films at 5pm on the Friday 29th at M&C Saatchi, Golden Square.

Judges will select an all-round ‘best in show’ winner Friday evening and a second prize will be awarded to the team that most effectively distributes and promotes their film online, using a combination of free YouTube pre-rolls, social channels and shameless blagging, borrowing and self- promotion to drive views, shares and general internet love. Both top prizes of £1000 each will be announced together on the 20th July at Google HQ.
