Visiting the Highlander New York Library at The National Liberal Club London - FILM LOCATION

Visiting the Highlander New York Library at The National Liberal Club London  - FILM LOCATION

I am a huge fan of Russell Mulcahy’s body of work with a particular focus on his visual styling exemplified in his second feature the genre-bending 1986 sword & sorcery film Highlander. Like many of my favourite films, Highlander feels fresh and original whilst seeming intuitively familiar.

Regrettably, I have not posted nearly enough about the stuff I enjoy and with Studiocanal’s forthcoming 4K UHD remaster release of Highlander it seems a good time to pick up the mantle and continue.

I visit the Location of James Bond’s No Time To Die Villa – Field Report

The first law for a secret agent is to get his geography right...
     – Ian Fleming - The Man with the Golden Gun, 1965

This week marks the 60th anniversary of the start of Principal shooting on Dr No at Palisades Airport in Kingston, Jamaica, on 16 January 1962.

After my plans for an epic 2020 European related Bond adventure were delayed, I was stoked that some of my late 2021 plans were able to go ahead and I shot into Jamaica, the spiritual home of James Bond and more pointedly the home-away-from-home for Bond creator Ian Fleming. Jamaica is after all where Fleming wrote all of his published James Bond thrillers as well as presumably his originally unpublished Bond TV series treatments; some of which were reworked into his For Your Eyes Only collection of short stories, another 2 have subsequently made their way into Anthony Horowitz's Bond novels and apparently another 3 exist.

Jamaica is referenced across Fleming’s Bond book series and five Bond stories had events taking place in Jamaica. The film versions of Dr No (1962) and Live and Let Die (1973) featured Bond in Jamaica as well as of course most recently Cary Fukunaga’s No Time To Die (2021).

He had arrived at Royale-les-Eaux in time for luncheon two days before. There had been no attempt to contact him and there had been no flicker of curiosity when he had signed the register 'James Bond, Port Maria, Jamaica'.

M had expressed no interest in his cover.

'Once you start to make a set at Le Chiffre at the tables, you'll have had it,' he said. 'But wear a cover that will stick with the general public.'

Bond knew Jamaica well, so he asked to be controlled from there and to pass as a Jamaican plantocrat whose father had made his pile in tobacco and sugar and whose son chose to play it away on the stock markets and in casinos.
     – Ian Fleming Casino Royale, 1953

With this preamble and some time to kill, I managed to visit some Jamaican locations with connections to Ian Fleming and Bond. These places included the “secret” location of James Bond's retirement home as featured in No Time To Die also sometimes referred to as – the James Bond Villa.

Spotlight on 4 anticipated films shot in Malta Assassin's Creed, The Lake, The Mercy & The Promise - VISIT MALTA

Visit Malta Film LocationsRecently I received an email about the gorgeous and stately island nation of Malta being the location of choice for many major upcoming releases - now usually I would have skipped over this email but a couple of things piqued my interest enough to post about it.

Malta has been on our visit list for awhile, particularly as we constantly get updates about how great the diving on the Maltese Archipelago is. It's place in history merits a visit for anyone interested in European culture and it looks absolutely gorgeous with azure blue seas, natural beauty, old world charm and architecture as well as all the modern comforts. All of which would compliment any holiday rather well.

So much so that earlier this year we had planned to visit Malta, as we were swept away by the elegant quaintness of the hotel and locations beautifully shot, by Cinematographer Christian Berger for Angelina Jolie's By The Sea.

In the film Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt couple, Vanessa and Roland are seeking sanctuary in the South of France during the 70s.

I visit George Lucas' Star Wars: Visions Exhibition in Tokyo

Star Wars: Visions Exhibition Report
Star Wars: Visions Exhibition Report

I have been quietly anticipating the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. To that end I have been avoiding the marketing and hype as much as I can - a couple of evenings ago I saw a snippet of Daisy Ridley and John Boyega chatting on the news and thought I would finish this piece on my visit to George Lucas' Star Wars: Visions Exhibition in Tokyo.

Earlier this year I was fortunate to fulfil a lifelong dream and visit a land far, far away. And I have to say - Japan, the land of the rising sun, far exceeded my expectations on every level. I hasten to add that whilst Japan might be famed for its rising sun, its sunsets are absolutely spectacular. While I didn't manage to team up with a travelling troupe of Ninjas and defend beleaguered farmers against an out of control warlord's hordes or find a Hattori Hanzō sword (or even an ancient Masamune Katana folded 200 times) I did however manage to wander the land, meet people... get into adventures and stuff.

When planning my Japan itinerary I was stoked to see that an exhibition dedicated to Star Wars called Star Wars: Visions would take place in Tokyo while I was there. This was fortuitous as a little while back I had made tentative plans to visit the Star Wars: Identities Exhibition in Paris, my plans fell through and the exhibition moved on to its next international destination. London doesn't seem to be getting any Star Wars Exhibition love of late, in comparison to The London Film Museum's exceptional 2007 Star Wars: The Exhibition at least, so Star Wars: Visions was something I was keen to visit. However, my itinerary was fairly loose to say the least, as I intended to do a lot of travelling around Japan and as much as I intended to “plan the dive then dive the plan. I had no idea where I would end up from one day to the next or how long I might be there. If I may digress? My experience is that when it comes to travel you can plan for your expectations but if you can be flexible - some of the best experiences are the unexpected ones and you never know what new adventure or taste lies around the corner in wait. So there was a good chance I might not see the exhibition but it was on my radar.

Restored version of René Clément's classic Plein Soleil brings life back to the best Ripley tale – Plein Soleil DVD Review

Plein Soleil ReviewBy my count there have 5 interpretations of  Tom Ripley on screen. John Malkovich in Ripley's Game, Matt Damon in The Talented Mr. Ripley, Dennis Hopper in The American Friend, Barry Pepper in Ripley Under Ground and of course - still - the greatest Ripley of them all - Alain Delon in Plein Soleil.

There is definitely something to be said for Patricia Highsmith's literary character Tom Ripley, a character that has fascinated the public enough to give birth to 5 successful novels, attracted the immense talent mentioned above, as well as top tier Directors like; Wim Wenders, Anthony Minghella, Liliana Cavani, Roger Spottiswoode and of course René Clément for the original cinematic adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr. Ripley his 1960 Plein Soleil. Thankfully Studiocanal have restored this classic to its original condition and are re-releasing it into both 4K & 2K cinemas as well as Blu-ray and DVD.

Kick-Ass Film Location - Hit-Girl attacks the lobby of Frank D'Amico's penthouse - FILM LOCATION

The Establishing Shot says visit the Kick-Ass film location of the lobby of Frank D'Amico's penthouseThe eagerly anticipated Jeff Wadlow adaptation of Mark Millar's Kick-Ass 2 will be in cinemas this week on 14 August so it seems timely that we take a look at one of the very easy to visit locations from Matthew Vaughn's 2010 Kick-Ass.

Back in 2010 the comic hero to film landscape was dominated by large scale big budget films then along came Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass made for £19 Mill, considerably less than your average blockbuster and raking in triple that at £62 Mill. Ensuring that in all likelihood we would see more of Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) adventures as the costumed vigilante Kick-Ass. What did Hollywood learn from this financial case study ?

But there was no way a “super” hero film based on a Mark Millar comic adapted by Jane Goldman and directed by Matthew Vaughn would not to be seared into our shared collective/cultural consciousness.

Kick-Ass 2 like Kick-Ass was filmed in both the UK and Canada, with Toronto filling in for Kick Ass's New York City skyline and the bulk of the film shot against Blue screen at Pinewood Studios and some scenes at Elstree Studios, Borehamwood.

The Servant James Fox's Tony Townhouse - FILM LOCATION

The Servant James Fox's Tony Townhouse - FILM LOCATION
The Servant James Fox's Tony Townhouse - FILM LOCATION

Joseph Losey's 1963 dark and ambiguous psychological drama The Servant is to be released onto DVD and Blu-ray Monday 8 April, so I thought it was high time to create a post about one of the iconic film locations of the 60s - the house at the centre of the power struggle between James Fox's upperclassman Tony and Dirk Bogarde's The Servant. Some thoughts on the 50th Anniversary restored re-release of The Servant can be found here!

The creative partnership between Director Joseph Losey and writer Harold Pinter heralded in a new era of  British Art Cinema and it started with their first collaboration  The Servant.

The story of The Servant is delivered through a taut battle of wills and seduction between two men on either side of the class barrier. Most of the film is set in Aristocrat Tony's (James Fox) Townhouse which becomes a metaphor for the mental state of Tony as he slowly spirals downward, the field of battle between the wills of the men as well as the prize of victory for the winner. Granted it is a very one-sided battle that will leave one of the men in a state of disorder.

Looking at the Townhouse that served for the location you would never guess the depth of the cinematic battle that place beyond its facade.

Uncle Monty's London home from Withnail and I - FILM LOCATION

Uncle Monty's London home from Withnail and I - FILM LOCATION Goodbye Uncle Monty. Montague H. Withnail or as he is more well known as Uncle Monty's London pad is about 5 minutes from where I live and I pass nearby regularly, if not daily. The exact film location is on a long list of posts that I have brewing but something always seems to get in the way of posting about it - however its timing now makes a fitting goodbye to Uncle Monty or rather the man who brought him to life so wonderfully - Richard Griffiths OBE.

Of course, one role does not make or tell the story of the man who brought almost a 100 memorable and colourful characters to life in cinema, on TV as well as on stage. Despite an illustrious career spanning 5 decades and participation in productions like; Milos Forman's Ragtime, The French Lieutenant's Woman, Hugh Hudson's Chariots of Fire, Superman II, Gandhi,The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear, Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Martin Scorsese's Hugo, the role that brought him to a new generation as Uncle Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter series and seeing him recently on stage with Danny Devito in The Sunshine Boys.

James Bond Quantum of Solace MI6 Science Department Location The Barbican – FILM LOCATION

Quantum Of Solace Location London Barbican Frobisher CrescentIf you read The Establishing Shot you will know that a couple of weeks ago I visited the Designing 007 -Fifty Years Of Bond Style exhibition at the Barbican Centre. Well there would be few places in London that could be a better home to this great little exhibit than The Barbican. As not only is The Barbican one of the world's leading arts centres but after art imitating life and during the Pierce Brosnan era when James Bond’s MI6 was located on the Thames in Vauxhall, however in 2008’s Quantum Of Solace in line with the reinvigorated Bond returning to his darker, colder war roots MI6 was seemingly relocated to the more appropriate and iconic brutalist stylings of The Barbican Estate before being relocated back to Vauxhall for Skyfall.

After James Bond (Daniel Craig) is pulled into a meeting with Edmund Slate (Neil Jackson) in Port au Prince, Haiti (shot in Colon, Panama) he follows Camille Montes (Olga Kurylenko) to a dock land area. While on his recently acquired motorcycle we cut to M (Judi Dench) & Bill Tanner (Rory Kinnear) outside MI6 in London who trace James Bond and call him in Port au Prince.

BOND 23 SKYFALL Filming on Hankley Common, Surrey

By now everyone know that Skyfall has constructed a large building on MOD land on Hankley Common near Elstead in Surrey. The structure is rumoured to be a Monastery and that today helicopters were seen buzzing the area.

Well fortunately The Establishing Shot’s Surrey Field Agent Tim Page was quick on his feet and was able to do a thorough reconnaissance of the Skyfall location. Tim also got some cracking pictures and video (further below) of the on set action. Tim's photos show a Skyfall helicopter possibly commandeered by Captain Marc Wolff filming a military helicopter with some strange emblems above the Manor House/Monastery.

This afternoon they were rehearsing a helicopter sequence. There was a large military chopper which circled the manor house with a second helicopter with a camera on the front practising some shots, there was also some gunfire.

#Update - Our analysis of the Skyfall teaser trailer can be found here: http://www.theestablishingshot.com/2012/05/establishing-shot-skyfall-teaser.html

The place was quite busy with lots of security and Skyfall crew. I managed to chat with one of the locals who told me in confidence when filming will take place. There was also talk of the Aston Martin DB5 arriving at some point, to coincide with Bond arriving at the Manor. Ben Collins aka The Stig may be driving.

There are now 3 sets - the Manor house which looks like its almost finished, a chapel which was only a shell last weekend, and a stone entrance gateway to the Manor.

The Establishing Shot: Behind the scenes on Bond 23 Skyfall Vauxhall Bridge Set Visit Photos and video

SkyfallYesterday, Skyfall headed to Vauxhall Bridge to shoot its 166th shoot. The shoot on on Vauxhall bridge was considerably more exciting than my previous visit to a Skyfall set that consisted of an underground bunker converted to a spartan and functional office space for shoot: 6.

Sam Mendes and his team were filming M (Dame Judi Dench) Head of MI6 and her Chief of Staff and trusted aide Bill Tanner (Rory Kinnear) being speedily chauffeured across Vauxhall Bridge in their Jaguar XJ L in the direction of MI6 itself.

The Establishing Shot: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy The Circus Blythe House Film Location

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy LocationLast night Tomas Alfredson's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy won the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film and Bridget O'Connor & Peter Straughan won the BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay as well as Mr John Hurt or Control won an Outstanding Contribution to British Cinema BAFTA.

To commemorate this occasion - this week I bring you a closer look at Tomas Alfredson's version of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy 's The Circus.

In John le Carré's books The Circus overlooked New Compton Street and Charing Cross Road and believed to be based at 90 Charing Cross Road overlooking Cambridge Circus from whence its name came from The Circus. Although the description is more well suited to the Palladium Theatre across the road with it's salt and pepper pot look outs.

For Tomas Alfredson's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy an altogether different location was chosen for The Circus as it was relocated to West Kensington a more discrete location for the shadowy SIS offices.

Whilst all the interior shots for The Circus were done on a set in former army barracks in Mill Hill, North London the exterior of The Circus is Blythe House in Kensington Olympia, West London. You can read more about how the team went about designing The Circus here: http://www.theestablishingshot.com/2012/01/establishing-shot-tinker-tailor.html

Blythe House is the former headquarters of the Post Office Savings Bank and now used by The Science Museum to store a large part of their collections.

James Bond Thunderball Villain Emilio Largo’s Palmyra Estate Film Location - VISIT BAHAMAS

James Bond Thunderball Villain Emilio Largo’s Palmyra Estate Film Location - VISIT BAHAMAS
James Bond Thunderball Villain Emilio Largo’s Palmyra Estate Film Location - VISIT BAHAMAS

James Bond's 50th Anniversary is turning out to be as big as 2008 was in commemorating Ian Fleming's Centenary year. 2012 sees the production and release of Bond 23 Skyfall, the release of the Bond 50 Blu-ray box set that includes all 22 films as well as the launch of the BOND IN MOTION exhibition at Beaulieu National Motor Museum celebrating 50 years and 50 vehicles of James Bond.

Update: Of course, the BOND IN MOTION exhibition now has a home of its own at the London Film Museum in Covent Garden. Sadly the BOND IN MOTION Exhibition is closed for now.

To commemorate 50 years of Bond rather than present some modern media from Skyfalwhich is currently filming in London; using an unprecedented number of local locations. I thought I would go retro and highlight a location that would please true Bond aficionados. So here is a location used in a classic James Bond film and one of my favourites - Thunderball.

A couple of years ago I jetted off to the Bahamas to visit locations used in James Bond films and my enthusiasm for watersports get married.

As well as staying in two Bond hotels (One & Only Resort from Casino Royale and the British Colonial Hilton from Thunderball & Never Say Never Again - unfortunately not in their Bond suite), diving both the local Bond undersea wrecks with Stuart Cove (the outfit that taught Sean Connery to dive) and visiting many Bond film locations across the Bahamas.

We were fortunate enough to stay at the incomparable Staniel Cay Yacht Club used as a Bond base whilst filming some Thunderball water-based scenes and situated right next to Thunderball Grotto (or James Bond Cave or as it was known in Thunderball - Golden Grotto, the fictional home of Largo's "the most dangerous, the most savage Golden Grotto Sharks - which I snorkelled almost every day. If you visit Staniel Cay Yacht Club you can still find a couple of old photos taken during filming on the wall in the bar area.

I remember the first time I saw Thunderball and being mesmerised by those incredible underwater scenes and wondering how much of that azure beauty was real and how much was manufactured. Well, I can assure you that the Bahamas are absolutely magnificent and the water really is that crystal clear. Its beauty is only matched by the friendliness of the Bahamians. It is no wonder that Sir Sean Connery decided to relocate there.
Thunderball (1965) Original Poster
Thunderball (1965) Original Poster

Contrary to online reports the Bahamas have been a backdrop to eight six Bond films. Three of them; Thunderball (1965), non-canon Never Say Never Again (1983) and most recently Casino Royale (2006) actually featured Bahamian locations. Whilst another four; You Only Live Twice (1967), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), For Your Eyes Only (1981) and The World is Not Enough (1999) used a second unit to shoot underwater scenes only.

Testament to just how good the underwater conditions are, as Pinewood Studios - home of James Bond have one of the best underwater shooting facilities in the world.

An eagle-eyed Bond fan and long time Bahamas resident has pointed out the gate below from the Rock Point location does not actually feature in Thunderball. But the entrance is from the Lyford Cay Estate, where Sir Sean resided.

FLASHBACKS OF A FOOL FILM LOCATION - CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

Flashbacks of a Fool Film LocationDaniel Craig stars as Joe, a hedonistic British actor whose Hollywood career is starting to nosedive. Takes me right back when you were young....

As well as playing the lead role, Daniel Craig is the executive producer of this film. It has been a pet project for a while. With the success of his new Bond fame the money came into place.

The part of the bitter and twisted film star was written with Craig in mind by his friend,
Baillie Walsh, before the Bond star got famous.

"When he wrote the part for me about five or six years ago, I certainly didn't have the success I did now," says Craig, keen to stress that the tale of a successful but arrogant film star is not about him.

The film was mainly shot in Cape Town, South Africa and Malibu, California.

For the scene where Joe meets his agent and director of his potential next role. He meets the two at an upmarket restaurant overlooking the sea. Both the interior and exterior scenes were filmed at Salt Restaurant at The Ambassador Hotel in Bantry Bay, Cape Town, South Africa.
