Christopher Nolan & Emma Thomas introduce their modern classic DUNKIRK and answer some questions about DUNKIRK - EVENT REPORT

The Establishing Shot Christopher Nolan & Emma Thomas introduce their modern classic DUNKIRK and answer some questions about DUNKIRK - EVENT REPORTSo last week I was very privileged to go along to an early preview screening of Dunkirk with an extended introduction from Christopher Nolan.

I have to say a large part of the draw for me was the “extended introduction” bit, for me there is some frustration when a filmmaker pops up to introduce their film and doesn't really give any insight into their vision or the thinking behind their involvement in the creation of film. So I'm glad to report that the BFI and Christopher Nolan over-delivered in this respect.

The world premiere of Dunkirk was held at Odeon Leicester Square with an annex screening at the British Film Institute IMAX, which I passed by on my way to the preview screening at the BFI itself.

I visit the BT Tower for the riveting Fear The Walking Dead Season 3 pre-premiere launch - EVENT REPORT

The Establishing Shot visits the BT Tower for the riveting Fear The Walking Dead Season 3 pre-premiere launch - EVENT REPORT Last week I went out for an absolutely ace evening, but first some preamble - sometime last year we were fortunate to crack an invite and go along to the Fear the Walking Dead Season 2 Premiere hosted by AMC and BT at Millbank Tower and I have to say it was an absolutely stunning night and evening to remember, certainly one of our best industry nights out for that year - but that is a story for another time.

In anticipation of the evenings events we caught up with Season 1 of Fear the Walking Dead, as well as the Walking Dead: Flight 462 mini web series - which leads into and crosses over with Season 2  and we were hooked.

Yea! I'm thinking John Wick is back! John Wick: Chapter 2 an evening of fun and surprises as Keanu Reeves & Chad Stahelski pop in – EVENT REPORT/FILM REVIEW

Keanu Reeves surprises us at a screening of John Wick 2Last Friday I was extremely fortunate to go along to a very special gala screening of John Wick: Chapter Two but this post starts with the arrival of a mysterious gold coin in my mail. On the one side of the coin a Latin inscription - “Ens Causa Sui” above a lion and a shield with a sun emanating from it. All the hallmarks of an exciting mystery or at least engaging cinema experience.

The lion, the shield and the sun are all fairly well known and accepted allegorical and symbolic representations of certain qualities:

The Establishing Shot JOHN WICK 2 ENS CAUSA SUI COIN

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)

After returning to the criminal underworld to repay a debt, John Wick discovers that a large bounty has been put on his life.

Director:
Chad Stahelski

Writers:

Derek Kolstad

Stars:
Keanu Reeves, Riccardo Scamarcio, Ian McShane, Ruby Rose, Common, Claudia Gerini, Lance Reddick, Laurence Fishburne, John Leguizamo
The lion. King of the beasts. The guardian. Valour, the fighting spirit and strength.
     The Shield. Defence and protection.
Whilst most importantly the sun and it's rays of light. Traditional the the sun is symbolic of a supreme or higher being. Its position at the centre of the shield giving it and what is represents important prominence. The rays of the sun also have meaning, they could represent the all seeing, all knowing eye of the supreme or the rays could mean heat/arrows that purify. All very old testament.

The allegorical imagery combined with the Latin inscription “Ens Causa Sui” meaning: “His reason for being” or “being one's own cause” or “being the cause of” or just “being his cause”. Possibly lean towards a deeper provenience that may become clear as revelations are made.

Now I'm not prattling on about this really cool little prop because I'm a geek, well that too, but does this close up look at one of the coins used by the secret underworld of John Wick as their own currency and ingress to the closed doors of their secret society give us some insight into the bigger scheme of things that may be further fleshed out? It is clear that there is something bigger going in the world of John Wick that needs further exploration.

Matthew McConaughey introduces his latest outstanding film GOLD and tells us a little bit about the film. I love Gold! - EVENT REPORT

Matthew McConaughey introduces his latest outstanding film GOLDLast Friday I was fortunate to crack an invite to what was the hottest ticket of the week  -  an early screening of Stephen Gaghan's outstanding Gold starring Matthew McConaughey, Bryce Dallas Howard and Edgar Ramirez, held at the gorgeous Ham Yard Hotel.

Look any reason to visit the Ham Yard Hotel is good (if you get the chance pop into the magnificent Dive Bar, the film themed Bollywood Spill Out Area and the Croc Bowling Alley) but this was a particularly good occasion as none other than Matthew McConaughey himself popped in to introduce his latest film Gold to the jam packed screening.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage European Premiere at the O2 Arena - EVENT REPORT

xXx: Return of Xander Cage European Premiere EVENT REPORTEarlier this week the lady & I had a special date as we kicked off 2017 by heading to the O2 Arena for the European Premiere of the third film in the XXX series, which sees Vin Diesel's return to the franchise - xXx: Return of Xander Cage.

After a delay, apparently caused by Vin Diesel's helicopter arriving late, yes, you read that correctly Vin Diesel arrived by helicopter and the rest of the cast arrived by taking a luxury speedboat out along the Thames.

Alex Zane presents the FDA guide to all the Autumn/Winter 2016/2017 film releases & Tom Conti Interview - EVENT REPORT

FDA Autumn Winter Preview Tom Conti InterviewA couple of weeks back I was fortunate to crack an invite to the FDA's Autumn/Winter Preview Event, this is where the Film Distributors Association give us a taste of upcoming releases and what we can expect from the Autumn/Winter period.

To be honest I have missed the last couple of FDA events but was determined to make it this time around as the countdown master and presenter, not just another pretender, the real contender for film schedule mender and part time centaur sporting a new chevelure while he renders a verdict on upcoming films and that guy off the telly - Alex Zane (who you may know from such films as: Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo & Ibiza Undead amongst his many, many other endeavours ) was hosting. And he is always incredibly entertaining. I thought a post would make nice catch up of releases coming up for the rest of the year and early next year.

The evening was as surprising as it was fun, we were greeted with refreshments and exhibition of film art from the Autumn/Winter release schedule as well as a nostalgic display of vintage cinema paraphernalia including usher's uniforms, chairs and signs on loan from The Cinema Museum.

Idris Elba surprises us at a special screening of Star Trek Beyond - EVENT REPORT

Ant-Man's Peyton Reed and Paul Rudd surprise us at a London screening of Marvel's Ant-ManL ast week I was fortunate to crack invites to a special early screening of Justin Lin's Star Trek Beyond at the Picturehouse Central and I was super stoked. I do not believe I have overly banged on about it but  - Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek is one of my favourite properties/franchises. I guess I should possibly qualify that a bit - as a kid I loved the original 60s show, not initially but very quickly it became a favourite for me and even though I saw it a good while after its initial televised release. I couldn't wait to sit down once a week and hear William Shatner's voice over start the show with:
Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.”

And see what adventure the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise had landed themselves in that week. I loved James Tiberius Kirk's we come in peace - take charge attitude backed up by a team that excelled in their individual roles but came together in a way that transcended their designated rank as - the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Joel Silver, Shane Black, Matt Bomer, Angourie Rice & Russell Crowe surprise us at a screening of The Nice Guys - EVENT REPORT

Ant-Man's Peyton Reed and Paul Rudd surprise us at a London screening of Marvel's Ant-ManA couple of weeks back I was fortunate to go along to an early screening of Shane Black's new action comedy film The Nice Guys starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling (as The Nice Guys). I settled into my seat and got comfy for what, was sure to be two hours of fun. The lights dim slightly, but before the film starts - a man strolls out of the shadows to make a couple of pre film announcements.

My jaw drops in jubilant surprise as the guy says something like:

Hi, I'm Joel Silver.

I tried to maintain my equanimity but Holy Cow! That's Joel Silver. The-e Joel Silver. Hollywood Legend and film Producer behind some of my favourite films. Joel Silver who has been involved in nearly every great action film in the last 30 years, including the likes of: The Warriors, Streets of Fire, Commando, Lethal Weapon, Predator, Die Hard, RoadhouseThe Last Boy Scout, The Matrix, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Sherlock Holmes, etc., etc.

The Establishing Shot: THE NICE GUYS JOEL SILVER, SHANE BLACK, MATT BOMER, ANGOURIE RICE WELCOME NICE GUY RUSSELL CROWE TO THE STAGE

As flamboyant as any character in his movies, Joel Silver can be credited along with Jerry Bruckheimer as practically reinventing the action film genre in the 1980s. - IMDB

Admittedly there have been some misses in his portfolio but, to be able to consistently make hits that nearly always supersedes the previous film, over a near 4 decade career in a business that is notoriously fickle, is truly something and the calling card of a great producer.

He went on to say something to the effect of he's the Producer of Nice Guys, thank you for coming ... but I couldn't be sure because all the time I'm thinking Holy cow! That's Joel Silver.

Then he invites Director Shane Black onto the stage to say some words and introduce The Nice Guys.

SalonQP 2015 Highlights I - Jaime Hayon, Marc Newson's Hour Glass & MB&F's Arachnophobia, Objectif Horlogerie & Jean Rousseau

amazon prime the man in the high castle This post was originally intended to be a “Must see things at SalonQP 2015”. You know the type of post I'm referring to - low on content and high on hyperbole - but after spending some time at SalonQP absorbing the atmosphere and chatting with some of the talented and clearly determined watchmakers. I thought I really would be doing them a disservice if I didn't at least try to capture some of the innovative essence and elegance that SalonQP and their watchmakers bring to London - once a year for their annual luxury exhibition dedicated to fine watches.

...the name? It’s from the abbreviation for Quantième Perpétuel, the French term for “perpetual calendar”. QP is all about the long view and the highest standards.”
                                                                  - excerpt from the SalonQP website

How could I not take some time and try cobble together something a little more substantial? Initially I had thought I may be overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of time pieces and objects of desire on display from the 80 exhibiting brands at SalonQP 2015. Also the large number of people that typically attend these kind of events was a factor in my concern that I might not get a chance to see  everything I hoped. Last year over 7,000 people visited and as SalonQP is growing from strength to strength - this year even more were expected.

The Establishing Shot: SALONQP 2015 SAATCHI GALLERY QUEUE AT NIGHT , LONDON

Thankfully this was not the case at all as the exhibition is spaciously laid out over all three floors of giant The Saatchi Gallery. I was able to make my way around the entire exhibition in a couple of hours but more time was needed for visits, demonstrations and browsing pieces as there is more than enough to keep you occupied for days if needed.

After a visit it is easy to see why SalonQP is the UK (if not Europe's) premier fine watch exhibition. I hasten to add that although the focus of SalonQP is time pieces - it is very much a lifestyle exhibition - with high end luxury houses from other areas like; Lotus (because cars & watches), Linn Audio, Berry Bros. & Rudd, Creed Fragrance, Harrods, et al, showcasing their goods to meet the needs of people who enjoy, nay celebrate life.  I would be surprised if SalonQP did not grow into a complete luxury lifestyle exhibition in the future.

The Establishing Shot: SALONQP 2015 - HARRODS LOUNGE & BAR - SAATCHI GALLERY, LONDON

SalonQP is an extraordinary opportunity to research your next purchase, meet some of the most talented crafts people in the watch business, see early watch samples before public release as well as view limited and rare examples of some of the finest watches ever made, listen and discuss aspects of the art & science of Horology (there are talks and seminars from leading watchmakers), view specially curated exhibitions as well as have a jolly good time which seems core to the SalonQP experience.

The Establishing Shot: SALONQP 2015 - OBJECTIF HORLOGERIE EXPERT WATCHMAKER - SAATCHI GALLERY, LONDON

But for me, if there is one overriding take away from my visit SalonQP 2015 it is that I may never look at a watch the same way again - for most of us watches arrive as fully formed objects of function and beauty an almost abstracted thing distant from its origins, so understandably it is easy to forget that they are the composite of a long road and meticulous hard work. Nowhere was this more pertinent for me than when I stopped by Objectif Horlogerie to watch one of their craftsmen busy constructing a time piece.

I visit Arkham Asylum for The Rogues Gallery - Creation of a Super-Villain book launch & tick off riding in the Batmobile bucket list item - EVENT REPORT

Batman: Arkham Knight Cape & Cowl Exhibition London A couple of weeks ago we had one of the best nights out in ages, in fact it was possibly the best Halloween night I will ever have. We had an absolutely ace evening of immersive fourth wall crossing, Gothic shocks, surprises and dreams coming true. It all started when I received a creepy email inviting me to a Halloween get together at The Crypt Gallery, Kings Cross to view  “The Rogues Gallery - Creation of a Super-Villain”.

The Rogues Gallery - Creation of a Super-Villain
The Rogues Gallery - Creation of a Super-Villain

What was this all about? I wondered. But as I was very keen to visit The Crypt Gallery an underground venue that had piqued my interest over the years –  we were in. The invite was accompanied by a rather disturbing and edgy recording purporting to come from the inside of Arkham Asylum and the voice sounded a lot like Mr Long Green, the Laughing Man, The Ace of Knaves, Joe Kerr, Dr. J Reko, the Harlequin of Hate or the Clown Prince of chaos himself The Joker.

Of course this was all pointing to one thing - The Rogues Gallery may be a super villain team synonymous with Central City's Flash but since the 80s The Rogues Gallery has slowly shifted to also mean a super group of foes based around Gotham. Had the Crypt been turned into Arkham Asylum?

On the evening as I looked out across the river it was almost as if a signal was shooting up and lighting the sky alerting me to start our journey north to Kings Cross.

I pay a short visit to Marvel UK's tiny Ant-Man Micro Art Exhibition & have a small chat with artist Willard Wigan aka What is this? An exhibition for Ants? Oh! - EXHIBITION VISIT

Willard Wigan Ant-Man Micro Art Exhibition Earlier this week I headed back to Old Street to see the launch of the marvellous Marvel UK The Antsibition or Willard Wigan's micro art Ant-Man Exhibition.

A little while back I received a little invitation to a pop up gallery in Old Street Tube Station, where to celebrate the release of Marvel’s Ant-Man into UK cinemas on the 17th July 2015 Marvel presents The Antsibition in partnership with IMAX 3D.

Marvel UK have teamed up with IMAX and renowned micro-artist Willard Wigan to host a small exhibition or Antsibition of Willard Wigan's micro-sculptures and unveil a specially made Ant-Man sculpture.

The “Ant” sized gallery will be open to the public from 14th to 17th 20th July 2015 at Old Street Station in London, and will give visitors a unique chance to experience the tiny world of Ant-Man up close as miniature magic is bought to the gallery which measures just 4.5m by 3.2m.

I had actually heard of Willard Wigan's sculptures but did not connect the dots till I was actually at the exhibition and realised Willard Wigan was the same micro-artist who has created a buzz with his tiny sculptures, is the same Willard Wigan of the nine camels through an eye of the needle fame and actually holds the Guinness Records title of the worlds smallest sculptures.

All photos from my visit can be viewed on our Flickr Channel.

Ant-Man's Peyton Reed and Paul Rudd surprise us at a London screening of Marvel's Ant-Man - EVENT REPORT

Ant-Man's Peyton Reed and Paul Rudd surprise us at a London screening of Marvel's Ant-ManEarlier this week we were fortunate to crack invites an early screening to one of this Summer's big blockbusters - Marvel's Ant-Man. And boy did we have a lot of fun! But this isn't about my thoughts on Ant-Man rather the very special surprise we got before the film started as Marvel brought along two very special guests.

After Stu Oakley from Disney hopped on stage to welcome us and tell us to put away our phones and cameras he surprised us by inviting Ant-Man Director Peyton Reed onto the stage to introduce Ant-Man to us.

Now if you are a comic fan I know what you are thinking – no you are not the only comic reader who thinks Peyton Reed sounds like he should be part of Reed Richards' Fantastic Four family.

Andy Serkis talks Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Acting, The Imaginarium, the Future of Motion Capture, Caesar's development, the possible futures of Planet of The Apes and tells us a role he would still like to play - An Evening with Andy Serkis Part 2 - IN CONVERSATION

Andy Serkis talks Dawn of The Planet of The ApesContinuing on from Part One of an evening with Andy Serkis, in which I gush about the wonderfulness of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and can be found over here!

Whilst my head was buzzing from the celluloid high that I haven't had in awhile from a film. Empire's Don Jolin popped onto the stage for a chat with Mr Andy Serkis.

If you have read my review of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes you know that I loved it not only as an incredible piece of entertainment but as an insightful and intelligent metaphor of exploration of the human condition. So far the remakes of The Planet of The Apes films have been extraordinary films doing both justice to Pierre Boulle's original tale as well as forging a place for themselves in the modern zeitgeist.

Much of what makes The Planet of The Apes films as magic as they are is - the authenticity of the simian characters. Their credibility on screen a combination of astounding effects making their computer generated avatars incredibly lifelike. As well as the emotive performances behind the Apes giving them individual personality, emotion and life - so much so that you forget that you are watching computer generated imagery.

And nowhere is bringing these avatars to life more profoundly or poignantly manifested than in the immeasurable talent of Mr Andy Serkis.

I say extremely privileged as the evening turned out to be one of my most memorable in a while. The event was held at the Ham Yard Hotel, this was my first visit to the Ham Yard and WOW! What a hotel. Belying its very central London location The Ham Yard makes incredible use of its enormous double volume space to create an experience - not just another London boutique hotel. Any future hotels being developed in London Central would do well to take a leaf out of the Ham Yard's concept book. Their screening room doing justice to both the crisp, beautiful cinematography as well as the rumbling sound and Michael Giacchino's score which gives the whole film a backbone on which to stand.

This was my first viewing of the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and I had been careful to stay away from anything that might be considered a spoiler as it was I had been looking forward to seeing it for ages, since Rupert Wyatt's absolutely marvellous Rise of the Planet of the Apes. I loved Rise of the Planet of the Apes it hit me right where it should and thankfully many others felt the same way as it won over the masses looking for blockbuster style fare, those looking for a film with substance and even the doubters wary of a another remake of Pierre Boulle's cautionary tale of a future society gone wrong.

First Look: Paddington - Hugh Bonneville gives us a sneak peek at Paddington or you won't believe how this lost bear from Peru reacts when he meets this family with 8 year old kids. You can bearly imagine what happens next - Event Report

Cuban Fury NIck Frost IntroductionHow do I frame Paddington? Do I talk anecdotally about my history with Michael Bond's much loved bear? Or do I jump in with the James Bond like reboot (also starring Ben Whishaw) of the Peruvian Ursidae? Well bear with me here.

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of going along to a sneak peek of Director Paul King's Paddington. That is Paul King - the same man who directed the incredibly imaginative Mighty Boosh TV series (& live tour) and 2009's Bunny and the Bull. I don't want to labour it - but The Mighty Boosh is one of the most ingenious shows we have had on TV in a good long time and some of the credit must go to Paul King's dynamic and clever direction making budget obstacles springboards for creativity.

I have a particular soft spot for Paddington as like him I left my homeland to settle in the UK. Coming from a country that used to have a rather blunt approach to culture, more so to childhood culture - granted there were always a lot of other issues that were more pressing. I have always been fond of the Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens and of course the Paddington Bear statue in Paddington Station - they represent Britishness for me as well as something beyond that. Someone took the time to create a monument to childhood dreams with (arguably) no immediate financial return (creator of Peter Pan, JM Barrie gave all the rights to Peter Pan to the Great Ormond Street Hospital)  and Paddington Bear has a teamed up with the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) with the Paddington Bear Trail. This type of  goodwill was recently extended to Kings Cross Station where you can find Harry Potter's Platform 9.5 - they are touchstones for generations of children to enjoy - something I have always felt was the sign of a great nation.

Not only that, but Paddington's dress sense has always personified the travellers maxim for me - Be prepared. Besides which for a long time I commuted from Reading into London, Paddington Station to be exact and many a late night was spent waiting for the express train homewards with Paddington keeping me company

Anton Corbijn introduces A Most Wanted Man and discusses why it was an important film for him - Event Report

Anton Corbijn introduces A Most Wanted ManE arlier this week I was fortunate to go along with several Establishing Shot readers to a gala screening of Anton Corbijn's latest (and third) film, an adaptation of John le Carré's 21st novel A Most Wanted Man. At a certain point in the film I was unexpectedly shocked - it felt like the cinematic version of a cold slap or a punch in the gut. This would not have been possible had Corbijn not carefully and meticulously seduced me into the world of his lead character Günther Bachmann, masterfully played by Philip Seymour Hoffman.

A Most Wanted Man puts a human face to politicking in our post 9/11 world a world that has sadly become closer to the vision that the engineers and perpetrators of heinous terrorism would like, a world in which decency slowly ebbs away as it becomes more polarised with punitive cookie cutter solutions being attempted to address dynamic and nebulous issues.

The Establishing Shot: ANTON CORBIJN AT THE A MOST WANTED MAN GALA SCREENING - CHARLOTTE STREET HOTEL LONDON

If you read the Establishing Shot you will no doubt be aware that I am a fan of master of the spy genre John le Carré's works and that I have been eagerly awaiting Anton Corbijn's version of  A Most Wanted Man.

So going along to the screening and introduction by Anton Corbijn was a real treat, as was briefly chatting with one of the stars of A Most Wanted Man - Daniel Brühl whose performance as Niki Lauda in Ron Howard's Rush absolutely blew me away and is up there in one of the most outstanding and electric performances in recent years and made Rush one of my top 10 films of last year.

But A Most Wanted Man is very much Philip Seymour Hoffman's film as he breathes life into the complex character of Günther Bachmann the sharp, slightly broken, cynical but ever hopeful head of a non existent anti terrorist organisation based in Hamburg. A city that the 9/11 attacks were planned in and hawkishly makes sure that it never happens again.

But as this is a John le Carré tale, a man who worked for several years in the British Intelligence service and is loosely based on actual events - nothing is straightforward or black and white - even our heroes employ questionable tactics to get the job done as the net from internal governmental competition, politics and larger external forces draws tighter on them.

This is the world in which Issa Karpov (Grigoriy Dobrygin) along with the audience are dragged into as the young Muslim, a suspected Chechen terrorist climbs out of the Elbe river and into the Hamburg shadow world.

I believe to truly appreciate A Most Wanted Man you have to go in knowing nothing, unless you have read the book in which case you know what to expect, and even then Corbijn's approach needs much thought or at least a second viewing to catch up with events portrayed – as A Most Wanted Man shares much with Tomas Alfredson's earlier adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and eschews the Hollywood mainstream emotional touchstone tropes of sex, violence, nudity, expository flashbacks and the obligatory romance to lure us into the story.

A Most Wanted Man is a pot boiler as Günther Bachmann's detective work slowly reveals each piece of the puzzle and builds to its conclusion.

And whilst some of the dialogue may seem a bit stilted and reactions arbitrary, when contrasted with the clever or witty Don Draper like intelligence we have come to expect from our self referential culture – the characters in A Most Wanted Man are more like authentic people caught in a fraught filled world where there is a constant threat of sorts at their heels and they think and react more like real people without some grand master plan that is going to save the day (apart from Günther Bachmann that is) and are in genuine fear of consequences.

Anyway that is a long way around of saying don't read the synopsis below or even watch the trailer just go see the film and let the the story roll out for you.

Below is a clip of Anton Corbijn introducing A Most Wanted Man and explaining why this film was important for him on the evening.

The Establishing Shot: DIRECTOR ANTON CORBIJN INTRODUCES A MOST WANTED MAN

Hamburg, the present day. The city - where the 9/11 bombers lived and plotted - remains on high alert. When a brutally tortured immigrant, identified by Interpol as a possible terror suspect, turns up and lays claim to his father's ill-gotten fortune, he attracts the interest of a secretive anti-terror unit headed by Gunter Bachmann (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Working with the CIA and forming an uneasy alliance with spy Martha Sullivan (Robin Wright), Bachmann must uncover the truth about the man's identity and his possible connections to high level terrorists. As the clock ticks down and the stakes rise, the race is on to establish this most wanted man's true motives – is he an oppressed victim or a militant jihadist bent on destruction? Based on the novel by the master of the spy genre, John le Carré, A Most Wanted Man is a gripping espionage thriller that prickles with tension right through to its last heart-stopping scene.

There are further similarities to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy as the central character Gunter Bachmann is pivotal to the narrative, as is the charismatic performance needed to bring him to life in this world and Philip Seymour Hoffman is absolutely mesmerising in the role. So much so that I wondered what the characters life was like when not on screen, thankfully we see glimpses of this life as well.  Bachmann rivals George Smiley's esoteric knowledge and sparkles with intelligence but has one up on him as he lives in our post modern world - I can only marvel at the possibilities of how Philip Seymour Hoffman would have brought him to screen in further tales - that in my opinion are very much needed.

As with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy the cast is made of a formidable talent in smaller roles most notably Robin Wright and Willem Dafoe. Sadly I feel that whilst Robin Wright shines in her role as US diplomat Martha Sullivan, Dafoe isn't given enough to set his banker Tommy Brue, a critical role, apart with his customary aplomb. Possibly I was hoping for so much more as Dafoe crackles with an energy that needs more space and could have fleshed out Brue into one of, if not the most interesting character of the film.

A Most Wanted Man is a film about issues, ideologies and personalities in a post 9/11 world and should at the very least make us think about the world we live in, if not spark debate on where we are going as a people.
