The Establishing Shot Film News It's been awhile since my last news update a combination of injuries that had me off my feet for a couple of months and a haphazard late Summer that caused scheduling nightmares but a wrap this week has given me some time to prep this edition of The Establishing Shot's All The Film News you need to know, in between preparing for our search for the great and elusive Mola.

Over the last couple of months I have seen numerous films, unfortunately the majority have not been worth mentioning but there have been many highlights.

THE ESTABLISHING SHOT MAGAZINE EDITION 2 2013 ALL THE FILM NEWS WORTH READING

A QUICK RECAP OF FILMS SEEN RECENTLY
At the UK Cinema Showcase I managed to pack in a record (for me) 16 screenings over 3 days. With great films like; Rush, Black Fish, Metro Manila & Ain’t them Bodies Saints and good films like; Pain and Gain, The Great Hip Hop Hoax & The Worlds End. All well worth a watch as well as many others.

Ron Howard's Rush is in my top 10 for the year and took me by surprise as an outstanding performance from Daniel Brühl as Niki Lauda stole the show. I managed to review Black Fish over here!

And the subtlety and emotion of
Metro Manila made it a long time favourite of mine. The slow burning Ain’t them Bodies Saints is a quite, reflective film that won't please those looking for explosions punctuated with gunshots.

A note on Pain & Gain - it's good despite the awful near Domino visual stylings it has decent performances and captures the mind set of the seemingly bizarre characters perfectly, unfortunately many UK reviewers who have local myopia will not be able to see past the cultural nuances. Another surprise was Thanks For Sharing which was charming despite some shameless performances, OK one in particular, who also happens to sneak in a really bizarre pitch for her lifestyle website. But it continues Mark Ruffalo's rise as one of the most charming actors working today and officially marks Josh Gad as a future star.

I enjoyed two science fiction films on the opposite ends of the spectrum Shane Carruth's Upstream Colour a reflective and original science fiction film which really deserves a lot more accolades than its receiving as it is a brilliant piece of lo-fi film making  that breaks boundaries and the other on the completely opposite end of the spectrum is David Twohy's Riddick which offers imaginative high entertainment and a lot of bang for your buck.

More recently Woody Allen's BLUE JASMINE COMPLETELY BLEW ME AWAY as Allen seemingly (and not soon enough) leaves his charming and light period behind to make a film of genuine substance with incredible performances from Cate Blanchett, an unrecognisable Sally Hawkins and Andrew Dice Clay in this near perfect tragi-comedy which plays on expectations and personalities. For another great performance from Sally Hawkins check out Phil Morrison's low key All Is Bright in cinemas later this year.

I also appreciated Denis Villeneuve's much awaited Prisoners, which is a worthy follow up to his earlier Incendies and landed somewhere between bloody good and absolutely awesome for me. It's been ages since a film like this has gripped me as much. It appears Villeneuve has made the definitive film of this genre.Villeneuve is a master director bringing naturalistic and powerful performances out of his cast as well as creating moods, specifically a dread filled ambience which kept me on the edge of my seat throughout - all with help from Roger Deakins of course.

Prisoners allows Jake Gyllenhaal to act and boy does he, it also went much of the distance for me to accept Hugh Jackman as a serious actor. Stand out performances are delivered across the board from Maria BelloViola DavisTerrence HowardMelissa Leo and a creepy Paul Dano. I think that is it as far as a film recap goes. So without further ado here is:

Having spent his whole life in isolation the boy now discovers the warmth of friendship and the pleasures of something more. THOMAS VINTERBERG TO DIRECTCarol starts shooting Spring 2014

NFox Searchlight Pictures announced that Thomas Vinterberg’s FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD has begun principal photography in the UK, September 16th.  The film stars Carey Mulligan (THE GREAT GATSBY, DRIVE), Matthias Schoenaerts (RUST AND BONE, BULLHEAD), Michael Sheen (MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, FROST/NIXON), Tom Sturridge (ON THE ROAD, PIRATE RADIO) and Juno Temple (THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, KILLER JOE).

The script was written by David Nicholls, author and screenwriter of “One Day” and “Starter for Ten.”  Allon Reich and Andrew Macdonald of DNA Films are producing with Christine Langan of BBC Films executive producing.  The film will shoot on location in Dorset, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and London.

“I am excited to be working with DNA, Fox Searchlight and this talented cast and crew on FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD.  It is a great privilege to bring such a wonderful piece of very English literature to the screen,” says Vinterberg.

“David Nicholls’ smart and compelling reworking of Hardy’s classic has found its ideal counterpart in the hugely talented Thomas Vinterberg. The incomparable Carey Mulligan - the perfect Bathsheba - sits at the heart of a mouth-watering cast who will do justice to this rich and irresistible tale,” said Langan.

“Far from the Madding Crowd is one of the most enduring and captivating stories in English literature.  David Nicholls' script beautifully captures the heart of Hardy's original and we are thrilled to be bringing it to the big screen with Thomas Vinterberg. It is very exciting to be working with Carey Mulligan again, as well as an exceptional cast and crew all round,” said Macdonald and Reich.
Claudia Lewis, Fox Searchlight Pictures President of Production states: “We are always thrilled to partner with our frequent collaborators at DNA and welcome the chance to work with the talented Thomas Vinterberg.  We're honored that he will bring his vision to this romantic and enduring literary classic, especially with such an extraordinary cast.”

Joining Vinterberg (FESTEN, THE HUNT) on the film are director of photography Charlotte Bruus Christensen, who collaborated with him on THE HUNT and SUBMARINO, production designer Kave Quinn (TRAINSPOTTING, THE WOMAN IN BLACK), BAFTA Award winner and four times Academy Award nominated costume designer Janet Patterson (THE PIANO, BRIGHT STAR), BAFTA award winner hair and make-up designer Sian Grigg (EX MACHINA, NEVER LET ME GO), and Academy Award winning editor Claire Simpson (THE CONSTANT GARDENER, PLATOON).

WARNER BROS. ANNOUNCES EXPANDED CREATIVE PARTNERSHIP WITH J.K. ROWLING
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be an original story and will mark Rowling’s screenwriting debut. It is planned as the first picture in a new film series. Set in the wizarding world, the story will feature magical creatures and characters, some of which will be familiar to devoted Harry Potter fans. This miniseries begins production in 2014.

Warner Bros. Entertainment has announced an expanded creative partnership with world-renowned, best-selling author J.K. Rowling. At the center of the partnership is a new film series from Rowling’s world of witches and wizards, inspired by Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbook “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” and the adventures of the book’s fictitious author, Newt Scamander.  The announcement was made by Kevin Tsujihara, Chief Executive Officer, Warner Bros. Entertainment.

“Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world,” said Rowling.  “The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.”  (Expanded Rowling quote at bottom of release.)

“We are incredibly honored that Jo has chosen to partner with Warner Bros. on this exciting new exploration of the world of wizardry which has been tremendously successful across all of our businesses,” said Tsujihara. “She is an extraordinary writer, who ignited a reading revolution around the world, which then became an unprecedented film phenomenon. We know that audiences will be as excited as we are to see what her brilliant and boundless imagination conjures up for us.”
In addition to the film series, “Fantastic Beasts” will also be developed across the Studio’s video game, consumer products and digital initiatives businesses, including enhanced links with Pottermore.com, Rowling’s digital online experience built around the Harry Potter stories.

The Studio’s expanded partnership with Rowling also covers the continued expansion of its Harry Potter activities, including the wonderful Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme parks in conjunction with partner Universal Parks and Resorts (currently in Orlando, FL; opening in Hollywood, CA and Osaka, Japan), digital initiatives (including Pottermore), video games, consumer products and visitor attractions.

In addition, Warner Bros. will serve as the worldwide TV distributor (excluding the U.K.) of J.K. Rowling’s upcoming television adaptation for the BBC of “The Casual Vacancy,” her best-selling first novel aimed at adult audiences.

ROONEY MARA TO STAR OPPOSITE CATE BLANCHETT IN CAROL
Produced by Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley from Number 9 Films,  It has been adapted for the screen by Phyllis Nagy (Mrs Harris) and is based on renowned suspense author Patricia Highsmith’s novella (‘Strangers on a Train’, ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’).Carol starts shooting Spring 2014

Number 9 Films has announced that Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara is attached to star opposite Cate Blanchett in Todd Haynes’ Carol.  Having recently worked with David Fincher on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Steven Soderbergh on Side Effects, Rooney will next be seen in Spike Jonze’s Her, Stephen Daldry’s Trash and opposite Casey Affleck in Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.

It is co-developed and co-financed by Film4. Christine Vachon’s Killer Films will co-produce.

HanWay Films is handling international sales which include The Weinstein Company in the US, eOne in Canada, Icon in Australia and TF1 in France.

Carol is a love story about pursuit, betrayal and passion that follows the burgeoning relationship between two very different women in 1950s New York.
One, a girl in her twenties working in a department store who dreams of a more fulfilling life, and the other, a wife trapped in a loveless, moneyed marriage desperate to break free.

Todd Haynes said: “We're over the moon to have Rooney on board. I've been a tremendous admirer of her work from the beginning, so the thought of bringing her together with Cate onscreen is thrilling to say the least.”

Elizabeth Karlsen added: "Rooney Mara is one of the most interesting and striking young talents working today. There are few actors who have the weight to play against someone with the extraordinary distinction and mercurial range of Cate Blanchett and she is one of them.  The combination of them both is something potentially sensational. It is a testament to Todd Haynes as a director and the quality of the script that we have managed to attract this exciting calibre of actor."

The only way to clear his name is to uncover the truth about Ambro and this new drug. But it may already be too late, as Grieves soon realises that the answers he seeks are closer to home than he could have ever imagined.
Shot entirely on location in London and Wales, Dreck is set in the near future where natural resources are scarce and all classes of drugs have been legalised. The Drecks is an elite unit created by an over-stretched police force to keep the black market dealers off the streets and the licensed drug companies rich.

Former addict, now Dreck, Frank Grieves (Cowan) is called to investigate an unidentifiable corpse out in the industrial wastelands beyond the teeming Central City. It appears the victim has been injected with a substance that cannot be traced. However, Grieves is warned off any further investigation by his superiors. When a second body shows up – this time alive – and then disappears, Grieves finds himself on wrong side of the biggest drug company of them all – Ambro.
Cowan, who also co-produces the film, says, “I started as an actor on this film, happy to take on the challenge of a fantastic lead role.  But so strong is the story, so high is the ambition and so infectious is Justin’s talent and enthusiasm for this film, I want to see it to the finish line and beyond. I really believe such collaboration can defy the odds and change the landscape in which British film is made.”

Adds Trefgarne, “With Dreck we kind of went against all the prevailing wisdom for a first film. We just couldn’t face trying to make everything work for three characters in a house and so we went in completely the opposite direction.  It’s taken its time but as we get close to finishing production, I look at what we’ve achieved and I realise we have made an epic.”

FORMER AARDMAN AND BBC EXECS LAUNCH NEXT GENERATION ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY
Aardman Animations’ former Head of Broadcast Miles Bullough has teamed up with former BBC creative executive Jesse Cleverly to launch Wildseed Studios, a next-generation entertainment content incubator designed to attract creators looking for funding and expertise - and is calling on emerging and established creators to get in touch here http://www.wildseedstudios.com/sending-ideas-to-wildseed.html and have their ideas commissioned, developed, financed and distributed.Wildseed is planning its public launch for Autumn 2013 once its content pipeline is in full flow.
The company is adopting a portfolio approach to development –  investing up to £10,000 into each of 50 new projects over the next 3 years, with follow-on investment available for projects that make a connection with an audience.

Wildseed has recently completed its first round of funding and has already invested in two projects. The first is a wickedly funny animated show for young adults based on the work of underground UK comic artist Ralph Kidson and features ‘God and Jesus’ where God explains his plans to Jesus for his latest miracle, ‘Animal Job Centre’ where an unemployed squirrel tries to navigate the vagaries of the job market and ‘Serengeti’ where punchy and loutish animals launch into foul-mouthed tirades against each other at the slightest provocation.

The second project is a live-action sci-fi/horror web series from 19 year old creator Drew Casson – a 90 minute, special effects heavy horror sci-fi coming of age story, shot vlog style, about a small English Town being taken over by aliens with Drew’s usual layer of horror, stunning special effects and action.

More projects are expected to be announced soon.
Wildseed describes itself as being platform neutral – putting great characters at the heart of everything it does and then looking to distribute projects to the platforms that best suit the idea. ‘A YouTube Channel will be a big part of what we do’ says co-founder and MD Miles Bullough, ‘but we are also working with creators who, for example, want to produce a mobile game first and that is really exciting for us where there is a great character at the heart of the game’.

Targeting young adult audiences (13 to 35), Wildseed Studios is looking for ideas in four genres: Genre Fiction (Sci-Fi/horror/fantasy), Animated Sitcom, Character Comedy and then also comedy for Kids 6-11 in both live action and animation. ‘We have also set aside 10 of our 50 potential investments for ‘Wildseed’s Wildseeds’ – ideas that don’t necessarily fit any of the above genres but that we love and want to get involved with anyway’ says co-founder and Creative Director, Jesse Cleverly.

Before setting up Wildseed Studios, Bullough spent 9 years at Aardman as Head of Broadcast working on international and multi-platform brands such as Shaun The Sheep, Wallace and Gromit and Creature Comforts as well as setting up Aardman’s Rights and Digital divisions. Prior to that he was MD at comedy indie Absolutely which produced shows such as Trigger Happy TV, C4’s Armstrong & Miller, Stressed Eric and The Jack Docherty Show.

Cleverly has been running his own IP development company Connective Media for the past five years working with a range of blue chip clients. Prior to this he spent 10 years at the BBC in a range of editorial positions. He was trained as a script editor at BBC Films where he put the film Eastern Promises into development. He was then asked to join the team setting up BBC Fictionlab as Head of Development exploring the new formats, new platforms and new technologies which would enable storytelling in the digital age.
He finished his time at the BBC working as Head of Co-productions and Acquisitions at CBBC. Prior to the BBC he was Head of Marketing at the Royal Court Theatre for Stephen Daldry where he commissioned the world’s first theatre website and launched 90 new plays.

‘Miles and I have spent the last 9 months working on our business plan and fund-raising’ says Cleverly, ‘and we have found that there are lots of incredible creators out there who are making original engaging content with huge potential, but who lack the resources and experience to take what they do to the next level. We aim to be the company that enables them to develop into the next generation of entertainment trail blazers’.

‘We’ve also had a great reaction to our plans from established creators’, says Bullough. ‘Our proposition of not needing creative control, offering a meaningful share of back-end and moving fast and fearlessly has struck a chord with people who have great CV’s already but are interested in working a new way.’

Wildseed is focussing on low-cost production with its early pilots. ‘Neither we nor our creators make money from our early stage investments – it all goes into the projects’ says Bullough.

Wildseed is looking for its early stage investments to deliver finished content that can be put in front of audiences to gauge their reaction. Where that reaction is positive there will be with greater levels of follow on investment to create projects that break out and establish themselves on multiple platforms including TV, theatrical features and stage shows.
‘For our investment-funnel model to work’, says Bullough, ‘we need just one of our 50 investments to turn into a breakout hit. That feels achievable given our experience, our test and roll out methodology and the amount of talent out there looking for investment and support. The key will be to create characters that the audience wants to be or be with and when we do, to be ready to exploit them across all media and all over the world.’

‘Working on our business idea, writing business plans, presenting, fund-raising and launching a start-up over the last nine months has been a thrilling experience’ says Bullough. ‘What has really been exciting though is the projects that we have been unearthing. Some of the people we are working with are at a turning point in their burgeoning careers we have been able to make a crucial contribution to what they do. This has already been as rewarding for us as anything we have ever been involved in professionally.’

AWARD-WINNING MUSIC PRODUCER RISHI RICH TO SCORE NEW BRITISH FILM, AMAR, AKBAR & TONY
Award-winning producer and music mogul Rishi Rich is teaming up with brand new British independent film, Amar, Akbar & Tony to create the movie’s score.Amar, Akbar & Tony wrapped up filming this June and is getting ready for release in 2014.
Amar Akbar & Tony - Rishi Rich & Atul Malhotra
Amar Akbar & Tony - Rishi Rich & Atul Malhotra
Rich is a highly respected name in the music scene and has made waves in the industry both in the UK and the US. Perhaps best known for his work with Jay Sean and The Rishi Rich Project, he has also worked with international artists such as Mary J Blige, Britney Spears and Estelle.

Rich’s proficiency in music production is what led director Atul Malhotra to approach him for the film’s score. For Rich, the collaboration is incredibly timely. Following his global success in the music industry, Rich made the conscious decision to combine his passion for music with his love of film and turn his talents to scoring.

Rishi Rich is the latest star to attach his name to the film as Amar, Akbar & Tony boasts an all-star cast line-up, with Rez Kempton, Martin Delaney and Sam Vincenti taking the leads. The comedy drama, which also stars Lemon la Vida Loca’s Laura Aikman and former Waterloo Rd star Karen David, is filmed in and around West London, and features a highly original plotline with a gritty twist.
The film celebrates the multi-cultural landscape of Britain, making Rich - with his extensive experience in the UK’s music scene - a perfect fit for the role of film scorer.

Speaking about Rich’s involvement in the film, Malhotra says: “I feel deeply honoured to have Rishi become a part of the Amar, Akbar & Tony family. He is an incredible producer and definitely perfect for the film. He knows his music and most importantly, understands youth culture in the UK. I can’t wait to start working with him.”

Rich commented on his role: “I have wanted to explore film scoring for a while and although I have experimented in other projects, I am particularly excited to work on Amar, Akbar & Tony. The film reflects London culture, a subject I’m particularly fond of so I think this will be a great partnership.”

SUPERBOB – A VERY BRITISH SUPERHERO
The Fyzz Facility, Grain Media and Jones company Productions are delighted to announce that principal photography began on the British romantic comedy SUPERBOB on 7th July 2013. The film will shoot throughout July on locations across London.

SUBERBOB stars Brett Goldstein (Derek), Catherine Tate (Doctor Who), Natalia Tena (Game Of Thrones), Laura Haddock (The Inbetweeners Movie), and they are joined by Ruth Sheen (Run Fat Boy Run) and celebrated British comedian Ricky Grover (Getting On).

When a radioactive meteor crashes to earth, it leaves Bob Kenner, a mild-mannered London postman, with extraordinary capabilities.  He becomes SUPERBOB, a superhero who despite all his superhuman powers is still shy and unassuming – especially when it comes to women.  As Bob tries to balance the increasing demands of the international community with preparations for his first date in six years, matters come to a head when a film crew arrives to document his day off.  Can the world’s only superhero develop the power of basic human interaction……?

SUPERBOB is the debut feature for director Jon Drever and is based on his acclaimed short film of the same name.  Brett Goldstein and Will Bridges share screenwriting credit and producers are Wayne Marc Godfrey and Robert Jones (Run, Fat Boy, Run, The Harry Hill Movie).
Writer/Actor Brett Goldstein said: ‘I’ve dreamt about making SUPERBOB for years now, so to see it all come together and working with such an incredible cast is mindblowing.

Every day, as I crush my testicles into a far too tight superhero costume in a Peckham high street, I look at my wincing face in the mirror and gently repeat my mantra, ‘I’m living the dream…I’m living the dream…’’

Director Jon Drever added:  ‘I feel so lucky that this story has attracted such a cast of brilliant comic actors and am having the time of my life working them. As for Brett, I grew up with him, and although his testicles are a bit too big for the role, we’re working around them.

FRIENDSHIP. LOVE. LOSS. REDEMPTION. - NEW INDEPENDENT BRITISH FEATURE FILM BEING SHOT IN LONDON
Stars of television and the silver screen are among the cast line-up in a new independent feature film set to begin shooting in London on 4th May. The ensemble cast features established home-grown talent and some of the UK’s most recognised celebrities, alongside talented newcomers. The multi-talented cast will come together in the film which celebrates multiculturalism within the UK.
Amar Akbar & Tony - Goldy Notay, Laura Aikman, Karen David
Amar Akbar & Tony - Goldy Notay, Laura Aikman, Karen David ZOOM
Amar Akbar & Tony, an independent production by writer / director Atul Malhotra, is a comedy drama with a highly original plotline and cleverly developed script which embodies and depicts the unique and vibrant landscape of London.

The title alludes to the 1970s Bollywood classic Amar Akbar Anthony and revolves around the strong bond of friendship bordering on brotherhood between the three main characters. But that is where the similarities with the Bollywood film ends. Amar, Akbar & Tony is a real coming of age drama that celebrates the inclusiveness of British culture.

Martin Delaney (Katherine Bigelow’s Oscar-winning Zero Dark Thirty, Clint Eastwood’s Flags of Our Fathers) plays Tony; Rez Kempton (Merchant Ivory’s Mystic Masseur, Spooks) plays Amar; and Sam Vincenti (Waking The Dead, Alfie) plays Akbar. Their characters will give the audience a genuine reason to laugh, cry and fall in love. As we follow their lives, the question remains – will their friendship survive the emotional roller coaster that we call life?

Also starring Laura Aikman as Samantha – an attractive jobbing actress who has visions of hitting the big time but settles for small theatre roles in the meantime. Unlike her character, Laura is a familiar face on the big and small screen, and has been appearing in TV and films since childhood, she became a well-known face on the BBC hospital drama Casualty. Laura also starred as Rosie, Keith Lemon’s Geordie girlfriend, in Keith Lemon: The Movie.

The film also features the multi-talented actress and singer-songwriter Karen David - famous for her starring roles in the hit BBC drama Waterloo Road and the Hollywood blockbuster, The Scorpion King 2-Rise of a Warrior. Karen plays Meera, an attractive young woman who arrives from India as a new bride. On the surface things seem fine but her marriage is far from happy and despite the odds, Meera struggles on, resulting in a surprising turn of events.

Karen, who will be getting married in between filming says: "I found the script so endearing and really appreciated the fresh depiction of South Asians. Meera's character is so different from anything I've played, and it will be a wonderful challenge to play her. There are a lot of complex layers in her character. She is mysterious at first, and a lot is going on behind those eyes that you don't find out until later on in the story.
The characters, and the story lines, are definitely going to get people talking!"
Goldy Notay who is best known for her work in Gurinder Chadha’s It’s A Wonderful Afterlife and Sex And The City 2, plays Sonia – Amar’s flirtatious and wayward sister. Her reputation precedes her, but deep down Sonia is the family-orientated girl next door with a heart of gold.

An electrifying supporting cast, featuring special cameo appearances by favourites - Meera Syal (Nigel Cole’s All In Good Time, Goodness Gracious Me), Ace Bhatti (The charismatic Dr. Khan from EastEnders) and Nina Wadia (EastEnders, Doctor Who), will certainly add colour to the film. The eclectic line-up also includes; Amrita Acharia who has most recently been seen in the epic fantasy drama Game Of Thrones and Shide Boss - the British Asian singer/songwriter who turned professional after winning Channel 4’s Hollyoaks Unsigned Music Show.

Director Malhotra’s vision is to represent London culture and explore all its complexities.  He comments: “My vision is to portray on film, the self-assuredness and determination of the multicultural youth of today. There have been so many portrayals of Asian people wanting to escape from their cultural heritage, but I wanted to explore the contrasting angle. The film will embrace the vibrancy and distinctiveness of this influential culture and will wear its Asian heart proudly on its sleeve. My film is a celebration of the bonds that tie us together through friendship, love, loss and ultimately redemption.”
Victoria Wood (Svengali, Queens Of The Cage) produces for Sash Media Productions, UK. Wood says, “I was hooked from the time I first read the script. The film has a massive heart and there is something in it for everyone. And, in Atul, I am proud to introduce a fresh new voice to the world of cinema.”

Filmed on location in and around London and in particular on the famous streets of Southall, home to a thriving and successful Asian community, the film aims to appeal to a wide-ranging audience attracting the forward-thinking, modern generation of film fans across cultural boundaries throughout the UK and worldwide.

A NEW WAVE OF FILMMAKING: HOW AN ACTRESS TURNED FILMMAKER IS CHANGING THE RULES

Three Days short film - teaser trailer
The independent filmmaking community is embracing a new British filmmaker, Vanessa Bailey, a 44 year-old actress who decided to produce her first film, ‘Three Days’, after growing frustrated by the limited roles available for older women. Taking matters into her own hands, Vanessa brought together an award winning crew to produce a film that explores an unconventional romance for a woman over forty, filled with endearingly awkward British humour and subtle emotional depth.

Vanessa’s agent introduced her to an upcoming, young actor, Richard Perryman, and over a cup of coffee, the two discussed developing the script together for ‘Three Days’, an age gap romance about two people from completely different worlds trying not to fall in love with each other. Vanessa’s character, Sophie, wouldn’t normally chase younger men and is a very intelligent woman embarrassed by her feelings for James, played by Richard, who is significantly younger than her. Similarly, James is surprised by his feelings for an older woman and events unfold across three days, which determine whether they will or won’t follow their hearts.

With this close collaboration and their strong screen chemistry, “Three Days’ will present an authentic account of how a younger man and an older woman might find themselves wrestling with their feelings for each other.

Speaking about the scriptwriting process, Vanessa said, “We’ve had the luxury of being able to grow our characters together whilst writing. What’s so great about writing as actors is that you know what you don’t have to write. You know what can just be felt by the actors, and in turn, the audience.”
The film has attracted award-winning crew, including double BAFTA Cymru winning Cinematographer, Huw T Walters, and Darren S Cook, a Cannes 'Coup de Coeur' Award winning Director. Vanessa has also drawn together collaborations with UK indie bands, Wonderlush and Ilya, a London Fashion Week hair designer, Jason Hall, celebrity and film photographer, Gareth Gatrell, as well as attracting BBC composer, William Goodchild to score the film.

The film has been in development for over a year and is due to be filmed this summer in Bromley, Cardiff and central London, pending crowdfunding via Indiegogo, a crowdfunding website that helps independent creative projects raise finance.
Chris Jones, co-author of the world-renowned filmmaking bible, The Guerilla Film Makers Handbook, recently invited Vanessa to contribute a guest article for his blog, highlighting 'Three Days' as an example of actors taking innovative action to produce their own films. Chris comments, “It’s the urge to create that is so powerful, and if actors can channel that in new directions, it will be incredible”.

Vanessa Whyte is one of the directors on the project; she is known for her involvement in Hollywood blockbusters ‘Prometheus’ and ‘X-Men: First Class’, as well as working with Danny Boyle on the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. She also directed acclaimed short ‘A Trick of the Light’. Gary Carse, who has animated music videos for The Prodigy as well some well-known TV title sequences has teamed with Vanessa to direct the short, which will be submitted for a number of exciting competitions over the coming months.

‘Bluebird’ was written by playwright Luke Barnes, who has recently found fame on the US TV hit, ‘Game of Thrones’. Luke was recently at Latitude Festival with his new play ‘Lobsters’, a blistering new one-act play about sex, stagnation and escaping the un-escapable, commissioned as part of PEEP2013.

‘Bluebird’ will be produced by Carse & Waterman Productions, who have created animation sequences for numerous music videos and well-known TV series’.
Daniel Waterman says, “We are thrilled to be creating this wonderful short with such a highly creative team. Not only is everyone involved in the project incredibly creative and dynamic, they also have links to Stoke and the area of Staffordshire, making this a completely home-grown project. We are keen to show London production companies that they do not have the monopoly on short film talent, and we hope ‘Bluebird’ will be the first of many innovative films to come out of Stoke that we create.”

As well as the stellar production team, directors and source material, the acting talent comes from the Staffordshire area too. Tamworth-based actress Margaret Jackman, best known for her role in Anton Corbjin’s Ian Curtis biopic, ‘Control’, will be playing Gramma, and local drama student Ruby Plant, aged six, will be making her acting debut. The sound engineering has been carried out by the Universal Thrift Club Music Studio in Longton, and all sets and filming space were kindly provided by Staffordshire University.

Upon its completion, ‘Bluebird’ will be submitted into the Virgin Shorts Short Film Competition, where the top prize is £30,000 towards the next film from that production company. The next films created by Carse & Waterman Productions will be aiming to raise the profile of the acting talent in Stoke, and put it back on the map when it comes to some of the most creative arts.

BRITISH INDIE FILM LOVE TOMORROW SECURES INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTION
British Director Christopher Payne and Producer Stephanie Moon’s Raindance Festival award-winner LOVE TOMORROW has been picked up by Wonderphil Productions for international sales except UK and Ireland

The film, focusing on a chance meeting between two troubled dancers, stars professional ballet dancers in the lead roles: CINDY JOURDAIN (ex-Royal Ballet soloist) and ARIONEL VARGAS (Principal at English National Ballet). Dancers from the English National Ballet and Rambert Dance Company also appear alongside actors MAX BROWN (The Tudors, Beauty and the Beast) and SAMUEL BARNETT (Bright Star, The History Boys). Michael Nunn and William Trevitt (aka The Ballet Boyz) choreographed some of the dance scenes and co-produced.

Producer of Love Tomorrow, Stephanie Moon said: “We are thrilled about our partnership with Wonderphil. The film is essentially a love story and aimed at fans of the ‘boy meets girl’ genre, but the hook has always been dance. Dance has become such an important and popular part of our culture, not just here in the UK but worldwide and I know that we all understand this.”
Sales Agent Phil Gorn from Wonderphil Productions said: “I loved the film and I know it will do well internationally. The leads are attractive, the story is ultimately uplifting, and it’s not dialogue driven – which should appeal to non-English speakers. A lot of dance movies out there deliver on the choreography but not on the story, LOVE TOMORROW isn’t just beautiful and charming, it also delivers emotionally.”

Director Christopher Payne (The Jolly Boys’ Last Stand), also commented: “I’ve always been a huge fan of the chance encounter love story. When I saw some contemporary dance in London, I realised that dance was the perfect medium to express the turning points of a developing relationship. I was so impressed with how committed the dancers were to the film and now having the opportunity to reach a wide audience is a fitting reward for their faith and hard work.”

Cult horror actor Robert Englund (Nightmare On Elm Street) and Keith Allen (Vinyl, Shallow Grave) join a strong cast of rising British stars Finn Jones (Game of Thrones), Vogue’s ‘one to watch’ Emily Berrington (The White Queen) and 2013 Screen International Stars of Tomorrow Malachi Kirby (Gone Too Far).

The Philm Company was established in 2006 by Phil Hawkins to produce strong, character led stories that give a fresh take on commercial genres. Their third feature, the comedy Being Sold, won Best Actor and Best Film at The 2011 London Independent Film Awards and to date they have raised the maximum equity through the SEIS scheme to create a development fund for their production slate, that includes Baptism, based on the novel by Max Kinnings, and Killing the Shadows, an adaptation of Val McDermid’s novel of the same name.

STARS OF BBC’S HORRIBLE HISTORIES TO MAKE SHAKESPEARE COMEDY FILM
BBC Films is bringing the BAFTA-winning stars of hit BBC kids show ‘Horrible Histories’ to the big screen in BILL, a new comedy film about Shakespeare – or how Bill became William.
Shooting later this year in the UK, BILL is a Cowboy Films / Punk Cinema production for BBC Films and stars the six lead ‘Horrible Histories’ cast - Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond. All will play multiple roles in BILL, in the style of the Python films.

BILL is an original script by Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond, developed with BBC Films and Richard Bracewell (The Gigolos), who will direct. Producers are Charles Steel at Cowboy Films (The Last King of Scotland, How I Live Now) and Tony Bracewell and Richard Bracewell at Punk Cinema. Joe Oppenheimer at BBC Films will executive produce.

BILL tells the story of how hopeless lute player Bill Shakespeare leaves his family and home to follow his dream. It’s a tale of murderous kings, spies, lost loves, and a plot to blow up Queen Elizabeth.  Can one man prove the quill is mightier than the sword?.
Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond said: “BILL is a comedy adventure for all the family. We're playing with history, just as Shakespeare did, for the entertainment of the audience. And we like to think he'd be OK with it. Apart from the bit where he's dressed as a tomato."

“We’re thrilled that BBC Films is making the first film starring this team of incredibly talented and popular British comedy writers and performers,” comments Christine Langan, Head of BBC Films. “‘Horrible Histories’ has been a terrific success and is hugely popular with both kids and their parents. BILL will be a film for all the family to enjoy with original British talent telling a very funny story about Shakespeare.”

BILL ODDIE EVICTED FROM HSBC HQ WHILE PROTESTING AGAINST BANK’S ROLE IN MALAYSIAN RAINFOREST DESTRUCTION
Naturalist and comedian Bill Oddie has been filmed being evicted from HSBC’s London headquarters while protesting against the bank’s business ties to companies that are illegally destroying rainforests and abusing human rights in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo.
Oddie has teamed up with the campaign group Global Witness to expose how the UK’s biggest bank has made almost £100 million by providing loans and services to some of the most destructive logging companies in the world, in violation of the bank’s own policies. The short film pokes fun at the bank’s hypocrisy, but its message is deadly serious. A public petition launched alongside the film calls on HSBC CEO Stuart Gulliver to end the bank’s relationship with the companies destroying Borneo’s last virgin rainforests.

“HSBC has made an absolute killing helping some of the world’s worst logging companies get off the ground,” said Oddie. “According to HSBC’s own rules and all the evidence, it shouldn’t be touching them with a bargepole. As a result the last of Borneo’s rainforests are under immediate threat.  Everyone needs to sign the petition to stop HBSC profiting from deforestation in Malaysia and beyond, before it’s too late.”.

Mimicking the style of a nature documentary, the film – titled Bill Oddie’s BankWatch – studies a new species known as the “HSBC banker” in its natural habitat in London’s Canary Wharf.  Oddie is filmed in HSBC’s headquarters lambasting the bank’s activities in Malaysia, before being forcibly ejected from the premises.

Global Witness investigations have shown how HSBC provided loans and services to logging companies with close ties to Sarawak’s Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud. Taib has ruled the state for over three decades and controls all land allocation and forestry licencing, and is widely understood to abuse this power to enrich his family and associates. The companies have been at the forefront of a timber and palm oil bonanza that has left less than five per cent of Sarawak’s rainforests unaffected by logging or plantations.
Taib is currently under investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. By providing services to a sector notorious for corruption and high-level political links, HSBC is at serious risk of violating international anti-money laundering regulations which require it to carry out extra checks on clients linked to senior politicians.

The Global Witness petition, launched in conjunction with 38 Degrees, calls on HSBC to hold its hands up to its wrongdoing, drop the clients in question and fix its forest policies and compliance procedures so that its investments do not finance this kind of abuse in future.

“It’s high time our banks stop saying one thing while doing the exact opposite. You would think after all the scandals HSBC has been caught up in of late they’d learn to start telling us the truth,” said Oddie. “I made a stand in its HQ because customers and shareholders need to know what is going on. Watch the film – it’s funny, but the message is no laughing matter; HSBC must stop bankrolling the world’s worst logging companies.

AWARD WINNING MORE THAN HONEY NARRATED BY JOHN HURT GETS A UK RELEASE
Over the past fifteen years, numerous colonies of bees have been decimated throughout the world. The causes of this disaster haven't yet been established. Depending on the regions of the world concerned, between 50% and 90% of the bees have disappeared.Romeo And Juliet will be released on 11th October.

The Establishing Shot: MORE THAN HONEY TRAILER - 6 SEPTEMBER 2013
This epidemic, of colossal violence and breadth, is spreading from beehive to beehive all over the planet. Everywhere, the same scenario is repeated: billions of bees leave their hives, never to return. No bodies are found in the immediate surroundings. No visible predators. In a few months, the bees have thus literally been vanishing in the US, where the latest estimates are that a total of 1.5 million (out of 2.4 million total beehives) have disappeared in 27 states. In Germany, according to the national bee-keepers association, one fourth of the colonies have been decimated, with losses reaching up to 80% in some farms. The same phenomenon has been observed in Switzerland, France, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Austria, Poland and England, where the syndrome has been baptised "the Mary Celeste Phenomenon", after the name of the ship whose crew had vanished in 1872.

Scientists have found a name for the phenomenon that matches its scale: "colony collapse disorder". They have good reason to be worried: 80% of plant species need bees to be pollinated.
Without them, no pollination  hence practically no fruits or vegetables. Three thirds of the cultures that feed humanity depend on them. Apis mellifera (honey bee) appeared on Earth 60 million years before man and is as indispensable to the economy as it is to man's survival.

Should we incriminate pesticides and the medication used to combat them? Parasites such as varroa mites? New viruses? Travelling stress? The multiplication of electromagnetic waves disturbing the magnetite nanoparticles found in the bees' abdomen? It seems that it is rather a combination of all these agents that has been destroying the bees' immune defences.

Fifty years ago, Einstein had already insisted on the dependence relation that bound the pollen gatherers to mankind: "If bees were to disappear from the globe," he had predicted, "mankind would only have four years left to live.".

Bollywood sensation Ranbir Kapoor will assume the guise of a cheeky chappy in his latest film incarnation as a car mechanic with a big heart and a penchant for petty theft in the comedy film of the year Besharam (Shameless), releasing 2nd October 2013 through Reliance Entertainment.

Besharam marks the first film to feature Ranbir Kapoor with his parents, screen legends Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh. The film also stars Pallavi Sharda who made her debut in My Name is Khan and comedy king-pin Javed Jaffery.

It is directed by the accomplished Abhinav Kashyap, who previously directed the blockbuster Dabangg. The musical score comes from popular film composer Lalit Pandit responsible for memorable scores for mega cinematic hits such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Dabangg.

Ranbir Kapoor plays ‘Babli’, a street smart, fun-loving, football-playing car mechanic who has seen the dark side of life as one of India’s many desolate orphan children.
The worldly-wise Babli learnt at a young age how to survive the trauma of having no one to care for him. He grew up fast in a Delhi orphanage and has devoted his life to helping and mentoring the other children in the shelter. The cheeky and fiercely independent Babli takes as his life motto: "Na Samaan Ka Moh, Na Apmaan ka Bhay", translated as "No Want for Respect, No Fear of Disrespect".  The film unfolds his many ‘besharam’ moments with hilarious consequences.

Babli has no sense of right or wrong till he unwittingly hurts the love of his life, Tara (Pallavi Sharda). Babli realises that there is no right way of doing the wrong thing. He sets out to fix all the wrongs in his life but continues to be shameless as he does so. But his parents Inspectors Chulbul Chautala  (Rishi Kapoor) and Bulbul Chautala (Neetu Kapoor) are after him to mend his mischievous ways.

Written by Jon Spaihts (PROMETHEUS), the story revolves around a spacecraft transporting human cargo to a distant colony planet that malfunctions causing one passenger (Reeves) to prematurely thaw from a cryogenic slumber nearly a century before anyone else. Faced with the prospect of growing old and dying alone, he decides to wake up a second passenger, marking the beginning of what becomes a unique love story.

EMMY and BAFTA nominated Brian Kirk has directed extensively for television and his credits include HBO’s award winning Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and Luck, and the Emmy award-winning mini-series Great Expectations which received 7 BAFTA and 5 EMMY nominations.  Kirk also directed the pilot for the BBC’s acclaimed Luther starring Idris Elba who won a Golden Globe for his performance.

“PASSENGERS has found the perfect home at Exclusive Media, one of the leading international sales companies.  They produce and represent some of the very best in independent film projects and we could not be happier to have them as part of our team,” said Ben Browning.  “This is a very special film - Reese Witherspoon and Keanu Reeves are two of the most versatile and talented actors working today and together they will be electric.  Brian Kirk is one of the most sought after directors of the moment, having helmed some of the signature television shows in recent history.  Brian is strong on performance, skilled with narrative, and confident in rich and original world creation. We are excited to have Exclusive Media helping bring this film to life,” he continued.

“I have loved this script since I first read it.  It is a fresh and original concept with a wonderful love story at the core.  Reese and Keanu are magnetic actors– put them together and you have a golden ticket. Audiences worldwide are going to love this film,” said Alex Walton.
Reese Witherspoon won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of June Carter opposite Joaquin Phoenix in James Mangold’s WALK THE LINE.  One of Hollywood’s leading actresses, she has over 40 credits to her name including PLEASANTVILLE alongside Tobey Maguire, Alexander Payne’s ELECTION (for which she received a Golden Globe nomination), box office hit LEGALLY BLONDE (also received a Golden Globe nomination) and SWEET HOME ALABAMA, which went on to gross over $100 million dollars at the box office.

With over 70 credits to his name, Keanu Reeves has worked with some of Hollywood’s most respected filmmakers including Ron Howard, Stephen Frears and Gus Van Sant.  Best known for his role as Neo in the Wachowski sibling’s blockbuster MATRIX trilogy, Reeves has also starred in studio box office hits SPEED, POINT BREAK, SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE and MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO.

In recent years Browning’s Wayfare Entertainment has financed and produced Universal’s SANCTUM along with James Cameron, Focus Features IT’S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY starring Zach Galifianakis and Emma Roberts, Neil Jordan’s ONDINE starring Colin Farrell and Sebastian Cordero’s upcoming EUROPA REPORT starring Sharlto Copley.  Browning is also producing an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s THE GRAVEYARD BOOK for Disney.  Wayfare is a holding of Start Media, a privately held media company that also has interests in exhibition, publishing, and technology
After Jon Spaihts’ script for PASSENGERS was included on the 2007 Black List, he was commissioned by Scott Free Productions to write Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS which was released by Twentieth Century Fox.  For New Regency, Spaihts wrote the screenplay to the alien invasion thriller THE DARKEST HOUR, based on a story by Leslie Bohem and M.T. Ahern and was released by Summit Entertainment in 2011.He is currently engaged in a two-picture deal at Jerry Bruckheimer Films to adapt Ashley Wood's graphic novel World War set to be released in 2014.

BRIT ACTOR ART MALIK MAKES HIS BOLLYWOOD DEBUT IN BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG - BASED ON THE LIFE STORY OF INDIA'S 1ST HERO - OLYMPIAN MILKHA SINGH
In true Olympic spirit, athlete Milkha Singh, aka ‘The Flying Sikh’ is set to achieve new feats once again when his incredible life story is given the silver screen treatment in Viacom18 Motion Pictures’ film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, releasing on 12th July 2013 through Viacom18 Motion Pictures Bhaag Milkha Bhaag releases worldwide on 12th July 2013

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag English Poster ZOOM
Many recall Milkha Singh as a world champion in the 400 meters, who infamously lost the penultimate race of his life - the 400 meters final at the Rome Olympics - but won in LIFE.

Milkha Singh's life is a portrait of professional triumph over personal tragedy. The film attempts to understand a catastrophic loss that was deemed a sure victory and explores through the darkness of disgrace Milkha Singh’s redemption and catharsis that came when he confronted his past.
This iridescent tale winds through the plagues of a bloody civil war where Milkha's family were brutally killed during the tumultuous India-Pakistan Partition era resulting in a lost childhood, homelessness, a life of petty crime, right through to victories hard won and easily lost.

The film draws an intricate image of human trials, setbacks and fate leveraged against the sheer power of will as Milkha Singh evocatively illustrates that true victory lies in racing with one’s troubles and not in running away from them.
The film stars India's most versatile multi-star, the critically acclaimed actor, producer, singer, writer, director and musician Farhan Akhtar [Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Luck By Chance] who essays the role of Milkha Singh for what is described as Farhan's most demanding performance to date.

He is joined by Sonam Kapoor [Saawariya, I Hate Luv Storys, Aisha (Indian version of Jane Austen's classic Emma)], Art Malik [BBC1's Holby City], Rebecca Breeds [Home and Away] and is directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra (director of the Bafta nominated film Rang De Basanti, Delhi-6).
The inspirational story is penned by Prasoon Joshi and the soundtrack is composed by the award-winning trio Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag will see Milkha fly, fall and rise, bruise his soul but not his will to survive.

DIRECTOR CHANGES FILM TITLE TO HONOUR NIKOLA TESLA’S BIRTHDAY
TESLA The most talked-about film in the Balkans will shoot in the USA and Serbia

The overwhelming reception for his forthcoming biopic about Nikola Tesla has led American director Michael Anton to deliver a new name to sum up the iconic nature of the man and his unique legacy. The new title for the most talked-about film in Serbia reflects the iconic nature of the great man and his legacy.

“Nikola Tesla does not need a controversial label,’ said director Michael Anton. “The fact that his name is not as familiar as it should be is one of the issues we intend to address with this film, which has progressed from a strong script with a modest budget into a potential voice that will finally break the great silence that is the history of Nikola Tesla.
“From now on, this film will be simply titled TESLA. Nothing more, nothing less.”

The announcement was made at the R:brand Serbia Conference in a statement shared by Aleksandra Drecun, director of the Republic of Serbia Centre for the Promotion of Science. The conference in Novi Sad, attended by Serbia’s Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić, is part of the world famous EXIT festival, which attracts an international audience of many tens of thousands.

“Tesla was a man of his generation. Many consider him to have invented the twentieth century,’ Michael said in a statement. “His story must not be kept from the rest of the world. Tesla deserves to have a voice not only among the American people, but with everyone. Tesla sets an example for all of us. He showed that we are capable of unimaginable things as long as we believe in the impossible.”

SERBIAN ACTRESS MIRJANA KARANOVIĆ JOINS CAST OF NIKOLA TESLA BIOPIC
Celebrated Serbian actress Mirjana Karanović (Grbavica/Esma’s Sectret) has joined the cast of TESLA, the Nikola Tesla biopic that is scheduled to shoot in Serbia and the United States, in the autumn. She will play Djuka, the hardworking Serbian mother who had a big influence on the inventive instincts of the young Nikola.

“It is quite a small role in the film, but Djuka played a very significant role in the life of Nikola Tesla,’ said Mirjana. “She helped to define who he was. It really is an honour for me to play this hardworking woman who brought up such a strong and interesting family.”

From the moment Mirjana read American director Michael Anton’s script for the film, she knew this was the role of Georgina-Djuka Mandić (Tesla) was one that she must play. “When I was approached about this role, I was very moved by the wonderful script, by the way each character is portrayed with such integrity,’ she said.

“Michael has produced a film that is a tribute to Nikola Tesla. We are telling his story as it happened, without the silly stories that Tesla can attract. Michael has maintained the authenticity. This film should finally make the world aware of the great man and all that he did for us in our lives today.”

HRISTINA POPOVIĆ JOINS AN AWARD-WINNING CAST FOR NIKOLA TESLA BIOPIC
Acclaimed star of Circles & The Parade will play Nikola Tesla’s sister. Director adds star of Sundance Film Festival hit Circles to a cast of award winners.

Hristina Popović, the acclaimed star of celebrated films Circles and The Parade (Parada), has signed up to the glowing cast of Nikola Tesla biopic, TESLA. Hristina, who has become a familiar name at international film festivals for lauded roles in some of the Balkans biggest movies, will play Tesla’s sister Angelina.
Most recently, Hristina, aged 31, has impressed audiences and critics for her role in Circles / Krugovi, from director Srdjan Golubović. As well as being awarded at the Berlin Film Festival, this film based on the tragic story of a young Bosnian Serb Srdjan Aleksić, won the Audience Award at the Sofia International Film Festival, and the Special Jury Prize at America’s Sundance Film Festival.

While Tesla is one of the world’s greatest scientists, responsible for some of the most significant discoveries, his name remains unfamiliar to many outside of his Balkan homelands. Director Michael Anton aims to put that right with a script that sheds light on the Serb scientist’s time in the US and explores his relationship with Thomas Edison.

SERBIAN ACTRESS MARIJA KARAN SIGNS UP TO TESLA, THE MOST TALKED-ABOUT FILM IN THE BALKANS
Serbian star of The Rite and Assassination Games joins acclaimed Serb actors Branko Tomović, Mirjana Karanović and Hristina Popović

Serbian actress Marija Karan will embody the feelings of the many women who fell for the charms of celebrated Serb scientist Nikola Tesla, when she joins the cast of the biopic, TESLA.

Marija is well known in her native Serbia as an actress who has been made a star through a string of domestic and international film and TV roles.

“I am eager to start shooting on this film about our most prominent scientist,’ said Marija, who will shoot her scenes in Serbia, with dialogue in Serbian. “Michael Anton has written a script that is authentic and honest. I like that he felt a need to understand the importance of Tesla’s origin as an immigrant in the US who, despite all problems, remained true to himself and persistent. This is not a typical American film.”

In the film, produced by Silvermask Films, Marija will play Braka, an amalgam character based on various real women. “In my research of Tesla I found a great conflict when it came to the idea of marriage, or even relationships for that matter,’ said director Michael Anton.

“He viewed them as a grand distraction providing an inventor with barriers that would inhibit him from reaching his highest potential. With that said, his good looks and fame made him susceptible to the interest of many potential female suitors, although it appeared he never changed his resolve on the matter.”

CAMERAS ROLL ON THE WACHOWSKIS’ NEW SCI-FI ADVENTURE JUPITER ASCENDING
CHANNING TATUM AND MILA KUNIS STAR
Filming is underway on Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ “Jupiter Ascending,” an original science fiction epic adventure from filmmakers Lana and Andy Wachowski.  Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in the film, which began shooting at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.

From the streets of Chicago to far flung galaxies whirling through space, “Jupiter Ascending” was conceived and written by the Wachowskis, who are also directing.  Award-winning producer Grant Hill, with whom the writer/directors have collaborated since “The Matrix” Trilogy, is producing the film together with the Wachowskis.  Roberto Malerba and Bruce Berman are serving as executive producers.

Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things.  Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning toilets and an endless run of bad breaks.

Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

Channing Tatum (“Magic Mike”) and Mila Kunis (“Oz the Great and Powerful”) lead an international cast that also includes Sean Bean (“The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy),
Eddie Redmayne (“Les Misérables”), Douglas Booth (“LOL”), Tuppence Middleton (TV’s “The Lady Vanishes”), Doona Bae (“Cloud Atlas”), James D’Arcy (“Hitchcock”) and Tim Pigott-Smith (“Alice in Wonderland”).

Behind the scenes, “Jupiter Ascending” reunites the Wachowskis with their longstanding collaborators, who most recently worked with them on “Cloud Atlas.”  They include Oscar®-winning cinematographer John Toll (“Braveheart,” “Legends of the Fall”); production designer Hugh Bateup; editor Alexander Berner; costume designer Kym Barrett; and makeup and hair designer Jeremy Woodhead.  “Jupiter Ascending” will showcase the kind of cutting-edge visual effects that have become the benchmarks of the Wachowskis’ films.  Dan Glass (“Batman Begins,” “Cloud Atlas”) is the film’s visual effects supervisor, a post he has occupied for the Wachowskis since “The Matrix” Trilogy.  Additionally, John Gaeta, the visual effects Oscar® winner behind “The Matrix,” is contributing to the visual effects design.

The production will shoot in the UK before moving to Chicago for completion.

“Jupiter Ascending” will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

THE INSIDE LINE ON JAMES HUNT AND HIS CAR AHEAD OF UPCOMING HOLLYWOOD BIOPIC
As Rush is released into cinemas, two new books offer an unrivalled insight into the legendary driver James Hunt and the iconic McLaren M23 that he drove to the 1976 F1 World Championship title.
Memories of James Hunt
Memories of James Hunt ZOOM
The upcoming film focuses on Hunt’s battle with Niki Lauda for the 1976 World Championship, and is directed by two-times Academy award-winning director Ron Howard (director of A Beautiful Mind and Apollo 13) and written by Peter Morgan, writer of The Queen and Frost/Nixon.

The McLaren M23 is one of the most iconic F1 cars of all time, and the McLaren M23 Owners’ Workshop Manual from Haynes Publishing offers a unique insight into one of the four-wheeled stars of the movie.

The book sets out the McLaren M23’s place in F1 history, describing in detail, with the aid of numerous photographs and drawings, the construction and development of the car, and profiling the men who drove it. The M23’s subsequent historic-racing career is also covered, including the role of several examples in Rush, with the thoughts of current owners and details of how the cars are maintained today.

Jochen Mass, James Hunt’s former team-mate at McLaren, returned to the seat of his former car to film some of the racing scenes for the film.
Mass remembers James Hunt as ‘an eccentric’ in another Haynes book released this June, Memories of James Hunt. The book offers honest, frank and revealing insights into Hunt from those that knew him best, including his rival for the 1976 Championship, Niki Lauda.

In the book, Lauda says of Hunt:

‘He had charisma... He would not have allowed people to tell him what to do or how to behave. I was always very disciplined in my life and he had no rules at all!’

Friends, former wives and girlfriends, racing associates, and competitors were all asked for their strongest memories of Hunt, and their colourful mix of answers has resulted in this revealing book, which portrays him as a World Champion, Bohemian, womaniser, budgerigar breeder, a tender father, and an entertaining broadcaster.

NEW FROM ILEX PRESS - THE ART OF MOVIE STORYBOARDS
VISUALISING THE ACTION OF THE WORLD’S GREATEST FILMS Available October 2013
The Art Of Movie Storyboards
The Art Of Movie Storyboards ZOOM
The storyboarding of a movie is a fascinating phase in the filmmaking process, where the words in the script are translated into images, and the visual story is witnessed for the first time.

The unsung heroes of film, storyboard artists are the first to give vision to a screenplay, translating words on the page into shots for the screen.

Their work is a unique art form in itself. Many storyboards are beautiful in their own right, but ultimately the skill of the artist lies in their visual communication of a script, with multiple factors to consider: composition, movement, camera angles, special effects, and the rhythm and pacing of a scene.

Giving prominence to the best storyboard artists from the last 70 years, The Art of Movie Storyboards gives the reader a behind-the-scenes glimpse of some of the greatest movies of all time. The collection includes the work of pioneers such as William Cameron Menzies (Gone with the Wind) and Saul Bass (Psycho, Spartacus) as well contemporaries uch as Raul Monge (Pan’s Labyrinth) and Jane Clark (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire). Many are seen here for the first time, and all are accompanied by insights from the designers, directors and artists – enough to delight any movie fan.
- The first book to give storyboard art the treatment it deserves

- Packed with never-before-seen images from some of the world’s most iconic films

- Includes beautiful illustrations and directors’ roughs

The Art of Movie Storyboards celebrates this art, showcasing a vast collection of storyboards in a range of styles, and including some of cinema’s greatest moments. The collection includes the work of pioneers such as William Cameron Menzies (Gone with the Wind) and Saul Bass (Psycho, Spartacus), as well as contemporaries such as Raúl Monge (Pan’s Labyrinth) and Jane Clark (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire). Many are seen here for the first time, and all are accompanied by insights into the films featured, their directors, and, of course, the storyboard artists.

In 1921 Florence Cathcart (Rebecca Hall) is living in post-war England where many people are seeking solace and comfort in the mystical and spiritual. Haunted by the death of her fiancé, Florence is committed to debunking supernatural claims, using methodical and rational explanations. When she is asked to visit a boarding school in the countryside called Rookwood - to investigate the alleged sightings of a ghostly young boy - she feels compelled to take the job.

Gradually secrets begin to unravel and the mystery surrounding the ghost appears nothing more than a schoolboy prank. As Florence is set to leave, however, she experiences a chilling encounter that defies all reason. Determined to get to the bottom of it Florence remains over the Christmas holidays with the headmaster Robert Mallory (Dominic West), the matron Maud (Imelda Staunton) and one student Tom (Isaac Hempstead- Wright).
Over the coming days the blurred image of a child-like ghost haunts Florence and she begins to doubt her resolve, increasingly unable to provide any logical explanation for the bizarre goings-on. As her bond with Mallory deepens, they are drawn to one another by their shared sense of loneliness and together they ready themselves to face their demons.

Directed by Nick Murphy and written by Stephen Volk and Nick Murphy, The Awakening stars Rebecca Hall, Dominic West, Imelda Staunton, and Isaac Hempstead-Wright.
