A couple of weeks ago I was fortunate enough to catch an early preview of Your Highness introduced by Danny McBride. After the screening Danny McBride & Rasmus Hardiker did a QA session hosted by T4’s Rick Edwards.

Your Highness
Throughout history, tales of chivalry have burnished the legends of brave, handsome knights who rescue fair damsels, slay dragons and conquer evil. But behind many a hero is a good-for-nothing younger brother trying just to stay out of the way of those dragons, evil and trouble in general. Danny McBride and James Franco team up for an epic comedy adventure set in a fantastical world.

As two princes on a daring mission to save their land, they must rescue the heir apparent's fiancée before their kingdom is destroyed. Thadeous (McBride) has spent his life watching his perfect older brother Fabious (Franco) embark upon valiant journeys and win the hearts of his people. Tired of being passed over for adventure, adoration and the throne, he's settled for a life of wizard's weed, hard booze and easy maidens. But when Fabious' bride-to-be, Belladonna (Zooey Deschanel), gets kidnapped by the evil wizard Leezar (Justin Theroux) the king gives his deadbeat son an ultimatum: Man up and help rescue her or get cut off. Half-assedly embarking upon his first quest, Thadeous joins Fabious to trek across the perilous outlands and free the princess. Joined by Isabel (Natalie Portman)-an elusive warrior with a dangerous agenda of her own-the brothers must vanquish horrific creatures and traitorous knights before they can reach Belladonna. If Thadeous can find his inner hero, he can help his brother prevent the destruction of his land. Stay a slacker, and not only does he die a coward, he gets front row seats to the dawn of an all-new Dark Ages.
Danny McBride wrote, produced & stars as jealous slacker brother Thadeus in Your Highness and Rasmus Hardiker plays his hard pressed Black Adder'esk upon man servant Courtney.

In all honesty the film wasn’t really my bag. I love the swords & sandals genre and although I laughed a lot I struggled with the film veering from slapstick to serious action film. Hopefully it will be a slow burn and it’s appreciation will grow when it hits the DVD home market. Anyway here is a compilation clip of the QA session, which is worth watch for insight into film-making.

The clip is as follows:

1. 00:15 - Danny McBride Introduces Your Highness
Your Highness is our homage to those crazy fantasy movies of the 80s. Things like; Krull, Conan The Barbarian, The Beastmaster, classics.

To me the only thing I thought that was missing from those films was tons of marijuana, cuss words and naked women. So we have tried to fill that gap here.

If you are offended easily I apologise now. Get ready for a filthy time. Thanks for coming out here tonight I appreciate it.

2. 00:43 - Is there such a think as too many dick Jokes?
3. 00:53 - Do you enjoy watching the film with other people Danny?
4. 1:13 - When putting the film together, did you have any limits? Because the phrase “we jerked the wizard off” is not something you hear very often. Did you have any things that you thought – that’s too far.
5. 1:50 - How long did it take to get Your Highness made? It sounds like you talk about the idea brewing for a long time.
6. 2:40 - Was there a lot of improve on the set?
7. 4:40 – What was filming in Belfast like?
8. 5:15 – What happened to the Minotaur penis?
9. 5:56 – What is your next project? Amongst other bits. Danny mentions 30 Minutes or less.

30 Minutes or less trailer

10. 6:28 – Was there a lot of competition on the set to out do each other?
11. 7:25 - Talking about warped minds, whose idea was the 5 headed hydra hand monster?
12. 8:30 – What was the thinking behind the girls in the forest?
13. 8:55 – Any advice to stretching or highlighting things to make the most of film budgets?
