A Walk Among The Tombstones“There are 8 million stories in the naked city, remember that old TV Show? You know what we got in this town? We got 8 Million Ways to Die” - so says Detective Matt Scudder (Jeff Bridges) in the opening lines of Hal Ashby’s 1986 crime thriller 8 Million Ways to Die adapted by Oliver Stone and starring Jeff Bridges, Andy Garcia and Rosanna Arquette.

8 Million Ways to Die introduces us to Matt Scudder the hard boiled gumshoe from a popular series of detective stories by Lawrence Block. In 8 Million Ways to Die Matt Scudder is played by Jeff Bridges “who has already failed as a cop and if he fails again it’s her life on the line.”  After a drug bust goes tragically wrong Scudder’s life spirals out of control and he ends up in the deep end of a bottle – before drinking himself out of the frying pan and into the fire.

I enjoyed Matt Scudder's adventure in 8 Million Ways to Die it came out in that period that Jeff Bridges was making some really good Hollywood films. Scudder is an interesting character very at home in the noir genre and I was quite keen to see more of Scudder’s tales of the seedy American underbelly. Well it seems that the time for Matt Scudder to return is upon us and this time he will be played by Liam Neeson - who seems to be building an entire genre around ageing tough guys. There is a trailer for 8 Million Ways to Die below but you can watch the entire film legally on YouTube thanks to Crackle right here!

I have been keeping an ear for it for awhile as an early script originally written with Harrison Ford in mind created a bit of a buzz online, I forgo reading it as I didn’t want to ruin my viewing pleasure, sadly the trail went cold until last when out of the blue Exclusive Media and Cross Creek announced a deal that would see A Walk Amongst The Tombstones coming to our screens.

Written and directed by Scott Frank who made The Lookout and wrote The Wolverine and Minority Report (let's ignore Marley & Me) hopefully A Walk Amongst the Tombstones will be less Taken 2 and a little more like The Grey, a little darker and more cerebral. As well as Neeson it has been reported that Dan StevensRuth Wilson and Boyd Holbrook have joined the cast. If A Walk Amongst The Tombstones is a success we may see another of the 13 Matt Scudder stories come to the screen.

An unlicensed private detective, Matt gets help from his former colleague (Ruth Wilson) and a homeless 17 year-old artist, TJ (Astro.) Operating just outside the law to track down the monsters responsible, Scudder stops just short of becoming one himself.

Following the partnership on Ron Howard’s RUSH, also to be released through Cross Creek’s distribution deal with Universal Pictures, the first film being produced and financed under this new far reaching arrangement is the thriller A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES starring Liam Neeson (TAKEN).  Written and to be directed by Scott Frank (THE LOOKOUT), the film is one of the popular ‘Matt Scudder’ book series written by Lawrence Block.

Double Feature Films partners Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher are producing with Danny DeVito and his company, Jersey Films.  Principal photography is set to start in February 2013 on location in New York City.

“We feel like we won the trifecta by getting the one star who is perfect for Scott’s great script that he was born to direct,” said Shamberg and Sher.

Formerly a cop with the NYPD, now an unlicensed private eye and a recovering alcoholic haunted by past mistakes, Matt Scudder (NEESON) is hired to find the kidnapped wife of a drug dealer.  He operates just outside the law where the police don’t go to track down the kidnappers, who he discovers have been involved in multiple kidnappings and brutal murders.

“We have long enjoyed a fulfilling business partnership with Brian and his team at Cross Creek, creating success with THE IDES OF MARCH, THE WOMAN IN BLACK and now RUSH, among others. We feel very confident to formalise and strengthen our development, financing and production arrangement with Brian and we are thrilled to start this new chapter with such a commercial project,” commented Nigel Sinclair and Guy East

Exclusive Media’s COO Marc Schipper negotiated the development and production deal with Cross Creek’s Brian Oliver.  Tobin Armbrust, Exclusive Media’s President of Worldwide Production and Acquisitions will be overseeing the new relationship.

The arrangement also gives both companies the first opportunity right to co-finance and co-produce pictures outside those set for the Universal pipeline.

In addition to the picture by picture financing responsibilities, both companies are jointly creating a six figure revolving development fund to source additional properties.

Alex Walton, Exclusive Media’s President of International Sales and Distribution will introduce A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES to overseas buyers at the Cannes Film Market.
