To celebrate the home release of Thor: The Dark World, Marvel Studio's have placed a huge replica of Mjolnir, Thor's Hammer for all to see in Greenwich. But hurry as it will only be there till Friday 28 February.Last week I received an email alerting me to the location of Thor's hammer, so over the weekend I grabbed my pants, jumped on the tube at Charing Cross station, jumped off in Greenwich 3 stops later. *Whilst exact travel details are further below pants are optional!

If you like Thor and want to know how you get to Greenwich, TFL can help you with that!
While I was there I checked out the location for Thor: The Dark World's climactic Battle of Greenwich, between Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Malekith's (Christopher Eccleston) evil elf forces that flattened Greenwich, well the Old Royal Naval College anyway.

Malekith didn't just visit Greenwich just because of the great tax breaks for film production or because it is a historical and cultural landmark but Greenwich is the exact point on Earth that is the centre of the Nine Realms when they converge, thusly the perfect place, for Malekith's Aether weapon, one of the six Marvel Universe's sought after infinity stones, to be amplified sufficiently - that it will set off a chain reaction across the Nine Realms terraforming the entire galaxy into the Dark World. Man of Steel much?

We first see the Old Royal Naval College from above as Malekith the Accursed's Eye of Sauron like giant Ark ship descends upon the Thames river before dragging it's way into the Old Royal Naval College grounds prior to the the battle commencing mainly in the grassy Lower Grand Square between the Kings Charles Court & Queen Anne Court close to the river, Upper Grand Square between King William Court & Queen Mary Court (between the ornate columns and underneath Sir Christopher Wren’s twin domes) the cobbled College Way road as well across the Nine Realms accessed through dimension portals. On the day I visited it looked like the sculpture of
The no holds barred battle then commences between Malekith's forces and Thor whilst his comrades; Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård), Jane's intern Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings), and her intern, Ian Boothby (Jonathan Howard) support him with the brainier scientific stuff.

We can also briefly see the interior of The Painted Hall when Jane Foster and Dr. Erik Selvig run through the hall before the windows are seen exploding inwards.

James Bond popped in twice once when M visits the coffins of the fallen agents in Skyfall and earlier in Octopussy when it served as the Russian National Fine Art Repository.
Sherlock Holmes must have ORNC Angelship as he loitered around when the streets doubled for Victorian era London for both of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes films and it even played host to Angelina Jolie's Lara Croft in Tomb Raider when the Painted Hall became the Venice hall for the council of the Illuminati.
Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow got in the action when it doubled for the streets of London as well as Captain Jacks swinging scene was set in the Painted Hall for Pirates Of The Caribbean, On Stranger Tides. Even The Wolverine's Hugh Jackman came to sing here when he starred in Tom Hooper's Les Miserables and it was transformed into the streets of Paris. Henry Cavill will visit in Guy Ritchie's The Man From U.N.C.L.E. soon.
