Posted by Craig Grobler on Google+ On Friday, June 17, 2011

A bumper pack of cinema and home releases this week that includes Superheroes, War, Vampires and Zombies amongst others as well as some I missed from last week while I was away. Reviews will be up shortly.

Age of Heroes - Blu-ray
Age of Heroes is an action-packed British thriller based on the real-life events of Ian Fleming's 30 Commando during World War II - the template for the modern day SAS. Sean Bean (Lord Of The Rings, GoldenEye) and Danny Dyer (The Business, The Football Factory) star in an adrenalin-fuelled action-adventure which takes our heroes from the edge of defeat on the beaches of Dunkirk to the mountains of Norway on a search-and-destroy mission behind enemy lines that, if successful, would change the course of the war.

Director: Adrian Vitoria
Stars: Sean Bean, Izabella Miko and Danny Dyer

Always Kabhi Kabhi
St. Marks is another school full of bright teenagers full of aspirations and looking to make a mark on the world. But being a teen-ager isn't just about school... it's also about love and the craze of one's first-ever crushes. It's the period where everyone is growing up and moving on to the next level. In this competitive, confusing and sometimes cruel world, we follow four characters whose destinies seem to take them on different paths. Somehow, though, they all come together at St. Marks.

Director: Roshan Abbas
Stars: Lillete Dubey, Satyajeet Dubey and Ali Fazal

Animal Kingdom Blu-ray and DVD
Following the death of his mother, the young ‘J’ Cody goes to live with his estranged gangster relatives. With conflict escalating between his family of criminals and the police’s armed robbery division, J finds himself at the centre of a cold-blooded vengeance plot. As he naively navigates his way through the criminal underworld, he is forced to question where his loyalties lie as he tries to decipher who he can trust and who can protect him as he struggles for his own survival.

Director: David Michôd
Stars: James Frecheville, Guy Pearce and Joel Edgerton

Bad Teacher
Some teachers just don’t give an F. For example, there's Elizabeth (Cameron Diaz). She’s foul-mouthed, ruthless, and inappropriate. She drinks, she gets high, and she can’t wait to marry her meal ticket and get out of her bogus day job. When she’s dumped by her fiancé, she sets her plan in motion to win over a rich, handsome substitute (Justin Timberlake) – competing for his affections with an overly energetic colleague, Amy (Lucy Punch). When Elizabeth also finds herself fighting off the advances of a sarcastic, irreverent gym teacher (Jason Segel), the consequences of her wild and outrageous schemes give her students, her coworkers, and even herself an education like no other.

Director: Jake Kasdan
Stars: Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel and Justin Timberlake

The Beaver
A troubled husband and executive adopts a beaver hand-puppet as his sole means of communicating.

Director: Jodie Foster
Stars: Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and Anton Yelchin

The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
The directorial debut of Dario Argento, The Bird With The Crystal Plumage sees the Italian master of terror nailing the “Giallo” blueprint with a brutal thriller that packs a gory brace of horrific murders alongside its genre defining mix of red herrings, leather gloved slashers and stylish decor. A writer is stalked by a serial killer after witnessing a murder attempt on one woman's life.

Director: Dario Argento
Stars: Tony Musante, Suzy Kendall and Enrico Maria Salerno

Born To Be Wild 3D
Academy-Award® winner Morgan Freeman narrates an inspiring story of love, dedication and the remarkable bond between humans and animals. Don't miss this amazing adventure in stunning IMAX 3D.

Born to be loved. Born to be free.

Director: David Lickley
Stars: Birute Galdikas, Daphne Sheldrick and Morgan Freeman

Eaters: Rise Of The Dead - DVD
Presented by cult writer-director-producer Uwe Boll (House Of The Dead; BloodRayne; In The Name Of The King), Eaters: Rise Of The Dead is a smart, stylish and ambitious indie horror movie from first time directors Luca Boni and Marco Ristori. Taking an old-school approach to the genre that thematically and atmospherically recalls the post-apocalyptic terrors of George A. Romero’s classic “Day Of The Dead”, Eaters: Rise Of The Dead combines brains (in every sense of the word!) and gratuitous gore in one neat bloody package that will satisfy even the most demanding zombie movie fans.

Directors: Luca Boni, Marco Ristori
Stars: Rosella Elmi, Guglielmo Favilla and Elisa Ferretti

Green Lantern
A test pilot is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe.

Director: Martin Campbell
Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively and Peter Sarsgaard

Kylie 3D - Aphrodite Les Folies
Filmed over two nights at London’s O2 Arena – this stunning concert film features Kylie’s biggest hits including “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head”, “Spinning Around” and “Slow” – along with tracks from her latest Platinum selling album Aphrodite. From golden chariots, via flying angels to a spectacular water-feature finale - this is an epic show not to be missed

Life in a Day
Life In A Day is a historic global experiment to create the world's largest user-generated feature film: a documentary, shot in a single day, by you. To serve as a time capsule to show future generations what it was like to be alive on the 24th of July, 2010.

On July 24, you have 24 hours to capture a glimpse of your life on camera. The most compelling and distinctive footage will be edited into an experimental documentary film, executive produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Kevin Macdonald.

Director: Kevin Macdonald
Stars: Cindy Baer, Moica and Caryn Waechter

The Messenger
An American soldier struggles with an ethical dilemma when he becomes involved with a widow of a fallen officer.

Director: Oren Moverman
Stars: Ben Foster, Samantha Morton and Woody Harrelson

Potiche
When her husband is taken hostage by his striking employees, a trophy wife (Deneuve) takes the reins of the family business and proves to be a remarkably effective leader. Business and personal complications arrive in the form of her ex-lover (Depardieu), a former union leader

Director: François Ozon
Stars: Catherine Deneuve, Gérard Depardieu and Fabrice Luchini

Putty Hill
A young man's untimely death unites a fractured family and their community through shared memory and loss.

Director: Matthew Porterfield
Stars: Sky Ferreira, Cody Ray and Dustin Ray

The Round Up
A faithful retelling of the 1942 "Vel' d'Hiv Roundup" and the events surrounding it. 1942. Joseph is eleven. And this June morning, he must go to school, a yellow star sown on his chest. He receives the support of a goods dealer. The mockery of a baker. Between kindness and contempt, Jo, his Jewish friends, their families, learn of life in an occupied Paris, on the Butte Montmartre, where they've taken shelter.

At least that's what they think, until that morning on July 16th 1942, when their fragile happiness is toppled over. From the Vélodrome D'Hiver, where 13 000 Jews are crammed, to the camp of Beaune-La-Rolande, from Vichy to the terrace of the Berghof, THE ROUND-UP follows the real destinies of the victims and the executioners. Of those who orchestrated it all. Of those who trusted them. Of those who fled. Of those who opposed them.

Director: Rose Bosch
Stars: Jean Reno, Mélanie Laurent and Gad Elmaleh

Stake Land
Martin was a normal teenage boy before the country collapsed in an empty pit of economic and political disaster. A vampire epidemic has swept across what is left of the nation's abandoned towns and cities, and it's up to Mister, a death dealing, rogue vampire hunter, to get Martin safely north to Canada, the continent's New Eden

Director: Jim Mickle
