This Week On The Establishing Shot:
The Establishing Shot: Full The Dark Knight Rises Prologue analysis and thoughts from a true Batman fan
I've been getting a couple of requests for my thoughts on The Dark Knight Rises prologue, a couple, from guys nowhere near an IMAX so below I’ve tried to give as much detail as I can. My post is split into 3 segments; the first outlining why The Dark Knight Rises could be good, the second running through the footage of the prologue and 1 minute montage from The Dark Knight Rises with commentary and the third some thoughts. So you can skip to the bits that interest you.

Seven years after the Auguste and Louis Lumière (the Lumière Brothers) had invented and patented the first film projector. Hopefully I'll have the full AIR QA up soon.

Goon gets a new trailer
Meet Doug Glatt (Seann William Scott). He may not be the sharpest blade on the rink, but he’s got a killer right hook. When his permanently wasted best friend Pat (Jay Baruchel) runs into trouble, Doug’s ability to beat the crap out of everyone and everything impresses a sports coach who signs him up to annihilate the opposition and a feisty female fan (Alison Pill) who digs dangerous sports

Sometimes it takes an unlikely hero to unite a team and soon Doug finds himself recruited by the flailing Halifax Highlanders, who desperately need a goon to protect their screwed up ex-star player, La Flamme. In between packing punches and breaking bones, the team bond and find their place in the big league.

But when Doug comes fist to face with notoriously violent pro player Rhea (Liev Schreiber) who is hell bent on putting on a show for his retirement fight, the gloves are well and truly off….

From the creators of Superbad and Pineapple Express comes an ice cool comedy that proves that it’s not the winning, it’s the taking apart of the other team that counts. From the creators of Superbad and Pineapple Express comes an ice cool comedy that proves that it’s not the winning, it’s the taking apart of the other team that counts.

Summer In February Shooting January 2012
A true tale of love, liberty and scandal amongst the Edwardian artists’ colony
in Cornwall. Dominic Cooper (The Devil’s Double) stars as AJ (later Sir Alfred) Munnings, with Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) as Gilbert Evans and Ophelia Lovibond (Mr Popper’s Penguins) as Florence Carter-Wood in CrossDay/Apart Films’ love story SUMMER IN FEBRUARY, which is scheduled to commence principal photography in January 2012.

Adapted from his own novel by Jonathan Smith, SUMMER IN FEBRUARY, which also stars Hattie Morahan (The Bank Job) as impressionist painter (Dame) Laura Knight, will be directed by Christopher Menaul (Prime Suspect) and produced by CrossDay’s Pippa Cross and Janette Day (Vanity Fair) and Apart Films’ Jeremy Cowdrey, with Bob Benton and Dan Stevens as executive producers.

The Newlyn School of artists flourished at the beginning of the 20th Century and the film focuses on the wild and bohemian Lamorna Group, which included Alfred Munnings and Laura and Harold Knight. The incendiary anti-Modernist Munnings, now regarded as one of Britain’s most sought-after artists, is at the centre of the complex love triangle, involving aspiring artist Florence Carter-Wood and Gilbert Evans, the land agent in charge of the Lamorna Valley estate. True – and deeply moving – the story is played out against the timeless beauty of the Cornish coast, in the approaching shadow of The Great War.

Sky Announces Further Ground Breaking 3d Project With Sir David Attenborough
Galapagos 3D sees naturalist explore remote islands in stunning 3D. Following on from the BAFTA-winning Flying Monsters 3D and the soon to premiere Bachelor King 3D (Sky 3D, New Year’s Eve, 8pm), David Attenborough is to embark on his fourth 3D project with Sky, a three-part natural history series which tells the story of the remote Galapagos islands.

Galapagos 3D, which is scheduled to air on Sky 3D in late 2012, will be written and presented by Attenborough and is the first film to be produced by Colossus Productions - the production company formed by Sky and Atlantic Productions this summer.  The joint venture was created to develop original 3D programming for UK and International audiences, including the rapidly growing number of Sky 3D homes.  The commission is part of Sky’s commitment to increase its investment in UK originated content by 50% to £600million a year by 2014, to cement its position as one of the biggest investors in the UK’s creative economy.

Galapagos 3D follows several successful collaborations between Sky and Atlantic Productions, including the BAFTA-winning Flying Monsters 3D, The Bachelor King 3D (which airs on Sky 3D on New Year’s Eve) and Kingdom of Plants 3D, a series based at Kew Gardens (due to air on Sky 3D next year).

David Attenborough commented: “Galapagos is one of the most wonderful places in the world. There are extraordinary creatures living there that live nowhere else – a whole slew of marvellous animals. But one of the things that make them even more extraordinary is that because the islands were not discovered by human beings until relatively recently, and they had remained isolated for so long, the animals still haven’t become frightened of human beings. You can walk among them carrying your own snap shot cameras or even carrying a 3D rig and they won’t go away. They continue behaving in just the way that they would do naturally. Galapagos is full of drama, full of charismatic creatures which you can film; it is a natural for 3D.”

John Cassy, Director, Sky 3D, adds:  “The Galapagos is one of Earth's greatest treasures but it is unreachable for the vast majority of us. 3D will bring the islands to life for our customers in a way that has never been possible before. Sir David and Atlantic Productions are the natural partners to take on this ambitious project on - and ensure our natural history programming continues to break new ground.”

Executive Producer, CEO of Atlantic Productions and Co-Founder of Colossus Productions, Anthony Geffen adds: “We are very excited to be making our first 3D project at Colossus Productions – it is our most ambitious yet and will involve micro and macro filming on location and state-of-the art 3D visual effects which will peel away the Earth’s surface and shed light on the hidden forces that have built and shaped the islands.”

Since launching Sky 3D in October 2010 Sky has broken new ground across a range of genres, including natural history, live music, the arts, spots and movies.  Highlights have included Flying Monsters 3D, a number of summer music festival, opera and ballet, Kylie Minogue live from the O2, Got to Dance, the 3D TV world premieres of Avatar, Alice in Wonderland and the Toy Story Trilogy as well as more than 150 live sports broadcast spanning a range of domestic and international sports.

The Expendables 2 - teaser trailer released
Uniting the biggest action star cast ever seen on screen, The Expendables 2 brings the iconic stars of the first film together with new additions including Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme for the most epic action extravaganza ever, set for UK cinema release in August 2012.

Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), Lee Christmas (Lee Statham), Yin Yang (Jet Li), Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren),Toll Road (Randy Couture) and Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) -- with newest members Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth) and Maggie (Yu Nan) aboard -- are reunited when Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) enlists the Expendables to take on a seemingly simple job.

The task looks like an easy paycheck for Barney and his band of old-school mercenaries. But when things go wrong and one of their own is viciously killed, the Expendables are compelled to seek revenge in hostile territory where the odds are stacked against them. Hell-bent on payback, the crew cuts a swath of destruction through opposing forces, wreaking havoc and shutting down an unexpected threat in the nick of time -- six pounds of weapons-grade plutonium; enough to change the balance of power in the world.

But that's nothing compared to the justice they serve against the villainous adversary who savagely murdered their brother. That is done the Expendables way....

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - 1 year to release gets an official synopsis
To mark a year until the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Warner Bros. Pictures are pleased to make available an official one page document on the production,

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the first of two films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. The second film will be “The Hobbit: There and Back Again.”

Both films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar®-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, the character he played in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins. Also reprising their roles from “The Lord of the Rings” movies are: Cate Blanchett as Galadriel; Ian Holm as the elder Bilbo; Christopher Lee as Saruman; Hugo Weaving as Elrond; Elijah Wood as Frodo; Orlando Bloom as Legolas; and Andy Serkis as Gollum. The ensemble cast also includes (in alphabetical order) Richard Armitage, John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Luke Evans, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Barry Humphries, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Evangeline Lilly, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, and Aidan Turner.

The screenplays for both “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and “The Hobbit: There and Back Again” are by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson. Jackson is also producing the films, together with Fran Walsh and Carolynne Cunningham. The executive producers are Alan Horn, Ken Kamins, Toby Emmerich and Zane Weiner, with Boyens serving as co-producer.
Under Jackson’s direction, both movies are being shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Filming is taking place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.

Among the creative behind-the-scenes team returning to Jackson’s crew are director of photography Andrew Lesnie, production designer Dan Hennah, conceptual designers Alan Lee and John Howe, composer Howard Shore and make-up and hair designer Peter King. The costumes are designed by Ann Maskrey and Richard Taylor. The score is being composed by Howard Shore.
Taylor is also overseeing the design and production of weaponry, armour and prosthetics which are once again being made by the award winning Weta Workshop. Weta Digital take on the visual effects for both films, led by the film’s visual effects supervisor, Joe Letteri. Post production will take place at Park Road Post Production in Wellington.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and “The Hobbit: There and Back Again” are productions of New Line Cinema and MGM, with New Line managing production. Warner Bros Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, with select international territories as well as all international television licensing, being handled by MGM.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” will be released beginning December 14, 2012. The second film, “The Hobbit: There and Back Again,” is slated for release the following year, beginning December 13, 2013.

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” will be released on December 14, 2012 from Warner Bros. Pictures.

The Establishing Shot: Upcoming Film Releases
Afterschool Ezra Miller's acclaimed screen debut gets a February re-release
To coincide with the DVD release of We Need to Talk About Kevin, Director Ezra Miller’s startling feature film debut about a teenager with issues is re-released

See Ezra Miller in his shocking and startling debut as a teenage monster! Pornography, drug addiction and murder...It’s just an average day for pupils an elite American school in the movie about the YouTube generation, AFTERSCHOOL (18).

Robert (Ezra Miller – We Need to Talk About Kevin) - is a young, ill-at-ease American student at a private East Coast preparatory school who has a disturbing penchant for random Youtube clips and online pornography. He is also very much a loner and finds friendly interactions with other students his own age difficult. Robert accidentally captures on camera the agonising death of two attractive and popular female classmates. The principle of the school decides that their lives are to become memorialised as part of an audio-visual assignment designed to speed up the campus-wide healing process – a project that is assigned to Robert. But the video memorial assignment creates an atmosphere of paranoia and unease among students and teachers with unforeseen consequences. Apart from the brilliant performance of Ezra Miller, AFTERSCHOOL also features Rosemary DeWitt (Rachel Getting Married) and Michael Stuhlbarg, who stars in the Coen brothers’ A Serious Man and HBO drama Boardwalk Empire.

The motivation and the inspiration of AFTERSCHOOL, according to the director Antonio Campos, was born out of his own history as a student at an elite New York preparatory school, the alumni of which includes Truman Capote; the death of two close friends and the harrowing event of 9/11, when he was himself only 18 years of age.

Afterschool Release Date:  13th February 2012

From the country that brought us intense and gritty cinema such as City of God and Elite Squad comes this thrilling film based on real-life events adapted from the autobiography of gangland boss Hiroito Joanides de Moraes.  Hiroito, was infamous as The King of Boca do Lixo (an area downtown São Paulo in the 1950’s notorious for its nightclubs, strip joints, prostitution, bars and drugs).

Following the violent murder of his father, in which he was stabbed over forty times with a razor, Hiroito was arrested and accused of the crime, but ultimately not charged.  However two months later, and aged just twenty-one, Hiroito bought two guns and moved to Boca do Lixo, fast becoming one of the most successful, dangerous and wanted criminals in Brazil.  Boca charts his journey through the violence, the girls, the guns and the drugs as Hiroito becomes one of the most feared and legendary gangsters in Brazil.

The Establishing Shot: Music discovered this week: Oh Land - Perfection (Live)
Actually discovered a couple of months ago when I was given the heads up by Julie b of Sony Music. She dances like a Black Swan, looks like a Super Model, tells tales like Hans Christian Andersen and sings like an Angel. She is Nanna Øland Fabricius or as she is more well known as Singer/Producer - Oh Land. Like a Siren she entranced me with her hypnotic voice, bassy drum beats and electro tones. Check Oh Land’s Perfection Live here:
