This Week on The Establishing Shot:
I has almost caught up on my backlog of all the film news worth reading, almost, but last week was manic between work been full tilt and making time to to be involved in a number of great events that happened last week has pushed my blogging schedule further out and I'm sure some things may have fallen between the gaps.:/

Headhunters Norwegian Tastemaker Evening
We went along to the Headhunters Norwegian Tastemaker Evening where we got to see Headhunters or rather Hodejegerne a cinematic adaptation of former Norwegian musician and now respected crime writer Jo Nesbø’s apparently great novel. Unfortunately I cannot tell you anything about it yet - but I would HURRY over to http://www.jamesoncultfilmclub.com/boxoffice/ and try get tickets to the upcoming Jameson Cult Film Club screening to be held on 21 March at the Saatchi Gallery as quickly as possible.

We were also treated to Nordic delicacies served up Norwegian Master Chef Ole-Martin Hansen including his world famous Juniper & Beech smoked salmon made to his family’s recipe, Jubileaum Danish Akvavit, Jarlsberg Cheese and Tuborg.

Headhunters Hodejegerne has a 6 April 2012 release date

War of the Arrows Archery Experience at 2020 Archery
The events from the evening, particularly the Danish Akvavit coming back to bite me the next day at the War of the Arrows Archery Experience at 2020 Archery to celebrate Cine Asia’s UK release of the critically acclaimed box-office smash-hit War of the Arrows on Blu-ray & DVD this April.

This was an exceptional experience and opportunity for a long overdue stretching of my martial arts muscles with the 2020 Archery team guiding us through the proper techniques of using a bow and arrow and then pitting ourselves against one another in competition. I have seen War of the Arrows and can tell you that it is a lot better than my archery skills.

War Of The Arrows is an epic tale of social rebellion that comes down to a kick ass chase film. I missed it at last year’s Korean Film Festival and have been waiting for it to appear on Blu-ray or DVD ever since and it does not disappoint. More info can be found further below and I should have a review up soon.

War Of The Arrows on Blu-ray and DVD 30 April, 2012

 John Carter UK Premiere
I also got to pop along to the John Carter UK Premiere and soak in the atmosphere of a star studded evening as well as see Disney’s John Carter a great throwback to a boys own adventure. After the screening Director Andrew Stanton hopped onto the BFI stage for a brilliant QA session wherein he discussed making Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter, possible sequels and cameos in John Carter.

My full review as well as pics, videos and the QA can be accessed from here: http://www.theestablishingshot.com/search/label/John%20Carter

The Establishing Shot: John Carter Review JOHN CARTER IS A LOT OF FUN!
Not so much a review as some thoughts thrown together really quickly of Disney’s John Carter. Earlier this evening I went along to the UK Premiere of John Carter courtesy of upcoming screenwriter Chris Wilson or TolkienNerd as some of you may know him as.

The skinny
John Carter is not a perfect film. I should not open with that - as it sets a certain expectation that the film doesn't deserve. So just to clarify I absolutely loved every bit of John Carter until the climax which let it down for me, but was then lifted back up again by the ending. It is a very smart film with a class production and faultless effects - but failed on the most part to engage with me emotionally. I think this had a lot to do with the breadth and scope of what the story had to cover in its 132 min runtime.

MICHAEL
This is a portrait of an impassive man, remarkably (or un-remarkably) portrayed by Michael Fuith, who we observe quietly going about his suburban life - attending his work, returning with his shopping to cook dinner in his neat and tidy home. We soon learn this man, Michael, has a boy held captive in his cellar. What makes the film so compelling is the ordinariness of their strangely domestic set up, at times they could be mistaken for father and son. Michael cuts the boy's hair, they prepare for Christmas and take trips to local parks. The true horrors of what is going on are only implied to us. The film deftly avoids emotions, judgement and even controversy - and as it should, we hardly need to be coerced into a feeling or opinion on this. What plays out has a cool, slow burning tension, fractured intermittently with shocking moments and sometimes even humour, that serve to remind the viewer of the quiet chaos that lies not only in the cellar, but which often lurks beneath the ordinary...

The Establishing Shot: Poster Of the week – Mondo John Carter Poster
The marketing imagery from a lot of big films seems to be very low key, very rough and ready lately. Possibly this is an effort to cut back on marketing cost and rather put the money on the screen. Perhaps it has more to do with studios needing marketing imagery from unfinished CG based films or maybe studios are trying to pitch their films as low key before blowing you away. Either way I have seen some rather shoddy poster work lately I’m talking to you John Carter and The Avengers Assembled. Thankfully Mondo have raised the bar with their John Carter poster for the special US IMAX screenings. It says IMAX all the way!

Mondo John Carter Poster
Image: John Carter Mondo Poster

John Carter the newest movie from Academy Award®–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton is an action adventure story set on Barsoom, the exotic and mysterious planet we know as Mars. Based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs classic novel, John Carter is the story which inspired many of the most imaginative and well known Hollywood movies, past and present.

The movie tells the tale of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly involved in a conflict of epic proportions between the inhabitants of the planet,
including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins).

In a world on the brink of collapse, John Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

John Carter is released in cinemas on 9 March 2012

The Establishing Shot: Trailer of the Week - How I Spent My Summer Vacation or Get the Gringo Teaser Trailer
We got the trailer for Mel Gibson’s new How I Spent My Summer Vacation or as it was formally know Get the Gringo a couple of weeks ago. And I have to say it looks pretty bad ass. It seethes with classic mad & bad Gibson from roles like Mad Max, Payback and Lethal Weapon. I should be looking around for more information on How I Spent My Summer Vacation but I really don’t want to spoil the film for myself.

Hopefully it won’t pull a bait and switch like Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol you know like when they presented a seemingly serious film in the teaser but it actually turned out to be a pseudo comedy.

It’s been a bad day for Driver (Gibson) and it’s not getting any better. He just made a big haul of millions that would give him a nice summer vacation on easy street. A good idea that went south – literally.

Video: The Establishing Shot: How I Spent My Summer Vacation or Get the Gringo Teaser Trailer

During a high-speed car chase with the US Border Patrol, and a bleeding body in his back seat, Driver flips his car smashing through the border wall, tumbling violently, coming to a stop … in Mexico.  Apprehended by the Mexican authorities, he is sent to a hard-core prison where he enters the strange and dangerous world of “El Pueblito”, the worst prison in all of Mexico.  Not an easy place for an outsider such as Driver to survive, unless it’s with the help of someone who knows the ropes - a 10 year-old kid.

Directed by Adrian Grunberg, How I Spent My Summer Vacation, is produced by Mel Gibson, Bruce Davey and Stacy Perskie and stars Mel Gibson, Daniel Gimenez Cacho, Jesus Ochoa, Roberto Sosa, Dolores Heredia, Kevin Hernandez, Fernando Becerril, Mayra Serbullo, Mario Zaragoza, Gerardo Taracena, Tenoch Huerta and Peter Gerety.

The Establishing Shot: AWESOME! Of the week - WATCH THE PETER WEYLAND 2023 TED TALK - Prometheus Viral Video
This week we got to see a step up in the marketing for Sir Ridley Scott’s Prometheus - as it went viral with a clip of a Ted 2023 talk from Peter Weyland - the owner of the company that sent the original Alien crew into space. Shades of Alien as well as Blade Runner coming through. With promises of more to come.

Sir Peter Weyland was born in Mumbai, India at the turn of the Millennium. The progeny of two brilliant parents; His mother, an Oxford Educated Professor of Comparative Mythology, his father, a self-taught software Engineer, it was clear from an early age that Sir Peter’s capabilities would only be eclipsed by his ambition to realize them. By the age of fourteen, he had already registered a dozen patents in a wide range of fields from biotech to robotics, but it would be his dynamic break-throughs in generating synthetic atmosphere above the polar ice cap that gained him worldwide recognition and spawned an empire.”
In less than a decade, Weyland Corporation became a worldwide leader in emerging technologies and launched the first privatized industrial mission to leave the planet Earth. “There are other worlds than this one,” Sir Peter boldly declared, “And if there is no air to breathe, we will simply have to make it.“

Video: The Establishing Shot: WATCH THE PETER WEYLAND 2023 TED TALK - Prometheus Viral

Peter Weyland has been a magnet for controversy since he announced his intent to build the first convincingly humanoid robotic system by the end of the decade.
Whether challenging the ethical boundaries of medicine with nanotechnology or going toe to toe with the Vatican itself on the issue of gene-therapy sterilization, Sir Peter prides himself on his motto, “If we can, we must.” After a three year media blackout, Weyland has finally emerged to reveal where he’s heading next. Wherever that may be, we will most certainly want to follow.

people create cover many topics and genres, and make use of today’s accessible digital technologies to tell their stories with them in control. The roles of cast and crew would have been undertaken by various members of the young people in the group. Each would have had the opportunity to write, act, shoot, direct, light, edit, produce
and screen their own film.

The young filmmakers come from across the UK and a  wide variety of social backgrounds and experiences  –  including those with refugee status, young offenders and those from deprived areas – with each filmmaker
imparting a unique aspect of themselves into their films.
Barbara Broccoli, First Light Chair, remarked: ‘Filmmaking amongst young people across the UK has never been more popular. It is vitally important that young people from all backgrounds have a creative voice. The future of the British Film industry will benefit from the creative talents that have been nurtured by First Light and celebrated at the First Light Awards.’

BREATHTAKING HOGWARTS CASTLE SCALE MODEL REVEALED TO THE PUBLIC FOR THE FIRST TIME
The magnificent model of Hogwarts castle was revealed for the first time ever today.  This hand sculpted 1:24 scale construction will be the grand finale of Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter which opens on 31st March.

The Hogwarts castle model is the jewel of the Art Department and was built for the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone™.  It took 86 artists and crew members to construct the first version which was then rebuilt and altered many times over for the next seven films.  The work was so extensive that if one was to add all the man hours that have gone into building and reworking the model, it would come to over 74 years.  The model, which sits at nearly 50 feet in diameter, has over 2,500 fibre optic lights that simulate lanterns and torches and even gave the illusion of students passing through hallways in the films.  To show off the lighting to full effect a day-to-night cycle will take place every 4 minutes so visitors to the Tour can experience its full beauty.

An amazing amount of detail went into the making of the model: all the doors are hinged, real plants are used for landscaping and miniature birds are housed in the Owlery.  To make the model appear even more realistic, artists rebuilt miniature versions of courtyards from Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral, where scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone™ were shot.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter will open its doors for the very first time to visitors from 31st March 2012 with tickets now on sale. Tickets are priced at £28 for adults, £21 for children and £83 for a family of four. Visitors must pre-book their tickets in advance by selecting specific tour times throughout the day via www.wbstudiotour.co.uk or through approved tour operators. Tickets will not be on sale at the attraction and spaces are limited.

Hammer’s hit film The Woman in Black has broken records again after becoming the UK’s highest grossing British horror film since records began 20 years ago*.  The film has now made more than many Hollywood productions shot in the UK with British talent such as: The Others, Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Interview with a Vampire, as well as home-grown horrors such as Shaun Of The Dead and 28 Days Later.

The previous top titles are:

The film’s UK success is echoed by a sensational North American performance for a British film, which now stands at more than $50million after 25 days on release.

The Woman in Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe, is directed by James Watkins and adapted by Jane Goldman from the classic novel by Susan Hill.   The film is a Hammer, Alliance Films, The UK Film Council presentation, in association with Cross Creek Pictures and is a Talisman production in association with Exclusive Media. Producers are Richard Jackson, Simon Oakes and Brian Oliver. Executive Producers are Guy East, Nigel Sinclair, Tobin Armbrust, Marc Schipper, Neil Dunn, Xavier Marchand, Roy Lee and Tyler Thompson.

Simon Oakes, President & CEO of Hammer and Vice Chairman of Exclusive Media commented:  “The record-breaking success of The Woman in Black is an important achievement that affirms the re-birth of Hammer.  We are continuing to develop exciting and intelligent genre films this year such as The Quiet Ones and Gaslight, both of which will shoot in the UK.”

Nigel Sinclair, CEO and Co-Chairman of Exclusive Media, Hammer’s parent company, added:  “We are delighted that the film has performed so well in both the US and the UK.  It is titles like The Woman in Black, as well as The ides of March and Rush, that highlight Exclusive’s commitment to making quality films with top tier talent and international appeal.”

Xavier Marchand, President of Worldwide Distribution, Alliance Films and Managing Director Momentum Pictures, said: “The Woman in Black has been the number one film in the UK for the last 3 weeks and with close to $100m already at the worldwide Box Office shows how great British films can resonate not only here in the UK but also abroad.  Congratulations to James Watkins, Daniel Radcliffe, Jane Goldman and all involved in The Woman in Black.”

UNIVERSAL PICTURES CONTINUES YEARLONG 100th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION WITH REVEAL OF NEW ANIMATED LOGO
As part of Universal Pictures’ yearlong 100th anniversary celebration, the studio will be revealing an updated animated logo to celebrate this special occasion. The new animated logo will be released worldwide on March 2nd and will be featured on all Universal releases going forward.  The new logo honours the authenticity of the brand, and pays homage to the studio’s rich film history, cultural impact and global vision (A static version of this logo is featured at the top of this release).  This is the seventh incarnation of an animated logo created for the motion picture studio since its inception.

Video: Universal Centennial Logo

“Our centennial year is the perfect opportunity to create a new logo that reflects our future while honouring our past,” said Ron Meyer, Universal Studios President and COO.  “Universal’s new logo celebrates the studio’s extraordinary legacy in creating lasting movie memories, and connecting viewers across the globe.”

For the new animated logo design, Universal teamed up with the Academy Award® winning visual effects artists at New Zealand-based Weta Digital to capture Universal’s vision for a contemporary logo that stayed true to the company’s legacy identity of a  “global vision.”  The visual dynamic of the new logo was inspired by satellite imagery that illustrated a view of the world on a clear night from space. Rather than focusing on the continents and physical boundaries that separate people, the new view is highlighted with tiny points of bright lights that pop across the globe symbolising the thousands of communities brought together by their shared love of film.

In combination with the animated logo, award-winning film composer Brian Tyler (The Fast and the Furious franchise) provided a new arrangement of Jerry Goldsmith’s classic score, which has accompanied the logo since 1997. The iconic theme of Goldsmith’s original composition remains, but the orchestration has been bolstered with a choir, new string parts and drum cadence utilising world percussion instruments.

“We wanted to utilise the classic melody that we all know and bring it into the 21st Century, while still being very respectful of what Jerry Goldsmith did originally,” said Tyler. “I wanted it to be a celebration of all the great movies Universal has done over the years— connecting the past to the present.”

In addition to the new logo, other key Universal 100th anniversary initiatives include: a major film restoration commitment, home entertainment offerings, theme park celebrations, and a special anniversary gala featuring many of the filmmakers and artists who shaped the studios’ history. In addition, the studio will spotlight the 100th Anniversary throughout various worldwide film festivals and other featured events, panels and activities.    At the centre of all online initiatives lies a rich, robust website dedicated to all things related to the yearlong celebration of Universal’s 100th Anniversary. ANTICIPATION FOR THE HUNGER GAMES HEATS UP AND AUTHOR SUZANNE COLLINS’ THOUGHTS AFTER SEEING THE HUNGER GAMES FILM
On March 23rd THE HUNGER GAMES will be released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland, giving fans of Suzanne Collin’s bestselling novel of the same name a chance to see their hero Katniss Everdeen on the big screen for the first time.

THE HUNGER GAMES has already broken the record for most first-day sales from online ticketing service Fandango in the US. Tickets went on sale a month before release and the first-day ticket sales on Wednesday, February 22 broke the previous first day advance ticket-seller record held by "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" on Friday, May 14, 2010. "'The Hunger Games' is off to a fantastic start," commented Rick Butler, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Fandango. "We saw the biggest first day advance ticketing sales in our company's nearly 12-year history - which is especially impressive for a March release and a non-sequel."

Coinciding with such strong news, yesterday author Suzanne Collins addressed her fans on facebook after seeing the film for the first time:

“Dear Readers,
I’ve just had the opportunity to see the finished film of The Hunger Games. I’m really happy with how it turned out. I feel like the book and the film are individual yet complementary pieces that enhance one another. The film opens up the world beyond Katniss’ point of view, allowing the audience access to the happenings of places… like the Hunger Games control room and President Snow’s rose garden, thereby adding a new dimension to the story.

Director Gary Ross has created an adaptation that is faithful in both narrative and theme, but he’s also brought a rich and powerful vision of Panem, its brutality and excesses, to the film as well. His world building’s fantastic, whether it be the Seam or the Capitol. It’s amazing to see things that are suggested in the book fully developed and so brilliantly realized through the artistry of the designers.

And, my God, the actors. The cast, led by the extraordinary Jennifer Lawrence, is absolutely wonderful across the board. It’s such a pleasure to see how they’ve embodied the characters and brought them to life.

So I’d like to sincerely thank all the many people who devoted their time and talents to the film, especially producers Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik, and the excellent teams at Color Force, Larger Than Life, and Lionsgate.

I hope you enjoy the film!
Suzanne Collins”

THE HUNGER GAMES will be released in cinemas on March 23rd.

The greatest Short film competition ever - Sci-Fi-London 48 Hour Film Challenge
The 2012 challenge weekend is 14 - 16 April.
Over the last four years the SCI-FI-LONDON Film Festival has run a 48hour Film Challenge and we have had over 380 films completed, many of which have gone to other film festivals and been broadcast on TV.

The challenge takes place a few weeks before the film festival so we can judge all the entries and the winning films can be screened at the festival.

Get a crew together, scout some locations, prep your cast and be ready to make a 5 minute short film in just 48 hours. We ask one member of your team to come to the Apollo Picadilly on Saturday 14 April at 10.30am where we give you the TITLE of the film you will make, some DIALOGUE that one of your characters must say to screen, and a list of PROPS that must be seen in the film. This year we also introduce an optional scientific theme... this could be nano-tech, cloning, gene-splicing...or something a little more "fringe".

Once you have all your elements, you have until Monday morning to return the completed movie to us.

In 2008, Gareth Edwards took part and won the competition. Gareth’s debut feature is the multiple award-winning MONSTERS – and the project was green-lit because Vertigo Films saw his winning 48hour short-film right here! So impressed were they with what he could do with no budget in just 2 days that they decided to develop a feature with him.

In 2011 we had a prize from Vertigo Films of a feature-film development deal, we hope that the winners will complete their first feature next year. Also, one of the runners-up was scouted by The Mill and is now working on some amazing projects. We are working on prizes and jury right now, but the dates are locked, so start planning.

For 2012 we can confirm Vertigo Films are offering another development deal to the winners!

HITCHCOCK AND HOLLYWOOD WITH TIPPI HEDREN - BRINGING THE GREAT DAYS OF HOLLYWOOD TO LIFE
17 March 2012 at 7.30pm
Tippi Hedren, the last of Alfred Hitchcock’s glamorous blondes, will be on-stage at the Fairfield to tell you of her time working with Hollywood’s master of suspense.  A critic wrote, ‘Hitchcock had given us one Grace Kelly in a generation and seems intent on giving us another in the person of Tippi Hedren, a classically beautiful, regally poised blonde.’

With clips from some of Hitchcock’s most famous films on the Fairfield’s Big-Screen, Miss Hedren will discuss the background to famous Hitchcock films, such as Vertigo, Psycho, Marnie, The Man Who Knew Too Much and North By North West.

Alfred Hitchcock left his hometown, East London, to be at the heart of the Film World in Hollywood. With his quirky approach to film-making, he had a deep understanding of music’s role in heightening tension.  Even so, The Birds has no music, while Psycho uses nothing but string instruments. Bernard Herrmann, Hitchcock’s favourite composer, won an Oscar for The Devil & Daniel Webster.

With the critically acclaimed New Queen’s Hall Orchestra on stage to play some of Hollywood’s greatest scores, this will be an exceptional evening for anyone interested in the cinema and fine music-making. John Farrer, a great American conductor and a devoted fan of the NQHO, will guarantee the full Hollywood treatment.

Tippi Hedren is not just a Hollywood Star. She is also famous for her love affair with wild animals, meeting her first lion while filming in Africa. Ever since, she has devoted herself to looking after some 60 Big-Cats, including lions, tigers, leopards and cougars at her reserve in California.  Many of these superb animals are cast-offs from zoos and circuses. With her daughter, Melanie Griffith, Miss Hedren produced and appeared in a film entitled ‘Roar’, which helped establish her big-cat reserve. Perhaps she will tell us a little about this wonderful work. What an extraordinary evening we shall have!

DAMSELS IN DISTRESS SCREENING AND WHIT STILLMAN IN CONVERSATION
11 Apr 18:10 NFT1
Whit Stillman's witty, bitter-sweet look at the lives of a quartet of girls who are determined to make their mark at a male-dominated college.

Stillman's long-awaited film (his first since The Last Days of Disco) takes a typically witty, bitter-sweet look at the lives of a quartet of girls who are determined to ring the changes at a depressingly grungy, hitherto boorish and male-dominated East Coast college. As they put their plans into action, they also, inevitably, become involved with various members of the establishment's masculine population, and find both their loyalty to one another and their very sanity coming under threat… A wry comedy of modern tribal manners, characteristically notable for its superb dialogue and fine performances.

More info and attendee registration can be found at www.am2con.org

“With our growing guest list, screenings and activities AM2 will be the place to be this summer in Southern California for all that is anime and manga,” states Chase Wang of AM2, “Get your Passports today and join us for all the fun!”

The much-awaited second film is set to hit the screens as KAIJI 2, based on what many assert is the most popular episode from the comic book series, “The Greed Swamp”. Kaiji author Nobuyuki Fukumoto was at the center of the screenplay writing process for the sequel, adding a new high-risk game of his invention to ratchet up the psychological intensity. There’s Chinchirorin, the “dice game from Hell” that lifts Kaiji out of an underground slave labor existence to take part in Princess and Slave, a live-or-die game of choice, and finally, the “Man-eating Swamp” – a monstrous pachinko machine capable of instantly destroying lives of anyone dazzled by its big payoff. On his own, Kaiji stands little chance of beating any of these games. But that won’t stop him from staking his life on saving his friends and restoring everyone’s lives!

KAIJI 2
3 years  after the ultimate life-or-death game with Teiai  Group, Kaiji (Tatsuya Fujiwara) was  entrapped by Teiai   and again  back  in the underground, forced  to do hard  labour.
One day, Kaiji wins a bet to get out of the  underground  with 1 million yen,  and promises  the other  workers  that he  will   save them.
But  to do so, he only  has 14 days and  needs 200 million  yen! Kaiji meets his   former rival  Tonegawa   (Teruyuki Kagawa) and learns  that there is a   chance to turn the  tables in  the game. It was  a monster casino  machine that  will make  1 billion yen  if   you win…Can Kaiji make enough money  in the   limited    time?!

Games
Escape from Underground with (Hell’s Dice “Chinchirorin”)
Chinchirorin is a traditional dice game long popular with the masses involving 3 dice and a rice bowl to shake them up in. But here in the underground mining camps of the Teiai corporate empire, the game has been given some new rules. One man plays the “house” while the rest are his clients. A client stands to earn a multiple of the amount bet depending on the dice roll. For example, if he rolls a 4, 5 and 6 (called a “gigolo”), it pays off double; a triple roll of the same number between 2 and 6 earns him
3 times his bet, and all ones has a 5-fold payoff. But a roll of 1, 2, 3 (“hifumi”) and a client must pay the house twice what he bet. Any cheating or foul play discovered results in the perpetrator paying back 4 times the bet. The client determines how much he wants to bet up to a maximum of 100,000 “pelicas”.

The Ultimate Multiple Choice “Princess and Slave”
An original game dreamed up by Nobuyuki Fukumoto that is not found in the original story, the “Princess and Slave” plays on a primal life-or-death decision. The “slave” (player) is locked in a chamber surrounded by 3 doors.

Behind one of the doors is his beautiful princess. But behind the other two doors lie ferocious and starved lions. The slave must push the button on a panel opening one of those doors. If he opens the door to the princess, he (and the princess) earns their freedom. The twist is that the princess
actually knows which number door she stands behind and can tell the slave whatever she wants. But will she tell him the truth?

Monster pachinko machine: “The Man-eating Swamp”
A standard pachinko machine pays off 4 yen for every metal ball that falls into a retrieval hole. By contrast, a ball won on the Monster Pachinko machine pays 1,000 times that, or 4,000 yen. Hit the jackpot and a player can take home a billion yen ($10 million). But there are two major obstacles to overcome. The first is a “forest of nails” on the pachinko board that is designed to send the pachinko balls in every direction but the right one.

Any balls that manage to clear the forest then enter the 3-level “kroon” – three concave dishes that funnel the balls into winning and losing holes: 3 holes on the top level, 4 holes on the middle tier and 5 holes on the third and lowest kroon. With only one winning hole per level, the odds of a ball passing through all three to earn the jackpot is 60 to 1. Doesn’t sound too
bad. But is that all there is to it?

Directed by Toyo Sato
Screenplay by Nobuyuki Fukumoto, Junya Yamazaki, Sachiko Oguchi
Music by Yugo Kanno
