The Establishing Shot Film News We are bringing back our news updates - as we have had a few requests and As I have too many incomplete posts that I lost interest in while trying to find the time to round them out. It's less time consuming to put together than some of the more requested features, besides it's fun to highlight the good stuff as well as hope for the best with others.

It's been awhile so there are lots of little news updates. I have tried to be brief but cover some really interesting news across two updates this one focussing on the more artistic and Cult side of things and a second post more focussed on the fun and crowd pleasing side of things. Sadly as it has taken some time to put this together some of the news and events may be dated - but still worth a read.

The Film Distributors’ Association highlights recent feature films with a strong focus on those shot in LONDON

FDA WELCOMES THE DIVERSE LINE-UP OF UK FILMS COMING TO CINEMAS AROUND EASTER

Film Distributors’ Association (FDA) celebrates the diverse line-up of films made wholly or partly in the UK which are opening for cinema audiences around Easter.

In 2015, UK films (including co-productions) achieved a high market share of 44% of cinema box-office receipts. This year to date, Dad’s Army and Grimsby have attracted a combined audience of more than a million UK cinemagoers.

The UK offers world-class film studio facilities and effects houses, a variety of unique locations, and experienced crews and support companies.

The following films took in London:

Bastille Day (opening in UK cinemas on 22 April): An action thriller starring Idris Elba, Richard Madden and Kelly Reilly, Bastille Day was shot in London and Paris. The principal London location was the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, which stood in for the streets of Paris around the Bank of France, the site of a huge riot sequence at the film’s climax.

Video: BASTILLE DAY - Interrogation Clip - In Cinemas April 22nd

Couple in a Hole : Written and directed by Tom Geens, this film was shot in the French Pyrenees and at London’s Three Mills Studios. It won the Audience Award and Best Film at the Dinard British Film Festival 2015. Paul Higgins and Kate Dickie star as a British couple who end up living like savages in a vast forest.

Criminal : This international thriller was filmed in London, Croydon and Camber Sands (for a beach scene). Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman, Tommy Lee Jones, Ryan Reynolds and Alice Eve star in the tale of a dangerous criminal, in whose head the memories of a dead CIA agent are implanted. Gal Gadot, about to debut as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, also stars.

Desert Dancer : A biographical drama starring Freida Pinto, Tom Cullen and Reece Ritchie as Afshin Ghaffarian, who fulfils a childhood dream by starting an underground dance company in Iran – where dancing in public is forbidden. The film was shot in London and Morocco.

Eddie the Eagle : Dexter Fletcher directs Taron Egerton as Eddie, the British underdog competing at the 1988 Winter Olympics, with Hugh Jackman as his trainer. Shot at Pinewood Studios, the ski-jumping sequences were filmed in Bavaria by ace action director, Vic Armstrong.

Fan : Shah Rukh Khan stars in this thriller about obsession and identity. Its central London locations include King’s Cross and Madame Tussauds, while further location filming took place at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, and in Croatia.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War : Chris Hemsworth returns to the big screen as the Huntsman in a fantasy prequel to Snow White and the Huntsman. Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain also star. Location filming took place in Windsor Great Park, Waverley Abbey in Surrey and Wells Cathedral, Somerset.

The Man Who Knew Infinity : Dev Patel plays Srinivasa Ramanujan, who comes from a poor background in India to study at Cambridge University, where he pioneers theories in mathematics. Stephen Fry, Toby Jones and Jeremy Irons (as his university professor) also star. The London locations included Charterhouse Square in Smithfield.

The Ones Below : A psychological suspense thriller, written and directed by David Farr, and filmed entirely in London. Two couples, each expecting a baby, who live in neighbouring flats become acquainted Рwith ultimately terrifying consequences. Cl̩mence Po̩sy and David Morrissey star.

Lord Puttnam of Queensgate CBE, FDA President, said:
At its best there is nothing to rival the shared, immersive experience of the movies, and it’s thrilling to see London at the forefront of our big-screen entertainment. London is a cinematic powerhouse, generating more than a quarter of the UK’s entire box-office ticket sales each year.”

Several releases were filmed in other parts of the UK, for example:

Black Mountain Poets : A comedy written and directed by Jamie Adams, starring Alice Lowe. Set in a Welsh camping retreat for poets, the film won rave reviews at the Edinburgh Film Festival 2015. It was shot in Merthyr Tydfil and Porthcawl.

High-Rise : Ben Wheatley directs Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller and Luke Evans in this adaptation of a JG Ballard story about life in a tower block running amok. It was shot wholly in Northern Ireland.

      The Establishing Shot: BEN WHEATLEY'S HIGH-RISE TRAILER - 18 MARCH 2016

Iona : Written and directed by Scott Graham, Iona was shot in Glasgow as well as on the isle of Iona itself. Ruth Negga plays a character named after her birthplace, Iona, who takes her teenage son there to seek atonement for his violent crime.

Secrets of the Cinema Projection Box Revealed
This is a very cool project undertaken by the University of Warwick looking at Projection booths, the people who run them, what it takes to run them and how they have "progressed". If it's too long to read click on the link in the middle of the article to visit an online virtual projection booth and have a snoop around it is genuinely interesting and informative if you love film.

As film reels have made way for digital files, cinema craft has changed. Researchers from the University of Warwick, working with photographer Richard Nicholson are giving members of the public privileged access to a realm most cinema-goers never venture, the projection box.

The team are part of The Projection Project at the University of Warwick, which investigates the evolving art of cinematic projection funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council. They are working to document the changing role of the projectionist, following the switch of most cinemas to digital projection.

The University of Warwick’s Projection Project has conducted audio interviews with projectionists recounting their working lives. Recorded around the UK from Glasgow to Bristol, Newcastle to Cardiff, Birmingham to Leeds, London and elsewhere in between those interviewed include projectionists who are still working, have retired or been made redundant by the shift to digital projection. The recorded memories reach all the way back to the 1940s and cover the changes in the industry since then, from highly flammable nitrate prints and the increased safety of acetate film to the abrupt arrival of digital projectors and the sudden redundancy of many projectionists.

The Projection Project has created a virtual projection box; where visitors can explore an interactive website, listen to interviews with projectionists as they discuss their craft, and learn about the equipment used in projection: http://projectionproject.warwick.ac.uk

Visitors will learn from projectionists themselves about what the job entails, the projectionists' views of cinema and the aesthetics of the 'good performance', contributing to their understanding of cinema as both industry and art form.

Their research also looks at the expansion of projection outside of the cinema. Increasingly people are making use of affordable technology taking cinematic projection into all kinds of atmospheric venues as well as people’s homes and out into the streets, sometimes known as ‘guerrilla projection’, ‘light-bombing’ and ‘projection-mapping’.

Dr Richard Wallace, University of Warwick Research Fellow said,
It is an old projectionists’ adage that the audience should not know that they are there. It is the tragedy of the projectionist that the better they are at the job, the more their labour goes unappreciated. With The Projectionists we hope to make visible some of the magic involved in making a visit to the cinema such a magical experience, before projectionist are gone forever.”

Neil Thompson, projectionist said,

You think, ‘This film’s cost so many millions to make and it’s me that’s in charge of showing it. I’m the last link in the chain’. I think this is what I think a projectionist is. From a story to a screenplay, then a crew’s got ready, and then they get the actors and it’s filmed, it’s processed, then it’s sent to cinemas for people to see. You’re the last link in the chain so it’s up to you to present it properly.”

The Projection Project team will give a ‘Secrets of the Projection Box’ talk on Sunday 24 April, 3.45pm, in the Birmingham Museum and Gallery Gas Hall, as part of Flatpack Film Festival. In addition a Virtual Projection Box will be set up for visitors to explore.

An exhibition of Richard Nicholson’s photography is also running throughout the Flatpack Film Festival in Birmingham (20-24 April) where Richard’s images which help to capture this pivotal moment are on display for the first time.

Peter Greenaway's Eisenstein in Guanajuato is in cinemas
What can I write about Director Peter Greenway that has not been written before. He is a true genius of the visual medium an artist in every sense of the word, the type of artist that would be referred to as an old master in academic books.

Greenway's latest film Eisenstein in Guanajuato can be seen the way it should be on a big screen in select UK cinemas right now and I'm sure it will be as deep as it is visually arresting.

     From the ICA website:

In 1931, at the height of his artistic powers, Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein (Elmer Bäck) travels to Mexico to shoot a new film to be titled Que Viva Mexico. Freshly rejected by Hollywood and under increasing pressure to return to Stalinist Russia, Eisenstein arrives at the city of Guanajuato. Chaperoned by his guide Palomino Cañedo (Luis Alberti), he vulnerably experiences the ties between Eros and Thanatos, sex and death, happy to create their effects in cinema, troubled to suffer them in life.

Awarded Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema at the 2014 BAFTAs, Peter Greenaway CBE, one of the most inventive, ambitious and controversial filmmakers of our time, explores the mind of one of the greatest masters of cinema (in the first of a trilogy of feature films), a creative genius facing the desires and fears of love, sex and death through ten passionate days that helped shape the rest of his career.

Terrence Malick's Knight of Cups is out in UK cinemas 6 May
Yes! Finally it is here. Terrence Malick's Knight of Cups will be out in UK cinemas 6 May. It has to be said that I have sadly seen too few trailers of late that differentiate themselves, elevate the game or mean anything. That doesn't necessarily mean that there aren't many good films on the way just that - I haven't seen many exciting trailers. But late last year I was bowled over by the trailer for Terrence Malick's Knight of Cups in fact the first five shots from the trailer had me absolutely stunned as his use of sound and visuals enthralled me.

First a little context as to how we got here may be in order Knight of Cups is the third in Malick's epical (in the true sense of the word) allegorical exploration - of modern man in the throes of existential angst as he comes to terms to modern life and moves down a path further from nature or Supernature and himself.

We have had Jessica Chastain, Brad Pitt and Sean Penn in The Tree of Life (2011) symbolically bridging the generational gap (from The Thin Red Line 1998) and heralding Malick's move into the modern era. Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem in To the Wonder (2012), Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman and Christian Bale in Knight of Cups set for release this year followed up by his currently untitled project Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman Texas Music film.      Rick (Christian Bale) is a comedy writer living in present-day Santa Monica. He longs for something other, something beyond the life he knows, without knowing quite what it is, or how to go about finding it. He doesn’t know which way to turn.

The death of his brother, Billy, hangs over him like a shadow. His father, Joseph (Brian Dennehy), bears a sense of guilt for Billy’s death. A surviving brother, Barry (Wes Bentley), down on his luck, has just moved to LA from where they grew up, in Missouri. Rick has been helping him get back on his feet.

Rick seeks distraction in the company of women: Della (Imogen Poots); Nancy (Cate Blanchett), a physician he was once married to; a model named Helen (Freida Pinto); Elizabeth (Natalie Portman), a woman he made pregnant; A stripper named Karen (Teresa Palmer); and a young woman who helps him to see his way forward, Isabel (Isabel Lucas).

The Establishing Shot: TERRENCE MALICK'S KNIGHT OF CUPS TRAILER - 6 MAY

Women seem to him to know more than he does. They bring him closer to the heart of things, closer to the mystery. The highs haven’t added up. The parties, the dalliances, the career, none has satisfied. And still each woman, each man he’s met through the course of his life has served him in some way as a guide, a messenger.

The road to the East stretches out before him. Will he set forth? Will his courage fail him? Will he stay awake? Or will he let it all be just a dream, a hope, a passing fancy?

     The journey has just begun.

Don Cheadle's Miles Ahead gets an exciting new clip that demonstrates why Don Cheadle was born for this role

Don Cheadle as Miles Davis in Miles Ahead
Don Cheadle as Miles Davis in Miles Ahead [VIEW]

There are few musical geniuses that stand as tall as Legendary bluesman Miles Davis and his presence is just as relevant today as it was 65 years ago when he changed music. I'm looking forward to seeing a crucial part of his life being brought to the big screen in Miles Ahead a film written, directed by and starring Don Cheadle as Miles Davis.

Video: Miles Ahead - Clip #1 - In cinemas April 22

All Rolling Stone reporter Dave Braden (Ewan McGregor) wants is an exclusive interview with the jazz legend himself, Miles Davis (Don Cheadle). What he gets instead is a wild and dangerous ride-along with a recording artist living at his edge, rife with shootouts, car-chases, and a tale of lost love to the singer Frances (Emayatzy Corinealdi).

Video: Miles Ahead - Official UK Trailer (2016)

Inspired by events in Miles Davis's life, Academy Award® Nominee Don Cheadle boldly brings his vision, both in-front-of and behind-the-camera in MILES AHEAD, his directorial debut. A wildly entertaining, impressionistic, no-holds-barred portrait of one of twentieth-century music’s creative geniuses.

Paolo Sorrentino’s critically acclaimed, Youth now available on Digital Download, DVD and Blu-Ray
Paolo Sorrentino's Youth is magic. It is an absolutely marvellous and mind blowingly wonderful piece of cinema from the man behind greats like; The Great Beauty, This Must Be the Place and The Consequences of Love, in fact every one of his films is a visual and emotional narrative treat.

I'm genuinely shocked that it never any BAFTA recognition and only 1 Oscar nomination for David Lang's song: "Simple Song #3", which in itself is an achievement. Both Harvey Keitel and Sir Michael Caine put in performances of note but Sir Michael should have been accepting some serious accolades for his role. Youth is a mesmerising mix of intellect, wit, charm, emotive visuals weved over a touching story about two old men but really everything else. Direction, Screenplay, Art Direction, Editing and Cinematography should have been up for nominations as well.

STUDIOCANAL is thrilled to announce the home entertainment release of Paolo Sorrentino’s beautiful and bittersweet film, YOUTH.

Featuring a career-best performance from Sir Michael Caine (The Batman Trilogy, Harry Brown, The Quiet American) and from the Academy Award®- winning director of The Great Beauty, YOUTH is a warm, witty and deeply moving portrait of love and loss.

Fred and Mick, two old friends now approaching eighty, are on vacation together in an elegant hotel at the foot of the Alps. Fred (Michael Caine), a retired composer, is resisting attempts to revive his greatest work, while elderly film director Mick (Harvey Keitel) is desperate to make a comeback movie starring his former, favoured actress Brenda (Jane Fonda). The two friends reflect on their past, as they look with curiosity and tenderness on their children’s confused lives, Mick’s enthusiastic young writers, and the other hotel guests, all of whom, it seems, have all the time that they lack.

Also starring Rachel Weisz and Paul Dano, YOUTH premiered to critical acclaim at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Eureka Entertainment to release EDVARD MUNCH, Peter Watkins’ astonishing 1974 masterpiece about the Norwegian Expressionist painter of The Scream, on Blu-ray in the UK on 13 June 2016
Described by Ingmar Bergman as “a work of genius”, Peter Watkins’ multi-faceted masterwork is more than just a biopic of the iconic Norwegian Expressionist painter; it is one of the best films ever made about the artistic process. Focusing initially on Munch’s formative years in late 19th century Kristiania (now Oslo), Watkins uses his trademark vérité style to create a vivid picture of the emotional, political, and social upheavals that would have such an effect on his art.

The young artist (Geir Westby) has an affair with “Mrs. Heiberg” (Gro Fraas), a devastating experience that will haunt him for the rest of his life. His work is viciously attacked by critics and public alike and he is forced to leave his home country for Berlin, where, along with the notorious Swedish playwright August Strindberg, he becomes part of the cultural storm that is to sweep Europe.

There have been countless film biographies of famous artists, but only a handful can be considered major works in their own right. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Watkins’ extended 221-minute version, in a new Blu-ray presentation.

Arrow to release Francesco Rosi's Three Brothers on Blu-ray
Although Oscar-nominated at the time, Three Brothers has never previously been released on any video format in the UK. Arrow Academy is proud to present it here in a brand new 2K restoration, available on dual format Blu-ray and DVD from 4th April 2016.

Francesco Rosi established himself as one of the greatest chroniclers of Italy’s stormy postwar history with such riveting classics as Salvatore Giuliano, The Mattei Affair and Illustrious Corpses. Three Brothers (Tre fratelli) explores similarly knotty social and political territory through the seemingly straightforward story of three siblings returning to their native southern Italy to pay homage to their late mother. However, their various professions – a judge in Rome (Philippe Noiret), a spiritual counsellor in Naples (Vittorio Mezzogiorno), a factory worker in Turin (Michele Placido) – have a profound effect on their response to this reunion.

EUREKA to release Robert Altman's That Cold Day in The Park
Just prior to his career breakthrough M*A*S*H, Robert Altman made this memorably unsettling psychological thriller, which originally premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

Eureka Entertainment to release THAT COLD DAY IN THE PARK, Robert Altman’s 1969 psychological gothic thriller, for the first time ever in the UK in a Dual Format edition as part of the Masters of Cinema Series on 20 June 2016.

Just prior to his career breakthrough M*A*S*H, Robert Altman made this memorably unsettling psychological thriller, which originally premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

Frances Austen, a young, wealthy spinster, invites a mute teenager into her apartment after finding him freezing in the park next to where she lives. Despite her best efforts, their lack of communication only increases her sense of loneliness, as her possessiveness spirals into frightening new realms.

A remarkable central performance by Sandy Dennis anchors this fascinating, haunting tale, anticipating Altman’s subsequent studies of female psychological breakdown, Images and 3 Women. Shot by László Kovács (Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces) with Altman’s trademark long lenses and drifting zooms, as well as intriguing experimentation with sound, That Cold Day in the Park is a long-neglected gem from an American master. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present its UK home video premiere in a new Dual-Format edition.

Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece RAN returns fully restored in 4K
STUDIOCANAL / Independent Cinema Office (ICO) are proud to announce a nationwide reissue of Akira Kurosawa’s RAN, recently beautifully restored in 4K and 30 years on from its original release in the UK.

The final masterpiece from legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, RAN, which translates as ‘turmoil’, is Kurosawa’s meditation on Shakespeare’s King Lear crossed with the history of Japan’s 16th century Civil Wars and the legend of Morikawa, a feudal warlord with three sons.

Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsuya Nakadai – Yojimbo, Kagemusha) an ageing warlord who, after spending his life consolidating his empire, decides to abdicate and divide his kingdom amongst his three sons, Taro (Akira Terao - Letter from the Mountain, Dreams), Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu – The Man in White, Red Shadow: Akakage) and Saburo (Daisuke Ryû - Tono monogatari, Gojo reisenki: Gojoe). When Hidetora’s youngest son Saburo voices concerns about the wisdom of his father’s plan, claiming that treachery within the family will be inevitable, Hidetora mistakes these comments for a threat and banishes him. This allows Taro and Jiro to take the reigns of power unopposed, leading to a brutal and bloody struggle to win absolute power.

To commemorate 400 years since William Shakespeare’s death and thirty years on from its original UK theatrical release in 1986, RAN has been meticulously restored in digital 4K by French laboratory Éclair under STUDIOCANAL and Kadokawa Pictures' supervision. Based on an original negative, the majority of the restoration work has been done manually, image by image. An action-packed historical epic of stylistic grandeur, the new restoration amplifies the film’s visual splendour, seen first in all its glory in 2015 where it screened at Cannes, New York and Toronto Film Festivals.

Video: RAN - New Trailer - Restored in Stunning 4K - In Cinemas April 1

Majestic in scope, RAN is a profound examination of the folly of war and the crumbling of one family under the weight of betrayal, greed and the insatiable thirst for power.

RAN will be back in cinemas from 1st April and then available to own on EST on 25th April and on DVD and Blu-Ray from 2nd May. The film will also screen as part of the ‘Shakespeare on Film’ retrospective, which runs at the BFI Southbank from 31st March to 31st May.

Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight is coming to the small screen 2 May
I had hoped to end last year with what I would consider a proverbial bang discussing a my cinematic highlight of 2015, instead I'm kicking off 2016 with that bang of a standard that will hopefully continue throughout the year.

There are many reasons as to why it was my cinematic event of the year if you read The Establishing Shot you'll probably be aware that I am all about the immersive experience and it's unlikely that I'll have as great viewing of a film for a very long time, if ever.

For better or worse I often struggle to appropriately articulate some of what I consider highlight or milestone experiences - words don't fail me rather I feel that these experiences are somewhat diminished when curating them for a broader audience. I have been fortunate to enjoy a number of extremely exceptional experiences that I have kept to/for myself as I have felt that in the end - they mean more to me personally than they would as just another blog post on the web. The irony being that was one of the reasons I started The Establishing Shot in the first place.

This is one such experience... read my review of Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight here: http://www.theestablishingshot.com/2016/01/i-chat-with-quentin-tarantino-about-his.html

While racing toward the town of Red Rock in post-Civil War Wyoming, bounty hunter John “The Hangman” Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive prisoner (Jennifer Jason Leigh) encounter another bounty hunter (Samuel L. Jackson) and a man who claims to be a sheriff (Walton Goggins). Hoping to find shelter from a blizzard, the group travels to a stagecoach stopover located on a mountain pass. Greeted there by four strangers, the eight travellers soon learn that they may not make it to their destination after all..

THE HATEFUL EIGHT also stars Demian Bechir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern and Channing Tatum.
Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, THE HATEFUL EIGHT is produced by Richard N. Gladstein, Stacey Sher and Shannon McIntosh. Harvey Weinstein, Bob Weinstein and Georgia Kacandes are executive producers, and Coco Francini and William Paul Clark are associate producers.

The Establishing Shot: THE HATEFUL EIGHT UK TRAILE

All available versions of the home entertainment release will contain the following additional content:

Beyond the Eight: A Behind-the-Scenes Look
A behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, including interviews with Quentin Tarantino, cast, and crew.

Sam Jackson's Guide to Glorious 70mm
Includes the historical context of 70mm film and discusses about how & why they chose to shoot that way and the benefit of shooting with the wider aspect ratio.

Details of Claire Denis' Sci-Fi film High Life starring Robert Pattinson & Patricia Arquette emerge
Claire Denis is one of the most accomplished and engaging directors working in film today. Her body of work is as broad as it is deep - however the hardcore material she explores won't make her a household name any time soon, rather a master of her craft that may be discovered and appreciated later. After her last foray into dark waters with the the Taken like family thriller Les Salauds (Bastards) she is taking a foray into the Sci-Fi genre with High Life.

For High life Denis will be bringing some of her regulars with her including Tindersticks or at least band lead Stuart Staples will be creating the sound for High Life. And she is bringing together a cast of note, which includes: Robert PattinsonPatricia Arquette and Mia Goth star (Everest, The Survivalist, Nymphomaniac: Vol. II, The Tunnel).

Deep space. Beyond our solar system. Monte and his infant daughter Willow live together aboard a spacecraft, in complete isolation. A solitary man, whose strict self-discipline is a protection against desire – his own and that of others - Monte fathered the girl against his will. His sperm was used to inseminate Boyse, the young woman who gave birth to her. They were members of a crew of prisoners: space convicts, death row inmates.

Guinea pigs sent on a mission to the black hole closest to Earth. Now only Monte and Willow remain. And Monte is changed. Through his daughter, for the first time, he experiences the birth of an all-powerful love. Willow grows, becoming a young girl, then a young woman. Together, alone, father and daughter approach their destination – the black hole in which all time and space cease to exist.

Steve Oram's Aaaaaaaah! is showing at the BFI with a cast Q&A
Too be honest I knew absolutely nothing about Steve Oram's Aaaaaaaah! before I saw it. And this is definitely one occasion where it paid off in spades. I wasn't sure what to expect but was delighted and saddened when I began to understand what was going on in, in the microcosm that Oram creates. Cutting satire that comes a little too close to close to the bone.

Alpha Male, Smith and his Beta, Keith, make a move to take over a local community. They hook up with restless Female, Denise, igniting a deadly feud in which emotions run high and deep-seated grudges re-surface amongst the tribe. Are we not men? Or are we simply beasts?

Steve Oram's debut feature is a celluloid primal scream in which the entire cast speak in grunts and gibberish - an anarchic, hilarious, disturbing and touching look at the human condition..

Sightseers co-writer Steve Oram’s astonishing directorial debut is a brutally funny Swiftian satire of contemporary Britain, starring many of our greatest comic actors all speaking entirely in an invented but beautifully observed ape-like language. It’s a spectacular showcase of primal human urges, skewering our obsessions with sex, greed and consumerism with merciless and often hilarious precision.

Jeremy Saulnier's much talked about Green Room will be in UK cinemas 13th May 2016
After seeing the trailer for Green Room on the big screen at a Picturehouse - I'm really looking forward to the film from director Jeremy Saulnier the brain behind the the pretty awesome, albeit downbeat Blue Ruin. really Seems to be a fresh and intense take on the trapped in a single location genre with a great cast.

Down-on-their-luck punk rockers The Ain’t Rights agree to a last-minute gig in a backwoods Oregon roadhouse. The gig soon takes a sinister turn as the band members stumble upon a grisly murder scene and find themselves targeted by a ruthless club owner and his associates, determined to eliminate all witnesses.

Arrow release Bride of Re-Animator on Blu-ray & DVD
Arrow Video is thrilled to announce the release of Bride of Re-Animator, coming to Blu-ray and DVD on 11th April in a stunning new 2K restoriation, featuring both the unrated and R-Rated cuts of the film. This new deluxe set comes director approved and features a wealth of bonus content.

DATE. MATE. RE-ANIMATE.

The success of Stuart Gordon’s hit horror-comedy Re-Animator meant that a sequel was all but inevitable. The resulting follow-up, Bride of Re-Animator – this time helmed by director Brian Yuzna (Society, Return of the Living Dead III) – would prove that there was a good deal more life (and death) left in the story of Dr Herbert West and his ghoulish exploits.

It has been eight months since the bloody massacre at Miskatonic Medical School. Unperturbed by the disastrous outcome of his previous meddling with the dead, Dr West (again played by Jeffrey Combs) continues his research into the phenomenon of re-animation; only this time, he plans to create life – starting with the heart of his young protégé Dan’s dearly deceased, Meg Halsey. Surely nothing could go wrong?

With special effects master Screaming Mad George (the man behind the infamous “shunting” sequence of Society) on hand to contribute a host of characteristically weird and wonderful creations, Bride of Re-Animator is a more than worthy successor to Stuart Gordon’s original cult classic.

Nicholas Hoult talks Kill Your Friends
There is no doubt that Nicholas Hoult is a very talented performer and that he is pointed in the direction of super stardom, too be honest he has more acting chops and charisma than a lot of people who have garnered much more success - so I was hoping to love Kill Your Friends a lot more. It is a lot of fun aided by the great cast playing out of their comfort zone including Nicholas Hoult, Georgia King, Ed Skrein, Craig Roberts and particularly James Corden's hilarious turn as a music exec. But I felt it was lacking something and way too similar to American Psycho, which wouldn't have been a problem was I not so intrigued by Mary Harron's adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis novel. However I know that my feeling on the film are not entirely shared as people I saw it with who have worked in the music industry and not seen American Psycho thought it was absolutely brilliant. Below is an interesting interview with Nicholas Hoult about Kill your Friends available on Home Release right now.

A&R man Steven Stelfox (Nicholas Hoult) is slashing and burning his way through the music business, a world where ‘no one knows anything’ and where careers are made and broken by chance and the fickle tastes of the general public. Fuelled by greed, ambition and inhuman quantities of drugs, Stelfox lives the dream, as he searches for his next hit record. But as the hits dry up and the industry begins to change, Stelfox takes the concept of “killer tunes” to a murderous new level in a desperate attempt to salvage his career

Video: KILL YOUR FRIENDS Red Band Trailer NSFW

From STUDIOCANAL comes KILL YOUR FRIENDS, starring Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men franchise) as you’ve never seen him before...

Balanced against the backdrop of a cocksure 1997 London, KILL YOUR FRIENDS is the music industry depicted with razor sharp accuracy, and Steven Stelfox (Hoult) is the ultimate anti-hero: a man hell bent on success at any price in an industry that takes the highest form of art and reduces it to a Top 10 chart. Supporting cast includes James Corden (U.S. TV’s The Late Late Show), Craig Roberts (Submarine), Ed Skrein (Deadpool) and Rosanna Arquette (Boyhood).

Video: Nick Hoult talks Kill Your Friends

Based on cult author John Niven’s best-selling novel, this dark, satirical and hysterically funny evisceration of the Nineties music business is not to be missed and will be available on Digital HD from 24th March and on Blu-ray and DVD from 4th April.

Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children gets release date and Trailer
Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children looks absolutely delightful and Eva Green!

Twentieth Century Fox are delighted to announce the theatrical release of MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN, based on the bestselling novel by Ransom Riggs, in the UK and Ireland on Friday 30th September.

Tim Burton comments, “When I was first approached to direct Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children I was given a summary of the novel with all of the photos in the book. I was immediately intrigued by the haunting and mysterious pictures in Ransom Riggs' novel and knew I wanted to tell the story of those kids. A girl, lighter than air, a boy with bees living in his stomach, a woman who turned into a bird—it was a world I wanted to explore. So I made a film about them.”

Author Ransom Riggs, who penned the #1 New York Times bestselling Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children Series adds, “For something I wrote to have inspired Tim Burton to create a doodle on a cocktail napkin would have been an honour. But to stand ringside and watch him pour his whole heart into this film -- that has been one of the great thrills of my life. I couldn't be more excited if you attached electrodes to my toes.”

From visionary director Tim Burton, and based upon the best-selling novel, comes an unforgettable motion picture experience. When Jake discovers clues to a mystery that spans alternate realities and times, he uncovers a secret refuge known as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As he learns about the residents and their unusual abilities, Jake realizes that safety is an illusion, and danger lurks in the form of powerful, hidden enemies. Jake must figure out who is real, who can be trusted, and who he really is.

Arrow Video presents new Rainer Werner Fassbinder titles
The Rainer Werner Fassbinder Collection available on dual format Blu-ray & DVD, 28 March & 4 April 2016.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder died at the age of just 37 but left behind a remarkable legacy. His career as filmmaker lasted less than two decades, yet he managed to direct 40 features, two TV series and numerous stage productions. This remarkable output created some enduring classics and, alongside the works of Werner Herzog, Wim Wenders, Volker Schlöndorff and Alexander Kluge, brought New German Cinema to an international audience.

Arrow Video’s The Rainer Werner Fassbinder Collection, released on 28th March, brings together ten of the director’s finest, including his feature debut Love is Colder Than Death, Katzelmacher, Beware of a Holy Whore, The Merchant of Four Seasons, The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, Fear Eats the Soul, Effi Briest, Fox and His Friends, Chinese Roulette and The Marriage of Maria Braun.

Each film has been lavished a 4K restoration by the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation and comes adorned with an array of extras, including commentaries, documentaries, interviews and short films. This limited edition box set also houses a 200-page hardback book containing all-new writing on the films therein.

Alongside this limited edition set, Arrow will also be releasing each title individually, starting with Fear Eats the Soul and The Merchant of Four Seasons & Beware of a Holy Whore on 28th March and The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant and The Marriage of Maria Braun on 4th April 2016. The remaining titles will follow later in the year.

Fear Eats The Soul
In March 1974 Rainer Werner Fassbinder released what would become arguably his most loved work. Fresh from the Cannes Film Festival, where it had earned its director two prizes, Fear Eats the Soul would soon delight audiences the world over with its tale of romance and racial prejudice in present-day Munich. Emmi (Brigitte Mira), a widowed cleaning lady in her sixties, meets Ali (El Hedi ben Salem), a Moroccan immigrant in his thirties. Seeking companionship, the pair marry to the outrage Emmi’s family (including Fassbinder himself as her aggressive son-in-law), her friends and her colleagues.

Paying homage to the classic melodramas of Douglas Sirk, in particular All That Heaven Allows, Fear Eats the Soul is a beautifully performed look at intolerance and hypocrisy, and a key film for both Fassbinder and the New German Cinema.

The Merchant of Four Seasons & Beware of a Holy Whore
Made in quick succession in 1970 and 1971, Beware of a Holy Whore and The Merchant of Four Seasons represent a key stage in the career of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, the point at which he matured as a filmmaker and first began to attract an international audience. A fictional recounting of the making of Whity, Fassbinder’s take on the American West, Beware of a Holy Whore is a backstage melodrama set in a Spanish seaside hotel. Starring Lou Castel (Requiescant) as the director and Eddie Constantine (Alphaville) as himself, the film is an intriguing and often acidic look through the mirror at Fassbinder and his ‘family’ of cast and crew.

The Merchant of Four Seasons concerns itself with Hans, a fruit seller, former Foreign Legionnaire and family man. Inspired by the discovery of Douglas Sirk’s work – and set, like those classic melodramas, in the 1950s – Fassbinder charts Hans’ downfall with a perfect blend of poignancy and high drama. The Sirkian formula worked so well it would inspire a new phase in the director’s output and produce such classics as The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant and Fear Eats the Soul.

The Marriage of Maria Braun
Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s penultimate film of the seventies was also his most successful. Popular with audiences and critics alike, among them Roger Ebert and François Truffaut, The Marriage of Maria Braun finally provided its director with the international breakthrough he had craved for so long. Maria Braun marries a young soldier amid the Allied bombing raids of World World II the day before he must return to the Russian front. Awaiting his return in 1945, she is informed of his death and must endure and navigate the post-war years alone. Mirroring the German Wirtschaftswunder (‘economic miracle’), she determinedly rises to prosperity as a self-made woman.

Centred on an astonishing performance from Fassbinder regular Hanna Schygulla in the lead role, The Marriage of Maria Braun took over four million Deutschmarks in its home country and made over a million dollars in the US. Such success proved influential too – without it we would likely never have seen Helma Sanders-Brahms’s Germany, Pale Mother or Edgar Reitz’s epic Heimat.

The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant
Originally written and produced as a stage play, in transferring The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant to the big screen Rainer Werner Fassbinder created another masterpiece to rank alongside a string of cinematic classics.

Petra von Kant, with two marriages behind her and an absent daughter, is a successful fashion designer. She lives with her secretary, the repressed and subservient Marlene, who will form the second point in a tragic ménage à trois when Petra meets and falls hopelessly in love with a confident young model named Karin.

Harking back to the women’s pictures of Hollywood’s yesteryear, The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant is a magnificent showcase for Fassbinder’s female stars. Margit Carstensen (as Petra), Irm Hermann (as Marlene) and Hanna Schygulla (as Karin) deliver outstanding performances, three of the finest the cinema has ever see
