This Time on The Establishing Shot:
Since our last update we have eased ourselves back into London life after a couple of weeks on and under the Mexican Riviera Maya. As well as road tripping we spent time in both Tulum and Isla Mujeres close to the whale shark migration route, but that is another story.

Since returning we popped down to the Shortwave Cinema in Bermondsey for a Cuban Night sponsored by Havana Club and sneak preview of 7 Days in Havana. The team put a lot of effort into the evening with branded goodies, Havana Club Mojitos being served up Cuban dancers, live music and a heat wave to emulate Cuba. I’ll have some thoughts on this 7 day visit to Havana telling 7 stories from 7 different Directors including; Benicio Del Toro, Pablo Trapero, Julio Medem, Elia Suleiman, Gaspar Noé, Juan Carlos Tabío and Laurent Cantet for a real mix of emotion and storytelling.

We visited the Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style exhibition at the Barbican, where we had a brief chat with Oscar winning Costume Designer Lindy Hemming about Bane’s outfit from The Dark Knight Rises.

On that note we also got a close up look at Batman & Bane's costumes from The Dark Knight Rises over here

Continuing the Batman theme we popped down to Warner Bros to re-watch Batman Begins (thoughts here) and The Dark Knight in the run up to The Dark Knight Rises being released (early thoughts here, more to follow).

We also caught Ted (thoughts here!) in cinemas today, which has the best 80s nostalgia inducing house party ever. Earlier this week we managed to finally catch a 4K screening of the absolutely astounding Samsara a non verbal exploration of our out of balance life on earth. The stunning visuals were collected over 4 years from around the globe and shot on 70mm film are breathtaking. A full review will be up soon but I want to watch Baraka an earlier film from Director Ron Fricke and Writer Mark Magidson for context before committing my thoughts to pixels.

Sadly we missed two events that I was really looking forward to the launch of Sky’s new Video On Demand service Now TV (More info below) and gut wrenchingly fulfilling my desire of seeing Rap Legend ICE-T in concert (he keeps ignoring my Tweets about playing in London again) along with rap legends Public Enemy's Chuck D, Wu Tang Clan's Raekwon & Ghostface Killah and Grandmaster Melle Mel to commemorate the launch of his directorial debut – a documentary chronicling the roots and history of rap as we know it - The Art Of Rap.

THE ESTABLISHING SHOT: IN THE MAILBAG
Exclusive Prometheus merchandise (backpack, USB and tin, laptop skin and t-shirt)
No! Sir Ridley is not forgiven for the travesty that is Prometheus, but with the inevitable news that the sequel is gearing up and can only be better than the original, now that we have the overly engineered (and sold out) jump off point my anticipation is building, so the arrival of this exclusive kit was welcomed, thanks Curzon.

Exclusive The Raid Record Bag
The arrival of this rare Raid Record bag cheered me up along with the news that The Raid will be released onto DVD & Blu-ray next month (more info further below).

The Spider-man Vault
This sweet museum in a book box arrived a little while back and blew my expectations away full of Spider-man history and accompanying memorabilia it is a Spider fans must have. A full review and breakdown of contents could be up soon.

To Live and Die in L.A. US One sheet movie Poster
Back in June when Killer Joe was released onto an unsuspecting audience I had the opportunity to chat with the Legendary Director William Friedkin unfortunately I was going to be roughly 5000 miles away. I was gutted to say the least, to cheer myself up I tracked down another near mint unused To Live and Die in L.A. US One sheet movie Poster. I say another as I already have on in the archives but is is a bit tatty after being up on my wall & stored for most of my 20s.

Night Porter - On DVD & Blu-Ray 30 Jul 2012
Vienna, 1957. Max (Dirk Bogarde), a former Nazi concentration camp officer, is now employed as a respectable night porter at one of the city's most luxurious hotels. Still anguished by the guilt of his actions during the war, he attempts to relieve his conscience by devoting himself to his work while awaiting the upcoming trial of himself and his fellow Nazi officers.

But one fateful evening Max's disturbing past catches up with him in the form of the beautiful and alluring Lucia (Charlotte Rampling). Now the wife of a respected American classical composer, almost 15 years earlier Lucia was a teenage concentration camp inmate and Max's lover in an aberrant sado-masochistic relationship. Bound by their memories and uncontrollably drawn to each other, Max and Lucia rekindle their bizarre love affair. But their future together becomes threatened by other ghosts from the past…

The Battle of Algiers - On Blu-Ray 09 Jul 2012
Set during the 1954 to 1962 Franco-Algerian conflict, the film effectively and authentically recreates the pivotal political events that took place in the city of Algiers between 1954 and 1957.

The Battle Of Algiers Blu-ray
The Battle Of Algiers Blu-ray
In an attempt to end French colonialism, which had been in place since 1830, in 1954 the Algerian National Liberation Front (FLN) began a war of liberation, using terrorism to highlight the plight of the Algerian people to the rest of the world. In response to the escalating terrorist violence in the city of Algiers, the French government sent in an armed force of paratroopers to crush the uprising. Authorised to use whatever force and methods were believed to be necessary in bringing an end to the revolution, the actions of the French military led to a regrettable catalogue of atrocities being committed by those on both sides of the conflict.

Lion of the Desert - On DVD & Blu-Ray 02 Jul 2012
The year is 1929 and Italian dictator Benito Mussolini faces a 20-year-long war waged by Bedouin patriots who are resisting Italian colonisation and the establishment of “The Fourth Shore” – essentially a re-birth of a Roman Empire in Africa. Hoping to crush the rebellion, Mussolini appoints the ruthless General Rodolfo Graziani, a man who would come to be known as the “Butcher of Fezzan”.

Leading the resistance is Omar Mukhtar, a teacher by profession but a guerrilla by obligation, one who has committed himself to fighting a bloody war than he knows cannot be won in his lifetime. As tanks and airplanes are deployed in the desert for the first time, the Bedouin realize their primitive weaponry is no match for the might of the Italian Army. But, driven by courage and inspired by their leader, they continue to fight on.

Zombie 108 - DVD 30th JULY 2012
After a catastrophic accident at a top secret research lab, a deadly virus is released into the city and all hell breaks loose.

Met with fierce resistance by the local gangs, both sides suffer heavy casualties before realising that the guys with the guns aren't the real enemy: the zombies are!

Video: Zombie 108 - Official Showbox Trailer

The Rise and Fall of a White Collar Hooligan - On DVD 02 Jul 2012
Unemployed and desperately seeking work, Mike Jacobs bumps into an old friend, Eddie Hill, during a post-match riot and arranges to hook up for a drink later that evening. Fortuitously, Ed’s got a business opportunity for Mike – working as a courier, cash-in-hand, no questions asked. Concerned that he might be getting involved in drug dealing, Mike’s somewhat relieved to learn that Ed’s scam involves credit card fraud and the only victims as far as they are concerned are the banks. What Mike doesn’t know is Ed is in the pocket of notorious London gangster whose choice of crime may have changed but whose methods certainly haven’t. Seduced by the money, drugs women and new life his new career delivers, Mike ignores the warning signs and, with circumstances spiralling way out of control, is eventually forced to make a life-changing decision, the repercussions of which will affect everyone close to him.

Airborne - On DVD 30 Jul 2012
As a severe storm front rapidly closes in on the UK, all flights out of East Midlands airport are cancelled – all save Atlantic Sky Airways Flight 686, bound for New York. Shortly after take-off, several passengers become concerned when one of their number inexplicably goes missing. Their anxieties are further increased when it becomes apparent that the flight has veered off course and it is revealed that the plane is carrying an interesting item of cargo: a rare and extremely valuable ancient Chinese vase. The assumption is that terrorists are responsible, but nobody on board is showing their hand – for now. With tensions rising amongst the passengers and crew, violence soon breaks out, forcing those behind the deadly plot to expose their identities.

Meanwhile, on the ground, concerned aviation chiefs and the military have together authorised the launch of fighter jets to deal with what they believe could be a deadly hijack situation. But hijacking is soon proved to be the least of anybody’s worries when the owner of the vase recounts a myth surrounding its ancient origins.

CHARIOTS OF FIRE - OPENING SCENE
It may have been released 31 years ago but it hasn’t lost a modicum of its power, whist Mr Bean may have had us chuckling here is the original, despite being a low quality bootleg Vangelis theme is still one of the most rousing and emotive pieces of music in film.

Video: The Chariots of Fire - movie, opening scene

Chariots of Fire tells the story of two very different men who compete as runners in the 1924 Paris Olympics:

Eric Liddell is a devout Christian who believes that his athletic abilities are a gift from God, and that using that gift to its fullest extent - to win the gold medal - will be his way of repaying that gift.

Harold Abrahams is an English Jew, a student at Cambridge, who dreams of fame and of proving to his anti-Semitic fellow students, and to the world, that Jews are in no respect inferior.

Their motives are noble. Their commitment is total. Their integrity is unquestionable. They will both make personal sacrifices to achieve their goals. In the process, through all the obstacles and personal issues they conquer, they prove that striving for victory in their own terms is, perhaps, its own reward.

Based on a true story, CHARIOTS OF FIRE was the winner of four Academy Awards®, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, in addition to receiving nominations for three more.

Chariots of Fire will be re-released into cinemas on July 13th

EAST END FILM STUDENT GETS 3-D FILM TRAINING THANKS TO ROMANIAN FILM INITIATIVE
One lucky youngster from Newham has won a place on a unique 3-D camera training course.  Jamie Fisher took part in the recent East Meets East film workshop, a joint initiative from the Romanian Cultural Institute and Four Corners centre in Bethnal Green and mentored by leading Romanian filmmakers.  As a direct result of being Director of Photography on the short documentary which screened at the East End Film Festival, he was invited to join the three-day intensive 3-D course which is intended for experienced industry professionals only.

Having lived in Newham all his life, Jamie originally studied fine art at Chelsea College of Art before pursuing his love of film at Skillset Academy London College of Communication.  He has subsequently been developing a number of genre-led films and now the 3-D training puts him at the cutting edge of the industry.

LOVEBITE AND TWISTED MINDS ANNOUNCED AS THIS YEAR’S M&C SAATCHI FILMHACK CHALLENGE WINNERS
See the winners films here: LoveBite: http://youtu.be/RmqcO2NRFJY and  Twisted Minds (Trailer): http://goo.gl/d5Exs

M&C Saatchi is proud to announce LoveBite and Twisted Minds as the winners of its first ever 48 hour Filmhack.

Filmhack, born from the success of the companies’ recent Game5hack initiative, is a unique creative challenge between M&C Saatchi, Youtube, Google, Goldsmiths University and Motorola. The challenge involved six teams making a short film across two days, with a camera phone and no budget.

There were two prizes awarded at Google HQ on Friday evening; the Grand Jury Prize, bestowed to the best overall film, and the Audience Award, presented for the film that received the highest combined TrueViews (full trailer views), full film views as well as best online sentiment. Both prizes had a £1000 prize fund.

The winner of the Grand Jury Prize was feel good rom-com LoveBite which won the judges hearts as the film was awarded the Grand Jury Prize on Friday evening. The team worked hard promoting their film across the web, successfully securing a tweet of support from Diet Coke and mentions in film forums, blogs and local media.

Alex Stoltz, Distribution and Exhibition at the BFI (British Film Institute) and FilmHack judge said: “LoveBite crammed so much heart into just two minutes with a charming central performance and good use of music. Winning in every way!”

The Audience Award was presented to Twisted Minds after reaching a huge total of 29,045 views within three weeks. The film’s promotional campaign included ambient marketing tactics such as dropping QR codes into East London copies of the Metro and Evening Standard.

Hamish Nicklin, Head of Creative Agency Partnerships at Google added: “All the films performed really well and demonstrated a true understanding of what makes an ad successful on YouTube. This is outstanding given that these films were made with 2xmobiles, limited sound and lighting kit, zero budget and in under 48 hours.”

Teams were made up of M&C Saatchi employees from across the Group, students and filmmakers of the future, from the Goldsmiths MA Filmmaking and MA Screen Documentary courses, as well as actors from the Drama and Theatre Arts course. Each team had a fair distribution of creative, technical and acting skillsets.

The judging panel included:
-       Mark Goodwin – Deputy Creative Director, M&C Saatchi
-       James King – Creative Director, Motorola
-       Chris Quigly/Will Cooke – Founders Viral Ad Network/Rubber Republic
-       Robert Smith – Convenor of MA Filmmaking at Goldsmiths
-       Alex Stoltz, Distribution and Exhibition at the BFI (British Film Institute)
-       Beatrice Pembroke, Head of the Creative Economy unit of the British Council

Filmhack took place on the 28th and 29th June, with the final prize announced was on the 20th July.

Be transported to India on Wednesday 8th August when the mini international film festival opens with an enchanting and colourful performance from a Bollywood dance troupe to set the scene for a well-loved film set in India.  St Martin’s Courtyard’s very own Bombay café Dishoom will be serving warming naughty chai made with Baileys or whisky from a pop-up bar.

St Martin’s Courtyard is Covent Garden’s newest shopping and dining destination with a unique mix of fashion, beauty and lifestyle boutiques and flagships and six international restaurants.  Many shops will be open until 8pm for a pre screening shopping spree and many of the restaurants will be offering late supper deals after the film is finished.

REC GENESIS PREMIERES TO PREMIERE AT FRIGHTFEST
REC Genesis, the long-awaited and highly anticipated third instalment of the planned four-part REC saga has finally arrived, coming to DVD and Blu-ray on 3 September 2012 (after premiering at Film4 FrightFest on 24 August) - and it's more than worth the wait!

Paco Plaza, co-writer and co-director of the first two films (along with Jaume Belaguero) goes it alone for this outing, breathing new life into proceedings by taking things in a whole new direction. It's a direction I love, being much closer in tone to ‘Shaun of the Dead’ and ‘Army of Darkness’ with its zom-rom-com elements. The result is a surprisingly scary, funny and touching horror film with some seriously iconic imagery - if only all brides carried chainsaws!

Video: The Establishing Shot: [REC]³ Genesis UK Trailer Released - REC 3 Genesis

As the families and friends of Koldo and Clara gather outside the church in the bright Spanish sunshine just prior to the happy couple’s wedding, it seems that nothing could possibly cast a shadow on such a beautiful and joyous occasion. But when some of the guests start behaving oddly during the reception, it becomes apparent that all is not well. Disturbed by the way the interrogation is conducted by the domineering Inspector Curti (Ennio Fantastichini, Loose Cannons); Gaia demands that the lights are switched on. Only upon seeing Wang, does Gaia realise why the job has come with so much mystery and subterfuge. And that she may be in way over her head…

CHARIOTS OF FIRE - THE FORGOTTEN FACTS
As Chariots Of Fire returns to cinemas in the UK this weekend, film critics & the media appear to have forgotten that without the financial involvement of Mohamed Al Fayed, Chariots Of Fire would never have been made!

Chariots Of Fire was co-produced and financed by Allied Stars, the film production company run by the late Dodi Al Fayed which also produced and financed Breaking Glass, FX, FX:2, Hook, The Scarlet Letter and Peter Pan.

Video: The Establishing Shot: Chariots Of Fire remastered new Trailer

Commenting on Dodi’s involvement in Chariots Of Fire, his father Mohammed said: “When Dodi first came across the script for Chariots Of Fire, it had been collecting dust on a shelf at Goldcrest because no-one else wanted to invest in it. But Dodi was a filmmaker of real vision and when he showed me the script, I knew it was something very special.”

“Chariots Of Fire was unlike any other film being made at the time; a story of loyalty, determination and standing up for what you believe in; refusing to be knocked down when everyone around you wants you to fail. These were principles Dodi and I shared. Principles I have lived my life by. There was no question, we wanted this story to come to life in film and put the money forward so it could be made.”

Based on a true story, CHARIOTS OF FIRE was the winner of four Academy Awards®, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, in addition to receiving nominations for three more.

Mohamed adds: “The evening of the 1981 Oscars, was one of the proudest nights of my life; it was the night that a film my son Dodi had had the foresight to back, won four Oscars, including Best Film and Best Original Screenplay. Chariots Of Fire would never have been made if it hadn’t been for Dodi, its executive producer.”

As an Egyptian, Mohamed understood Harold Abrahams' struggle to triumph over British racism and snobbery and warmed to Eric Liddell's refusal to compromise his conscience.

The first British film to win four Oscars would never have seen a cinema without Egyptian vision and money and as Chariots Of Fire producer David Puttnam said in his Oscar acceptance speech “ thank you Dodi and Mohamed for putting your money where my mouth was “.

20th Century Fox will bring a new digitally re-mastered version of the film to over 100 cinema screens nationwide on July 13th thanks to BFI funding.

Mohamed Al Fayed said: “I hope you will take the time to go to see it in cinemas. If you do, you will be in for a treat. Through this incredible true story you will see that with courage and character you can overcome literally anything.”

MOMENTUM PICTURES PRESENT SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS A FILM BY MARTIN MCDONAGH
Starring: Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Abbie Cornish, Olga Kurylenko

Momentum Pictures, an Alliance Films company, is proud to announce that Martin McDonagh's highly anticipated second feature film, SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS will be released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on 7th December 2012.

From Oscar®-winning Writer and Director Martin McDonagh comes a star studded, blood-drenched, black comedy which follows a group of oddball friends who inadvertently find themselves entangled in Los Angeles' criminal underworld after stealing the beloved Schi-Tzu of one dangerous gangster.

Marty (Farrell) is a struggling writer who dreams of finishing his screenplay, 'Seven Psychopaths'. All he needs is a little focus and inspiration. Billy (Rockwell) is Marty's best friend, an unemployed actor and part time dog thief, who wants to help Marty by any means necessary. Hans (Walken) is Billy's partner in crime. SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS stars Colin Farrell (IN BRUGES) as Marty, Sam Rockwell (MOON) as Billy, with Christopher Walken (TRUE ROMANCE) playing Hans and finally Woody Harrelson (NATURAL BORN KILLERS) as Charlie. Complimenting this sterling male cast are Abbie Cornish (LIMITLESS) and Olga Kurylenko (QUANTUM OF SOLACE).

PETER JACKSON’S LONG-AWAITED FILMED ADAPTATION OF THE HOBBIT TO BE A TRILOGY
New Line Cinema, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, and Warner Bros. Pictures Announce Third Film in The Hobbit Trilogy

Peter Jackson will make a third film in his upcoming adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, it was jointly announced today by Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Operating Officer, New Line
Cinema, Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officers, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, and Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

Jackson, the Academy Award®-winning filmmaker behind the blockbuster “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy, recently wrapped principal photography on what he originally planned to be a two-film adaptation of The Hobbit, which is set in Middle-earth 60 years before The Lord of the Rings.

Jackson stated, “Upon recently viewing a cut of the first film, and a chunk of the second, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and I were very pleased with the way the story was coming together. We recognized that the richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, gave rise to a simple question: do we tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as filmmakers and fans was an unreserved ‘yes.’ We know the strength of our cast and of the characters they have brought to life.  We know creatively how compelling and engaging the story can be and—lastly, and most importantly—we know how much of the tale of Bilbo Baggins, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur would remain untold if we did not fully realize this complex and wonderful adventure. I’m delighted that New Line, MGM and Warner Bros. are equally enthusiastic about bringing fans this expansive tale across three films.”

Emmerich stated, “We completely support Peter and his vision for bringing this grand adventure to the screen over the course of three films. Peter, Fran and Philippa’s reverence for the material and understanding of these characters ensure an exciting and expanded journey that is bound to please fans around the world.”

“With the abundance of rich material, we fully endorse the decision to further develop what Peter, Fran and Philippa have already begun. We are confident that, with the great care the filmmakers have taken to faithfully bring this journey to the screen, the film will be welcomed by the legions of fans across the globe,” said Barber and Birnbaum.
Robinov added, “Peter, Fran and Philippa have lived in this world and understand more than anyone its tremendous breadth and scope, and the relationships that bind it together.  We strongly support their vision to bring this great work fully to life.”

The first film in the trilogy, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” will be released December 14, 2012, with the second film releasing on December 13, 2013, and the third film slated for summer 2014. All three films will be released in 3D and 2D in select theatres and IMAX.

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes three films based on The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. The trilogy of films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar®-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, the character he played in “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield.  Returning cast members from “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy also include Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, and Andy Serkis as “Gollum.”  The international ensemble cast also includes (in alphabetical order) John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Billy Connolly, Luke Evans, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Barry Humphries, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Evangeline Lilly, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, and Aidan Turner.

The screenplay for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is by Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson & Guillermo del Toro.  Jackson is also producing the film, together with Carolynne Cunningham, Zane Weiner and Fran Walsh. The executive producers are Alan Horn, Toby Emmerich, Ken Kamins and Carolyn Blackwood, with Boyens and Eileen Moran serving as co-producers.
Under Jackson’s direction, all three movies are being shot in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Additional filming, as with principal photography, is taking place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.

Fred Ritzenberg of FAR Films initially developed Zaytoun with Eran Riklis. Gareth Unwin, CEO of Bedlam Productions, boarded after being pitched the script during DIFF 2010.  The script was penned by first time writer Palestinian scribe Nader Rizq.  Dan Laustsen served as director of photography (Silent Hill, Solomon Kane) and Herve Schneid was the editor (Amélie, Delicatessen).

Zaytoun is the story of the unlikely alliance between a 12 year-old Palestinian refugee and an Israeli fighter pilot shot down over Beirut in 1982. Their initial distrust develops into friendship as they make their way across war torn Lebanon on a journey to a place they both call home.

International sales rights are being handled by Pathé, who will also distribute the film in France. United King is handling Israeli distribution rights.  Zaytoun is the first film to take advantage of the newly ratified UK-Israel Film Coproduction Treaty.

Director Eran Riklis said, “Zaytoun is a road movie, a war movie, a buddy movie. I wanted it to be serious and yet full of humour, realistic and yet a fantasy, true to the region and yet universal. I believe the result is all of the above with my view of the fragile, explosive, pessimistic, seldom optimistic fabric of the Middle East and its never ending conflicts.”

Producers Gareth Unwin and Fred Ritzenberg said, “We are delighted to have been selected for Toronto this year.  Zaytoun has been a truly international collaboration from the beginning, and so it is fantastic to now have a platform to present it at one of the most prestigious international film festivals in the world.”

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES TAKES £1 MILLION IN ADVANCE BOOKING AT BFI IMAX, BREAKING ALL PREVIOUS SALES RECORDS
Over 60,000 tickets bought and 43 shows sold out so far

London’s BFI IMAX cinema announces today that it has now sold 62,300 tickets for The Dark Knight Rises – The IMAX Experience, grossing £1,001,300, two days ahead of the film’s opening this Friday 20 July.
Since tickets went on sale five weeks ago, thousands of Batman fans have been snapping them up to ensure they see the film in the best possible way – on Britain’s biggest screen.
The figures for both the advance box office gross and the number of tickets sold have beaten the cinema’s previous best-ever advance sales, which were for Avatar in December 2009 (£607,000 sales for 47,000 tickets).
The Dark Knight Rises also broke BFI IMAX records for highest first day sales ever (24,754 tickets grossing £409,838) and the highest first week sales ever (38,658 tickets grossing £634,013). Both these records were previously held by Prometheus.
43 shows are now sold out, including screenings for early birds at 04.25 and 04.55 this weekend.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ The Dark Knight Rises is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

Nolan is utilising IMAX cameras even more extensively than he did on The Dark Knight, which had marked the first time ever that a major feature film was partially shot with IMAX cameras. Over an hour of the footage from the film is in IMAX format, with the image filling the giant screen.

Dennis Laws, General and Technical Manager, BFI IMAX comments: “These figures prove that seeing The Dark Knight Rises in IMAX, to truly experience Christopher Nolan’s incredible vision for the film, is an unmissable event this summer. People are even flying in from abroad especially to see the film at BFI IMAX. We want as many people as possible to be able to see it, so we’re already adding extra shows to meet the demand.”

Tickets can be bought online at www.bfi.org.uk/imax or from the box office Tel: 020 7199 6000. This week it was announced that in a new concession agreement ODEON will take on a range of services from the BFI for BFI IMAX. From 19 July 2012 tickets will be available via www.odeon.co.uk or Tel: 0330 333 7878.

'STREET FIGHTER®’ LIVE-ACTION SERIES ANNOUNCED AT SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON 2012
Capcom USA, Inc. and Assassin's Fist Limited have signed an agreement to produce a live-action series based on Capcom®'s successful Street Fighter® game franchise.

To be called 'Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist', this thrilling, multi layered series will take the audience back to the formative years of the iconic characters, Ryu and Ken, as they live a traditional warrior’s life in secluded Japan. The boys are, unknowingly, the last practitioners of the ancient fighting style known as ‘Ansatsuken’ (Assassin’s Fist). The series follows them as they learn about the mysterious past of their Master, Gouken, and the tragic and dark legacy of the Ansatsuken style. Can their destiny be changed…or will history repeat itself?

'Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist', the brain-child of Joey Ansah, is being brought to the screen by the core team behind the hugely successful fan movie 'Street Fighter: Legacy'.

"Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist will be what fans have been waiting for. Legacy was a taster; a glimpse of what a live-action Street Fighter should be," said Joey Ansah, announcing the movie. “This takes the story right back to the start - the origins and motivations of Ryu, Ken, Gouken and Akuma. This will become the definitive back-story from which further epic adventures will follow.”

'Street Fighter: Legacy' received a rapturous reception from fans and critics, becoming one of the most successful YouTube movies of all time in the film & animation category, with over 8 million views. Christian Howard, who starred as 'Ken' in 'Legacy' and has co-written the script for 'Assassin's Fist' with Joey Ansah, said, "Our priority is to stay true to the appearance, fighting techniques and canon of the Street Fighter game. At the same time we’ve managed to make this an emotion and character driven story, which will surprise viewers who might just be expecting a super faithful fight fest!."

The series is being produced by Jacqueline Quella, whose previous projects include 'Romanzo Criminale' (Crime Novel); Academy Award nominated 'Don't Tell'; and Tobe Hooper's ‘The Toolbox Murders'.

The series will be directed by Joey Ansah who, as 'Desh’, was part of one of the most celebrated movie fight scenes of all time, in 'The Bourne Ultimatum'; and was recently at the heart of the action in 'Snow White and the Huntsman'; and is in the forthcoming ‘The Numbers Station’ with John Cusack.

The series was announced by Capcom's Producer for Street Fighter, Yoshinori Ono at Comic-Con 2012 (San Diego), and will be distributed worldwide by Content Media Corporation for a release in 2013.

PECCADILLO TAKES UK/IRELAND FOR HIT SO HARD
UK film distributor Peccadillo Pictures have acquired UK and Irish rights to P. David Ebersole’s vivacious music documentary HIT SO HARD, chronicling the life and near death story of drummer Patty Schemel from the rock band Hole.  The film is produced by Todd Hughes and Christina Soletti.

Featuring never before seen footage of the band in the early 1990s, including home videos of rock legend Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, HIT SO HARD has played at major worldwide film festivals including SXSW, Outfest, Frameline and this year’s BFI LLGFF.

Video: Hit So Hard Trailer (HD)

When Nirvana burst onto the scene in 1991, the music they played spoke directly to an angry and disenfranchised generation. Grunge took over MTV and radio overnight… but just three years later, the drug-related deaths of several musicians and the suicide of Kurt Cobain closed the books on an all too brief era. Patty Schemel, the acclaimed drummer for Courtney Love's seminal rock band Hole, was in the middle of all of it. The openly gay woman who always felt different never dreamed she would be in a multi-platinum band, touring with legends… or that, thanks to drug addiction, she could lose it all. Given a video camera just before Hole's infamous Live Through This world tour, Patty filmed everything; the shows, the parties, and startlingly intimate footage of Kurt and Courtney. This footage has never been seen... until now.

Directed by P. David Ebersole, HIT SO HARD is a harrowing tale of overnight success, the cost of addiction, and ultimately, recovery and redemption. Featuring music from Hole, Nirvana and grunge legends Sonic Youth, HIT SO HARD is an all-access backstage pass to the music that shaped a generation.

Peccadillo MD Tom Abell states that “it’s been 18 years since I worked with David on his first film, DEATH IN VENICE, CA and we are delighted to be working with David again on such a fabulous documentary about one of the most intriguing and important women in rock music history.  Peccadillo Pictures have accumulated an impressive back catalogue of documentaries, and we’re proud to add HIT SO HARD to the collection”.

Hit So Hard will screen at the Leeds Music Festival on Sunday August 26th 2012 with a theatrical release set for October.

THE ESTABLISHING SHOT: ONLINE NEWS
THE SPACE RELEASES KURSK A FILM AVAILABLE TO WATCH FOR FREE ON THE SPACE FROM WED 1ST AUG
A new film of the play Kursk, inspired by the Russian submarine disaster in August 2000, is available to watch free on digital arts service The Space from today 1 August.

The story is inspired by the devastating event in 2000 when the Russian submarine Kursk suffered a huge explosion, and sank with all on board. Set on a Royal Navy hunter-killer submarine, sent to spy on the Kursk on its final fateful mission in 2000, the play follows five British crew members who live and serve under extreme pressure, hidden beneath the waves.

Fuel has produced this adaptation in collaboration with Skins and Cast Offs director Amanda Boyle and Top Boy cinematographer Tat Radcliffe, inventively adapting this landmark production to film for an online audience.

Kursk played to packed houses and received rave reviews twice at London’s Young Vic, on UK tour and most recently at Sydney Opera House. It was nominated for Best Touring Production TMA Award, Best Off West End Production at the Whatsonstage Awards 2009 and Best Design at the Evening Standard Awards 2009.

In the stage production, Jon Bausor’s groundbreaking immersive design combined with Sound&Fury’s bold sound and Hansjörg Schmidt’s lighting placed the audience at the centre of the action in an intricately realised submarine. The team worked in close consultation with former submariners and naval psychologists to simulate the intense environment of life on board a submarine. The film, which has been shot on Bausor’s set, also places the viewer at the heart of the action, using innovative cinematography to capture the unique feel of the live play.

The cast includes Sound&Fury’s Tom Espiner as well as Ian Ashpitel, Keir Charles, Laurence Mitchell and Jonah Russell.

The Space will also be streaming four new plays live from the Edinburgh Festival on 19 August.

THE ESTABLISHING SHOT: LAUGH OF THE WEEK

Video:The Sweeney | Orange UK

The Sweeney Gold Spot launches into cinemas nationwide from Friday 3 August
London, UK – 1 August 2012 – Orange today announced that The Sweeney’s crime-fighting duo, Jack Regan (Ray Winstone) and George Carter (Ben Drew), are set to star in the latest instalment of the Orange Gold Spot series, which will premier in cinemas nationwide on Friday 3rd of August.

The new Gold Spot opens with Regan and Carter walking into an East End pub, ‘The Dog and Bone’, in search of a ‘potential target’. From the moment they step inside they immediately sense that trouble is brewing as a series of unusual clues unfold in front of their eyes, including Orange beer taps aptly named ‘Texters Brew’ and ‘Voicemail Ale’, a Bluetooth head set on Victorian painting of a lady, and the barmaid filing her orange nails at the bar. The Gold Spot climaxes with everyone in the pub staring at the dynamic pair, whilst singing the lyrics to the Electric Light Orchestra classic, Telephone Line. This gets all too much for Regan and Carter and they abandon their mission - fleeing the pub. As they do, a message reminds cinema goers to switch off their mobile phones before the film begins.

Regan said: “We only came in ‘cos Haskins gave us a lead on a target but we had no choice but to leave once they all started singing at us. Not a typical day for The Sweeney.”

Carter added: “Can’t believe we’ve been framed by Orange, I knew something was going down when the darts player asked me to call him.”

Spencer McHugh, Brand Director at Orange UK: “It’s been fantastic teaming up with Regan and Carter, two of Britain’s most iconic detectives in what must be one of their most bizarre stakeouts yet. The Sweeney is set to be one of the biggest British box office hits of the year, so we’re sure that Orange customers and cinema-goers alike will really enjoy seeing what would have happened if Orange had been involved”.

The Gold Spot was produced by creative agency Fallon in collaboration with Orange and Vertigo Films.

The Sweeney Gold Spot is part of Orange’s ongoing association with film, which includes the highly successful Orange Wednesdays. Previous Orange Gold Spot campaigns include stars from films such as The Expendables 2, The Muppets, The A-Team and actors Spike Lee and Jack Black.

Sometimes you have to act like a criminal to catch a criminal. Ray Winstone (The Departed) and Ben Drew (Plan B) star as part of an elite police unit in explosive action film, THE SWEENEY. Also starring Damian Lewis (Homeland) and Hayley Atwell (Captain America:
The First Avenger), THE SWEENEY will be released in cinemas nationwide from September 12.

THE ESTABLISHING SHOT BOOK NEWS

Three legends - Monroe by Mailer and Stern
“This book is really two books. It is a biography, and it is also a pictorial retrospective of an actress whose greatest love affair was conceivably with the camera,” wrote Norman Mailer in his 1973 biography, Marilyn.

Now TASCHEN has paired Mailer’s original text with Bert Stern’s photographs from the legendary Last Sitting—widely considered the most intimate photographs of Monroe ever taken—to create a fitting tribute to the woman who, at the time of her death in 1962, was the world’s most famous, a symbol of glamour and eroticism for an entire generation. But though she was feted and adored by her public, her private life was that of a little girl lost, desperate to find love and security. Mailer’s Marilyn is beautiful, tragic, and complex. As Mailer reflects upon her life—from her bleak childhood through to the mysterious circumstances of her death—she emerges as a symbol of the bizarre decade during which she reigned as Hollywood’s greatest female star.

This book, conceived by Lawrence Schiller, Mailer’s collaborator on five works, combines the author’s masterful text with Stern’s penetrating images of the 36-year-old Marilyn. Photographed for Vogue magazine over three days at the Bel-Air Hotel, Marilyn had never allowed such unfettered access, nor had she looked so breathtakingly beautiful. Six weeks later, mysteriously, she was dead. In this bold synthesis of literary classic and legendary portrait sitting, Mailer and Stern lift the veils of confusion surrounding Monroe—the woman, the star, the sex symbol—and offer profound insight into an iconic figure whose true personality remains an enigma even today.

First published as a TASCHEN limited collector’s edition, this book is now available in a popular hardcover version, published on 50th anniversary of Bert Stern’s Last Sitting and of Marilyn Monroe’s death, August 5, 1962.

Directed by Malik Bendjelloul. This fascinating documentary follows two South African friends as they attempt to track down Detroit singer-songwriter Sixto Diaz Rodriguez and see if rumours of his untimely death are true. Rodriguez’s Dylan-esque music provides a stirring soundtrack to a moving tale of talent eventually receiving its well-earned reward.

A few years pass before a sudden attraction shakes her from her melancholy with a spontaneous and unexpected kiss with her co-worker Markus (François Damien: Heartbreaker), a hulking gap-toothed swede big on heart, but small on social skills who her friends soon make plain is more than a little ‘below her league’.  The two then embark upon their own journey of recovery, as it begins to become apparent it’s not other’s perceptions so much as their own self doubt that threatens to split this seemingly mismatched pairing apart.

Video: A Simple Life - (2011) Trailer

Ah Tao (Deanie Ip) has served a Hong Kong household for 40 years, and now that most of the family have emigrated to the US, she remains as the dutiful maid to Roger, the youngest son (Andy Lau), sharing his compact apartment. One day Roger comes home from work to find that Ah Tao has suffered a stroke. He rushes her to hospital, where she announces that she wants to retire and move to a nursing home. As the days go by, and Ah Toa‘s health starts to deteriorate, the tables are turned and Roger slowly transforms from the detached single man to the devoted carer of an elderly servant, as if she were his mother.
