Tarsem Singh Sony Experia Z advert holi festivalTarsem Singh or Tarsem as he is known, might be best recognised for the other Snow White film Mirror Mirror and the Henry Cavill 3D extravaganza Immortals but before these mostly style over substance pieces he was known for his visually stunning and ground breaking tales Fall and the Jennifer Lopez genre bending The Cell.

He is also the man behind the visually arresting music videos Sweet Lullaby for Deep Forest and the award winning Losing My Religion for R.E.M amongst others. He has created a number of high profile adverts for top tier brands and arguably his most  memorable work to date is the catchy We Will Rock You advert for Pepsi starring Enrique Iglesias, Britney Spears, Beyonce and Pink. Tarsem's style is a bold mix of world driven motifs and vivid colourful imagery. The kind of vivid colourful imagery that is a running theme in Sony's ad campaigns - most noticeably the Bouncy Balls advert for their Bravia TV division. Well someone over at Sony made the connection and Tarsem was commissioned to create a piece that emotively bridges Sony's heritage of iconic technology with their new water-and dust resistant Sony Xperia Z phone, while spanning the globe and connecting users.

The song used to soundtrack the video is a remix of David Bowie's 1977 Sound and Vision by DJ Sonjay Prabhakar. David Bowie's official Facebook page had this to say about the remix:
"The remix strips the song right back to Bowie‘s original vocal which is accompanied by a beautiful piano part, lending a completely new flavour to the 1977 Low outtake."

The launch of our new flagship Xperia Z smartphone marks a milestone as it truly brings together the innovative Sony technology, entertainment and connected experiences into a single device.

By utilising the talents of celebrated director Tarsem Singh, the campaign takes consumers on a colourful journey to experience the vibrancy and excitement of the Holi festival in India. Every year thousands converge to witness this festival of colour with its explosion of coloured powders and water, creating the perfect setting for the Xperia Z smartphone, with its water-and dust resistant design, to beautifully capture, share and enjoy this visual spectacle. Tarsem’s stunning visuals have been perfectly complemented by David Bowie’s aptly titled classic track ‘Sound and Vision’ which was specially remixed by Sonjay Prabhakar.”

The Advert was shot in Los Angeles and at the Holi Festival also known as The Festival of Colour at the Galtaji Temple, Jaipur, India. Sony put their money where there mouth is by giving Director of Photography  Brendan Galvin a Xperia Z which he used to film the behind the scenes videos.

The global campaign was officially debuted during the premier mobile industry trade show Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Visitors to Sony’s stand can see demonstrations of the new and highly anticipated Xperia Z smartphone and Xperia Tablet Z – showcasing the best of Sony innovation including sleek designs, Full HD displays, cutting-edge camera technologies, One-touch functions for content sharing and connectivity, and unique water and dust resistant technology. I have a Sony Xperia Z in my left hand as I write this and it is sweet and available now.

David Bowie Sound And Vision Lyrics
Ahhh...
Ahhh...

Doo, doo, doo, do-doh
Doo, doo, doo, do-doh

Don't you wonder sometimes
'Bout sound and vision

Blue, blue, electric blue
That's the colour of my room
Where I will live
Blue, blue

Pale blinds drawn all day
Nothing to do, nothing to say
Blue, blue

I will sit right down, waiting for the gift of sound and vision
And I will sing, waiting for the gift of sound and vision
Drifting into my solitude, over my head

Don't you wonder sometimes
'Bout sound and vision
