Watch Clive Owen in BMW The Escape15 years ago, mid 2001 BMW Films released the first of its Hire short films Executive Produced by David Fincher and starring Clive Owen as The Driver -  Ambush, a 6 minute short film directed by the legendary John Frankenheimer, known for his action drama as much as he is for high velocity car chases, perhaps the most apt choice to kick off a series of films based around high performance vehicles.

Soon after 4 more short films followed; Ang Lee's Chosen, Kar-Wai Wong's The Follow, Guy Ritchie's Star and Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Powder Keg.

For the second season Tony and Ridley Scott picked up the reigns to produce: John Woo's Hostage, Tony Scott's unforgettable (and perhaps the pinnacle of the Hire Series) Beat the Devil based on an original David Fincher concept and starring James Brown and Gary Oldman alongside Clive Owen.

Decades ago, the legendary James Brown sold his soul to the devil for fame and fortune. Now he wishes to renegotiate. Hired to take Mr. Brown to a rendezvous with the devil (Gary Oldman), the driver soon finds himself entangled in fiendish plans.

The second series culminated in late 2002 with the eighth and final film Joe Carnahan's Ticker also based on a David Fincher idea.

Launched in 2001, BMW Films' "The Hire" was a series of eight groundbreaking online short films starring Clive Owen as an enigmatic driver for hire.

Each film was a unique story, with David Fincher and Ridley and Tony Scott acting as executive producers. The films were helmed by acclaimed directors John Frankenheimer, Ang Lee, Wong Kar Wai, Guy Ritchie, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, John Woo, Joe Carnahan and Tony Scott, and featured stars like Madonna, Gary Oldman, Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, F. Murray Abraham and James Brown.

Available only online and released four years before the invention of YouTube, the films were critically-acclaimed and fifteen years later still have a cult following.

Well here we are some 14 years later and earlier this month BMW Films surprised us with the release of  a trailer for The Escape a ninth Hire short film directed by Neill Blomkamp.

Amidst the chaos, Molgen’s head mercenary Holt (Jon Bernthal) is sneaking out the last living clone, a young woman named Lily (Dakota Fanning) to a mysterious buyer. Holt has hired The Driver (Clive Owen), accompanied by a heavily armed squadron of fellow Molgen mercenaries, to evade the authorities and deliver Lily and himself to the buyer. The journey takes an unexpected turn and Holt is forced to take matters into his own hands, as the driver once again demonstrates his mettle and extraordinary driving skills.
