T o celebrate the upcoming release of the new Tom Hardy and Tom Hardy starrer Legend into UK cinemas on 9 September. StudioCanal are bringing an exciting and iconic LEGEND OF THE EAST END Exhibition to the heart of the East End 28th August - 11th September 2015.

We have been quietly anticipating director Brian Helgeland's tale of the notorious 60s London crime lords - The Kray twins for awhile now. Helgeland has been building up a varied and impressive portfolio of work including being involved in the writing or adaptation of; Paul Greengrass' Green Zone, Tony Scott's Man on Fire, Richard Donner's Conspiracy Theory, Clint Eastwood's Mystic River & Curtis Hanson's superbe 50s crime thriller L.A. Confidential. as well as directing corkers like; A Knight's Tale and the Mel Gibson remake of John Boorman's phenomenal Point Blank - Payback.

To be fair I'm not a particular fan of straight up 50/60s British crime thrillers they always seem to unsuccessfully offset downbeat kitchen sink realism with tinsel glamour. There are of course notable exceptions, one of them being Paul McGuigan's much underrated Gangster No. 1. Yet despite being a peak in modern art, music, fashion and culture with Britain bouncing back after World War II the swinging sixties struggles to be framed as an attractive period in film. But Helgeland's work on Payback and L.A. Confidential are more than enough to have me very interested in seeing what he does with 60s London.

It looks like Brian Helgeland is already bringing his A game as he has managed to assemble an incredibly talented, and very strong, craft oriented cast for Legend. Which includes; Emily Browning, Paul Bettany, Taron Egerton, Chazz Palminteri, Christopher Eccleston and the legend that is Mr. David Thewlis - which will no doubt be a key strength of the film, particularly with performers having to bounce off Tom Hardy in what may be a career re-defining performance for him, in the dual roles of Ronnie and Reggie Kray.

In a quirk Legend pulls former Gangster No. 1 co-stars David Thewlis and Paul Bettany back into the 60s London underworld.

In the 1960s, they were widely seen as prosperous and charming celebrity nightclub owners and were part of the Swinging London scene. A large part of their fame was due to their non-criminal activities as popular figures on the celebrity circuit, being photographed by David Bailey* on more than one occasion; and socialising with lords, MPs, socialites and show business characters including actors George Raft, Judy Garland, Diana Dors, Barbara Windsor and singer Frank Sinatra. - From Wikepedia

Jack Falls review and Premiere Report

It's hard to make a film. Harder to make a film with low budget, even harder still to make it look easy. But the Jack team clearly has the passion and drive that it takes to take an idea and get it in front of an audience.

You may not have heard of the Jack Trilogy; they are local guys on a local budget and yet they have managed to pull together an extraordinary pool of talent to make Jack Falls the third and biggest film in the Jack series so far.

Jack started as a Frank Miller influenced graphic novel by Paul Tanter. Who with a small team made their first film in 2008 based on the comic - Jack Says.

Waking up in London with amnesia next to a dead body, Jack Adleth has just enough time and sense to disappear before the police arrive. In an attempt to lay low, he heads to Paris to visit an ex girlfriend he can't remember. But a guy like Jack attracts trouble, and an encounter with the mysterious Girl X draws him and the woman he loves back into a world he s trying hard to avoid... and to remember.

Jack Says is a gritty British gangster film shot in the contrary sophistication of a classic film noir. Simon Phillips plays Jack Adleth, a Scottish man who wakes up in London next to a dead body, but with no recollection of how he got there. On the run from the police, he ends up in Paris only to find that all his problems (including those he couldn't remember he had) have followed him there.

Jack Says is a contemporary film noir thriller and stars Simon Phillips, Rita Ramnani, Aurelie Amblard, Daniel Roberts with Rula Lenska, Mike Reid and Eric Cantona.

Before Guy Ritchie, before Danny Dyer the Long Good Friday met Mona Lisa in the highly stylised and critically acclaimed eighties clubland thriller Empire State (18) and to commemorate it's launch on Blu-ray and DVD there will be a special screening at the Genesis Cinema (Mile End) that will pack a punch. Jack Falls is the third film (and comic) in a trilogy following the adventures of undercover British policeman Jack Adleth .

Each subsequent film of the trilogy gets better. In the first Jack Says. Jack wakes up tied to a chair in a warehouse without any memory. But he seems to have evoked the wrath of the Guv'nor, who lectures him about 'losing respect'. We then follow Jack to Paris and the mysterious Girl X who draws him and the woman he loves back into a world he's trying hard to avoid and to remember.

In 2009's Jack Said we are introduced to Nathan, a member of a criminal gang headed by the notorious Guvnor (and his psychotic daughter Natalie). He befriends fellow gang member Jack Adleth who, unbeknownst to Nathan, is an undercover police officer. Nathan harbours a secret too and when he steals from the gangster family and goes underground he trusts Jack to look after his sister Erin. Inheriting Nathans role in the gang, Jack must now walk a fine line between his duty as a police officer and what is required of him by Natalie. As he falls in love with Erin, the lines between his real and assumed identities begin to blur and his conscience and loyalty are put to the test. The tension builds till Jack must regroup and then mete out his own brand of justice, fuelled by revenge, on the streets of Amsterdam.

Preview: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

We got to see Werner Herzog's re-imagining of Abel Ferrara's brilliant Bad Lieutenant at the London Film Festival 09 and loved it.

These are the types roles that Nicholas Cage excels at, that combined with Werner Herzog's sense of quirky make this an interesting delight. Although Herzog says he has never seen the original Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans plays well against Abel Ferrara's original version.

Terence McDonagh is one of the few cops left in town after a post-Katrina exodus, which is enough to get him promoted. Put in charge of investigating the brutal murder of a family, his moral compass gets lost, and his drug-induced behaviour becomes ever more erratic. Is he out of his depth or out of his mind? Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant was truly daring and brilliant, but it would be hard to argue that it was ever as much fun as Herzog's 're-imagining' turns out to be.

Freddy Frankham thought he was out of the gangland world – a retired boxer, Freddy now owns a successful “gentlemen’s” nightclub, but when a gang of Romanian drug dealers move into London, the stakes are too good to resist one last gamble. The gamble, of course, is a con. The deal is a lie. And the Romanians – are something else entirely … In the shadowed alleys and shuttered warehouses of London’s gangland, the key to all power is control – control of the streets, control of the clubs, control of the drugs and the women.

This is a truth which retired thug Freddy Frankham knows all too well. So when control of his little bit of the city is taken from him, in humiliating fashion, by Romanian émigré hard man Dante Livienko, Frankham knows he has limited time to redress the balance and resecure his kingdom, the Paradise Club, which Livienko has taken from Frankham in a deeply unfair boxing-match wager. In the boxing match, Dennis Christian (Freddy’s brother in law) is killed in the ring, and Freddy’s world comes apart. Frankham gets his boys together; his father in law Eddie Christian, the old faithful Lenny Kane, and young bucks Dex, Magoo and Chinnery, and they tool up with Frankham to take back the Paradise. With all guns blazing, Frankham’s mob hit the club, and put down the Romanians with lethal force. Or at least, it would be lethal force if the Romanians were as normal as they seem. Unfortunately, Livienko and his drug runners are more than meets the eye – vampires every one of them, and now Frankham and the boys are fighting for their lives in the newly-named Inferno club. While Freddy’s pregnant wife Jen faces a home-front assault from a lone vampire, the boys are picked off one by one, their own home turf now a deadly battleground, and there can be only one victor.

Michael owes money to Dublin's meanest gangster, Darren Perrier. When the debt is called in Brenda, Michael's recently "dumped" and suicidal best friend, accidentally shoots dead one of his goons. With every hard man in Dublin on their trail it looks like Michael won't make it through the next 24 hours; however, The Grim Reaper and a gang of savage dogs have a funny way of intervening.

Jim Broadbent stars alongside Cillian Murphy and Jodie Whittaker as three unlikely fugitives on the run from gangster supremo, Perrier, played by Brendan Gleeson, in this fast paced comedy-thriller set in Dublin. With only 24 hours to escape certain death, the trio must beat the clock, stay awake, and above all, pay Perrier’s bounty.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is the much-anticipated sequel to the indie cult classic, The Boondock Saints.

The film is the continuation of writer/director Troy Duffy’s tough, stylized cutting edge saga of the MacManus brothers (Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery). The two have been in deep hiding with their father, Il Duce (Billy Connolly), in the quiet valleys of Ireland, far removed from their former vigilante lives. When word comes that a beloved priest has been killed by sinister forces from deep within the mob, the brothers return to Boston to mount a violent and bloody crusade to bring justice to those responsible. With a new partner in crime (Clifton Collins Jr., Star Trek) and a sexy FBI operative (Julie Benz, TV's “Dexter”) hot on their trail…the Saints are back!

Troy Duffy is something of a hero to me, hugely inspirational he wrote Boondock Saints while working as a doorman at a bar in LA. And it's only through his sheer balls out perseverance overcoming an insurmountable number of obstacles that Boondock Saints the film got made. Look he's no Saint himself but as far as tenacity goes the guy deserves a medal of sorts.

The inspiration for the screenplay happened one day when he came home from his job to find a dead woman being wheeled out of a drug dealer's apartment across the hall. Duffy then rented a computer and wrote the screenplay for The Boondock Saints based on his disgust at what he saw.

“I decided right there that out of sheer frustration and not being able to afford a psychologist, I was going to write this, think about it. People watching the news sometimes get so disgusted by what they see. Susan Smith drowning her kids... guys going into McDonald's, lighting up the whole place. You hear things that disgust you so much that even if you're Mother Teresa, there comes a breaking point. One day you're gonna watch the news and you're gonna say, 'Whoever did that despicable thing should pay with their life. You think — for maybe just a minute — that whoever did that should die, without any fuckin' jury. I was going to give everybody that sick fantasy. And tell it as truthfully as I could."

Duffy's rise and subsequent decline is painfully documented in the gonzo documentary "Overnight".

The Boondock Saints was a relatively small film that didn't follow the traditional crime formula that with some clever camera work, great editing and top notch cast made it a real pleasure to watch. I'm happy to see Duffy overcome the odds again and pull Boondock Saints 2 out the bag. Over in the states the original Boondock Saints is getting a special one night only 10th Anniversary screening on March 11th to accompany the release of The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day on DVD.

It looks like All Saints Day has had limited screenings and will be released straight to DVD/Blu Ray, currently it doesn't have a release date for the UK. I'm sure it will make it's way over here. In the meantime you can find the the screenplay further below for your reading pleasure.

Boondock Saints 2 All Saints Day Screenplay

Noel Clarke, last years BAFTA 'Rising Star' leaked an UNOFFICIAL trailer for his new heist film 4.3.2.1. This follows on from the success of his directorial debut, Adulthood the sequel to Kidulthood which he wrote and starred in.

Information is still sketchy at the moment while 4.3.2.1 is still in post production but early hints are that 4.3.2.1 is an "unconventional heist movie based on the four different lives of four different girls, all somehow linked to the robbery".

This early cut trailer looks pretty good and has a real "Go" feel to it. Which I loved! Seems that Clarke is heading towards international cross over stardom with 4.3.2.1 . Just look at the cast he pulled together on this.

Revolver Entertainment are holding a charity screening of Wyclef Jean’s ‘Ghosts of Cite Soleil’ at the Electric Cinema on Friday 26th February in aid of Action Against Hunger’s emergency Haiti appeal.

The event will be hosted by Martine McCutcheon and Mica Paris and there will be a Q&A session with a film critic, an Aid specialist and a British documentary maker following the screening along with a charity auction.

Tickets are £15 (minimum donation) which includes a drink, popcorn and celebrity introduction, available via JustGiving

This ‘raw, painful documentary’ [The Observer] takes a gritty look at the reality of life in Haiti, produced by, and starring Haiti born musician Wyclef Jean.

Other celebrities confirmed to attend include Cerys Matthews, Charlie Brooks, Status Quo, Duran Duran, Boy George, Tazmin Outhwaite and Jenni Falconer.

The celebrity hosted screening will take place at 2pm on 26th February at The Electric Cinema in Notting Hill. The screening will be followed by a Q & A hosted by a Film Critic, an Aid Specialist, who has over 10 years of experience in humanitarian crisis zones, and a British Documentary Maker.

There will also be the opportunity to win over £5,000 worth of prizes, including an exclusive Kingdom of Heaven limited edition Ridley Scott framed and signed print, a bike, a one year Cineworld pass, dinner for two at the exclusive Electric Brasserie, celebrity worn designer clothes, and much more.

Jean Michel Grand, the Executive Director at Action Against Hunger, says: “With an estimated three million people affected by the earthquake that hit Haiti on 12th January, it is crucial public support continues. FLC the The alternative Hip Hop / Rap / Alternative Rock / Funk / Lounge / Blues / Jazz band have been away due to some legal issues involving management and their record labels. They have been keeping it relatively low key and operating out of London. Issues have now been resolved (or contracts expired) and Huey Morgan, Brian 'Fast' Leiser and Mark Francis Reid's sixth studio album Plastic Fantastic comes out on March 1, 2010. The first single from the album Classic Fantastic is out on February 22. Having listened to preview tracks of Classic Fantastic I can say that it says what it is on the tin - Classic Fantastic.

The PCC is screening the noir classic Kiss Me Deadly. Based on a Mickey Spillane pulp fiction. This classic was a source of inspiration for Quentin Tarantino. The scenes in Pulp Fiction of the glow of the contents of the never seen briefcase a direct homage to Kiss Me Deadly.

Kiss Me Deadly promises ‘red-blood kisses’ and ‘white-hot thrills’, a noir classic that has lost none of its power to shock and surprise. Private investigator Mike Hammer, a thuggish, macho anti-hero, is drawn into a bottomless pit of conspiracy and corruption after picking up a mysterious and beautiful hitch-hiker. Exposing the black soul of America in the atomic age, this is as hard-boiled as it gets.

Jason Wood, director of programming at Curzon Cinemas, film journalist and author of 100 American Independent Films and 100 Road Movies among others, will select the best review.

Jacques Audiard’s (The Beat That My Heart Skipped) new film A Prophet captivated audiences at Cannes and seized the Grand Prize with both its poetic and raw aesthetic. Ferocious and compassionate, the film follows the descent of a young man into the hierarchies of the criminal underworld. Sentenced to six years in prison, nineteen-year-old French-Arab Malik is approached by the leader of a Corsican gang, who operates their criminal activities from inside his cell. After a violent initiation, Malik is forced to adapt to the rules of the clashing criminal factions within the prison. However, over a period of time, he steadily builds up a power structure of his own.
