The Establishing Shot: Bond 23 Skyfall on Hankley Common, Surrey - We do a thorough investigation Helicopters upcoming explosions and the mysterious Monastery (Pics & Video )
By now everyone know that Skyfall has constructed a large building on MOD land on Hankley Common near Elstead in Surrey. The structure is rumoured to be a Monastery and that today helicopters were seen buzzing the area.

Well fortunately The Establishing Shot’s Surrey Field Agent Tim Page was quick on his feet and was able to do a thorough reconnaissance of the Skyfall location. Tim also got some cracking pictures and video (further below) of the on set action. Tim's photos show a Skyfall helicopter possibly commandeered by Captain Marc Wolff filming a military helicopter with some strange emblems above the Manor House/Monastery.

The Establishing Shot: The Cabin in the Woods Review or rather here are 5 spoiler free reasons to see The Cabin in the Woods
What do you get when 5 college friends - a gorgeous slutty girl, a dope smoking fool, a die hard jock that gives it all he’s got, an egghead and a virgin - spend a weekend at a remote cabin? Well if Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon are involved an hour and half of balls out fun.

I know you are visiting to read an insightful deconstruction and analysis of The Cabin in the Woods but it is still a whole month away from being released in the UK and much of the joy of The Cabin in the Woods comes from not knowing where it is going. I suspect by the time you actually get around to seeing the film most of the surprises would have been spoiled - avoid the trailers - so I recommend you try see it as soon as possible. In the meantime here are 5 spoiler free reasons to see The Cabin in the Woods.

The Establishing Shot: First step in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus Viral game reveals a hi rez look into the Space Jockey or Mala'kak’s navigation system
The Prometheus Viral game is afoot! Or at least it was. I was a bit slow on this. I noticed people were posting pics from Sir Ridley Scott’s Prometheus but in an effort to keep fresh for the films release 1 June 2012 I ignored them. During lunch today I was reading some of the comments on my YouTube channel regarding The Peter Weyland 2023 Ted Talk - Prometheus Viral. Which takes place 50 years before events in Prometheus.

Chris is a legendary smuggler and quickly assembles a crew with the help of his best friend, Sebastian (Ben Foster), to head to Panama and return with millions in counterfeit bills. Things quickly fall apart and with only hours to reach the cash, Chris must use his rusty skills to successfully navigate a treacherous criminal network of brutal drug lords, cops and hit men before his wife, Kate (Kate Beckinsale), and sons become their target.

BILL CUNNINGHAM NEW YORK
The 'Bill' in question is 80+ New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham. For decades, this Schwinn-riding cultural anthropologist has been obsessively and inventively chronicling fashion trends and high society charity soirees for the Times Style section in his columns 'On the Street' and 'Evening Hours.' Documenting uptown fixtures (Anna Wintour, Tom Wolfe, Brooke Astor, David Rockefeller - who all appear in the film out of their love for Bill), downtown eccentrics and everyone in between, Cunningham's enormous body of work is more reliable than any catwalk as an expression of time, place and individual flair. In turn, Bill Cunningham New York is a delicate, funny and often poignant portrait of a dedicated artist whose only wealth is his own humanity and unassuming grace.

IN DARKNESS
In Darkness' tells the story of of Socha (Robert Wieckiewicz), a Lvov sewer worker who, although anti-Semitic, hides a handful of Jews in the sewers in exchange for a monthly stipend. In a world on the brink of collapse, John Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

THE RAVEN
When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper - part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story. Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe's writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author's help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer's next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it's too late.

BEL AMI
An incredible cast of actors unite for a stylish and scandalous tale of high society 19th Century France. Based on the classic novel by Guy de Maupassant, Bel Ami chronicles the rise of penniless ex-soldier Georges Duroy through the echelons of the 1890s Parisian elite, an erotically charged tale of ambition, power and seduction.

CLEANSKIN
Ewan is a secret service agent faced with the task of pursuing and eliminating a suicide bomber and his terrorist cell.

TRISHNA
Based on Thomas Hardy's classic novel Tess of the D'Ubervilles, TRISHNA is a beautifully shot, classic tale of love and tragedy set across modern day rural Rajasthan and the thriving metropolis of Mumbai. Trishna (Freida Pinto) meets a wealthy young British businessman, Jay Singh (Riz Ahmed), who has come to India to work in his father's hotel business. After an accident destroys her father's Jeep, Trishna goes to work for Jay, and they fall in love. But despite their feelings for each other, their relationship must remain a secret due to the con-flicting pressures of a rural society which is changing rapidly through industrialisation, urbanisation and, above all, education. Their problems seem to be solved when Jay takes Trishna to an exciting new world of dance, vibrant life and possibilities - Mumbai. But Trishna harbours a dark secret that threatens the very heart of their love affair, and inequalities remain at the centre of their relationship that will lead her to question Jay's intentions towards her.

PAYBACK SEASON
Hot shot Premiership footballer Jerome seems to have it all - a luxury flat, a fast car, any girl he wants, and a booming career. A vast contrast to the council estate life he left behind. Following a run-in with his old estate crew, his world is turned upside down as he gets caught up in the gangland ways his friends still pursue, and before long finds himself being blackmailed by the dealers, crooks and dropouts he used to hang around with. The Establishing Shot: Independent Spotlight - Four Hours
Four Hours, directed by 19 years old "Norwegian Tarantino" Andre Rettedal, has just been released on DVD and VOD. The film is a British action comedy filmed in London.  It tells the story of gangsters Capone and Tung, whose plan to rob a bar turns out to be much more complicated than expected. When they realise that they will have to wait four hours to get the code to the safe, they hold barmaid Charleene and loser Bob hostage. And, as Capone puts it "We are going to have a lot of fun in these four hours!"

Video: Four Hours - Official HD Movie Trailer (2012)

Born on the Norwegian coast, Andre Rettedal always wanted to become a film director. He started writing the script for Four Hours at the age of 15. As soon as he turned 18, he left Norway to London with his grandfather's suitcase, £3000 in his pocket and a fair amount of trust in his lucky star. He eventually managed to put a team together and completed Four Hours in 6 days. The film was then acquired at the last Cannes Film Festival by Denton Distribution for international distribution.

Four Hours has just been released globally on DVD and VOD. The film is available for sale from the Denton Distribution website or through streaming on Denton Distribution's Facebook page. A competition is on to win a DVD of Four Hours by becoming a fan of Denton Distribution's Facebook page.

The Establishing Shot: AWESOME! Of the week - New Battleship Trailer
Initial footage from Battleship seemed to lean towards Transformers 2 or at least feel like the disappointment that was Transformers 2 but this latest trailer is off the hook and I'm now really looking forward to it.

Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Based on Hasbro's classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper's fiancée; Alexander Skarsgård as Hopper's older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper's crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone's superior (and Sam's father), Admiral Shane. Berg directs this epic action-adventure also produced by Scott Stuber (Couples Retreat), Sarah Aubrey (The Kingdom), Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir of Hasbro (the Transformers franchise), along with Duncan Henderson (Master and Commander). Summer 2012 begins with the biggest battle of all: Battleship

The Hunger Games: The IMAX Experience is the first installment of the trilogy based on Suzanne Collins’ bestselling novels and stars Academy-Award® nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

About The Hunger Games
Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games.  A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen volunteers in her younger sister’s place to enter the games, and is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy when she’s pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives.  If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

THE HUNGER GAMES is directed by Gary Ross, with a screenplay by Gary Ross and Suzanne Collins and Billy Ray, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik.  Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel, the first in a trilogy published by Scholastic that has over 26 million copies in print in the United States alone, has developed a massive global following. It has spent more than 180 consecutive weeks/more than three consecutive years to date on The New York Times bestseller list since its publication in September 2008, and has also appeared consistently on USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists.

The greatest Short film competition ever - Sci-Fi-London 48 Hour Film Challenge
The 2012 challenge weekend is 14 - 16 April.
Over the last four years the SCI-FI-LONDON Film Festival has run a 48hour Film Challenge and we have had over 380 films completed, many of which have gone to other film festivals and been broadcast on TV.

The challenge takes place a few weeks before the film festival so we can judge all the entries and the winning films can be screened at the festival.

Get a crew together, scout some locations, prep your cast and be ready to make a 5 minute short film in just 48 hours. We ask one member of your team to come to the Apollo Picadilly on Saturday 14 April at 10.30am where we give you the TITLE of the film you will make, some DIALOGUE that one of your characters must say to screen, and a list of PROPS that must be seen in the film. This year we also introduce an optional scientific theme... this could be nano-tech, cloning, gene-splicing...or something a little more "fringe".

Once you have all your elements, you have until Monday morning to return the completed movie to us.

In 2008, Gareth Edwards took part and won the competition. Gareth’s debut feature is the multiple award-winning MONSTERS – and the project was green-lit because Vertigo Films saw his winning 48hour short-film right here! So impressed were they with what he could do with no budget in just 2 days that they decided to develop a feature with him.

In 2011 we had a prize from Vertigo Films of a feature-film development deal, we hope that the winners will complete their first feature next year. Also, one of the runners-up was scouted by The Mill and is now working on some amazing projects. We are working on prizes and jury right now, but the dates are locked, so start planning.

For 2012 we can confirm Vertigo Films are offering another development deal to the winners!

The Smalls & Boat Magazine Documentary Short Film Competition
Submit you film on or before April 30, 2012.
The Smalls' re-launch is almost here! But while they are hard at work on rebuilding and retooling The Smalls website, they wanted to make sure to bring you something that would keep you busy too. So how about this: A documentary short film competition that celebrates London and that awards two lucky winners with incredible prizes including amazing career opportunities in the film industry as well as the commissioning of a second short film!

What does THIS LONDON mean to you? We want to see the city through your eyes, and through your lens. Whether that is from beneath a construction crane, jumping off the deck of a funky houseboat or skating down the edge of a clogged sidewalk, we want you to take us to meet the undiscovered treasures and characters of London. Show us the community garden that flourishes in an abandoned rail yard, take us dancing in an eclectic music club or sneak us in through the back door of an orthodox church turned fashion school. Give us face time with artists, middle-class mothers, or high-hitting decision makers. Guide us through the last remaining industrial wastelands, into the kitchen of a prominent private club or behind the neon lights of Chinatown. Do all of this or nothing. It doesn't matter as long as you dazzle us with your short film portrait of London.

CATE BLANCHETT IN BIG AND SMALL (GROSS UND KLEIN) AT THE BARBICAN
13-29 April only - Barbican Theatre
Cate Blanchett features in this delicately surreal play. Whisking us down a rabbit hole and into a wonderland-like world, Big and Small transports us to a hotel dining room where Lotte sits alone.

Courageously optimistic and perpetually disappointed, Lotte is in constant search for human connection. She is rejected by her husband, unrecognised by old friends and unfamiliar with her family. Like Carroll’s Alice, sometimes Lotte is too big for her surroundings and sometimes too small to be noticed within them.

Cate Blanchett was named Best Actress in a leading role in a major production at the 2011 Sydney Theatre Awards for this part.

A Sydney Theatre Company production, co-commissioned by the Barbican, London and London 2012 Festival using funds from the National Lottery through Arts Council England, Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen, Théâtre de la Ville Paris and Wiener Festwochen.

FIONA BANNER PRESENTS ORSON WELLES' HEART OF DARKNESS, THE FIRST EVER PERFORMANCE, WITH ACTOR BRIAN COX
Actor Brian Cox announced for first ever performance of Welles’ screenplay, ‘the greatest film never made’

On Saturday 31 March from 5.30pm, artist Fiona Banner will present Orson Welles’ unmade screenplay based on Joseph Conrad’s book Heart of Darkness for the first time. Emmy Award winning Brian Cox, celebrated for his roles in films such as Manhunter, Braveheart and more recently Coriolanus, will play all parts in this special reading, streamed live through www.aroomforlondon.co.uk and onto a screen in Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room for anyone to come and watch for free.

Welles wrote his script of Heart of Darkness in the late 1930s, finishing it in 1939. It was to be his first film and he’d intended to play the roles of both narrator Marlow and protagonist Kurtz. However it was finally rejected by Studio RKO for being too political, too expensive and too uncompromising artistically, let alone the parallels that could potentially be drawn to the rise of fascism in Europe at the time and between the character of Kurtz and Hitler. Welles went on to make Citizen Kane instead.

Fiona Banner says: ‘Like the original novel, Welles’ script is a parody of power gone bad. It’s also a narrative of seduction, both a lens and a mirror. In the 1890s, Conrad’s theme was colonialism, in the 1930s Welles’ theme was the rise of fascism. Today, the focus is greed, globalisation and high finance.’

Cox will perform the entire text live to camera on board A Room for London, a one-bedroom installation in the shape of a riverboat perched on top of Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, overlooking the River Thames. The boat, called Roi des Belges, designed by David Kohn Architects in collaboration with Fiona Banner, was inspired by the original riverboat of the same name captained by Joseph Conrad whilst in the Congo in 1890, a journey echoed in Heart of Darkness. Throughout the performance, the actor will address himself, channelling the mythological character of Welles, and the excessive and self destructive superhero Kurtz and his alter ego Marlow.

Fiona Banner’s presentation of Orson Welles’ Heart of Darkness is part of Artangel’s A Room for London programme where the boat becomes an extraordinary temporary studio for writers, musicians and artists throughout 2012. The programme also includes A London Address, a series of monthly writings and recordings, Sounds from a Room, a series of live music webcasts, and Ideas for London, a competition in association with the London Evening Standard to uncover Londoners’ most remarkable ideas to make their city a better place.

This durational special performance of Heart of Darkness will begin in the late afternoon and continue through twilight into the evening. Southbank Centre audiences can come and go as they please. It will also be available on demand on www.aroomforlondon.co.uk until 30 June.

DFG IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SHEFFIELD DOC/FEST
Saturday 17th March 2012 | 10am – 1pm Or 2pm – 5pm
Following on from its success as an extension of DFG Day at Sheffield Doc/Fest, the Mini-Meetmarket is coming to London this spring. The Mini-Meetmarket is a unique opportunity for new and emerging documentary filmmakers to meet Executive Producers to pitch their idea in an intimate roundtable environment.

The aim is simple: to enable you to get feedback on your documentary idea from industry execs, no matter how undeveloped it is at this stage. You’ll get a response on how you pitched it as well as pointers on how it needs developing, where to go next, and how to improve your chances of getting funding.

"Mini-Meetmarket is one of those essential forums to help kick-start new documentary ideas into the real world of filmmaking." André Singer, Spring Films

There are often barriers between a great idea and getting it heard by the right person. Direct access to Commissioning Editors isn’t always easy and in fact is often not the best route to take. Partnering with an Exec who has a strong relationship with a broadcaster may often give your project a much better chance of a commission.

Those filmmakers who are selected to go through to the Mini-Meetmarket will be asked to attend either the morning or afternoon session. This will start with a one-hour introductory workshop to pitching, followed by a two-hour round table session.

Mini-Meetmarket began at Sheffield Doc/Fest in 2006 as part of DFG Day: a day (and a bit) of informative sessions and pitching opportunities to help new and emerging talent move ahead in the documentary industry. These opportunities are run as a partnership between DFG and Doc/Fest as part of their ongoing commitment to supporting talent. The initiative has moved from strength to strength, and is now coming to London for the first time.

HOW IT WORKS…
Mini-Meetmarket London will take place on Saturday 17th March in two sessions:
Morning session: 10am – 1pm
Afternoon session: 2pm – 5pm

DAVID ATTENBOROUGH'S KINGDOM OF PLANTS 3D WILL BURST ONTO SKY 3D SCREENS IN MAY 2012
Sky 3D and Atlantic Productions today announce that the ground-breaking KINGDOM OF PLANTS 3D, a three part mini-series written and presented by David Attenborough, will begin airing in May 2012.

Filmed over the course of a year at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, which houses some 90% of all known plant species in one form or another, KINGDOM OF PLANTS 3D is multi-award winning natural history broadcaster David Attenborough’s fourth collaboration with Sky 3D and Atlantic Productions. The immersive and compelling series reveals a fascinating new look at plant life through the use of stunning 3D time-lapse filming techniques.

Each of the three 50 minute episodes will cover a different area of plant life. Life in the Wet Zone looks at the adaptation of plants to wet and humid environments, with episode two, Solving the Secrets, exploring the behind-the-scenes lives of plant movement, scent and communication. Survival, the concluding episode, focuses on the continual adaptation of plants as well as a look at Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank, which houses almost two billion seeds of more than 30,000 species of wild plants to ensure their future for generations to come.

David Attenborough commented: “One of the most wonderful things about filming plants is that you can reveal hidden aspects of their lives. You can capture the moment as one plant strangles another, and as they burst into flower. But whilst time-lapse photography allows you to see things that no human being has ever seen before, the added element of 3D takes the audience even further still. Stamens extend and burst to reveal their pollen grains in exquisite detail, and we can see close-up the incredible insects that partner up with these plants. The whole experience in 3D is just entrancing, and hypnotically beautiful.”

Since launching Sky 3D in October 2010 Sky has broken new ground across a range of genres, including natural history, live music, the arts, spots and movies. Highlights have included David Attenborough’s THE BACHELOR KING 3D, a number of summer music festivals, opera and ballet, Kylie Minogue live from the O2, Got to Dance, the 3D TV world premieres of Avatar, Alice in Wonderland and the Toy Story Trilogy as well as more than 150 live sports broadcast spanning a range of domestic and international sports.
KINGDOM OF PLANTS 3D airs in May 2012 on Sky 3D and will be simulcast in 2D on Sky Atlantic HD.

BBC FILMS' BRIGHT STAR TO BE SHOWN ON BBC 2 & BBC HD ON SATURDAY 24 MARCH
BBC 2 & BBC HD are to premiere Jane Campion’s portrait of love and loss, BRIGHT STAR, on Saturday 24 March at 20:45.

Romantic poet, John Keats’s love for Fanny Brawne inspired some of the most beautiful love letters ever written. BRIGHT STAR portrays the secret love affair between the 23 year old English poet and the girl next door, an outspoken student of fashion.

Set in London 1818 this unlikely pair starts at odds; he thinking her a stylish minx, she unimpressed by literature in general.

It is the illness of Keats’s younger brother that finally draws them together as Keats is touched by Fanny’s efforts to help and agrees to teach her poetry.

By the time Fanny’s alarmed mother and Keats’s best friend Brown realise their attachment, the relationship has an unstoppable momentum. Intensely and helplessly absorbed in each other, the young lovers are swept into powerful new sensations and together ride a wave of romantic obsession that deepens as their troubles mount.

When Keats falls ill a year later, the two young lovers face not marriage, but separation. In Keats' own poignant words, "forever panting and forever young".

BRIGHT STAR is directed by Oscar Winning Jane Campion (The Piano) and stars Abbie Cornish (Limitless) as Fanny Brawne alongside Ben Whishaw (Perfume) as John Keats.

HITCHCOCK AND HOLLYWOOD WITH TIPPI HEDREN - BRINGING THE GREAT DAYS OF HOLLYWOOD TO LIFE
17 March 2012 at 7.30pm
Tippi Hedren, the last of Alfred Hitchcock’s glamorous blondes, will be on-stage at the Fairfield to tell you of her time working with Hollywood’s master of suspense. A critic wrote, ‘Hitchcock had given us one Grace Kelly in a generation and seems intent on giving us another in the person of Tippi Hedren, a classically beautiful, regally poised blonde.’

With clips from some of Hitchcock’s most famous films on the Fairfield’s Big-Screen, Miss Hedren will discuss the background to famous Hitchcock films, such as Vertigo, Psycho, Marnie, The Man Who Knew Too Much and North By North West.

Alfred Hitchcock left his hometown, East London, to be at the heart of the Film World in Hollywood. With his quirky approach to film-making, he had a deep understanding of music’s role in heightening tension. Even so, The Birds has no music, while Psycho uses nothing but string instruments. Bernard Herrmann, Hitchcock’s favourite composer, won an Oscar for The Devil & Daniel Webster.

With the critically acclaimed New Queen’s Hall Orchestra on stage to play some of Hollywood’s greatest scores, this will be an exceptional evening for anyone interested in the cinema and fine music-making. John Farrer, a great American conductor and a devoted fan of the NQHO, will guarantee the full Hollywood treatment.

Tippi Hedren is not just a Hollywood Star. She is also famous for her love affair with wild animals, meeting her first lion while filming in Africa. Ever since, she has devoted herself to looking after some 60 Big-Cats, including lions, tigers, leopards and cougars at her reserve in California. Many of these superb animals are cast-offs from zoos and circuses. With her daughter, Melanie Griffith, Miss Hedren produced and appeared in a film entitled ‘Roar’, which helped establish her big-cat reserve. Perhaps she will tell us a little about this wonderful work. What an extraordinary evening we shall have!

The BFI Fellowship, bestowed for outstanding achievement in film and television, will be presented to Richard Lester as part of an on-stage interview. This is the BFI's highest accolade and previous recipients include Martin Scorsese, Isabelle Huppert, Judi Dench and Ridley Scott. Other career highlights include The Three Musketeers (1973) and a cult classic with Spike Milligan, The Bed-Sitting Room (1969). Robin and Marian is a film which has a key place in Richard Lester's career. It boasts a cohort of great actors led by Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn in the title roles. With a minimum of swashbuckling, the story tells the story of Robin Hood's return from the Crusades to seek out his old love. A delightful and deftly crafted, bittersweet, comic romance for adults.

DAMSELS IN DISTRESS SCREENING AND WHIT STILLMAN IN CONVERSATION
11 Apr 18:10 NFT1
Whit Stillman's witty, bitter-sweet look at the lives of a quartet of girls who are determined to make their mark at a male-dominated college.

Stillman's long-awaited film (his first since The Last Days of Disco) takes a typically witty, bitter-sweet look at the lives of a quartet of girls who are determined to ring the changes at a depressingly grungy, hitherto boorish and male-dominated East Coast college. As they put their plans into action, they also, inevitably, become involved with various members of the establishment's masculine population, and find both their loyalty to one another and their very sanity coming under threat… A wry comedy of modern tribal manners, characteristically notable for its superb dialogue and fine performances.
