To celebrate the release of MONSTERS on DVD & Blu-Ray on April 11. Jameson Cult Film Club are hosting a very special screening of MONSTERS.

It makes perfect sense, now that I see it in front of me. Gareth Edwards a super talented film-maker, his film Monsters a creature feature that's more about humans than creatures - that has captured the imagination of audiences worldwide and The Jameson Cult Film Club. Of course it's a perfect fit.

After JCFC championed Moon (a film set on the Moon, with robots but is actually about humanity) and screened it at the off world like Royal Institution. It makes perfect sense that the JCFC are again championing a relatively small independent future cult classic - Monsters.

If you are a regular reader you know I am a fan of the super talented Gareth Edwards and his ingenious Monsters you also know that Monsters is a A+, 5 star recommendation that perfectly captures the spirit of Cult Film.

Monsters is a great choice of films again bringing to the fore how Jameson are committed to championing good cinema. I can also say with certainty - those lucky enough to get tickets to the screening are in for a treat - the location of the Monsters screening is an absolutely inspired choice. You need to see this place to believe it! In fact if you don't get tickets to Monsters I highly recommend that you try got on one of the guided tours of the Hunterian Museum at The Royal College of Surgeons of England at your convenience.

It is probably worth noting that if you haven't been to a JCFC screening - it is not just a film screening it is an immersive experience that brings you closer to the film - those faint of heart may wish to bring their comfort blankets or a suitable +1.

I cannot express how much I love Jean-Jacques Beineix's Diva. It fits firmly in that category of films for that transcends it's time, genre and vision.

It's one of those films that feels small yet encompasses so many parts to make a complete whole. Often accused of being more style than substance Diva defined that very term for many- and became a meme that has influenced film-makers since. Looks like Future Cinema are giving us the opportunity to experience Diva in a wonderful, unique and immersive way.

Two tapes, two Parisian mob killers, one corrupt policeman, an opera fan, a teenage thief, and the coolest philosopher ever filmed. All these characters twist their way through an intricate and stylish French language thriller.

It epitomised everything I love about cinema, Europe & design. It's full of intrigue, passion interesting characters (menacing villains, hapless heroes, ultra cool philosophers), brilliant lighting and music . It was such an influence on me that I decorated my loft in the late 90s in a very similar fashion to one of the character's homes. In fact the only reason I liked the space was because it reminded me of Gorodish's pad in Diva.

Director Jean-Jacques Beineix launched the Cinema Du Look movement with this stylish cult thriller that remains as innovative today as when it premiered in 1981. Jules (Frederic Andrei), a young postal carrier, illegally tapes a concert of a reclusive opera singer (American soprano Wilhelmena Wiggins Fernandez). Jules' attempts to woo the diva are interrupted when Taiwanese bootleggers come after the recording. His problems become worse when a prostitute slips another tape, one that incriminates a police chief, into his bag. Jules must escape the police chief, the cop's henchmen and the bootleggers to keep both precious tapes safe - and to stay alive. Featuring critically acclaimed cinematography and a celebrated chase through the Paris Metro, DIVA earned Cesar Awards for Best Music, Best Cinematography and Best Directorial Debut.

On Monday 28th February at 18.30, Future Cinema the creators of Secret Cinema, bring Paris to St Martin's Lane with live adaptation and subsequent screening of Jean Jacques Beineix classic thriller Diva at the London Coliseum in partnership with ENO.

Following her spectacular debut as Mimi La Bohème for ENO, where the Daily Telegraph crowned her “best newcomer” 2010, Elizabeth Llewellyn stars as Cynthia Hawkins.

the hole haunted happenings london tombs

The one, where I accidently raise the dead at a creepy séance. OK! So last week to commemorate the launch of master auteur Joe Dante’s The Hole on DVD and Blu-ray I was invited along to a Haunted Happening at The London Tombs of The London Bridge Experience.

OK! So possibly if you got a similar invite you would have clicked the links in the invite and done a bit of research in to what the dark night might hold. I on the other hand enjoy discovering experiences without expectation. And too be honest I was expecting some kind of chat over cheese & wine followed by a “Mystery Tour” through The London Tombs. Boy! Was I wrong. Well not entirely wrong, a tour was involved.

6:51pm - A combination of arriving at The London Tombs later than expected and the event kicking off a little earlier than planned left me sitting in the waiting area on my own with a pretty decent cup of coffee and an exhibition of London Bridge and it’s dark secrets - whilst the rest of the expedition party got an after hours tour of the Tombs.

Secret Cinema returns for screenings from 11 February to 27 February. Tickets will be available Weds 13 February from here.

The Establishing Shot visits the Tron Legacy Flynn's Arcade - Event Report

Ok! By now you know I have a culture crush on TRON: Legacy and judging by the number of Twitter followers I have lost directly related to TRON tweets I’ll be winding down my hyping up of one of the best, big releases we have had this year. But not before posting about my visit to Flynn’s Arcade.

The original TRON had its faults but my love of it grew over the years and it inspired me to either follow a career in arcade ownership or computer graphics - I settled on the latter for awhile.

Back in July of 2009 Disney unveiled a Flynn’s Arcade at Comic Con San Diego. I was green with envy when I saw pictures and video of fans getting a chance to visit Flynn’s Arcade as well as get a first look at a real Light Cycle.

So about 6 months ago when Disney asked what UK fans would like to see next from TRON: Legacy naturally my list consisted of:

- A Flynn’s Arcade (in London)
- A Light Cycle (in London)
- Some Flynn’s Arcade tokens

Not for one second did I think that an Arcade or Light Cycle would make their way to our shores. And a Flynn’s Arcade token was more achievable.

So you can imagine my surprise and delight when I found out via the London Film Museum’s Twitter feed that Hewlett Packard where hosting a TRON: Legacy Experience on Southbank. The HP ePrint TRON: Legacy Experience was to include:

A spectacular light show each day. The iconic Queen Elizabeth Hall will become the backdrop for an ambitious and visually arresting architectural mapping display which will see the exterior walls of the building become animated and appear to be alive

I need your help. Hopefully you have taken the time to have a gander at my spoiler free TRON: Legacy review. If you have you will note that I am of the opinion it is an almost pitch perfect film. The closest we have to a “big” release that actually delivers on the promise. Did I mention it is a monumental undertaking that may not be referred to as a game changer (as Avatar already changed the game) but it’s the film that has come as close to possible as realising the potential of immersive cinema so far.

However there are some that do not share that opinion. And rather than expound upon my theories as to why that may be. I offer a challenge to decide whether TRON: Legacy sucks or rather - is not as good as the original TRON. I’m not talking some pub bingo quiz here I’m talking a real man’s (or women’s) challenge! I’m talking shirts off, Kirk vs. that alien type challenge.

Secret Cinema the daddy of immersive cinema is back. And this November is seems as though they have pulled out all the stops.

I have been following their movements as closely as I can in the run up to their November screenings and I have to say that their November campaign is one of the most intricate and well thought out experiences yet. Top viral marketeers (I'm talking to you Dark Knight, Tron, etc.) could learn a thing or two from this month's campaign.

I've been sworn to secrecy, well it is Secret Cinema after all - but I can now let you know the following..

Batman: Arkham Knight Cape & Cowl Exhibition London

I love the London Film Museum, not only are they the home for props, memorabilia and costumes from some of my favourite films ever (Bond, Excalibur, Aliens, Batman, Superman, Star Wars and currently a Ray Harryhausen Exhibition -

as well as many, many, many more) but some of my best recent film related memories are attributed directly to them (Star Wars Exhibition, celebrating Mr. Ray Harryhausen’s 90th Birthday, Meeting Bond alumni; George Lazenby, Maude Adams & Britt Ekland as well as meeting both Herbert Lom & Burt Kwouk (responsible for some of the funniest moments on the silver screen from my childhood) and, and shooting the breeze with Terry (still not a Sir yet) Gilliam, Sir Peter Jackson and John Landis).

And that’s just the stuff off the top of my head.

“E! Are reporting from Comic-Con and Brad Pitt’s there now. Who reported from your (London Film and) Comic Con?” My girlfriend asked me a couple of days ago while watching E! She was of course referring to San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) vs. The London Film and Comic Con (LDFCC). My mumbled response somewhat deflating the grand and exotic picture I had excitedly painted of my experience at LFCC the weekend before. “Err!! A couple of bloggers by the look of things”. Naturally this spurrned me on to create this post.

“LFCC takes place every summer (over a weekend) at Earls Court 2 in London. Celebrating the best of film, television, comics and sport, London Film and Comic Con is a day out unlike any other, giving you the chance to meet your idols, ask them questions as well as grabbing the latest film/tv/comic merchandise on the market.”

So on Sunday in between Lovebox days I made my way to the Earls Court conference centre. LFCC London Film and Comic Con was back and better than ever. This year the convention covered a smaller area than the huge space in previous years. But nevertheless was capital. Some astounding guests, loads of comics, film memorabilia, talks, art, sci-fi, super heroes, Cosplay, sneak previews and an exhibition from DC comics.

I missed last year’s convention but this year the draw proved too much.

As with previous years the arena was divided up into different zones; The Signing Zone, Anime Zone, Photo shoot Zone, Artists Alley, Video Game Zone, Talk Area, Cosplay Zone, Dealer Zone.

I arrived at the Earls Court conference centre hoping to breeze in as in previous years but arrived a little earlier than anticipated and had to join the long queue to get in. As with previous years crowd control was conducted by the Empire’s finest ensuring that Trekkie scum were dutifully harassed and that all was kept in order. All the while various characters from across comics, film, Sci-Fi and Manga either queuing up or interacting with the visitors.

Film4 Summer Screen returns to the glorious Somerset House for 2010. A highlight of the summer calendar, the series features everything from special previews to cult classics, all showing on a state-of-the-art screen with full surround-sound.

There’s more than just the movies. Arrive early; come and picnic in the magnificent Edmond J. Safra courtyard while DJs play or attend one of the companion events in Behind the Screen.

After the show there is another chance to see the Sci-Fi London festival closing night movie, Cargo. Join the crew of the Kassandra on an 8-year journey to Station 42 in the darkly atmospheric Swiss cult sci-fi movie.

With four months still left on her shift, Laura patrols the ship but starts to get the feeling that she is not alone. Her exploration of the dark, ice-cold cargo hold ends in catastrophe. The rest of the crew is awakened, and a cat and mouse game begins in which nothing is what it seems. What lies hidden in the strange freight containers and who, or what, is also on-board?

This continues the long tradition of scary monsters in the confined quarters of a spacecraft that started before Alien and has continued up to the recent Pandorum, with this Swiss movie adding the darker sensibilities of European indie cinema that Hollywood invariably glosses over.

Earlier today fans of the UK spoof TV "Spaced" converged on Trafalgar Square, London for a flash Mob. Fans re-enacted a slo- mo finger gun battle from episode 5, season 2. The full episode is viewable here

Hundreds of fans were rallied to action by spreading the following message: "A re-enactment of the famous scene in Spaced. The flash mob will happen on March the 20th) on a weekend and in Zone 1, London. The exact location will be confirmed a week before the event."

If you're out of the loop Spaced is the satirical UK sitcom that spawned Simon Pegg and Nick Frost amongst others. However it is a sitcom like no other. The premise is simple enough: Daisy (Jessica Stevenson) and Tim (Simon Pegg) are out of luck and love, so pretend to be a couple in order to rent a flat together. Downstairs neighbour and eccentric painter Brian suspects someone's fibbing, and almost blows their cover with their lecherous lush of a landlady, Marsha. Fortunately he soon falls for Daisy's health-freak friend Twist, while Daisy herself goes ga-ga for pet dog Colin. Tim remains happily platonic with lifemate Mike; a sweet-at-heart guns 'n' ammo obsessive. The series is chock-full of pop culture references.

In fact, each episode is themed after at least one movie, with nods to The Shining and Close Encounters of the Third Kind proving especially hilarious. Hardly five minutes goes by without a Star Wars reference, and every second of screen time from Bill Bailey as owner of the comic shop where Tim works is comedic gold. The look of the series is its other outstanding element, with slam-zooms, dizzying montages, and inspired lighting effects (often paying homage to the Evil Dead movies). It's an affectionate fantasy on the life of the twenty-something that's uncomfortably close to the truth.

Spaced Flash Mob - Trafalgar Square, London

Last week I was lucky enough to receive an invite to the much talked about Absolut screening of Spike Jonze's new short film "I'm Here". I'm here premiered at this year's Sundance Festival and will be available online on March 7, 2010.

In case you aren't a regular reader (shame on you, if it's easier sign up for my effort free email updates on the side bar) I'm Here is a 30 minute film directed and written by the ground breaking and Oscar nominated Spike Jonze, whose talent is responsible for amongst others; Being John Malkovich, Where the Wild Things Are, Adaptation, Synecdoche, New York and some of the most cutting edge music videos of all time. I'm Here was produced in collaboration with Absolut and is at the heart of their ‘In An ABSOLUT World, Ordinary Is No Place To Be’ campaign. A nod to creativity that takes the road less travelled. In this spirit the screening was to be held in the centre of London at the NCP (National Car Parks) car park in Soho.

I had already heard grumbling on the social media network vine that the venue was putting some people off? Oh! The irony.

Sometime around July 21 last year US film Bloggers started receiving mysterious packages that included 2 coins. Arcade coins to be exact, with the words "FLYNN’s ARCADE" printed on the one side and "Home of Tron" on the other.

OK! So Flynn's Arcade was the the games arcade that Kevin Flynn owned (played and created games in) in the 1982 film Tron. Turns out that this was the first step in an immersive viral campaign that involved cryptic code puzzles leading to www.flynnlives.com. The site outlined a short bio of Kevin Flynn and a history of the Flynn movement. This can be found here www.flynnlives.com/default.htm The site also had a countdown and further cryptic clues that led to a real world search and ended with the convergence of fans and bloggers at Flynn's Arcade in San Diego.

Once they were inside they were treated to:

- Classic arcade games
- Tron Legacy concept art
- A preview of a Daft Punk song from the Tron Legacy Soundtrack
- A Tron Lightcycle
- T-Shirts and posters to the countdown website

As well as appearances by Garrett Hedlund the actor who plays the son of Flynn and Milo Ventimiglia (Peter Petrelli from Heroes). Pretty damn spectacular!!

The flip side of the coin (Home of Tron) led to http://www.homeoftron.com/ which has some background to Flynn's arcade, Space Paranoid his most popular game and his disappearance.

OK! So this week US Bloggers again started receiving packages with clues tying into the newly revised http://flynnlives.com/ZeroHour website. The top of the website is a cryptic countdown, which has been calculated to end at 8am(PST) Wednesday 24, 2010 which is 4pm over here in London and one day before Disney's Alice in Wonderland World Premiere.

The bottom part of the page started out as a unintelligible code and has slowly evolved into the names of 25 Cities. London being the last on the list and the reason you are reading this.

The list is as follows:
Sydney, Denver, Madrid, Paris, Boston, Washington DC, Orlando, Atlanta, Raleigh, San Diego, New York, Philadelphia, Toronto, Austin, Minneapolis, Nashville, Chicago, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Las Vegas, Phoenix, London.

So something is going to happen in each of these cities at 4pm on Wednesday 24 February. Speculation is that this may be the time and location of:

- A Daft Punk gig
- The opening of a number of Flynn's Arcades
- The release of the first official Tron Legacy Trailer (clips seen so far have been VFX test Footage) in 2D prior to a 3D version at the Alice in Wonderland Premiere the following day.
- Disney Shops will demo Tron arcade games
- The start to a scavenger hunt to a location of a Tron event similar to The Dark Knight viral last year.

It would be great to hear your comments or touch base with a view to possibly banding together if there is a scavenger hunt.

Sweeeeet! Looks like there is going to be a Tron based scavenger hunt. I'm hoping that it ends at at a Flynn’s Arcade with a Light cycle. But who knows? Please get in touch/sign up if you would like to band together on this. At a minimum I think we'll be the first to see the first Tron Legacy Trailer. By my (unconfirmed) calculations we should be getting the next clue at 4:00pm today at http://www.flynnlives.com/zerohour/.

OK! So the game was afoot at 4:00pm on the 24th as I calculated. 3 of the 25 cities went active. At 5:01pm it became apparent that 3 cities would be made active per hour. Unsure of when London would be active I based my self near Waterloo - within easy reach of both the IMAX and The Namco games arcade. The London leg of the game started at at 6:00pm. Via the zerohour website we were instructed to head to:

Red 5 in Selfridges, Oxford Street London. Damn! That was a long way for me to trek in a short time. I knew that at least 1 other player @agentlex (an experienced ARG agent) was located half way there at Piccadilly Circus. However he was on foot whilst I was on my trusty steel steed cycle. I bombed it towards Oxford Street careful to abide to all street signs and rules. I stopped halfway through Soho and made a costly mistake.

I tracked down the telephone number for Red 5 via the Selfridges national number found on their website using my iPhone. I asked the Red 5 staff to access the current situation in-store. They said they would have a look around and I should call back. 6:22pm - Once I was in sight of Oxford Street I called them back. Contact had already been made.

The pickup was actually made by @sowasred2012 . I had been beaten , glory and all the good stuff to follow were @sowasred2012's. Once I got back to MI9 I discovered that the winning operatives each received a mobile phone and a number to call. Once they called the number they were directed to a second location where they could find a Tron branded wallet within the wallet they found; 3 vintage Tron cards with codes on them, 2 hardcopies of the newspaper articles from Flynn lives site and two of the much sought after Flynn's Arcade tokens. Pics can be seen here !

Once the codes were entered on the Zerohour website a previously blank square revealed a mini 80s Tron card. Flipping the card revealed that each square was part of a larger Tron image. Once all the codes had been entered and the full image revealed.

More importantly the image was now hotlinked to >www.pitcell.com where it was revealed that an EXCLUSIVE LIMITED EVENT would take place at the IMAX in New York, Los Angeles London, Toronto and Sydney. What we know is that an event is taking place at the London IMAX on Saturday 27 February 1:30pm. Rumours are that it is a short preview of Tron Legacy, the first showing of the trailer maybe a Flynn's arcade re-creation. Tickets are to be available at 9:00pm London time.

The IMAX schedule has not been disrupted and an Avatar screening starts at 2:30pm so any screening would be short and all over within an hour including arriving, collecting 3D Glasses and finding a seat.

What we don't know is what the 66 global operatives are going to be doing, the significance of the arcade tokens or the other cryptic puzzles on the site like the activated flashing gif on the Flynn Lives site, the significance of the numbers on the Tron cards, or even if all the puzzle parts have been identified yet.

Update 2 - 25 February:
All the tickets for all events are now gone and some further developments have taken place.

The animated gif was blinking binary code, if you selected the corresponding numbers on the cards of the Zero Hour puzzle, the cards flipped over to reveal access to another web page - http://www.flynnlives.com/discussionforums/ an apparent forum run by friends, fans or employees of Kevin Flynn.

The Exorcist Orange Cinema: A Night of Fright

Orange are screening the horror classic The Exorcist in a secret location in central London. The screening is on October 30th, the Friday night before Halloween. But be warned, this is only for brave souls over the age of 18.

This event will be extra special: The audience will be given state of the art wireless headphones for a cinema experience like no other. Special 4D effects during the screening to really bring the film to life.

Last weekend Secret Cinema pulled off their most awesome screening yet!:

- Dress for an 80s rock evening (Rock Gods, Shady Promoters, Metal Heads and Old School Rockers)
- Meet at the Sheperds Bush Empire
- An introduction by the legend that is Mr. Ralph Brown or Danny as he is known to his friends
- A screening of a short film about a Lebanese drummer
- An actual performance by up and coming rock band Cauldron
- A UK Premiere screening of ANVIL!

"It’s not as if we metal fans aren’t used to being patronised and misunderstood by outsiders, but the strength of the Anvil movie lies in the fact that it’s a genuinely touching story about human beings, relationships and the pursuit of childhood dreams; all things that the vast majority of people can relate to without recourse to sneering superiority. In fact, the most startling thing about this screening of the film is that as it progresses, there’s a very noticeable change in atmosphere, as bemused giggling slowly evolves into bona fide sympathy and affection for Anvil and their rollercoaster ride."

The film moved me (a non hard metal fan) to purchase the latest ANVIL CD. I say "moved" as I have not bought a hard copy music in about 4 years. I knew of the ANVIL film and although impressed on hearing that ANVIL the band had been making live appearance to support the films launch had already decided that I would see it as a download or when it was on TV. I'm really glad I got to see the film big screen at Secret Cinema. I should mention that I had it the wrong way around - the film was created to promote the story of ANVIl. I only found out at that screening that the film was actually made by a dedicated ANVIL fan who had followed them since their early performances.

In many ways not only is it true to the spirit of rock but independent film making as well. So the film is over. It's time to pack up and leave. WRONG! Secret Cinema was just starting! After the credits the lights dim, a lone guitar riffs metal and a spotlight lights up a second tier balcony revealing "Lips" wailing on his axe.

- The screening was followed by a performance from ANVIL themselves and if that was not enough they pulled in Scott Ian (legendary Anthrax guitarist) to play a couple of songs. ANVIL pretty much got the audience on their feet and rocking out. It was a genuine rock gig by a genuine rock band.

Thanks Secret Cinema and thank you ANVIL for continuing to rock!

Secret Cinema returned to higher education at Dulwich College in London and Clifton College in Bristol with Lindsay Anderson's powerful and inspirational 'If....'.

'If....' was filmed against the backdrop of the 1968 Student Riots in Paris, and has been celebrated as one of the greatest British films of all time.

The film won the Palme d'Or in 1969. 39 years later, another film set in a school won the Palme d'Or - 'Entre les murs'.

Travis, Wallace and Johnny played truant at West Dulwich Station and Bristol Zoo car park while the whips were out in force leading the 'new boys' to college for assembly. Over 1000 new boys enjoyed sweets from College Journal Metro and fizzy pop from Suso, wearing college house uniforms provided by Moss Bros.

New boys were greeted by the headmaster and were checked by the school matrons before being led to assembly where all stood to sing the hymn 'The Day of Resurrection' and watch an informative short film about war by Grant Orchard.

The Secret Cinema is a monthly gathering of all that love stimulating, challenging and ground breaking cinema. The internet is changing the way we watch films. The Secret Cinema changes where you watch films.

Every month a new secret location, you will receive an email the day of the screening stating the film that is to be shown and the location.

The film will be chosen by the secret cinema folk whose names will remain secret and sometimes by you the secret audience who will send in your secret votes.

The locations will vary. Anything from derelict theatres, rooftops, parks and other secret spaces.
